UPDATES:

  • There is an internal candidate who got the visiting position that was posted in April.
  • - Oh, there is an internal candidate everywhere these days, what with the prevalence of adjunct labor. Still doesn't determine the outcome of a search.
  • I second the prior comment. Just because a VAP has been brought in to cover classes does not mean that the department will view him or her as the perfect fit for the TT line they have secured. Far from being "on the inside," VAP's are not regular voting members of the departments they serve and they live one bad teaching eval or misunderstanding with a colleague away from being fired. Once a TT search has been announced in their field then they are effectively undergoing a continuous interview in the full knowledge that, if they fail, they will need to find another job. The history of the wiki is that people are very quick to point to internal candidates in advance but not so diligent at the end of the year about ascertaining how many actually got the job (more often than not they didn't). If you're going to flag up an internal candidate for the wiki's attention, maybe consider stating why you think the fact is relevant to other jobseekers.
  • Does anyone know if this is a new tt line or a replacement for someone who left/is leaving? Thanks, and good luck to all.

  • - Io non sarei troppo sorpresa qualora il lavoro andasse a qualcuno con un PhD da U Penn

  • Candidates should be notified during the week of January 9th
  • Search cancelled
  • ^--again???
  • It would be funny if it weren't tragic, given the current state of the market and of our discipline. Is the info reliable?
  • ^-- In the email they only stated that "the Italian Assistant Professor search has been cancelled" and apologized.
  • ^ Oh well, at least this year they emailed you to let you know something. It's an improvement, I guess.
  • Yes, absolutely. Two in a row. Congrats!
  • Special kudos should go to Professor Finotti - thank you for confirming Italian Studies as the most disfunctional and corrupt discipline in the humanities!
  • Well, let's not generalize to the whole Italian Studies field. It's just this particular department, run by somebody who imported the provincial, Italian nepotistic business style to the US.

DISCUSSION[]

Is the lack of usual feistiness on this page a direct consequence of the depressing MLA job list? Good luck everybody!

  • Last year's page had plenty of feistiness in response to an equally depressing first release of the MLA list. It also had the advice to wait till October/November-time before pronouncing on the TT market for the year.
  • Here is some feistiness from a place beyond depression. As a factual matter the profession is nearly dead--at least the patient is exhibiting symptoms that suggest immanent cardiac arrest. PhD programs are producing too many people while, since 1970 we have gone from 80% of teaching being done by full-time, salaried professors to 70% of courses taught by adjuncts. The so-called "job market" is so beyond bad that it might be considered pointless. This is especially true if you live on one of the coasts or a major metropolitan area and are looking for a job so that you significant other who actually earns from a good paying job will not then be also unemployed. The political economy of higher education in the 21st century (leaving aside administrative bloat and the student debt crisis) is an absolute *disgrace*, yet we are supposed to salivate over the scraps of a maybe 60k job in some far away place? Some undergraduates I have taught less than 3 years ago now report to me that they are making over 80 or 90k in mindless jobs. Tell me any other profession where you go to school for nearly a decade to make janitor level wages and are expected to drink the cultish koolaid that we do it because the "profession is valuable" and we "love the work?" Anyone else tired of reapplying constantly for the job you already have? Anyone else tired of the "publish or perish" mentality? The meaningless production of academic commodities that might be better if done slowly over years of thinking and research, but forced into little journals that few people, if anyone cares about, just because you feel that if you don't you wont be so lucky to bag that 50k or 60k per year job in yourd mid 30s or older? Why do secretaries at dental offices make more money to support their families than PhDs in Italian studies? Just saw that University of Georgia is starting a PhD program in Italian studies... LOL... this seems the height of moral turpitude to be pipelining more PhDs into a moribund and oportunity-less industry. Tenured faculty --the 1%ers--in the field have a responsibility to do something other than business as usual: this is a crisis. Why are you admitting any more PhD students? For what??? The love of Italian literature and culture, and the teaching of it and preserving of it for generations to come, cannot subsist eating out of the garbage can and animal trough that trickles down from the few priveleged places it currently survives.
  • "Anyone else tired of reapplying constantly for the job you already have?" > Ugh, yes, what has happened to us?!
  • If I may: on what basis do you think it's unfair that we make as much as janitors? Also, what's up with this wage envy towards secretaries?  [I think the point is that doing a job that requires nearly a decade of training beyond college ought to maybe more, not less, than jobs that require lower levels of train.  There is dignity in all work--nothing wrong with being a janitor or secretary.  But, there is something messed up about the fact that all of our additional years of education and training make us eligibile for LESS pay.
  • [I do not think the problem is the dignity of work (work has no dignity whatsoever in my view), but rather workers' rights and treatment. It seem quite messed up to me to be complaining about the exploitative condition of the neo-liberal precarious university while being resentful towards other exploited workers. A janitor working full-time makes 25k a year, a secretary 12$ an hour btw.]
  • not op, but I totally agree with you on this. Resentment is justified, but we need to express it all together towards the exploitative models of neoliberal academia. organize, strike, agitate. if we don't do it nobody else will do it for us.
  • ---you don't know what you're talking about.  secretaries at my university are making 50k--some even more.  the janitors are in a union, too, and are making good money.  More to the point no one was actually being resentful towards the secretaries and the janitors--that's you and some b.s. projection. There's resentment towards the pay we can hope for and the system that makes it so that in spite of years and years of education and training, we make less than the undergrads we teach will as soon as they graduate.
  • I am surprised that with all your years of training and education you are so cluless about life outside academia: average national pay of a janitor is $26000. But yes, they are making good money while academics are the new wretched of the earth.
  • I'm actually experiencing the opposite in some regards. Sure, the job market is pitiful and I agree with most of what you said...but if we're to attribute that to issues of oversaturation, let's be real...graduate programs across the country are actually admitting less and less candidates every year. The institution where I got my PhD went from admitting 20+ new grad sudents per year in the '80s to 1 - ONE - this year. I know of several language graduate programs that are struggling to cover language classes because they don't have enough TAs to teach them. I think the days of hundreds of people applying for the same TT job are inevitably coming to an end as a result of that - whether that makes any difference, it remains to be seen.
