Salary Data[]

Inspired by other fields represented in this wiki, I thought it would be interesting to post basic information of the offers we have received in order to get a better idea of what the working conditions of our field are. If adding salary data, could you also specify what part of the US the offer comes from (Southwest, Northeast, etc.) to paint a better picture of what the norm is in a certain area?

Q: I WOULD LOVE TO KNOW WHAT PEOPLE ARE BEING OFFERED FOR MOVING STIPENDS AND IF THOSE ARE NEGOTIABLE.  WHAT ARE THE CHANCES?

No matter what your moving allowance may or may not be - keep in mind that anything you don't get reimbursed for in moving expenses will be tax-deductible in the US, so at least there is that.

My moving allowance is crap. I should have negotiated harder on it. I'm moving across the country (about $9,000-$10,000 move by most estimates) and I got a paltry $2500.

A state university in GA offered $50.000 for an entering Assistant Prof. position. --> There are no state universities in GA listed under the offers made section. Would you please add this to the list?

  • Public R1 in Virginia offered 57,500 and funding for research and conferences. This particular place is notorious for underpaying faculty, though.
  • Public R1 in the east coast offered $72,000 and substantial funds for research, conferences, etc.
  • Liberal arts college, Pennsylvania, around 67.000 and start up funds
  • A state university in TX offered $55,000 for an entering Assistant Prof, increased to $58,000
  • A liberal arts college in NH offered $61,720 for Assistant Prof. TT then increased to $62,220
  • Pennsylvania norm seems to be $63,000 for entering Assistant Professors. Not too shabby.
  • A state university in Kansas offered $46,000, then increased it to $48,000.
  • A liberal arts college in Vermont offers between $65,000 and $70,000. A. This liberal arts must be Middlebury College. In any case, they offered me 71,000 plus 20,000-30,000 in start-up funds for the first two years.Q.Is this in reference to Medieval / Colonial? yes, it is. Congrats! Offer accepted? A. Nope. The fact that they offered me that money does not mean that I was selected as their candidate. That is what the dean of faculty thought I deserved to make if I were selected. Political/Ideological agendas in the department are hard to satisfy or, let's say, they do not need to agree with your merits or the evaluation by the dean. As they told me, in the US money does not always go to every kind of research. A. Ok, thank you very much for the information.
  • A liberal arts college in Pacific Northwest offered $51,000, then increased to $53,000
  • A liberal arts college in upstate New York, 2/3, offers $70,000 with a substantial research "start-up" budget.
  • A liberal arts college in the northeastern Midwest offered $61,000 for an entering Assistant Professor (currently ABD, finishing this semester), with an additional $5,000/year for research and travel for the first 3 years. They offered $2,000 for moving expenses.
  • A liberal arts college in the non-coastal (eastern) part of the Pacific Northwest, 3/1/3, offered $48,000-50,000.
  • A liberal arts college also in the eastern Pacific Northwest offered 48,000 and increased it to 50,000. $3000 in moving expenses, $2000 in start-up funds.
  • A public university in Pennsilvania offered $ 64.000 - $ 68.000, with a very solid benefits package.
  • Private University in the east coast,  2/2, low fifties.
  • Public college in the south, 3/3, $53.000.
  • Private college in the midwest, 3/3, low fifties.
  • Eastern midwest public university, 3/3, $50,000 + $2,000 for moving and $5,000 in startup.
  • Liberal arts college in the southeast, 3/3, $50000, $1500 moving

I've been trying to edit, but I get this message "Rich text editing has been disabled because the page contains complex code". Can someone put it in normal editing? ---> this happens when people cut/paste stuff from websites/emails into the page and the html code screws up the formatting ... I've tried to eliminate some of this html junk, which hopefully will fix it ... however (as evinced by your ability to post above) even if the page is stuck in "source" mode editing, you can still make changes and additions to the page. Use "Preview" to make sure your edits look as you would wish. ---> thanks for trying, but it still the same. Here I can write because it is the first line, but when I want to add something, I don know in which line should I do it. I going to try to remove that html too.. let's see --> yeah, I don't know - I've taken all html out of this section (including urls) and it still won't let you edit in visual, no clue what the issue is ... other sections of this page do allow visual editing, so it must be some kind of glitch ...?

Inquiries[]

Put your questions about jobs/statuses here, i.e. "What did your online application say on the website when you received an interview request?"

I know that is common to negotiate after an assistant proffesor position has been offered. Does it happen the same with lecturers postions? Can you for example request moving expenses? ThanksEdit[]

I recently received two offers for lecturer positions before ultimately accepting an assistant professorship elsewhere, so I can tell you about those experiences, although this is my first time on the market and I'm not sure how well they speak to the way things are generally done. University A called me with an offer, very willing ot negotiate salary (going from $45k to $50k), course load (going from 4/4 to 3/3), and moving expenses ($2,000). University B called me with an offer of $46k that did not appear to be negotiable, nor was the 4/4 course load. They did not mention moving expenses in their initial offer, but after I inquired about it, they called back the next day and offered a budget of up to $5,000 for moving expenses PLUS an additional trip out there to look for housing (and University B's location was much more desirable than University A's). So my advice would be that it never hurts to ask about what's negotiable in an offer for a lecturer position. Good luck!!!

Thanks for the info! And congrats for your new job!

Have you noticed that less colleagues are participating in this wiki tool this year? The most recent details on campus visits and job offers are not here or are taking longer to get to this page.[]

R: I have noticed that the editor function has been wonky lately, which has contributed to my slow replies/postings on the page. Other folks try to protect their identities and not reveal their job search information right away. To each his or her own.

How long does it typically take to get a contract after an offer has been made and accepted? Is it usually sent by regular mail, Fed-Ex, or e-mailed as a PDF? I'm sure each institution has its own protocol and timeline, but what has been your experience with contracts?[]

A: It really does vary by institution. Most of them should email you a PDF and follow it up with a snail mail version. If you've already accepted, you should ask them to send you a PDF. What was weird to me was that they won't send anything written until they receive a verbal agreement--very different from other fields that I know about (e.g., Economics)

Q: Thank you so much! In your experience, how long has it typically taken to get the PDF and snail mail version after the verbal acceptance?

A: PDF should come within a couple of days after acceptance. I'm not sure about snail mail--I got a call on Wednesday and am still waiting for the print version.

Q: Thank you!

Once I return from a campus visit, I send to the people I met a thank you email. Ussually, half or more of the people respond with a brief and nice text. In my last visit, just one person responded, which is very intriguing because I feel the visit went very, very well, and they were super polite during my time there.  My question is: there are policies in some deparments that state do not answer after campus visit emails in order to don't create false expectations? Should I take this as a bad sign? What has been you experience with the responses to these emails? Thanks![]

A: I don't think you should read too much into either situation. Sometimes departments have a policy of not communicating with candidates, or that only the SCC should communicate. Sometimes they respond politely or even enthusiastically, but you still don't get the job.

How was your MLA experience?[]

Really good! Affirming to share my work! How bout y'all?

R2: Interviews in the main hall are kind of akward (when you see the people you interviewed before in the next table).

R3: Didn't really enjoy having other interviewers stand next to me talking while I was interviewing in the main hall but other than that it was good. Almost calming to see other people as nervous as you.

R4:: Boston was great. Great city for interviews, I had fun!

For international students: Is it possible to get a campus visit after being asked in the phone interview if I am authorized to work in the US?[]

How do you get contacted by the University/College to arrange an interview ? Phone, e-mail, postal letter...?[]

It seems to depend on the school. I've been contacted by phone by some and by email by one. Snail mail doesn't seem like it would be very efficient for finding a time that works for all parties...

How much is "competitive salary?"[]

There are several meanings for "competitive salary." It can mean that the salary is comparable to a similiar institution. It can mean that the salary is negotiable to be higher if a candidate has other offers. It can mean that the salary is competitive for the area (i.e. the salary is very good for the Midwest, but wouldn't get you a studio apartment in New York). Personally, I go to www.glassdoor.com to see the salary ranges. In states with open records or for some public institutions, you should be able to see the current salaries of the professors working there. Many local newspapers will have that information in a searchable database. Forewarned is forearmed. Don't go into a salary negotiation blind. If the job can't increase the amount of money offered, then look for increased benefits like a bigger research or travel budget.

The Chronicle's "Average Faculty Salaries" data is a good resource. (http://chronicle.com/article/faculty-salaries-data-2012/131431#id=144050 ). That said, the numbers are always inflated by the professional school professors (read you will probably never make the average amount as a humanities professor). States oftentimes provide reliable online salary information for public university professors. Cross reference the Chronicle and the state site, and then check your findings against a cost-of-living calculator. That will give you a pretty decent idea of how much you will or will not be making and whether you consider it to be "competitive".

Check salaries in Public Universities, all of which are public information state by state. Just look for the database of public employees in each state adn then run the names of assistant professors. That will give you a clear idea of how much universities pay. If you are applying to private schools, small, non-prestigious schools will usually pay about 10% less than the state Us and liberal art colleges and research privates will usually run 10-20% above the publics.

Is there any future for those of us holding a Ph.D. in Spanish outside academia?[]

  • Government jobs take forever to hear back from, but many of them have a need for people who can read, speak, and write in Spanish. You can also search in specific regional areas, which can be particularly useful for those who have partners/children and do not wish to take a $30,000/year job in an undesirable location. Tryhttp://www.usajobs.gov
  • Translation, especially medical translation. Some states have exam or licensing requirements; some states have none.
  • Private high schools. You get around the state teaching certificate requirements this way.
  • There are also jobs within the Academy that are off the tenure track. Look into attending an Alternate Academic Career panel (commonly abbreviated as altac or alt-ac) at the upcoming MLA conference. I know that this seriously boosted my confidence regarding life outside of the academy.
  • Administration or management of any company. We are multilingual. We have excellent written and verbal skills. Administrative secretaries can make more than starting Assistant Professors. Teaching a classroom is like being a manager (they call it classroom management for a reason!).
  • Textbook publishers. Someone has to review those textbooks. You can also end up peddling them.
  • Editorials or academic presses. Someone has to proofread and attend conferences to hawk the goods.
  • To be all Pollyanna about this: yes there is a future outside the Academy. Your future is what YOU make it. It is unfortunate that the Academy is moving towards adjuncts and lectureships rather than true job security. Don't take a job that will make you miserable or undervalue or under pay you; you deserve a living wage and a reasonable amount of work.

R: Thanks for your answer. Yes defenitly there are another options.

R: Than you so much. Very helpful! Thought about starting a business to help PH.D's leave academia?

R: I have thought about writing a book about surviving life before, during, and after the PhD (with a focus on what to do if you don't land on the tenure track), and once my PhD is defended, I plan on shopping it to a few presses.

Does anyone have ideas on how to get more info on Academic Editing?[]

R: I don't have first-hand knowledge, but whenever I talk to editors at the MLA, they are very nice and attentive. I would go to MLA and network with editors and see what positions are open. You can also email the editors for more information.

Are any atheists/agnostis applying to private, religious institutions? If so, how will/are you going to handle the statement of faith?[]

I would start the statement by saying: "I used to belive in God... but then I turned nine".

R: But seriously, if you get a request for a statement of faith, do you just say "Miércoles, the jig is up!"?

R2: It depends on the institution. Do your homework - for example if the institution's a member of the CCCU, then an atheist/agnostic is probably not going to fit there. That said private religious institutions run the gamut from those that require doctrinal statements to those that acknowledge a historical link and everything in between. One way or the other be honest.

A point for the first reply, great! What I do is taking a look at the mission statement and focus more on social justice, equality and liberal art education. It worked for me. Now, if the institution asks me for a letter from my pastor, I put the application in the trash directly. So, there all kind of religious institutions. I taught in one college where the only thing that people did was praying (saying good thoughts) before the faculty meetings, but, nothing else.

Inside Higher Ed just published an essay about interviewing with religiously-affiliated (in the cases described, Christian) colleges: http://www.insidehighered.com/advice/2012/12/19/essay-interviews-church-related-colleges

When should we assume we have been definitively rejected? Do all institutions send rejection emails/letters? (question moved from talk)[]

(answer moved from talk) If you do not recieve an invitation to MLA/phone interview by the time of the MLA, then it's a safe bet you're out of the running (but remember: sometimes interview invitations arrive just a few days before the MLA). Not all institutions send rejections (and some only send them to you if you were interviewed or had a campus visit).

Are Skype or phone interviews in Hispanic Studies departments run in Spanish, English or both? What is your experience?[]

In my experience in both, but more in Spanish than in English.

A2 My experience -as non-native English speaker- is the opposite: 90% English, 10% or less in Spanish. Small colleges with foreign language departments interview mainly in English to make sure that the candidate will be able to communicate effectively with other faculty members and staff. In some cases you will be also in charge of a literature in translation class. So, it makes sense.

A3. Be able to do it 100% in either one. Take this rule as a rule for interviews in general. There is no rule of thumb as the above poster suggests. It will have to do with many different things specific to both the insitution and the committee.

Do you usually send thank-you notes after Skype or phone interviews?[]

Yes, just like after any job interview it adds a nice touch to say something brief, positive and specific about the interview (so it's not like a generic form letter). It's helpful to include the names of all people on the call, if possible.

Thanks! And do they usually respond? A: it depends, some people do, but usually they don't. Thanks!!

What would you do if a university does not want to give you the 2 required weeks to accept or reject an offer?[]

Word on the Street[]

Did anyone every accept the SRU position?

Any word from Bucknell or Denison for their visiting positions?

Don't bother to apply to the Assistant Professor of Spanish and Theater Art position at the University of Miami? It is for the partner of a recent hired professor. A: This is outrageous! I wish I had read this before. I spent my weekend writing this letter. A2: yeah, me too. That sucks. :(

I haven't heard a word after 3 weeks and I wonder: Is it correct to write an email to the search committee inquiring about the state of the hiring process or should I wait? Thanks! Answer: No. You may not contact the search committee. It is unprofessional. Don't do it.

  • how is it unprofessional?  Exactly.  It's not unprofessional to ask politely about the status of your candidacy. You have nothing to lose and it's only normal to want to know.

Any news from Iona? (1/25) I've heard nothing from Iona. (2/12)

(1/25) Did anybody ever hear anything from University of St. Thomas in Minnesota? I don't even know if they conducted interviews, and their deadline was 10/15. A: Yes, they sent out Campus visit requests two weeks ago via email. They conducted interviews at the MLA and have contacted the finalists for on-campus interviews. Q: Thanks!

Any news from Rutgers? (Jan 24)

Has anyone been invited to visit Spelman?  I haven't heard a PEEP out of them since the MLA.... I haven't heard anything from them either (1/25) A: Looks like they are having campus visits now. Wondering if anyone has heard from Spelman since campus visit? I still haven’t heard anything since mine.

Any news from University of San Diego?

- campus visits for 3 finalists begin the first week in February.  Q: Is it safe to assume that the've already contacted all three finalists then?

Any news from University of South Carolina?

Still nothing from Stonehill College? A: They decided to go with the first person they flew out (firsthand). I wish more places would do this.

Any campus visit invitations for Boston College (Assistant Professor of Practice in Spanish)? A) Yesterday (1/24) I posted a campus interview request from Stonehill.

Any news from University of Akron? At least one campus visit scheduled, second hand.

Has anyone heard anything from Tennessee Chattanooga? Campus visit scheduled.

Any news from California State San Bernardino? No, and seriously, what is up with them? Someone just posted today that an offer was made and accepted.

Any news from Gustavus Adolphus?

Any news from The Citadel? A: Second-hand, I know they've asked at least one candidate for a campus visit.

Inside candidate at SUNY for the XIXthe century position? Does anybody know something about it? A: You're talking about Stony Brook, right? I think there is one, that is my hunch as well. A: Yes, Stony Brook, there's a VAP with the same profile as the job description...

Anyone heard from Saint Joseph's post-MLA?  They said they were meeting to discuss results of MLA interviews on 1/14. No news yet 1/17. Campus visit scheduled 01/16.  <Good luck...anyone else? Any news or job offers after campus visits? Offer accepted (second hand) ; Many congrats to the recipient of the position!

Has anyone heard from Kalamazoo College? A: No word since the MLA. Anyone else?

  • What were others told about the timetable for Kalamazoo? A: Timetable they told me at the MLA was end of January, good luck to all! Q: Any possibility of an inside candidate for Kalamazoo C? A: Talked last week, 1/28 or so, to someone connected to but not in the department. My understanding is that the inside candidate is not the favorite for the job. Don't know about reliability, but seemed like legit info. Take it with a grain of salt and all.

Has anyone heard about the UVA searches?

Any news from Rutgers-Candem after MLA? (x2: Any news? - 1/18)

Any news from Bucknell after the MLA?

News from South Dakota State University? (x2: Amy news?)

Has anyone heard from Sam Houston State University? Nothing. Did they even do first interviews?

News from Hendrix College? Have campus interviews been scheduled?

  • A:Yes, they have been sheduled and done.

Has anyone heard anything from MCLA (Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts)?

  • A: Haven't heard, but when I logged into MLA list recently it said they had proceded to the interview stage :(
  • A. MCLA was interviewing candidates in Boston.

Any news from Long Island University?

  • Would love to know this too. Deadline was early, weird no one has heard...

Towson University? I heard that they already hired someone.

Has anyone heard from UT Arlington?

  • A: Nope
  • A: Han ampliado el plazo de entrega de solicitudes (información MUY fiable).

Wake Forest? Any news?

  • A: Nope, nothing. I've been wondering about it too. It seems that in the past, interviews were conducted much much later (April?). I hope they don't wait that long this time.
  • A: Are you talking about the linguistics job or the other one (interdisciplinary, discourse analysis)? I applied for the latter and just recently received a snail mail confirmation of receipt of my application saying they are reviewing materials, but it didn't say anything about time frame or procedure. They must not be interviewing at the MLA, but I'm not sure, beyond that.
  • A: WFU Romance Languages does not conduct MLA interviews. Once the committee makes the initial cut, they will contact to set up phone interviews.
  • A: Personally, I think its ridiculous to wait this much to contact candidates for the first round of interviews. I guess its their strategy...
  • I agree. They are taking way too long, and at this point campus visits are already taking place and offers being made. It even makes me think that it is not such a good place to work... probably disorganized.
  • They suck. They are playing games, and are not professional.
  • They DO suck. They are racist and homophobic. Unless you are baptist, there is nothing good waiting there for you. I worked there for two years and got out as soon as I could.
  • I don’t know what the protocol is in these wiki forums for dealing with the kind of tripe that the disgruntled former employee of WFU has written, but as a current faculty member of the department I will respond to his comments and then offer a brief update on the two searches we are conducting.
  • The allegation that “they” (unclear whether he is referring to the university administration or the department members) are racist and homophobic is false. You have no grounds for either statement.  Demographically the student population is primarily white, but so are all of WFU’s peer institutions, to say nothing of most of this country’s private institutions of higher learning. And with recent policy changes for admissions (including the elimination of the SAT requirement) and additional scholarships for economically challenged students, the university is making advances in bringing more African-American and Hispanic students to campus. Regarding the LGBTQ community on campus, there is an active group openly homosexual students and faculty on campus. Check the diversity page on the university website for more information about these two points.
  • The comment about religion is so far afield of rational evaluation as to be laughable. The university broke its affiliation with the North Carolina Baptist convention more than a decade ago. There is still a Baptist school of divinity on campus and there is a Baptist congregation that meets on Sundays in Wait chapel (two of the female pastors are lesbians, by the way). But we also have an imam and a rabbi on campus who oversee Muslim and Jewish spiritual needs on campus respectively. In the Christian denominations there are Catholic, Presbyterian, Episcopal, Lutheran, and Wesleyan ministers in addition to the Baptist religious staff. And, as a personal note, your comment that nothing good awaits candidates who don’t fit a particular religious profile is a slap in the face to colleagues who listened to you pontificate and whine and still went to bat for you.
  • And for the last and most egregious misrepresentation of your rant. You did not get out as soon as you could. You fought tooth and nail to keep your lectureship and were denied contract renewal. You did not make a heroic exit. You were let go.
  • And now for the update on the two searches being currently conducted by the department. Three linguistics candidates have been invited to campus. As for the discourse analysis position, the committee was formed two weeks ago. They are currently reviewing files and should contact candidates for phone interviews shortly.
  • HI AGAIN. FIRST OF ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ALL THE INFORMATION BEFORE POSTING ANYTHING. I GOT A RENEWAL OFFER IN NOVEMBER BASED ON MY TEACHING PERFORMANCE AND PEER AND STUDENT EVALUATIONS, AND THEN THE OFFER WAS RESCINDED WHEN THE SON OF A DONOR COMPLAINED TO HIS DAD THAT I HAD CORRECTED HIM IN CLASS FOR SAYING THAT "HOMOSEXUALS ARE ANIMALS AND THEY SHOULD BE KILLED". I CORRECTED HIM BY TELLING HIM THAT BIGOTRY WAS NOT ACCEPTED IN MY CLASSROOM AND THAT HE SHOULD NOT SPEAK THAT WAY. THE DEPARTMENT DID NOT SUPPORT ME AND I HAD TO FIND ANOTHER JOB. YES, YOU ARE RIGHT, IT IS PRETTY CLEAR THAT YOU ARE NEITHER HOMOPHOBIC NOR BAPTIST.
  • Comments: it is bad that we need to find information about the position in wiki rather than being contacted by the WFU Department, I guess they will reject my application in May, or never? As for the discussion here about the exiting faculty member... very agresssive on both parts, so no comments.
  • ^This was thoroughly entertaining; both parties. Maybe I'm being naive, but I have to think it's pretty easy to avoid these types of conflicts within departments.
  • NoteUniversities to fear is the page where people usually post comments such as the above.

University of Michigan?

  • nothing.
  • Still no news (12/26)?
  • MLA interview scheduled 12/18.

Any news from University of Iowa (campus visits)?

  • No. A. Really? Nada yet? (12/28).
  • Rejection E-mail (second-hand, not sure when)

Has anyone heard from St. Ambrose U? I ask because I didn't even get a confirmation e-mail.

  • I had a phone interview with them a few weeks ago - my understanding is that they only interviewed 6 candidates.
  • A. I interviewed with them 2 weeks ago, in the email they sent, it stated that they were only going to talk to 6 candidates, and invite 3 to campus. They say they will make the invitations by the end of the 1st week of January.
  • Have any of you gotten word about a campus visit? Any visits scheduled?
  • A. Got an email with campus visit invitation Jan/10, to go early Feb.

Any news from Tennessee-Chattanooga or South Florida (Medieval/Golden Age)?

  • South Florida has scheduled phone interviews 12/21.

Bucknell?

  • scheduled, second hand reliable.

Anyone heard anything from Ohio State regarding the indigenous studies job?

  • I heard through the grapevine that they had a short list of under ten people about a month ago and had proceeded with that.

Anyone know what the procedure is for Westminster College? Someone posted that they have a campus visit already; did they already conduct Skype or phone interviews?  ------> I had a Skype interview on 12/10 and 48 hours later they invited me for a campus viist.  I am going early Jan.  ---> Okay, thanks for the info, and congrats!

George Washington?? Any word from them? Something was posted 12/6 and then erased. Thanks! ---> Still nothing?

Any news out there, especially for the University of Chicago? ---> materials requests posted above, 11/14-16. ---> They have invited people for interviews

Has anyone heard from Gustavus Adolphus since they requested more materials? ---> I was just wondering the same thing! No, I have not heard anything yet.  I haven't heard anything either (12/17). ---> Nor have I (12/17), but according to this wiki, they have already scheduled at least one MLA interview. --> I also was asked for additional materials but haven't heard anything since.  (12/18) -->  They scheduled MLA interviews last month (12/24) --> I got a rejection email 12/22

Anything from McDaniel?  There closing date was October 19th!  I have the same question!!!!!  Dying to hear about that one.  Now expecting the worst.  :(  Is it possible they are not interviewing/have and insider candidate? ----> A: They've been conducting interviews. A: I heard this was an inside job. A look at the department's webpage reveals that half of the department is from the same (generously put, average) Ph.D program as a VAP. It seems likely that the rumor is true.

Any news from Christopher Newport (Va)?

  • Ling or lit? Literature.
  • There's an MLA interview posted 12/17, but doesn't specify field.

Has anyone heard from Texas Lutheran?? ---> Nope (12/7). -----> Sent out requests for phone interviews on 12/18.

Any word on any of the Med / Early Modern jobs??

Anyone has received or know anything about Oregon State? Last communication was "your application is still under consideration."

  • I got the same email about a week or so ago....

The Vent[]

This is a space to vent. Sometimes you just need to let off a little steam because the job market makes us all a little stressed and crazy.

I saw this in the venting page . It is so good that I want to share it.Edit[]

" So I swore this wouldn't happen anymore but I fell for it again and now I just feel like such an idiot. I mean sometimes you know going into a campus visit that you're not exactly their type, so you can protect yourself and not expect too much. But this time I really got duped by their sweet talk about how amazing I was and what an exciting future we’d have together. Everything seemed to go well and at dinner I really felt a spark, like a deep human connection that stays with you and at the end of the night it seemed like they couldn't wait to call me, too. But it's been days since they said they'd call and I haven't heard anything. I'm so confused. What we had felt special to me and I thought it meant something to them, too! I don't know what happened. Maybe they just feed everyone the same lines even if they’re not interested in getting serious. What hurts so much, of course, is that it felt serious to me. I thought that what we had was real. It’s been easy to move on when a department is clearly not into me, but it’s the mixed signals that I can’t get over. I guess they were just trying to keep their options open, but it felt so genuine that I let my guard down and now I feel like such a fool. I know that it’s dumb to want to be with a department that’s interested in someone else, but it’s hard to let go of what might have been. I thought my lonely, anxious days were over and that I was finally getting my happily-ever-after. What did I do wrong? Getting through the day is really hard. Every time I get an email I think it's them. I keep checking my phone to see if I’ve missed a call. When I see other people going about their business, happily doing their jobs, I just feel so alone, like I'll be unemployed forever. I don’t know what else I can do. I’ve really tried to put myself out there and do all the things you’re supposed to do to seem attractive. People tell me that I’m a catch, that any department would be lucky to have me. But after so many ups and downs, it’s getting harder and harder to imagine that anybody will ever choose me in the end. My friends have been so great, so patient even though I can’t help needing to talk about the visit with them over and over again. They say that there are other jobs in the sea, that I can’t let one setback get me down. It’s only a matter of time. There's a department out there for me. But honestly, everybody knows that there just isn’t much available these days. More and more departments aren’t interested in long-term commitment when so many fresh, young adjuncts are willing to meet their needs for next to nothing. They say that jobs are such a mystery. You just can’t predict how things play out and a department that appreciates me for who I am will come along when I least expect it."

It made me laugh until I cried. Then I just cried ;)Edit[]

arg......the waiting is killing me.

Q: Any ideas out there on why search committees might schedule one interview/campus visit immediately, then wait weeks before scheduling the next one?  I assumed that committees would sit down together and look at all the apps at once, arrive at a consensus, then call the top canditates on the same day.  But apparently it doesn't always work this way.

2/9: Is it just me or does it seem like search committees, deans, etc. are really taking their time on letting candidates know about their final decisions? I've had flyouts from 1/14 to just recently and keep getting encouraging emails saying, be patient, it's all happening, we'll let you know soon, etc. etc. But argh, the waiting.

This whole process has led me to loathe myself. I know that I had some bad MLA interviews so to not hear from those people is somewhat expected. What I don't understand is when I absolutely murder the interview, I'm told by the interviewing team that I would be "perfect for the job" and then I don't hear from them. (x2) I'm so sorry! Don't loathe yourself. So much of this process is about fit. I also think being overqualified is a key component in whether or not you get called back. I've gotten called overqualified straight out--um, no, that just means I'm EXTRA qualified and I need a damn job so come on, please.

I am sure I am not the first one to post this, but after the time and money we spent on applications, is it really so hard for the Universities to send a rejection email? Is it another way to let us know that we are undeserving and useless? I for one think that as a community we should strongly complain about this common labor practice. It is insulting and disrespectful. This post is dedicated to Spring Hill College, Amherst College, George Institute of Technology, Center College, Clark University, University of California, Merced faculty and administrative staff. / I TOTALLY AGREE! I think that is is so unprofessinal how we handle job interviewing and placement in the humanities or maybe in academia in general! I am so tired of waiting and waiting...it has been almost 3 months after a campus interview I had in December and I still have not even received an email rejection! Really people! We need to find a better way to streamline and professionalize this whole process!  <-- I agree! I thought I was the only one! I went on a campus interview in January and never heard a peep from them since. Another one in February, same thing. I'm not asking for a pity package of gifts or anything, not even a real letter, just a damn email saying "we've chosen someone else"!!

Good/Bad Interview Experiences?Edit[]

Backlog because of Hurricane SandyEdit[]

I'm really surprised to see that so few schools have contacted candidates yet. Also many dossiers did not arrive on time through Interfolio after Hurricane Sandy passed through D.C. Does anyone know how search committees are responding to this?

R: I know a few schools made accomodations or extended their deadlines, but others (probably those not on the affected coast) did nothing.

Does anyone else feel like this is prom all over again and that no one wants to take you? (aka Why does no one want to interview me?)[]

Hahaha, yes. I can commiserate (although I never went to prom... probably because gay people weren't welcome and because I dropped out of high school a year early). I think it's important for us ABDs and recently-graduated PhDs to remember that since 2008, the market has been apocalyptically bad, as indicated in MLA's annual graph indicating the number of jobs per year published in the Job Information List. Thankfully it's been slowly improving in 2011 and 2012, but there are 4 years of backlogged, recently-graduated PhDs who, for the past several years, have had to settle for poorly-paid non-tenure-track positions in all kinds of random locations due to a lack of jobs to apply for. Now that there are finally some Assistant Professorships out there—positions traditionally offered to graduating or recently-graduated PhDs—I get the impression that people with a PhD in hand and several years of full-time teaching experience (not to mention additional publications they've landed since graduating) are squashing much of the ABD competition this year. I could be completely wrong about this, but this is the general sense I get about this year's market. It may be that many of us newbies to the market will have to settle for less-than-desirable positions this year just as our colleagues in recent years have had to do while we wait for demand to catch up with supply. Consequently, I have just broadened my search parameters for my job search (lecturer positions and jobs at community colleges, although the community college jobs I've seen advertised in November are for January start dates, which leads me to believe that they generally don't advertise as far in advance as universities). There are, of course, some other things to keep in mind:

1) I'm new to this too and don't have a very good idea of what I'm talking about.

2) It's still very early to be panicking, since it seems that most search committees have yet to send anyone any kind of communication, and some search committees wait until the week before MLA to schedule interviews.

3) Some universities and colleges don't go to MLA and schedule their initial round of interviews in the Spring.

4) Probably the most important thing to remember: so little of this whole process has to do with you. It has to do with the specific needs of departments. Your research, CV, teaching evaluations, etc. can be absolutely stellar, but if you're not exactly what they're looking for or close to it, you won't get interviewed. This whole process is subject to chance, personal connections, an infinite number of variables that are completely out of your control, and in some cases, dumb luck (where some random, seemingly unimportant thing on your CV impresses some random committee member in way that sets you above the rest in his/her mind).

Anyway, I hope this helps a little bit. It's funny how we spend 5 years trying to develop thick skin (between rejections from journals and less-than-complimentary follow-up questions at conferences), only to feel more vulnerable than ever when going on the job market. It's a tough, often discouraging time, but we just have to remember it's all about perserverance. We just have to have faith and stick it out—like so many have been doing since 2008—and eventually, we'll get asked to a prom. So keep practicing your dance moves! Our time to dance will come!

R: Thanks a lot. I feel better knowing I'm not the only one out there that feels super jealous seeing that folks have interview requests already. Congrats to those guys though. It's professional jealousy, not like, crazy jealousy.

Wright SU[]

Rejection letters: "your experience and/or qualifications do not meet the minimum requirements" ... rather an odd way of saying they have decided to eliminate ABDs from their pool of applicants (despite the announcement stipulating that the minimum requirement is that Ph.D. be in hand by 8/15/13 start date), but that's apparently what happened. I double-checked with the HR office that the decision came from the search committee and not from an effort in HR to weed out ABDs.

Received same email with exact same wording, and I already have my Ph.D. Looks like they might have an internal candidate? Nice school, would have been a nice place to start. Don't get discouraged! Somebody needs your research! You can make it!

Ditto. I wish they hadn't wasted our time by saying they would consider ABD status. If they wanted PhD in hand, they should have just said so. Plenty of other positions made it clear ABD status wasn't going to get you a second glance. I doubt it's an internal candidate; I would hazard a guess that they got inudated with applicants and the easiest way to hack through the pile is to cut out ABD and too newly minted PhDs.

Thank you both for the commiseration and encouragement! Good luck to you (well, to us all)!

There is indeed an internal candidate. That being said, they have scheduled interviews with other candidates as well (not with me, however.)

Just because someone is already working at an institution/knows someone at an institution does not mean there is an "internal candidate" and that the search is a sham. From personal experience, sometimes the "internal candidate" thinks s/he is a sure thing and does not put as much effort in as an external candidate. Also, the market has been weak for almost five years; there are lots of people applying to fewer and fewer TT positions. Besides, would we really want to work at an institution that hired an "internal candidate" rather than the best candidate? It's a slap in the face, but we were only out our cover letters/CVs and didn't have to pay to send our recommendation letters in.

I am ABD, applied for this position and did not received any email (yet). So, maybe the rejection has nothing to do with the ABD/PhD status.

You are right, and I was apparently wrong in my initial assumptions. They have since apologized for the misleading wording in their rejection e-mail and clarified that not meeting "the minimum requirements" is not a reference to anyone's ABD status. They have apparently tried to change the wording, but the legal department in HR won't allow it, despite the fact that it sends an incorrect message to applicants.

Thanks for following up. It is rather unfortunate wording, and their HR department should consider a better way of saying "Thanks but no thanks" for academic positions.

Post-docs, Lecturer and Visiting positions[]

Thanks[]

Try http://www.usajobs.gov

Did anyone ever accept the SRU position?

Sorry to post this here; if someone could move it to the right spot, it would be great, but I keep getting error messages in the other fields:

Middle Georgia State College (Georgia), Lecturer Position 5/5.

Application deadline is April 30th.

What happened with the Medieval/Colonial position at Middlebury College after the campus visits? They took place almost 2 months ago!!!

The Citadel: Has anyone received an offer?  Any inside info? Yes, an offer has been made.

Any news from U of St. Thomas (MN) (Linguistics) after campus visits?

Saint Michael's College: search cancelled.  The Board decided not to fund the position.

There is an internal candidate at Roanoke College.

My interviewers at the MLA told me I would get an answer within 2 weeks.

  • ^Sadly, yes, you are being naive. It is not easy to avoid conflict in a department where people hold grudges, dislike, or antagonize their colleagues. Even when you think you are "safe" by not participating in other peoples' conflicts, it may still bite you. And hard. I've got the bitemarks to prove it, and all thanks to my naive belief that I could be everyone's friend in my dysfunctional and divisive department. Sorry to sound bitter, but this is real talk.
  • Note: Universities to fear is the page where people usually post comments such as the above.
  • Invited for a campus visit; still no word (3/28); at this point not holding my breath.

It is so good that I want to share it.[]

Then I just cried ;)[]

arg......the waiting is killing me.

Good/Bad Interview Experiences?[]

Backlog because of Hurricane Sandy[]
