American University of Central Asia - Assistant Professor of Russian Language, Literature, and Culture

• AUCA is a university in the American Liberal Arts tradition located in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.  Bishkek is a lovely, primarily Russian-speaking city, and AUCA pays a salary that allows faculty to live quite comfortably.  The positions advertised are ideal for dual career academic families, as we can generally find teaching opportunities in the university for academic spouses.  Teaching load is comparable to that of an American liberal arts college.  AUCA is an ideal place to build a teaching career for a few years.

Cambridge University - Lectureship (Assistant Professorship) in Pre-Modern East Slavic Culture

Colgate University - Assistant Professor of Russian

• Colgate University seeks an Assistant Professor of Russian and Eurasian Studies for a tenure-track position beginning fall semester 2014. Fluency in Russian and English is a given, along with a dynamic teaching presence in language and non-language courses. Harvard University - Assistant Professor of Russian Literature and Culture

• The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures seeks to appoint a tenure-track assistant professor in Russian literature and culture. The appointment is expected to begin on July 1, 2014. The tenure-track professor will be responsible for teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, typically two courses per semester, and will be expected to share in the administrative and advising duties of faculty in the Department as well as to participate broadly in the academic culture of the university. Expertise in poetry and the ability to teach poetry are preferred, but in other respects the fields of expertise required for the position are open. Princeton University - Assistant Professor of Slavic Languages and Literatures

• The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures of Princeton University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in Russian literature and culture to begin September 1, 2014. We are looking for an imaginative and energetic scholar with broad interests and the ability to teach a variety of courses. Candidates for the position must have native or near-native command of both Russian and English. Field of specialization is open. So: either it's gone to the VAP, or they haven't made an offer yet. They told me at my interview that it'd be last week, but maybe they are late? University of Rochester - Language Coordinator

The University of Rochester’s School of Arts and Sciences invites applications for the position of Language Coordinator. Under the supervision of the dean of Arts and Sciences, the Language Coordinator will work with faculty, department chairs, and program heads throughout the school to promote second-language acquisition. The School of Arts and Sciences currently offers fifteen languages and English as a second language; we will be incrementally adding five additional languages beginning in the fall semester of 2014.

The University of Rochester has vibrant programs in languages and cultures, and a significant portion of the undergraduate student body enrolls in languages even though there is no language requirement. The Language Coordinator will have a background in language pedagogy or second-language acquisition; will be qualified to teach elementary and intermediate courses in one or more of the following languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swahili, Turkish; and will be able to work with programs offering classical Greek, Latin and American Sign Language. The Coordinator will be responsible for managing enrollments in first- and second-year language courses, working with faculty on student placement, observing and evaluating non-tenure-track instructors, assisting with the development of syllabi, delivering a pedagogy course and ongoing seminars for new teaching assistants, and helping to develop multilingual and multicultural awareness across campus. The Coordinator will also work with faculty and staff on the use of technology in second-language teaching and learning.

The successful candidate for this position will be an enthusiastic champion of the importance of language learning in a multicultural and global environment, and will have strong interpersonal and organizational skills. A master’s degree in a language and cultural tradition or language pedagogy is required; a PhD in a related area is strongly preferred. The Coordinator must also have college-level teaching experience, a background in theories of second-language acquisition, and expertise in multimedia and other technological approaches to language learning.

University of Texas at Austin - Lecturer in Czech

The Department of Slavic and Eurasian Studies at the University of Texas at Austin invites applications for a one-year lecturer, with the possibility of renewal, beginning in fall 2014 through spring 2015. Amherst College Postdoctoral Fellowship in Russian Art

Amherst’s Robert E. Keiter 1957 Fund for Postdoctoral Fellows, with matching funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, supports exceptionally promising young scholars for two years of half-time teaching (one course each semester) and half-time research at the College. As part of the Keiter Fellowship program, Amherst will appoint a postdoctoral fellow as a Visiting Assistant Professor in Russian Art for the academic years 2014-16. This Keiter Postdoctoral Fellowship is a full-time salaried appointment that is open only to those who will have completed all requirements for the Ph.D. by September 2014 and who have not already held a regular faculty appointment.

We invite applications from candidates whose work concerns Russian art history and visual culture in Russia. The ideal candidate will have both training in art history and broad knowledge of Russian language and culture. The Fellow will teach courses in English in the context of the Russian Department’s curriculum. For both teaching and research, the Fellow should expect to draw on the Whitney Collection of Russian Art at Amherst’s Mead Art Museum and the collection of artists’ books at the Amherst Center for Russian Culture.

College of William and Mary Postdoc in Russian and Post-Soviet Studies

The Russian and Post-Soviet Studies Program of the College of William & Mary invites applications from recent Ph.D.s for the position of a Mellon Faculty Fellow in the humanities or social sciences. Russian and Post-Soviet Studies is an interdisciplinary major that focuses on culture, history and politics of a vast region spanning from East-Central Europe to Siberia and Central Asia and is supported by faculty affiliates from several departments. 

The successful candidate will have a two-year appointment, a reduced three-course load per year, a salary of $50,000, and will also benefit from mentorship and research support. The qualifications are Ph.D. in hand at the time of appointment (August 10, 2014), and a demonstrated interest in blending undergraduate teaching with research. An interest and expertise in European Studies will also be helpful.

Columbia University Harriman Institute Postdocs

The Postdoctoral Fellows Program  enables junior scholars who have recently received the Ph.D. to spend an academic year at the Harriman Institute, working on the revision of their individual research and participating in the life of the Harriman Institute and Columbia. As members of the Columbia University, fellows receive access to a full range of resources, and the Institute makes every effort to provide desk space for all postdoctoral fellows.

The Harriman Institute has four types of postdoctoral fellowships: general (two positions), core project (two positions), the INTERACT Central Asia postdoc (one position), and the Ukrainian Studies postdoc (one semester-long position). Candidates should indicate which programs they are applying for in their cover letters. The Core Project is devoted to a specific theme each year; the core project for 2014-2015 is "Learning from Transition: From the Local to the Global."

Eligibility for the 2014 competition is restricted to those who have received the Ph.D. between July 31, 2011 and June 30, 2014 and do not hold a tenure-track position. All fellows must have successfully defended and deposited their dissertations prior to the commencement of the fellowship.

Columbia University Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Ukrainian Studies

The Harriman Institute invites applications for a post-doctoral research scholar in Ukrainian studies, for one semester (Fall or Spring) in the academic year 2014-2015.   The scholar will teach one course of broad interest to upper level undergraduates and/or master’s degree students.  Eligibility is restricted to those who have received the Ph.D. between July 31, 2011 and June 30, 2014, and who do not hold a tenure-track position. The area of research and teaching specialization is open, but should be focused on some aspect of current Ukrainian life, politics, and/or international affairs.  The visitor is expected to give one public lecture and to participate in the academic life of the Harriman Institute.  The position comes with a stipend of $25,000.  This position is made possible by generous support of the Petro Jacyk Ukrainian Studies Fund.

Anyone know who is chairing the search committee for Colgate? 

• I don't know the answer to the previous question, but I'm wondering if anybody else noticed this proliferation of lecturer positions: a few of them don't seem too different in their requirements from regular tenure-track jobs, with more coursework. Seems like a new way to try and have it both ways: someone who'd be there long-term, but pay them less, have them teach more courses, and invest in them not at all.
• Yes, definitely. Although, in fairness (?), I think the "lecturer" positions imply that the courseload will cnsist largely of language teaching.  Not that this is in any way fair, but it is certainly nothing new that institutions reserve the professorial/TT ranks for literature faculty and relegate language faculty to "lecturer" ranks. The idea being, I guess, that those teaching primarily language classes are less likely to produce the kind of scholarship (monographs) that traditionally leads to a successful tenure case.  I am not a fan of this two-tier system myself but it seems to be common across lang+lit departments.

• Well, except that at least 4 of the 10 positions listed anove call for teaching literature and/or culture: i.e., these "lecturers" are patently not "just" "language faculty".

• The casualiztion of academic labor has been noted and bemoaned for the last twenty years.  If you're not familiar with the process by which our profession is being marginalized, you might want to start with Frank Donahue's "The Last Professors."

• I don't know about you, but I'm neither. My Russian is very good ("superior" according to the opi), but I still don't consider myself "near native." Anywhere except in job applications, of course.  
• I couldn't agree more that "near native" is a worthless description of language skills.  But there it is staring back at me from my CV, as well...  

Were any interviews conducted in Russian this year? => Last year one of my interviews was entirely in Russian, one entirely in English, and the others a mix.  This year all my interviews were conducted in a mix of English and Russian, and the interview for the position I actually got also included (to my shock and horror) a few sentences in some of the other languages I have listed on my CV.

• Almost every interview I had was in English with a very short section in Russian. The only exceptions were interviews for VAP positions (the only times anyone asked me about my research in Russian, or wanted me to speak for longer than, say, 4 minutes). So far no one has tried to speak to me in Polish, and thank goodness for that.
