University of California, Santa Cruz (CA) - TT Assistant or Associate Professor, Nineteenth-Century English Literatures in Global/Transnational Context

The Department of Literature at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for an Assistant (tenure track) or Associate (tenured) Professor specializing in nineteenth-century English literatures in global/transnational context. We seek candidates with primary teaching and research interests in British literature, encompassing more than one national or linguistic tradition and/or more than one geographical area. We are particularly interested in candidates who can contribute to existing departmental and divisional/university-wide strengths in any of the following approaches and areas: empire, race, and colonial/postcolonial studies; gender and sexuality studies; urban studies; environmental humanities; Jewish Studies; transatlantic and ocean studies; cognitive humanities and science/technology studies; creative practice; critical theory; digital humanities/new media.

We seek scholars with demonstrated teaching excellence, and with evidence of a developed research trajectory. Candidates will be expected to teach a range of large undergraduate lecture courses as well as smaller courses and seminars, and to contribute significantly to graduate education and the mentoring of graduate students. We are particularly interested in candidates with administrative skill and leadership potential interested in the possibility of directing the Dickens Project, a Multicampus Research Unit (MRU) of the University of California headquartered at UCSC, though they need not be Dickens specialists. The successful candidate must be able to work with students, faculty and staff from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds. We are especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community.

This position carries a five-course equivalency workload, which normally means teaching four courses over three quarters and carrying other academic and service responsibilities.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Assistant professor level: Ph.D. (expected to be conferred by January 1, 2015) or equivalent foreign degree in English, Comparative Literature, or related fields; a record of research and scholarly productivity, including a book in preparation or forthcoming; a record of college teaching; competence in another national or linguistic tradition or geographic area as demonstrated by coursework or training in a language or languages other than English, and/or by research projects centered outside Great Britain.

Associate professor level: Ph.D. or equivalent foreign degree in English, Comparative Literature, or related fields; a record of research and scholarly productivity, including a book published or forthcoming; a record of college teaching; competence in another national or linguistic tradition or geographic area as demonstrated by coursework or training in a language or languages other than English, and/or by research projects centered outside Great Britain.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Assistant Professor: Experience working with graduate students; competence in a relevant second language literature.

Associate Professor: Experience supervising doctoral work; competence in a relevant second language literature.

Francis Marion University is seeking a tenure track, Assistant Professor of English with specialization in British Romantic poetry.

Francis Marion (FM) is a state-supported regional university with a strong emphasis on the liberal arts. With approximately 4,000 undergraduate students, FM offers small class sizes that encourage strong professional relationships among faculty and students. Monmouth College (IL) - TT Assistant Professor, 19th-century British Literature, emphasis on English Romantics

Monmouth College, a residential liberal arts college in west central Illinois and founding member of the Associated Colleges of the Midwest (ACM), invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in 19th-century British literature with emphasis on the English Romantics, beginning August 2015.

Successful candidates will have demonstrated excellence in teaching British literature courses at all undergraduate levels. Candidates should be prepared to teach introductory and advanced courses, including the later British literature survey (Romantics to the Modern period), within an annual 3-3 load; a secondary area of specialization from one of the following areas is strongly preferred: world literature in translation, global Anglophone literature, or U.S. minority literatures. In addition to specialization in Romantic literature, candidates should demonstrate ability to teach our required first-year composition course as well as to contribute enthusiastically to our integrated general education program.   • Wow. There is something really suspicious about this job posting. Two years back they advertised for a visiting position in Victorian literature, and as evidenced by the dept’s faculty listing, they found someone for the limited appointment. But now they switch gears and decide to hire a Romanticist? I can’t help but feel like this is a very callous attempt at cutting out the current adjunct. This economic climate brings out the worst in hiring committees!
  • If they ran a search for Victorian literature everyone would be up in arms that the game is rigged in favor of the inside candidate with callous disregard of all those who take the time to apply!
  • Two years back they advertised for 19th-Century British Literature (a year before Monmouth in NJ hired in Victorian Literature). Although it is perhaps true that 19th-Century positions go to Victorians it is also possible this particular VAP went to a Romanticist and that has caused them to emphasize that for the new TT search.

California State University, Northridge (CA) - TT Assistant Professor, Nineteenth-Century Transatlantic Literature and Culture

Qualifications: Candidates must have a Ph.D. in English or a related field, awarded prior to August 19, 2015. Specialization should be in Nineteenth-Century Transatlantic Literature and Culture with an emphasis on the long nineteenth century (circa 1770-1900). Secondary interests may include the poetry, prose, or theater from this historical period; the literature and culture of the Black Atlantic; transnational approaches to literary and visual print culture, travel and exploration, migration and diaspora, slavery and abolition, colonialism and anti-colonial resistance, or indigenous culture and revolution; the literature and culture of reform movements; the Gothic. An interest in critical theory, Romantic writers, and/or realist or naturalist writers from the period is desirable. Candidate must demonstrate ability to effectively work with a diverse student population.

Evidence of teaching effectiveness and potential for successful research, publication and other scholarly/professional/creative activities required, with publication in the field of specialization desirable.

Responsibilities: The University especially seeks individuals who will contribute to both their chosen disciplines and the University’s commitment to student success. All faculty are expected to serve on departmental and/or university committees, contribute to teaching effectiveness, and demonstrate successful research, publication and other scholarly/professional/creative activities in their field of specialization. The standard teaching load at Northridge is 12 units (4/4) per semester (3/3 for the first two years), although competitive reassigned time is available for research and/or curriculum development. All faculty in the Department of English teach a variety of classes, including General Education courses as well as undergraduate and graduate courses in their specialization. The successful candidate for this position will likely be asked to teach surveys of British and/or American literature and will be encouraged to develop new upper-level and graduate courses in her/his area of expertise. While all full-time faculty remain eligible to teach lower division writing courses, the majority of these courses are taught by lecturer faculty. In practice, lower division writing courses are only assigned to full-time faculty members with specializations in composition or rhetoric, or to those specifically requesting such courses.

University of Delaware (DE) - Advanced Assistant or Associate Professor in Print & Material Culture Studies

The Department of English at the University of Delaware invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor position. The position includes a highly competitive salary, good teaching load, and excellent benefits. We seek candidates, grounded in their primary literary, historical, or rhetorical disciplines, who can add to our strengths in Print and Material Culture Studies while also contributing to our vision of a deeply integrated and interdisciplinary department. Associate or advanced Assistant Professors are preferred; other applicants will be considered only if they can guarantee Ph.D. in hand by August, 2015.

The successful candidate will be an intellectual leader of national reputation (at the Associate level) or an advanced Assistant Professor with an established publishing record who can work with UD’s Center for Material Culture Studies to build the university's reputation as a leading destination for interdisciplinary research and teaching related to the physical evidence of culture. This position provides teaching opportunities in both our undergraduate and our graduate programs and will benefit from the department’s strong affiliations with interdisciplinary studies programs on campus (including Material Culture Studies, Digital Humanities, African American Studies, Environmental Humanities, Interactive Media Studies, and Race & Ethnic Studies, among others), organizations associated with UD faculty (including the Winterthur Museum, Folger Library, Hagley Museum, and The Library Company of Philadelphia), and numerous other archives and resources at the university and in the region.
