Appalachian State University (NC) - TT Assistant/Associate Professor - Professional Writing

The Department of English at Appalachian State University invites applications for a tenure-track position in professional writing at the rank of assistant or associate professor to start July 31, 2015, pending final administrative and budgetary approval. We seek a faculty member committed to excellence in teaching, scholarship, and academic service. The successful candidate will maintain an active research program and teach a 3/3 course load at the upper-division undergraduate and graduate levels with the opportunity to build the program and develop additional courses in areas of special need or interest.

Qualifications: A Ph.D. in professional/technical communication or a closely related field and evidence of successful teaching are required. Evidence of scholarly publication or activity is desirable and required for appointment at the associate level. We especially welcome candidates with auxiliary interests in medical writing, grant writing, crisis communication, digital humanities, intercultural communication, and/or visual rhetoric. An interest in online teaching is an additional plus. Two years professional writing experience preferred.

The Department of English at Auburn University invites applications for a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor in rhetoric and composition to begin Fall 2015. The teaching load is 2-2, with assignments in upper-division and graduate rhetoric and/or composition courses as well as teaching in the first-year composition component of Auburn’s core curriculum. Individuals joining our faculty will be working with us to focus and invigorate our first-year writing program and enrich our graduate concentration in rhetoric and composition as well as our undergraduate majors.

Birmingham-Southern College (AL) - TT Assistant Professor of English, Director of Writing

The English Department at Birmingham-Southern College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in writing at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin August 2015.

The Director of Writing will manage the campus writing center, teach five courses per year, and provide leadership for the department’s composition program. Teaching schedule is 2-1-2, and will include the first-year Seminar in Critical Thinking and Writing, Intermediate Writing, and upper-level courses. Other duties will include supervising adjunct writing faculty, participating in assessment of student learning outcomes, and serving as a resource for the college’s writing reinforcement initiative.

A strong background in composition and rhetoric is required, and experience with writing center administration is preferred. Additional areas of expertise might include, but are not limited to, new media (digital rhetoric, visual rhetoric), disciplinary specialties (such as science writing or business writing), or composition pedagogy (WAC/WID). Commitment to undergraduate teaching and research in the liberal arts tradition is essential.

The English Department at California State University, San Bernardino announces a tenure-track Assistant Professor position that begins September 2015. Typical Activities: The successful candidate will join an active community of teacher/scholars and teach undergraduate and graduate composition and writing studies courses. Normal teaching load is three courses per quarter.

Responsibilities include training of both graduate and undergraduate student tutors, supervising an assistant director, leading Studio assessment activities, overseeing tutor scheduling, developing online and print resources for faculty and students, and leading campus workshops related to student writing. The Director will also contribute to strategic planning for the future development of the Studio, collaborate with Duke faculty on curricular initiatives supporting writing across Duke, and sit on college and university committees as appropriate. The Director will teach one course per semester—including Writing 101 and courses related to writing pedagogy. This individual will join a team of four other Assistant and Associate Professors of the Practice and a faculty of 27 post-doctoral teaching fellows.

As the Rowan University Writing Center Director, the successful candidate will receive reassigned time to perform the following:
• Provide leadership in generating and executing a vision for the Writing Center.
• Promote activities conducive to the creation of a community of writers across and beyond the campus.
• Serve as a liaison for the Writing Center, coordinating its activities with the Department of Writing Arts and other stakeholders.

• Hire, train, and manage all peer writing consultants and student workers.

In addition, the successful candidate will be asked to contribute to the department and university through service including curriculum development and academic and career advisement of students.

The successful candidate will join a thriving department with nearly 350 majors, minors, and students in affiliated programs. Our faculty pursue diverse scholarly and creative agendas and publish in national and international forums. Located in the College of Communication and Creative Arts, we are one of the few standalone writing departments in the nation.

The successful candidate will possess a Ph.D. in composition/rhetoric or related discipline with Writing Center experience, and coursework in digital literacies/New Media writing. Preference will be given to those candidates who demonstrate excellence in teaching college writing for at least three years. In addition, experience teaching writing at a diverse public university is a plus. ABD candidates with dissertation nearing completion will be considered. Communication Arts: Communication Arts is a two-semester sequence in Samford's interdisciplinary core curriculum, which also includes Cultural Perspectives, Biblical Perspectives and Concepts of Fitness and Health. The core serves as the foundational experience for all undergraduates and has been given positive reviews from representatives of the NCA and NN-WAC. Approximately 80 sections of Communication Arts 101 and 102 are offered each year, with 16-18 students per class. The courses emphasize learning outcomes in both writing and speaking for first-year students.

Brief Description of Duties/Responsibilities: Teaching assignments will include professional writing courses within the English major as well as courses in first-year composition and general education. Tenure-track faculty at SCSU are expected to conduct creative activity/research in their area of expertise. Requirements: • Ph.D. or MFA from a university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or an internationally recognized accrediting agency. (ABD or M.A. will be considered with appropriate teaching experience.) • Experience teaching college-level writing. Preference given to candidates with experience teaching in first-year writing programs. • Interest in writing program development, evaluation, and assessment. Experience and interest in writing-related research preferred. Interest in and experience with second-language writing instruction a plus. • Ability to work with a culturally diverse student population.

Washington College seeks applications for the position of Assistant Director of its Writing Center. This is a full-time, 10-month exempt staff position. Regular hours are Monday-Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm, with occasional responsibilities on evenings and weekends. The Washington College Writing Center has a 30-year history of supporting the college's writing program and providing individualized instruction in writing to students across the curriculum.
Responsibilities: The Assistant Director reports to the Director of the Writing Center.
