Bard College at Simon’s Rock invites applications for a regular, full-time literature position, beginning Fall 2016, specializing in Renaissance/early modern British literature.

Requirements include Ph.D. by time of appointment. The successful candidate will teach courses in Renaissance and early modern British literature (including Shakespeare) at the undergraduate introductory through advanced levels, as well as courses outside the early modern period. The position also requires teaching in the interdisciplinary, writing-intensive general education seminar sequence, and serving as an academic advisor and senior thesis advisor to undergraduates. Applicants must demonstrate excellence in teaching and commitment to professional development.

We are particularly interested in candidates who bring global and transnational approaches to their teaching and scholarship, and who engage with issues of race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, literary theory, intellectual history, or performance studies. Particularly important is the ability to develop courses that attract students from a variety of disciplines, including literature, philosophy, theater, and history, and experience in working with a diverse student population.

Bard College at Simon's Rock is the only four-year college in the US specifically designed to allow bright, highly motivated adolescents to begin college immediately after the tenth or eleventh grade. Full-time faculty course load is 3/3 and the student-faculty ratio is below 9:1. The College has recently launched a new program, Bard Academy; interest and ability to teach in this program is desirable.

• Does anyone have any info on whether this is a real search? I've got my ear to the ground for jobs and I heard of this only through a fluke. It all seems very suspicious: it's barely been advertised and the lead time between the initial posting and the September review of applications makes it seem like they must have an identified or inside candidate they are trying to hire quickly under the radar while doing the bare legal minimum of running a search. It'd be nice to know before putting in the effort of applying, but I guess that's the position job candidates are always in!
• ^^They did run a VAP search ("Scholar-in-Residence") for an Early Modernist last Spring, so they could be happy with their hire.
• Seconding the likehood of an inside candidate. It's a very early date without a hard deadline and with little application material needed. Smells a bit strange. It might well be that they're doing the minimum needed legally before they make a hire. At least they're not asking for large volumes of customized documents. 
• This is obviously a fake search--no serious place would do a national or even local search for a TT position with such little adevrtising and odd timeline. Of course this happens all the time but it is rarely so brazen. I suppose we should be grateful that they are not getting our hopes up? In any case, anyone qualified should apply nonethelesss--at least make it hard for them. And you never know whether the administration of the college is also in on the fix. If not, and if they take any oversight of the process, the more applications that come in, the better the chance someone outside the dept. will spot a good candidate and maybe start asking questions about why certain appications are not being considered and force a real competition. I wonder if there is some way to alert someone in  provost office or something without seeming too paranoid? Small chance, but maybe could help make it all more fair and legit. Otherwise, I guess we just hope the inside person is some long-suffering adjunct they've been exploiting for years? a happy ending for a deserving soul at least.
• ^^ Calm down with the hysteria. This is not "obviously" a fake search. (Even when there *is* an inside candidate he or she is frequently bested by an outside candidate--I've seen it happen many times.) I agree that the early review is odd, but it doesn't necessarily mean anything other than that the committee will be looking at applications as they arrive. Regardless, though, the department is not operating freelance here, and if something is up, admin knows it. +1

The English Department at Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of English beginning July 2016.

The ideal candidate will be a generalist with strength in British literature before 1800.  Applicants are sought who have the ability to teach speculative fiction, Medieval literature, and/or 17th and 18th century British literature.  The successful candidate will be a strong teacher and scholar who can offer courses at all levels, including writing-intensive courses, in a variety of literary periods.  Candidates should include other areas of interest in their applications.  Teaching load is six courses per year.  Other duties include advising students, conducting independent studies, supervising students doing honors thesis work, participating in department and university service, and ongoing scholarly activity in the form of publications and presentations.

University of Wisconsin- Green Bay (WI) - TT Assistant Professor - English (British Literature, pref. Renaissance / Early Modern)

The department of Humanistic Studies at the University of Wisconsin - Green Bay seeks applicants for a tenure-track position. This position will teach a broad array of undergraduate English and Humanities courses at all levels including advanced courses in English literature.

Preferred area of specialization is Renaissance/Early Modern British literature. However applicants with other areas of interest including world literature, general British literature, creative nonfiction, and editing and publishing are strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants with experience in digital humanities and new media projects as well as digital pedagogy are also strongly encouraged to apply.

This position includes the following responsibilities: Teach courses in the following topic areas:

Shakespeare

Upper- and lower-level English literature courses

Interdisciplinary courses in the Humanities

Advise students

Perform scholarly activities consistent with rank

Perform institutional service and contribute to the ongoing development of the department

In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to display a demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching and scholarship, a successful research agenda, and a commitment to undergraduate education. Additionally, they should possess communication and interpersonal skills sufficient to work effectively with a diverse array of students and colleagues.

Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications: Earned doctorate in English, or closely related field from an accredited institution. ABD candidates will be considered, however an earned doctorate in English, or closely related field from an accredited institution is a necessary condition for contract renewal.

Starting Date: August 22, 2016

Conditions of Appointment: Position is an academic year tenure-track appointment. Applicants must be considered for tenure and promotion in six years although tenure decisions may be at any time. Promotion from Assistant to Associate Professor is simultaneous with tenure. Excellence in teaching, sustained scholarly activity and institutional service required for retention and promotion. Official transcripts of the highest degree achieved will be required of finalist(s). A criminal conviction investigation will be conducted on the finalist(s).
