Agnes Scott College - transnational feminism - OFFER MADE & ACCEPTED[]

  • The Agnes Scott College Women's Studies Program invites applications for a tenure-track position in transnational feminism to begin fall 2012. Ph.D. in Women's Studies preferred, but candidates with a graduate certificate (or equivalent) in Women's Studies and a Ph.D. in a related field also are invited to apply. The teaching load is 3/2, including courses in transnational feminism, feminist research methods, and, possibly, service-learning/internship. The successful candidate will possess the ability to teach a socially and economically diverse student population and a commitment to both scholarship and service. Please submit current CV, three recent letters of recommendation and a cover letter incorporating brief statements of research agenda and teaching philosophy to: Prof. Elizabeth Hackett, Agnes Scott College, 141 E. College Ave., Decatur, GA 30030. Electronic submissions via wssearch@agnesscott.edu are encouraged.
  • Review of applications will begin on Oct. 10, 2011 and the search committee will conduct interviews at the November 2011 National Women's Studies Association Conference in Atlanta. Note that it is not necessary for applicants to attend this conference to be considered for the position. A writing sample and teaching evaluations will be solicited from selected applicants later in the hiring process.
    • Inquiry from search committee chair on which applicant will attend the NWSA conference. I wonder if "everyone" gets this email? Just wondering...
    • I got one (6)
  • Did the folks that received inquiries about NWSA attendance indicate that that they would be available to interview at NWSA in their letters?
    • I got an inquiry, and I did not indicate if I was going to NWSA in my job letter. I would be interested to hear how others responded. I said that I would be attending NWSA if I have interviews (hopefully that was ok to say). Since I am now only adjuncting, I don't have any conference funds, which makes possibly having to go to NWSA and MLA very very difficult.
    • Hi, it is nice to see that people in this field are bonding together to share info. Ok, I didn't state that I was attending precisely for the same reason of not knowing if I will get any interview. So in my email reply, I say that I would be happy to do interviews over skype, phone as stated in the email. I probably "may" attend NWSA if I get another request for interview. So it seems like a selected 10 or few people are asked about whether they will attend or not?
    • Maybe everyone was asked? Alot of people don't check this wiki.
    • I got the same email and replied similarly to those above. I stated that I was waiting to hear back from a few schools before confirming my conference attendance. I also stated that I wanted to make my plans definite soon and inquired as to when I might hear back about an interview or not. The response I got back was friendy and stated that last week was fall break and that most likely candidates would hear back about interviews mid to end of this week.
  • Has anyone heard yet?
  • nothing
  • NWSA interview [posted 10/28, X4]
  • I applied late and was told all the NWSA interviews had been scheduled but that the preliminary process will continue with skype and phone interviews for long listed candidates.
  • Request for additional materials (11/14)
  • Does anyone know the timeline for this search? When were they supposed to make a short list? [posted 11/29}
  • They are still doing skype interviews, this week (12/05)
  • any sense of the timeline for the short list?
  • they said sometime at the end of December (12/12)
  • Anyone hear anything yet? (12/19)
  • Rejection e-mail (12/20) x5
  • Were these rejections even after preliminary interview? (12/21)
  • any news about on campus visits?
    • No news here yet, and I had a skype interview (12/21)
    • any news about campus visits? (1/3/12) Nope (1/3)
  • I had a NWSA interview and just recieved the following email that I presume was sent to all interviewees: "I am writing to update you about the search for a scholar of Transnational Feminism at Agnes Scott College. As often is the case with such endeavors, circumstances have conspired to scuttle our original calendar. We definitely are proceeding with the search and remain very interested in your candidacy. We are in the process of determining which of the many strong applicants will be invited to campus and will be in touch as soon as possible about next steps. " (1/4) X
  • any news on this job? Any job talks scheduled?? A: I haven't heard anything (1/18).
  • Is this search still on? (2/3)
  • Rejection email 2/6 stating they had approximately 125 applicants, interviewed 23 of the strongest and selected three for campus interviews.
    • Just a comment on the unevenness of the whole process across institutions: 23 interviews?? Wow! There are R-1 institutions that just bring out candidates without the preliminaries. I find this really interesting. I think it's pretty cool that Agnes Scott interviewed so many people, it must have been incredibly time consuming.
    • time consuming ... and potentially indicative of big splits within the program about what was desired.
  • Has anyone heard anything? (4/3)

Indiana University - Assistant Professor in Gender and Science - OFFER MADE & ACCEPTED[]

  • The Department of Gender Studies at Indiana University Bloomington seeks to make an appointment at the assistant professor rank in the area of gender and science beginning in the 2012-13 academic year. We invite applications from scholars whose work demonstrates a serious commitment to bridging intellectual and methodological divides between the natural, physical, behavioral or social sciences and the humanities. Our department is committed to research and teaching that pushes the boundaries of existing knowledge about gender and/or sexuality in discernibly feminist and/or queer ways. We are equally committed to supporting scholarship and teaching that engages creatively with related issues such as race and racialization, ethnicity, class and socio-economic inequality, bodies and embodiment, health or medicine. We are looking for a faculty member who can help us teach a new generation of undergraduates and graduate students how to think differently about what the sciences can teach the interdisciplinary field of gender studies, and what gender studies can teach the sciences.
  • We are seeking applicants with a broad range of backgrounds such as: scholars in gender/women’s studies with graduate certificates (or equivalents) in science, scientists with graduate certificates (or equivalents) in gender/women studies; as well as historians, philosophers, theorists of science, or others with similar interdisciplinary education. Areas of specialization may include, but are not limited to: biology, physiology and/or morphology; evolution and/or cross-species or cross-cultural comparisons; behavior and/or socialization; sexual science; health or medicine; society and cultures; embodiment; dis/ability; transgender; and sustainability and the environment.
  • More on our programs, faculty, and current graduate students can be found at http://www.indiana.edu/~gender/ .
  • Salary, fringe benefits, research and teaching opportunities are consistent with peer Research One institutions. Completed applications received by October 31st will be assured full consideration. Must have a PhD in hand no later than August 1st, 2012. To apply, submit: 1) a letter of application detailing how your research agenda, teaching experience, and philosophy fit with job description and department; 2) curriculum vitae; and 3) name/contact information for three referees via e-mail to kbrand@indiana.edu or hard copy to: Kristin Brand, Administrator, Department of Gender Studies, Memorial Hall E 130, Indiana University, Bloomington, IN 47405
  • NOTES: Curious if anyone's had contact of any kind on this search yet? (I haven't). Me neither. (x3)
  • one of my references got a letter request (11.29) (x3)
  • received voluntary "Applicant Monitoring Form" to email to Afirm Act office (12/4) (x4) - did everyone get this? I don't think any of my references got a letter request, but I got this form.
  • re the "applicant monitoring form": i'm wondering if anyone has any thoughts (for this or other jobs) about whether it's bad or not to just not fill it out? as a trans person i always get uncomfortable with either/or male female boxes, but i don't really want to out myself as trans through this kind of form...
    • I once had a job compiling the data from these forms; basically the department uses it as proof that they are following the AA/EOE rules as much as possible, and to demonstrate that they didn't, for example, only interview white candidates even though the pool of applicants was mostly non-white. It really does help the university if people fill them out, but most people don't (I think we got less than 30%.) The problem is that not everyone fits the boxes: usually the categories on the form are determined by some mix of state law and the school governing body. I asked the HR office about this and I was basically told that they had all the categories they needed. So that's a long winded way of saying - the people who are collecting data ask about what they are concerned about, they generally are out of touch, and even if you are sending the search form directly to the department it's probably being compiled by someone who is going to just send it to the external HR people who, once again, just don't care. So... part of me says, fill it out and make the HR people actually think about the ridiculousness of their categories, but really, the answer is you can just ignore it. Most people do.
    • It was my impression that the forms are anonymous and don't have your name on it. I would say fill it out, cross out and modify the categories and show HR how diverse or non-diverse the applicant pool is.
  • Last year, Indiana U ran a search for the Peg Zeglin Brand Chair at the advanced assistant/associate level. Any idea what happened to this search? (The old job ad is here: https://www.h-net.org/jobs/job_display.php?id=41262)
    • That was a failed search.
  • Got request for recommendations, but haven't heard anything. Anyone get an invite for preliminary interview yet?
  • no word yet. (x5)
  • IU-Bloomington is in the process of setting up Skype interviews for this position via email contact.
  • how many skype interviews have been scheduled?
  • There are six Skype interviews scheduled for early this week (12/19).
  • IU insiders: can you offer an update on the status of this search?
  • Campus visits have been scheduled.
  • An offer has been made and accepted. (2/14)

Information: Maria Bevacqua, Search Chair, Department of Gender & Women's Studies, Minnesota State University Mankato.

--> This was the most cumbersome online application I have ever filled out. As a heads up, the online application includes a request for a diversity statement which is sent to the search committee: "Please provide information on how you value and can contribute to the diversity of our campus."

-->This was a cumbersome application, and I put a lot of time and effort into it, only to have my application rejected by an "Unclassified Staffing Specialist" in Human Resources, stating that I did not meet the minimum qualifications for the job. I am wondering if this is because I have a Ph.D. in English, with a certificate in Women's and Gender Studies, rather than a Ph.D. in WGS. I have eight years experience as a faculty member in a women's and gender studies program, and so thought I might be a good fit for this job. I understand how flooded the market is with jobseekers, and that the chances of actually landing this job were slim, but to not even have my application read by the department is incredibly disheartening. Anyone else have this happen?

--->I had the same thing happen to me. I have a PhD in English and graduate certificate in Women's Studies with a lot of Women's Studies teaching experience. I e-mailed HR and was told I could resubmit my application if I thought I had the minimium requirements. I just resubmitted my application (all you have to do is: go back to the posting, hit apply, and re-fill out the questions and just hit "yes" to the question if you have a PhD in Women's Studies). I figure the search committee can make the decision of if they consider a PhD in English and a Graduate Certificate in Women's Studies a suitable substitution or not.

--> As the holder of a PhD in Women's Studies with a concentration in literature, I am going to assume that the two above posters would have no issue with me applying for and assuming that I would be given serious consideration for a job in an English department, even if the job clearly said they wanted an English PhD.

  • Totally agree with poster directly above. I totally appreciate WS jobs actually requiring a PhD in WS. Those of us with PhDs in WS are NOT considered for jobs in disciplines - like English, Sociology, Political Science, IR, Geography, etc, etc. WS is an INTERdisciplinary field, and WS programs must start prioritizing those of us with PhDs in WS or we just end up without jobs. Period. My 2c.
    • From one of the two above -- I have graduate degrees in both English and WGS and had a VAP in WGS. Really, I think what it all comes down to is fit and what the search committee really wants in terms of scholarly research and teaching interests/experience. We all have to apply for jobs interdisciplinarily when our work is such. And for those of us who do queer studies, it isn't often that job ads specifically ask for someone doing LGBTQ studies.

-For those who received an immediate rejection, what did the email state? I clicked "yes" for PhD in WST, although my degree is in interdisciplinary studies with an emphasis in queer and gender studies and did not get a rejection e-mail.

  • I know that the search committee is only considering applicants with PhDs in Women's Studies, so I'm sure that that's the reason that some people's applications were rejected.
    • I'm the op, and I'm not going to resubmit my application for the job, based on the info here. Thanks for all for being forthcoming and sharing info. Best of luck to all of you. And to the poster with a PhD in WS with a lit. concentration, YES! I would be thrilled if you applied for a job in an English department, and if I had any kind of power I would give your application serious consideration. That's a rockin' combination, in a field weighted more and more towards the social sciences. I wish you extra good luck!
  • Just to complicate matters... I have a certificate but not a PhD in WS and was not instantly rejected. Perhaps the issue is not so much the WS PhD but the fields they're interested in (i.e. not English).
    • Just to clarify: Did you say "No" to the question of "Do you have a Ph.D. in Women's/Gender Studies?" and still *not* get the rejection from Human Resources?
    • Aha. I see now. I must have clicked Yes.
  • I contacted the department on Friday and heard today (Monday) that the search committee is meeting in 3 weeks to come up with a short list (1/30).
  • Request for letters of rec and a phone interview (2/8) x1.
  • Invitation for campus visit (2/22) x1
  • When was offer accepted?

  • Also posted at Humanities and Social Sciences Postdocs 2011-12
  • Request for phone interview (5/24). x4
  • Just completed the initial phone interview. Was told they would likely have a list of candidates to invite to campus by the endof next week. x2
  • 6.7 Any news? I was interviewed last week and haven't heard anything.
  • 6.8 Request for Skype interview, scheduled for the 20th or 21st.------>Anyone else get a Skype request?
  • I interviewed as well. I emailed them to tell them I had another offer and they responded saying I was not invited for a campus visit. So, they have a shortlist or I was just not on it! Good luck to everyone.
  • 6.18 This seems confusing--are they doing Skype interviews, or flyouts, or both? Anyone get a flyout offer yet?

    • This Department has a dissertation fellow whose work would fit into the job description. I hope this is not another "internal candidate" case. I had my share of those in the last cycle. (see the announcement about the diss fellow on the department's website: http://womensstudies.okstate.edu/index.php/gws-faculty). Good luck!
    • My guess is they need someone to fill the space left by Carol Mason who has moved on U of Kentucky.
  • Received a request for additional materials (writing sample + two syllabi on topics of the department's choosing 10/12)
  • NWSA conference interview scheduled (10/26)
  • Interview scheduled (Is this an on-campus interview?)
  • Has anyone who had a telephone/NWSA/Skype interview for this position been contacted yet for a campus visit? Not me.
  • Campus visits scheduled.
  • Hmmm.... I think this one's actually still a bit "in process" for scheduling campus visits.

  • Offer made and accepted (2/16)

Oregon State University - Queer Studies, Assistant Professor - OFFER MADE[]

  • The School of Language, Culture, and Society at Oregon State University invites applicants for a full-time (1.0 FTE), 9-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor Position in Queer Studies. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. Required qualifications include: Ph.D. in open discipline, with a specialization in queer and/or LGBTQI studies, or emphasis on global/transnational sexualities. A demonstrated record of working with diverse students and faculty, particularly LGBTQ students, and a demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity are required.
  • To review posting and apply, go to http://oregonstate.edu/jobs. Apply to posting #0008167. Closing date is November 7, 2011. OSU is an AA/EOE.
    • Yay for Queer Studies job! This doesn't happen a lot yet it happened last year and this year again :)
    • Yes, good for them!
    • Does anyone know the teaching load at Oregon State?
    • when I interviewed with them for a job last year it was 2/2/1 (they're on quarters). -R: Thank you so much for this info!
    • Received an email to schedule a "preliminary meeting" at NWSA (10/31)
    • NWSA interview (very personable email) request (10/31)
    • So . . . does this mean those of us who submitted our materials after Halloween are out of luck? I kind of assumed the closing date of November 7th meant November 7th.
  • In response to this, my interview was scheduled after the 31st, and I might be confused but I understood those interviewed to be on the long short-list. This doesn't mean that others on the long short-list won't get phone or skype interviews.
  • I assume those of us who were invited to interview at NWSA before the closing date were "stronger" applicants who applied before the Nov. 7 deadline. That doesn't mean those who submitted by the 7th are out of luck or even that those who did not interview at NWSA are out of luck. The interviews were really informational meetings where most of the time was dedicated to the candidate asking questions about the dept/program. And, their timeline is to bring people out for real interviews in January/early Feb and make an offer by March.
  • Definitely does not mean those who applied after the 31st are out of luck. They said these were really just preliminary meetings (with NWSA timing right after the closing date). And yes, the meetings were more informational, with lots of time for candidate to ask questions.
  • (12/1/11) Has anyone heard anything since NWSA, whether you interviewed there or not?
    • Was interviewed at NWSA and haven't heard anything (12/1/11) Me too, or rather, me neither (12/2x2).
      • Hopefully there will be news before winter break ...
      • Has anyone else heard anything? I haven't heard any news yet (12/20 x5)
      • Nothing here (12/22 x2). nope (12/28 X2)
      • Any news on this position yet? Is the search still on? (12/30) I haven't heard anything (1/3 x2) Nor I. (1/8 X2) Nada (1/9)
      • I wrote to the department manager for an update, and she said that she'd check and get back to me - so that sounds like either deep cover, or they haven't started anything (like campus visits) that would require her involvement. (1/12) Thank you so much for posting this! Would love to hear what answer you get from her.
      • Received request for phone interview (1/12) x4
      • Q: Did those of you with phone interviews also meet with the department at NWSA?
      • No, I was not at NWSA, and I received a phone interview. - me too- same situation x3
      • Campus invite via phone (1/19) [That was fast! Congrats] <---Congrats, but for those of us interviewed early November, this was an incredibly slow search. (This sounds suspect given the below dates that phone interviews happened on 1/19).
      • To clarify to the above poster (in bold): I had a phone interview on Thurs morning, and they called me Thurs afternoon to schedule a campus visit. I did not attend NWSA this year. (1/20)
      • For those of us not interviewed at NWSA in November, the phone interviews just happened this week - Tues, Weds, and Thurs. (1/20)
      • Did anyone else who interviewed hear back about a campus visit? (1/31)
      • Yep, Campus interviews are on. I believe I'm the first candidate on campus. Will do the interview tomorrow and Thursday (1/31)
      • Rejection email (3/15)
      • Offer made early/mid-March (3/18)

    Professor Lisa Diedrich Chair,

Department of Cultural Analysis and Theory
    Humanities Building, Room 2048
    Stony Brook University
    Stony Brook, NY 11794-5355
  • Applications for this position must be received, as specified in the Application Procedure Section, no later than 5:00 PM Eastern Time on 12/30/2011, unless specifically noted otherwise in the Special Notes Section.
  • Question: The application asks for all documents to be combined into a giant PDF, but Academic Jobs Online requested four separate documents. I solved this by submitting the giant PDF for my job letter, and then submitting the other three componenets seperately as well. Did anyone else have a similar experience?
    • I just uploaded things separately. I had trouble with stupid AcademicJobsOnline (rrrr--loathe that monster) when applying to something else two days ago, and concerned I'd somehow deleted part of my application, I wrote to them to confirm that my application was received and was told it was--no comment about not having done it as a single PDF or anything, so I assume you're fine either way.
  • I do not effs with AJO--so awful. Grateful Stony Brook let us snail mail. I got no less than 10 emails from AJO asking for me to fill out the application because I made the mistakeof checking something on their "site." Oi! <--- I postal mailed as well (including cover sheet), but just got an email yesterday (1/9) saying the electronic app was required, too. "Your application will NOT be processed until you've filled out the electronic cover sheet AND submitted the online appliation for jobs you're applying for." Considering the email was yesterday, and writing sample requests were as well, I hope this didn't omit me from consideration.
  • I had the same problem, so I submitted the entire combined pdf under each document heading, then notified the contact person that I had done so. Seems to have worked. Was TOTALLY annoying and the whole process took hours.
  • Request for additional writing sample in pdf format--must be submitted within 48 hours. (01/09/11 x7)
  • Hmmm...I find the above "request for additional writing sample" a bit strange. I just got a generic reply confirming receipt of my application today, advising that the committee sould soon be meeting to make the short list, and that if I were on it, I would be notified immediately. There was no request for a writing sample. The initial CFA did not include a request for a writing sample, so something seems off here. Can any of the 6 people who received requests for additional writing samples please clarify? Were you actually asked to send an article or book chapter? Or were you missing some aspect of your application? Thanks. (01/11) x2: I too would appreciate further clarity here. <--- I also received generic reply today of receipt of application, which had an AfirmAct survey. Perhaps Admin is late in sending out the AfirAct requests, and this email is largely separate in function from the search? If so, then they need to coordinate these timetables. <---- It hardly seems surprising that these timetables would be off. Nothing about the way searches are run is logical. The whole system sucks for staff and faculty and, more so (I would argue) for applicants.
  • I am one of the 6 above and was asked to send an article or chapter; it was not a missing part of the original application (you're right, nothing was requested with the original CFA). I don't think anything is off. But, based on what I've seen/heard of other searches, I wouldn't necessarily assume that if you haven't been asked for a writing sample you won't make the short list. (I'm another one of the six. Ditto to everything in this bullet point. (1/11))
  • I received both the request for writing sample & then the AffAct Survey form request today 1/11. The email addresses for the two emails are different, and I think everyone should have gotten the survey request. The writing sample is a request for additional materials from the committee - though it probably doesn't mean one is completely out of the running.
  • One of the 6 who got request for article-length writing sample (1/9) and also the application info form today (1/11). Since the request specifies a 48 hours window period, it seems that they are trying to meet their deadline specifically stated in the application that they want to do skype or phone interviews by January and then campus visit for February. I sent in an article instead of a diss chapter just cos diss chapter is just way too long...at least for mine. I hope they are still requesting more materials from other candidates. More people need to be recognized for the excellent work that they do!
  • (1/12) I am also one of the six that was asked for a writing sample, article length. I got this request AND a general response/request to fill out the employment survey from separate email addresses. I don't think anything seems unusual here, just that they've likely narrowed the initial field and are considering who they're going to interview. Given that they are requesting additional writing samples from other people AFTER the 48 hour window they gave me, I'd assume that they are moving through a list of potential interviewees and requesting additional materials as they narrow the pool. If you haven't gotten a request yet, I wouldn't assume that this means you are out of the running.
  • Any news?
  • Request for skype interview via e-mail (1/19) (x3)
  • Hello! I just finished my skype interview and realize I forgot to ask their timeline. Did anyone ask for when they hope to have decisions, re: campus visit? They were all very nice! Good luck to everyone...
  • Campus invitation for early feb (1/30). (congrats! can i ask how you heard--email or phone?) (also, did you interview thursday or today?)
  • Thank you. They called me yesterday afternoon. I interviewed yesterday AM. Good luck
  • Rejection by email (2/6)X2
  • Has anyone who Skype interviewed last week received a rejection? I had a skype interview, and I have not received any word. I take you had the interview as well and have not received a "no longer considered" email (2/7).
  • Yes, I interviewed last week - but I just received a very nice rejection email this afternoon. Bummer. Good luck to the finalists!
  • I did an on campus interview. Did any of the other candidates get a clear timeline from them regarding their decision making process? I know that they were moving quickly and am wondering if anyone has been notified either way. Thanks and good luck!!! (2/25)
  • Has anyone heard on this one? Ah.... The anguish of the WAIT! Have they made an offer on the other position in the dept. or this one??? (3/15)
  • Any news??? (4/10)

    • They were hiring in this exact area in 2010, the text of the job call is identical with the exception of the contact information
    • Q: Does anyone know the outcome of the 2010 search? Did they hire someone? If not, was it a failed search? Cancelled or frozen at a higher level? (A: I think campus interviews were scheduled but the search was put on hold because of suspended funding.)
    • I entered all of my information and uploaded my attachments, but I didn't get any kind of final confirmation and my stuff is all still listed on the home page of the online system. Is this the way it is for everyone else, too?
      • The above (re: no confirmation) happened to me too. So I "submitted" again. Next thing I know when I checked my email I had two emails saying that I had submitted to the job. I hope the search committee doesn't think I'm an idiot for submitting twice... (+1 --I logged in to check on my submission and saw the "Start" link next to the application; went through to submit it again.)
    • 11/6: Heard from one of my references that the committee had requested a rec letter. (x2)
      • To the person who got the LOR request on 11/6, did you apply particularly early? I'm just wondering what the approximate turn-around time was between submission and first sign of interest.
      • I did apply fairly early and got a prompt response.
    • 11/28: Request for letters of recommendation (x2)
    • 11/26: Request for recs--but only two, not three, for some reason.
  • Any news/timeline on this one?

    • Request for skype interview via phone/e-mail. There were over 400 applicants for the position, according to the search chair. Eeks. 12/12 (x2).
    • (12/13) Mass but nice rejection email: "The search committee ... has now selected its list of finalists from over 400 applicants for the position. We were deeply impressed by the scholarship and accomplishments of the applicants. However, considerations of departmental need governed our difficult choice of finalists, and we are sorry to have to tell you that you are not among that list. We are grateful for the opportunity of reviewing your scholarship, and we send you all best wishes for the holidays and for your future career."
      • Yes, "nice" email, addressed to DATE, LASTNAME, FIRSTNAME.
    • Received email rejection today (12/13) :"The search committee for the Assistant Professorship in Gender and Women's Studies, with a focus on Gender, Sexuality, and Popular Culture, at the University of Illinois at Chicago, has now selected its list of finalists from over 400 applicants for the position. We were deeply impressed by the scholarship and accomplishments of the applicants. • I received an official email rejection for this position today. <--- Anyone else? seems strange for rejections not to arrive en masse
      • What date did your rejection arrive? Mine hasn't come as of 12/19, but it will no doubt arrive very soon, perhaps even in time for the holidays. (Ah, the joyful optimism of a job seeker!)
      • No news as of 12/23. Can someone confirm that candidates have been contacted? (x2)
      • Any updates on this? Have the finalists been contacted?
      • I called the dept and was told that finalists have been chosen, but not contacted, because the search has to be processed through a large, slow system before they can proceed. (1/12)
      • Has anyone been contacted AT ALL?
      • They have contacted finalists for campus visits. (1/28)
      • (2/7/12) First campus visit has been announced
      • (3/24, 4/30) Rejection letter.

Wellesley College - assistant professor, Global Sexuality and Queer Studies -- POSITION FILLED[]

The Women's and Gender Studies Department at Wellesley College invites applications for a tenure-track, beginning assistant professor position in Global Sexuality and Queer Studies to start Fall 2012. We seek a social scientist (or training in a related field) whose research and teaching utilizes qualitative or quantitative methods. The successful candidate will teach a 2/2 load that includes introduction to women's and gender studies, queer theory, and cross-cultural sexuality, in addition to courses in new faculty member's specific area. Deadline Sep 15.

  • Has anyone recieved a confirmation of receipt or an affirmative action survey? (No. Nothing. 10/4; Nothing 10/10)
  • Why the very early deadline? (Schools generally have early deadlines when they want to hire someone before the end of fall semester/quarter.)
  • They have scheduled interviews. (If they have it's not on the campus calendar where they have talks scheduled in other depts. I question the accuracy of this info).
    • I assume the first round would be phone/skype interviews, which probably wouldn't be posted on a calendar (as campus visits would). Can the original poster clarify, assuming this is legit information?
    • They have scheduled in-person interviews.
    • There must be an internal candidate then. yes? (10/17) Why?
      • There are two visiting lecturers that match the job ad, so I wouldn't be surprised if at least one was a front runner.
      • Are job talks advertised anywhere? Is this another "advanced beginning" position?
      • Any updates on this search? (11/14)
      • They brought 4 candidates in for campus visits. I do not know if they've made an offer to anyone yet. (11/14)
  • Email rejection saying that there were 175+ applicants. (11/30) x2
    • Ditto. Does this seem like an unusually high number of applications in the advertised area of global sexuality/queer studies?
      • Yes, I'm surprised by the number, considering that it is a specialized focus but also that it was limited to social sciences and beginning assistants. I suppose I'm shaking my head at the picture of 175 global queer theorists currently searching for a job.
      • That's actually a funny image - I suppose 174 of us are now waiting with bated breath to hear back from Williams!
    • Apparently, they hired a social scientist. (Q: Did the email say they actually hired a social scientist? I didn't apply because the ad said they wanted a social scientist, but I'll kick myself for not applying if they picked someone from the humanities--not that I would've been competitive.)
    • Here's the rejection e-mail: "Dear Candidate for the Women's and Gender Studies Position at Wellesley College: On behalf of the search committee of the Women's and Gender Studies Department I would like to thank you for your application for our position for a social scientist whose work was in cross cultural and global sexuality and queer theory. As you must have imagined given the time since September 15th when we closed the applications, our department has now hired in this position. I am sorry my email to you does not have more positive news. We had over 175 applications and had to really hone in on exactly what our department needed in terms of our curriculum and that of the college as a whole. We appreciate that you took the time to consider us, and we were very impressed with everything you have accomplished in your career. We wish you all the best as you go forward. Susan M. Reverby, Chair, Women's and Gender Studies, Wellesley College"
  • QU: Has anyone *not* received the rejection email? I know I wasn't on their list of consideration, but haven't received the above email or any kind of notice. A: Maybe you're on their short list, in case the offer falls through? OP here: Ha, that would be lovely :-), but since they've already had campus visits and I wasn't amongst those candidates, I don't think that's why. (12/2) Ah, just got a rejection by mail. Not sure why snail rather than email, but the text was the same (including the bit about "my email to you") x2 (on 12/5).

    • Hurray!!!! There's still hope! What an evil little game this all is.
    • 1/18 anyone heard anything?
    • 1/22 haven't heard anything new, but regarding hiring criteria: I was told that high on their list was someone who would contribute to the Sexuality Studies Program.
    • 1/26. Ugh. The wait. x67 [something must be up]
    • 1/ 29 I spoke with a faculty member there (in wgs but not on search committee). she told me they are just slow with everything at York. She is trying to contact the chair to see what is going on, and if there is an anticipated timeline for the search....[1/30: Thanks for this! x3 -- and please keep us posted!]
    • 1/30 - I emailed the department and was informed that they were not able to consider my application because I was still ABD at the time I applied. In the email I received it states,"we are abiding by the job advertisement that stipulates that all candidates must have a PhD in hand by November 15th, 2011." My impression was that the requirement of a Ph.D. was to be met by the time of the appointment and evidently that is not the case.
    • 2/2 - Dude x3
    • 2/3 - Heard back from the chair of the committee that the "Search is still in process."
      • Was there any further info offered - like timelines, or cause of delay? (2/4) - Nada. Just a salutation, that sentence, and a sign-off.
    • 2/4 - not that it was important, but someone deleted my response to the above post yesterday.
    • 2/10 - Seriously? Three months? Sigh. Did the poster who spoke with the WGS faculty member ever hear back?
    • 2/12 - Apparently a slow process is pretty typical for York. I guess no news is still good news...
    • It certainly doesn't put York in a good position to get the top candidates! (2/12)
    • 2/13 - In this market there are so many top candidates not getting jobs that York could wait to make a short list until April and still get someone fabulous (and it kinda looks like that's what they're aiming for!) x2
    • 2/15 - it really sucks to be on this end of it.
    • 2/15 - It looks like next week is "reading week" at York which means that if they don't send out the short list today or tomorrow we are likely looking at radio-silence until March.
    • 2/16- campus visit scheduled by phone x2
    • Does anyone know how many candidates they are interviewing? (2/20)
    • This place is going down the tubes, fast.
    • Care to elaborate?
    • 3/9 Any info on who got invite or offered the job? Just curious.
    • It's online at http://cfr.info.yorku.ca/2012/03/upcoming-events-and-opportunities-march-05-2012/
    • "Dr. Marty M. Fink — Monday, March 5 from 4:00-6:00 pm in 305 Founders College; Dr. Stephanie Clare — Monday, March 19 from 4:00-6:00 pm in 305 Founders College; Dr. Megan Rivers-Moore — Friday, March 23 from 10:30 am-12:30 pm in 305 Founders College; Dr. Amar Wahab — yet to be scheduled"
    • Any news?
      • Note that offer was accepted posted May 9.

Questions / Advice / Discussion[]

Q: I was wondering why some job ads just want the name of your references and other ads request the letters? Is there any advantage to sending the letters even though they have only asked for the name of your references? I'm using interfolio if that matters.

A (12/28/2011): Interesting question. Having been on a couple of search committees, I'd say that:

- The reason why not all positions request letters is that it's a lot of work, collectively, for recommenders to write and send letters (even electronically), so if a search committee can make a long list based on the other materials (cover letter, CV, writing samples, teaching evaluations etc.), it makes sense not to request letters upfront. The issue, for a search committee, of going this route is mainly time, since it adds a couple of weeks to the timeline (i.e. once the committee has met and decided on a long list, it then has to request the letters and give recommenders time to send them).

- I don't think there's going to be a real advantage to having letters sent, at least in most cases, and it could possibly be seen as slightly annoying, particularly if a position attracts hundreds of applications and the search committee already has a mass of material to go through for the initial review. I mean, unless your letter is written by the leader in your subfield and says that you are *the* most stellar candidate for the job ... but if that's the case, presumably your other materials will draw the attention of the search committee as well.

Q: If the deadline passed, and you still haven't submitted, Is it acceptable to apply late? Will applications ever be considered still?

  • From my limited experience having served on SCs at 2 different institutions, I can only say, "It depends." In senior searches, SCs may continue to accept applications past the advertised deadline. In junior searches that yield hundreds of applications, SCs may confine their pool of candidates to those who submitted before the deadline. HR departments at some schools create and implement detailed rules that SCs are supposed to follow strictly; these rules may include not considering applications that arrive after the advertised deadline.
  • Interesting. Thanks for your response. I suppose since it depends, I may as well send in the late application as you never know. I appreciate the advice.
  • When I've been on search committees for junior faculty, I've specifically avoided reading late applications. If someone can't be bothered to apply on time, it suggests that organizational skills and deadlines are a problem. Why would a department interview them? In this market?

There is a very useful/thoughtful discussion of the "inside hire" question on the sociology rumor mill. http://socjobs.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=misc&action=display&thread=853 I think it's worth reading.

  • Thanks for posting that link. Lots of good sense about "inside hire" rumors there.

Q: Is it worth the time & money for non-Canadians to apply for jobs in Canada, when they put Canadian applications first?

  • Non-Canadians do sometimes get hired, but their records have to be demonstrably significant and/or utterly unique. So it's worth submitting, but only if you have an exemplary record.
  • Canadian universities hire foreigners all the time. Look at any department in Canada and you will see a mix of Canadian and non-Canadian faculty. Nationality does not decide the hire by any means, and getting work visas for foreign faculty is not as difficult or expensive in Canada as it is in the US. It is woth applying. Many jobs in Canada garner weak candidate pools much smaller than in the U.S. Even with a citizen or residency preference, your odds may in fact be better in Canada than the U.S.

Q: What do you do if you're asked for a conference interview, which you were not planning on attending? Do you offer to set up a phone/skype interview or are you automatically crossed off the list?

  • You go to the conference! Interviews are hard to get.
  • Or you ask them if a phone interview is possible.
  • I've arranged for Skype video conferencing
  • I'm the initial scolder--and I'm happy that you had the wherewithal to ask for a Skype conference. I bet your self-possession will serve you well. Pardon my panic! [:)]
  • Actually, I've called two jobs and they both said that skype would be fine. I'm in Canada and my semester starts Jan 3--missing the first week of classes would be a bit extreme. So, it doesn't hurt to ask, even at the early stages, if it saves you from spending lots of $ you don't have, or don't have for the mla, or if it keeps you from missing important things. Skype is becoming more part of the customs and from what I know from friends, hasn't so far as I can tell, hurt their on-campus visit schedule

Q: Does one wear a suit for a skype interview? Sorry if this question sounds silly. I have only done phone or in person interviews and it just occured to me.... Thanks! - Yes
