  • 1/24; 1/26: Email confirmation with Affirmative Action Data Request Form [w/missing link :)] (x3)
  • 1/26: asked for additional materials (x3)
    • Curious what additional materials were requested. (x2) Would people mind sharing what they were asked for since the ad asked for quite a bit?
  • Rejection email: 1/26. (x4) Very polite email stating the applicant pool was "very deep" at 136 applications submitted. Best of luck to everyone who applied; this is a school and department on top of their game.
  • I received none of these notifications/requests/rejections. Anyone else? (x4)
  • I received two AA request form emails today, but no request or rejection. Not sure what to make of that...(x5)
  • Well, the silence has been broken for me at least. Rejection via email (1/30) (x3)
  • Still nothing here. (1/31)
  • Rejection email 1/31
  • 2/2 Request for phone interview
  • Rejection via email. 2/3 (x2)

Arizona State University (Lecturer, Barrett Honors College)[]

  • The Barrett Honors College of Arizona State University invites applications for a faculty position in the social or natural sciences starting in Fall 2011.
  • Applicants with specialties in Asia, Africa and Latin America and/or whose teaching and research engages diverse perspectives and contributes to knowledge about our multicultural society are particularly encouraged.
  • To ensure full consideration, application materials must be received by March 4, 2011.
    • Apologies if I'm missing something... I can't seem to find an actual job ad for the position using that link. I just see the job listed, but with no details or anything (the link ON the job page just takes you to the homepage of the honors college itself). Anyone know how/where to find the full ad with details? (1/26). Sorry about that! We just changed the website for the college and it broke the link. We're working on it right now. In any case, the info was the same as is posted in the chronicle ad below. If you'd like to know more about the honors college go to http://honors.asu.edu
    • Here: http://chronicle.com/jobs/0000666705-01 (1/27) Thanks! :)

Beloit College (Women's and Gender Studies)[]

Coe College (ACM-Mellon Post-Doc, Gender Studies)[]

  • Coe College seeks a Fellow in Gender Studies. Ph.D. must be completed before September 2011.
  • To ensure full consideration, application materials must be received by November 15, 2010.
  • Received email acknowledgement of application (11/8) (11/15x4) (1/5x2)
  • The website lists January 1st as the application deadline. May I ask where you saw November 15? A: It was on that same Coe College website (linked above) that I saw November 15--and it now looks like the application deadline has been extended to January 1. You might want to email or call to double-check the deadline. R: Thank you!
  • Anyone heard anything besides an acknowledgement on this one?
    • Nope, likely because of the posts above yours: the deadline was extended to January 1. We probably won't hear until mid-late January now. (12/9)
    • Yeah, they extended the deadline. I wish I would've known that before I rushed to send in my application. I wouldn't be surprised if they started contacting applicants early next year.
    • Any idea why they would extend the deadline when every other job seems to be inundated with too many applications as it is?
      • Many reasons for this, two I can think of offhand: 1) they actually didn't get many applications (a job in my department only got 40, so not ALL open positions are getting hundreds), and 2) they realized they wouldn't have time to review them until after winter break, so they extended the deadline instead of having a huge gap between deadline and review. (12/13)
      • Anyone heard anything? 1/16
        • Not me. (1/17) x3
        • Not me. (1/25) Anyone know what's going on there?
        • Emailed to get an update. I was told the search committee hopes to have a list complete late this week or early next week. (1/25) Thanks for emailing & for sharing! (Thanks! x5)
  • Rejection received by email. (1/28) x6 (That letter was kinda harsh! Jeez.) (I thought it was pretty standard.) (Eh, sometimes they're able to muster another sentence or two.)
  • Agreed. Ouch, Coe. That hurt.
  • Phone interview scheduled (1/31) x 2.
  • I still haven't heard anything - no rejection email, no request to interview. Nada? (2/5) x2 (never even received a confirmation, though, so I figured something had gone wrong somewhere)
  • Same boat: no request, no rejection -- and I did receive an ack back in November. We must be second string. (Feb15 - me too)
  • Campus interview scheduled (2/28)

  • Rejection recieved. Offer made and accepted.

  • Link to University's on-line application
  • The Women's and Gender Studies Program at DePaul University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning in fall 2011.
  • Primary consideration will be given to applicants with a Ph.D. in women's and/or gender studies or another related interdisciplinary humanities-based field. We especially invite applicants with expertise in the intersecting fields of feminist gender and cultural studies, with a focus on contemporary and historical transnational feminist movements.
  • Review of applications with complete documentation will begin December 15, 2010 and will continue until the position is filled.
  • Does anyone else have the sense that this was tailored for their current visiting professor? (looks like it to me but still hopeful)
  • Was this search canceled? When I click on the application link, I receive a message indicating that the "page you have attempted to access is unavailable." And I don't see the posting when I do a search on the DePaul HR site.
  • maybe the system wasn't changed to reflect the new due date in January? So it's not accepting applications past Dec. 15th (they'll need to fix that)? I'll email right now to find out.
  • Anyone gotten confirmation of application? (1/10) (No -- don't think they sent them 2/3)
  • 2/4: Request for phone interview (x3)
  • Did any of you with phone interviews get specific times? I just got an email asking to indicate some times, but have not heard since. Not sure if I am supposed to be sitting by the phone or what....
  • They plan to contact people sometime w/in the time range given; they aren't giving specific times.
  • I was coming here to ask the same question. I don't think the emails I got made that plan clear. (2/8; yes, the previous posters are correct; just keep the phone next to you!)
  • (2/14) campus invitation for early march. email indicated that they were bringing 3 finalists. yikes! (x2)
  • An offer has been made and accepted.

DePauw University (IN)[]

  • Women's Studies: DePauw University, Women's Studies. Tenure track position beginning August 2011. Teaching includes Introduction to Women's Studies and any of the following: feminist theory, transnational feminisms, sustainability studies, queer studies, or feminist science studies.
  • Application review begins October 1 and continues until position is filled.
  • Confirmation of materials and diversity form (link) via email (10/27)(11/8 x3)
  • Planning to conduct short interviews at NWSA
  • Is this re: the general confirmation email about interviews, or did you get an interview notification/scheduling communication?
  • Invited to interview at NWSA (10/29)
  • Given that I got the email yesterday and that the NWSA is practically next week, I think this means I'm out of the running.
    • Not necessarily out of the running. I got an email saying they were doing interviews at NWSA but I simply can't afford to go to the conference, and they likely know that people can't always go. However, when I called to check on whether letters of rec had made it there they said that they got three times as many applications as they expected (not sure exactly what that means but I'm guessing a few hundred). I don't think that not being at NWSA means you're out of the running... not sure how important conference interviews are at NWSA but at my other professional conference they mean pretty much nothing in terms of whether you'll get a phone or campus interview. (11/10)
  • Phone interview Nov 15
  • Any word on this? I thought they said they'd be scheduling campus interviews soon. (11/22)
  • I haven't heard anything either. Any one else heard anything?
  • I had interviewed at NWSA & been told then that they would be inviting candidates to campus in December. I still haven't heard anything either way. Has anyone else? (11/30)
  • Campus interview scheduled (11/30) x2
  • An offer has been made

  • I spoke with the administrator (who is so nice) and she said everything would be decided by the end of the month. I wonder if this means that they do have alternates and are waiting to hear if the offers are accepted. Best case scenario, I hope it means I am an alternate.... Good luck to us all at finding the right match!
  • at least one offer accepted 2/18. heard from a faculty member at Duke (affiliated with WS) that both went to people with tenure-track jobs.
  • If the above is true, I am really disappointed. What's the point of calling it a post-doc?!@$(*@&#
  • Alas, I guess I cannot take this one personally, despite the heart and soul I poured into this application. On a positive note, writing it really helped me to hone my ideas.... Good luck to everyone...
  • Rejection (by email) 2/25. They email doesn't say it, but if it's any consolation, they did not review applications that did not meet the eligibility requirements (2-10 yrs out).

  • Nothing as of 12/9
  • Still nothing as of 12/16--le sigh. How many of you were applying at the Assistant/Advanced Assistant level (like me)? Assuming an Associate would have the edge here...
  • I have heard that they had so many applicants that the short list is made up of all senior folks. Double sigh. (12/16)
  • Has anyone else (besides me) emailed for an update on the search? (01/07/11)

    Hamilton, Ontario L8S 4L9
  • Applications received by January 17, 2011, will be assured of full consideration. Applicants should arrange for three letters of reference and graduate transcripts to reach the Department by the same date.
    • Any news yet on this? Only a week after the deadline, I know, but I'm wondering what their timeline is like.
    • Just an email saying my app has been submitted to the hiring committee for review. No timeline. 1/20
    • weird, I didn't receive an email like this even though my application package was sent on Jan 3rd. Has everyone else received a confirmation? (1/24) Ditto - no ack for app sent in early Jan.
    • I didn't receive an email either. I wrote to ask if they had received all my materials and the admn person said yes. But no niceties nor info about submission to the hiring committee.
    • I received an email 1/20 saying that my application was incomplete, but no other info
    • No email of any kind. Since there is a preference for Canadian citizens, and I'm not one, I'm assuming that's why I haven't heard anything. 1/25
    • To the above: It's an open secret that the disclaimer at the end of the ads of Canadian universities is a legal formality. Most Canadian universities actively court US T-Ts or graduates and there is a consistent pattern that has emerged in the hiring practices of the last 5-8 years where US degree-holders have edged out Canadian ones in campus visits and final appointments. This is true certainly of UT and UBC; places like McMaster are likely to follow the trend rather than buck it.
    • I'm not a Canadian citizen, and I was the one who originally posted about receiving an email. I wouldn't read much into it, honestly. My app was a day or so late, so that might have something to do with the email confirmation. If you're concerned about your app being complete, I'd just send an email to the admin. assistant.
    • Canadian citizen chiming in here to comment on the preference for US candidates. This is true of our top research institutions. Not only is it apparent at U of T and UBC, but also at McGill and Queen's. I wish there was equitable "preference" for Canadians applying to US jobs because we're doubly losing out here.
    • Still no news? Anybody heard anything?
    • They sent me an email telling me I was missing two references and my app wouldn't be considered without them; I contacted those two referees and they were very confused, seeing as they'd both received emails thanking them for their references. They seem to have an issue with organization, maybe.
    • 2 friends applying for the job said they received confirmation of completed application. i had not. emailed admin assistant, no response. finally gave up and emailed head. confirmed receipt and said that application was under review.
    • received an email on Friday Feb 11 indicating one of my letters was missing. Arranged to have it emailed by prof in question.
    • To previous poster: Did they give a sense of their timeline in the email?
    • still no word on this?
    • February 18th - on-campus interviews scheduled, five candidates (!) - 270 applications, they said.
    • Interviews scheduled and you didn't schedule me? Shame on you McMaster.
    • To the on-campus interview poster of 18 Feb: did you receive a rejection email, or are you one of the lucky ones interviewed? (If so, congrats!) Just wondering, as I know my application was complete, but I did not receive interview request/rejection. Thanks!
    • So disappointing!! 270 applications??? Any links available to the job talks? Curious to see who was shortlisted. Was this communicated by email or on the phone?
    • Secondhand info that WGS trumped English in emphasis when shortlisting candidates. (Admittedly, heard from a Canadian friend). - thanks for this info - makes me feel better since I'm primarily English/PC rather than primarily WGS.
    • Well, I'm WGS focussed, have lots of funding and pubs and didn't hear a peep. Is this for certain? Can the original poster tell us more? How did you hear, for example about the on-campus interviews?
    • Interesting. What kinds of work in WGS were they *really* looking for though (pop culture for example)? Any chance this could be an internal and/or partner type hire?
    • Has anyone heard _directly_ from McMaster? Either rejected or interview scheduled?
    • Anyone know if their finalists are Canadian or if they've decided to hire Americans (like, it seems, a hell of a lot of other Canadian jobs this year)?
    • I have an on-campus interview - they contacted me by phone and email. I'm Canadian, and more WGS than strictly English. I do critical race/queer stuff. No idea about the other four candidates on those counts, though! And I think it's interesting that they didn't do any preliminary interviews. - I've had a couple of on-campus interviews at Canadian schools, though not this one, and have never had a preliminary interview; they tend to go straight to campus. Also, I am Canadian with a British, not Oxbridge but close, PhD.
    • The above italicised bit does not hold for all or even most Canadian universities: many interview at MLA or do phone interviews. (I am yet to hear of Skype being used). In the case of McM, the rush to on-campus interview is necessitated probably by the fact that they advertised so late and in a position where it is likely they would have received residuals of the via-MLA process. Of course, other less palatable reasons may also be there, but all that would be vain speculation for now.
    • Congrats! Curious - did you do your PhD at a Canadian or a US university?
  • Rejection letter via snail mail. Probably a form letter. Claimed to be "very impressed with my credentials" in spite of rejection. (3/1) ditto, same letter 2/28 - same letter here too. "wanted [me] to know that [they] were very impressed with [my] credentials". Earth to SC: if you send a form letter like that to everyone, it stops being encouraging and starts being patronizing. * Same letter here too (3/3) - what is sad is that i actually felt better when i read that they were "very impressed with my credentials." I guess a lot of brilliant people applied. I'd love to hear job talk titles. Congrats to those who are interviewing (i doubt they are on this site trolling around though. :))
  • Rumor has it that they've made a decision - can anyone confirm? Yep - they've offered, and apparently the person's accepted (3/24).

The Comparative American Studies Program at Oberlin College invites applications for a full-time non-continuing faculty position in the College of Arts and Sciences. Appointment to this position will be for a term of one year, beginning in the Fall semester of 2011, and will carry the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor.

The incumbent will teach a total of five courses in the general area of cultural studies, with a preference for visual culture studies. We are particularly interested in candidates with training in feminist cultural theories and methodologies, utilizing both humanistic and intersectional approaches to the study of sexuality, citizenship, race, globalization and inequality. The Comparative American Studies Program is committed to interdisciplinary and theoretically informed intersectional pedagogy at the undergraduate level. The faculty member is expected to integrate issues of gender, race, ethnicity, class, sexuality, and citizenship within a comparative and/or transnational frame throughout their teaching. Successful candidates will also be expected to participate in the full range of faculty responsibilities.

Among the qualifications required for the appointment is the Ph.D. degree (in hand or ABD). Candidates must demonstrate interest and potential excellence in undergraduate teaching. Successful teaching experience at the college level is desirable.

To be assured of consideration, a letter of application, including a curriculum vitae, graduate academic transcripts, a short writing sample, course syllabi if available, title and one sentence description of 2-3 courses candidate could teach, and at least three recent letters of reference* should be sent to CAST Search Committee, King 141D, Oberlin College, Oberlin, OH 44074 (Phone: 440-775-8982; fax 440-775-8644) by February 15, 2011. Application materials received after that date may be considered until the position is filled. Salary will depend on qualifications and experience. *By providing these letters you agree that we may contact your references.

Oberlin College is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer with a strong institutional commitment to the development of a climate that supports equality of opportunity and respect of differences based on gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, and gender identity and expression. Oberlin was the first coeducational institution to grant bachelor's degrees to women and historically has been a leader in the education of African Americans; the college was also among the first to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation. In that spirit, we are particularly interested in receiving applications from individuals who would contribute to the diversity of our faculty.

  • CV and cover letter only due November 1, 2010
  • http://blog.lib.umn.edu/amstdy/main/2010/08/the-ohio-state-university-quee.html
  • haven't seen it posted anywhere else yet…
  • It is now posted on the MLA JIL (9/16)
  • Acknowledgment received: 10/8, 10/22, 11/2, 11/5
  • Institutional diversity form delivered by US mail: 11/2, 11/12 (2x)
  • What is the significance of the institutional diversity form? I'm under the impression that they send the form to everyone who applied, for the purpose of compiling affirmative action statistics.
  • Request for additional materials 11/16 (2x)
  • Congrats! Have others received requests? Is there any hope they are still developing a long or short list?
  • would the person who listed a request for materials mind sharing what their field is? "Queer Studies/English" is an awfully capacious set of terms, so it's hard to believe that they're not looking for someone in a particular subfield.
  • Request for additional materials 11/18 (7x)
  • Rejection email 12/2 x7
  • "Over 200 applicants applied for this position, making the decision of choosing our finalists very difficult. We have now established a list of finalists, and I regret to inform you that the committee has decided not to pursue your candidacy."
  • I didn't get a rejection, but haven't received any positive news either. Was anyone sent a request for an MLA interview today?
  • Got rejected today too; but who the heck really wants to teach in Ohio anyway, right?
  • Wow, thanks for the regionalism.
  • Just wondering were the people who got rejections previously asked to submit additional materials? I was and still haven't head anything either way
  • Like you, I received a materials request but have not received a rejection letter. I think when they say "finalists," they mean those who received writing sample and dossier requests.
  • Me three on the materials request with no news since. It seems like at this point we'll have to wait until Monday at least. Good luck to all those who are waiting.
  • Yes I was also asked for materials. I got an email today saying everything was in. But I think that was because some of my letter writers were late :) (12/6) Good luck to all of us!
  • (12/11) Has anyone who was asked to send more materials been invited for an MLA interview? I am having a hard time with the MLA interview scheduling. By when do places usually notify people? Thanks and best of luck to all!
  • MLA interview scheduled via phone call. (12/13) x3
  • Oh well, I assume since I did not get a call, I am now out of the running. Good luck on your interview! Did others get called who were asked for additional materials (12/13)?
  • I haven't heard either, and I was one of the folks asked for extra materials. I'm also presuming that I'm out of the running, but wondering if they are still going down a list to contact folks. Anyone else already contacted?
  • This is probably one of those sad, whistling-in-the-dark comments, but it seems odd that of the 8 people asked for more materials for this job, only 1 got an interview. Anyone else hear anything for the one! queer! job! of 2010-11? And good luck to all.
  • I agree, and I'm one of the eight. Whistling with you...
  • Another one of the 8 here... Has anyone contacted the dept.? I would assume that for MLA interviews they would do at least 5, since it does not require their resources (except for time), as do campus visits. Or maybe there are just others who do not check the wiki.... Hope for us???
  • I sent an email on Monday asking when MLA would be scheduled. It was before I saw the post about the interview call. No response as of 12/16
  • Rejection via email (I was asked for additional materials) 3x 12.17
  • Did your email also say we might go back into the list and contact you if none of the current interviewees work out? Is that any indication of hope, or just what they say? Anyhow, I am probably out now (no pun intended...). Good luck to those who made the next cut. Hard to make it to 15 out of 200, but not past that....
  • Anyone who did an MLA interview know anything about when they're planning to make decisions about campus visits?
  • Two finalists invited for campus visits as of yesterday. They aren't inviting anyone else. (1/11)
  • Good luck, finalists!
  • Any news here?

  • They did say end of Jan. I'm assuming they've made invites, or will soon. Anyone? (2/1)
  • Campus visit invitation (2/2 x1).
  • The search wasn't put on hold due to the budget crisis in the Oregon HE system? Word from the grapevine suggests a hiring freeze is in effect.
  • I got a campus invitation last week and then yesterday I got an email saying the search was now on hold, but to "still consider myself an active candidate." What does this mean? I can't tell from the tone of the message if there is any hope. Does anyone have any insight into this? Is it procedural? Is there a fight going on? ugh -- one of the few jobs in the field and now this.... (2/9)
  • I think that the reason for the "pause" in the search process is the budget crisis in the OR system. My impression is that it is unclear whether a search will proceed due to PSU's budget issues. (2/9)

QUESTION: Does anyone know anything about this position? I applied for a TT job in WGS last year, was asked for more materials and then never heard back. Was an offer made? On the website, it is hard to find who has full lines in the Dept. OR is this a VAP because a TT job was cancelled? Also, apparently in 2009, there was a cancelled search. Is this all for one position or multiple ones? Thanks!

- any movement/word on this? (2/15)

-wondering the same! anyone been contacted?

-I've heard nothing. 3/3

-I've heard nothing either. Given that the same search ran for a TT position last year and failed, I assume this is yet another failed search due to budget problems...

--what happened with the TT position search last year? i thought they filled it with an inside candidate. ?

  • Cross-posted at Humanities and Social Sciences Postdocs 2010-11
  • Comment 11/3: Despite the call for PhDs in "all disciplines, " this institution has only granted awards & fellowships in recent years to social scientists -- anthropologists, historians, sociologists. Are people in the arts & literature planning to apply?
  • I'm a humanities person, and no, I'm not planning to apply. The ad seems slanted to the social sciences, and given their previous years' choices, I think my time could be better spent.
  • Has anyone heard anything about this one yet? Someone over on the Humanities and Social Science Postdoc wiki reported receiving a rejection email on 3/4.
  • I applied and have not heard anything (3/8).

I imagine by the end of this week or early next week at the latest short list candidates will be informed. Hang in there! I'm freaking out too!

  • Yes, campus visits have been scheduled. Oneonta is on break this week. I guess that campus visits would start next week.

10/29: I heard a rumor that this search has been canceled.

10/29: Yep, confirmed by the department. Canceled. :( Budget cuts just announced.

11/1: Email from HR and the department citing "unexpected additional funding cuts assessed the University by the New York state legislature." Wish they'd named legislature names, so I'd know how to vote tomorrow . . .

11/1 - received cancellation notice this morning. blah.

UGH! I just finalized my application and was about to submit. There go another 1000 hours I don't have! Sorry to everyone...

I noticed that it was canceled on here about two hours after I submitted my application. Hurrah for wasted time.

Be glad no one ended up at this school since other universities in the SUNY system are cutting humanities programs completely and therefore laying off already-tenured faculty! See: http://www.albany.edu/news/9902.php?WT.svl=news

University of Chicago, Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Center for Gender Studies []

  • The Center for Gender Studies at the University of Chicago invites applications for a one-year postdoctoral fellowship beginning September 15, 2011 and lasting through the academic year. The fellow will take a leading role in a Sawyer Seminar titled "International Women's Human Rights: Paradigms, Paradoxes, and Possibilities," which is funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, will teach one undergraduate course on the seminar's issues during the 2011-12 academic year, and will co-organize one undergraduate workshop/conference.
  • Theme of Sawyer Seminar: The seminar is designed to address contradictions within the concept and practice of women's human rights. Such contradictions can be seen in the notion of a "women's crusade" that sets up an increasingly suspect opposition between the plights of women in developing countries on the one hand and advanced industrialized countries on the other, in the appropriation of the language of women's rights by groups unsympathetic to Western rights-based feminism, in the use of human rights discourse to justify military interventions, and in the reliance on a Western liberal framework that is inattentive to crucial cultural, social, and political national differences, that privileges civil and political rights over social and economic rights, and that tends to construe women in the developing world as victims of a stalled or failed modernization process. The seminar's task will be to address but also attempt to move beyond current formulations of the inherent difficulties and complexities associated with thinking about transnational feminism as a practice of declaring and claiming women's human rights. This will involve, among other things, a comparative approach to women's human rights which analyzes the differences and similarities between the European and the Indian rights traditions.
  • We will consider applications from candidates with backgrounds in the humanities, social sciences, law, or theological studies who have scholarly interests in the central themes of the Seminar.
  • The applicant must have received her or his PhD or JD between September 16, 2006 and September 15, 2011. The stipend for the postdoctoral fellowship is $50,000, plus benefits. One quarter of teaching (Autumn or Winter) is required, and the fellow is expected to be in residence full-time in academic year 2011-12.
  • Applications and letters of support must be received by February 4, 2011 to be considered.
  • Cross-posted at Humanities and Social Sciences Postdocs 2010-11
  • Any idea when these are going to be announced?
  • Decisions will be announced "sometime in April," according to the contact person.

  • Completed applications should be submitted by October 15, 2010 for full consideration. Applications will be considered until the position is filled.
  • Anybody heard anything?
  • As of today (11/2), I have heard nothing; I did send my application in on time.
  • I haven't heard anything either. But I do know that they had over 400 applications. (sorry to share bad news) (11/2)
  • Here's something interesting, I just looked at the NWSA Employment Service Listing (of institutions conducting interviews at NWSA) and Kentucky isn't on there (http://www.nwsa.org/employ/jobservice.php) even though the original post says interviews will be at NWSA. Do you think they got too many applications to shift through in time for NWSA?
  • I thought that, perhaps, since they advertised on the MLA list that they intended to interview at the MLA, which is in early January. That would be consistent with the "strong preference" for cultural/media studies and literary studies.
  • huh, interesting, I could have sworn they were on the list of folks interviewing at NWSA but maybe you're right. That revives some hope on my end.
  • I suspect they aren't doing conference interviews at all. The ads they ran on H-Net and with the AHA - for the "strong preference" for history of feminism part of the ad - did not mention interviewing at NWSA. I can't imagine they're going to both the MLA and AHA conferences in early January. So my guess - and it's only that - is that they'll do phone interviews for the first round.
  • Anything new on this one? (11/17)
  • Has anyone heard anything here? (12/1)
  • Nothing (12/2). The position was advertised as "Open Rank," though, and I don't think there are many senior folks who use the Wiki. Maybe they've been talking to senior scholars?
  • I broke down & emailed the admin. assistant. Short list is being finalized & candidates will be notified next week (12/6) Thanks for doing that. It's nice to hear what's going on. (thanks x5)
  • The admin. assistant let me know that the short list has now been contacted. (12/15)
  • A little heartbroken. Fantastic job; great, "new" department. Good luck (if any short list candidates are reading this)! (12/16) (agreed x2) (i would have endured Dr. Rand Paul as my Senator for this job. Sigh. Best of!).
  • Five candidates were brought to campus for interviews. The department hopes to hire 2 of 5. All campus interviews have been completed. Job offers should be forthcoming in the next week or so. (2/7/11)
  • Can the people who are hired post their fields? I'd be interested to see which direction this department is heading in. (yes, would be interesting to find this out)

The fellow will take a leading role in a Sawyer Seminar entitled "Globalizationand the New Politics of Women's Rights," which is funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The postdoctoral fellow may come from any discipline in the social sciences or humanities.
  • Ad in Chronicle: http://chronicle.com/jobs/0000658229-01/

Other topics related to changing global context of women's rights are also of interest.

Virginia Commonwealth University[]

  • Tenure eligible asst. or assoc. professor in field of "Gender and Sexuality Studies" (one area in search for 4 separate postions)
  • See VCU's Position Announcement for further details.
  • The application review process will begin on October 20, 2010. For full consideration, applications must be received prior to November 25, 2010. We will be available to interview at the MLA conference.
  • Acknowledgement Received: 10/27 (x2)
  • Cross-posted at African American 2011, Film Studies 2010-2011, & Other Ethnic American 2011.
  • Request for additional materials via email (11/17)
  • Request for writing sample via email (12/1)
  • Any interview requests? (12/12)
  • No--I am not even sure what their next step would be--telephone interview or on-campus? (12/12)
  • African American 2011 lists one "12/3 (MLA)" interview scheduled for this search, but breadth of search seems to suggest there may also be other venues for interviewing. Several more materials requests are also posted on the Film Studies page (link above).
  • Thanks for the info. My discipline does not fit into MLA--perhaps I should just ask the chair; I made an inquiry, and the chair's prompt response was that they will be setting up telephone and MLA interviews shortly. MLA interviews are for the ethnic literature and film/media studies positions, and telephone interviews for other postions will take place in January after MLA (12/12)
    • So has anyone been contacted this week for a telephone or MLA interview? Seems really late for them to wait until next week. (12/17)
    • From Film Studies 2010-2011: "Email request for MLA interview (12/16)"
    • "Other Ethnic American 2011" has someone who's got a request for MLA interview on 12/17. When I made an inquiry on 12/12, the chair made it clear that they must decide on MLA interviews before making decisions for telephone interviews. So, I think that it is not unreasonable to assume that telephone interveiew requests are yet to come (12/18).
    • Received an email from chair with an update on the search. The chair confirmed the MLA as well as post-MLA phone interviews. There were also 500 applicants for the positions. (12/20) (x2 I thought that the email was truly considerate--not knowing & waiting is the worst part of job search).
    • Rejection (via email) 1/4
    • Phone interview scheduled via email (1/13). x3
    • For the phone interviewees, does anyone know much about which of the four positions you're up for? The ad is not very specific...
    • Phone interview scheduled for medical humanities position 1/23 (via email)
    • You just had an email about a phone interview on 1/23? I had thought that they were making campus visit decisions this week. I guess if they're still interviewing that may not be the case.
    • Had a phone interview, and was told that decisions re. campus interviews would be made late this week or early next week. I gather that this timetable applies to all four positions (1/24); Sorry, this timetable is apparently for phone interview folks only. Some of the MLA interviewees are contacted for on-campus visits, according to "African American" and "Other Ethnic American" wiki (1/25).
    • Had a phone interview today (1/26) and was told that they would be conducting phone interviews until Monday: sometime shortly thereafter they will decide on campus visits.
    • Does anyone know what the teaching load is at VCU?
    • Anyone heard from VCU after a telephone interview?
    • Rcvd request for campus visit (2/3).
    • VCU teaching load generally 3/2 but varies by Department and negotiation.
  • 3/11: Other Ethnic American 2011 states at least one offer has been made and accepted.
  • 3/18: I'm curious: Did they ever make an offer to anyone doing gender studies, transatlantic studies, and/or medical humanities? Heard 2nd hand that the search should be wrapped up by now.

  • Anyone who had a phone interview with them hear anything yet? Yes, on-campus interview scheduled (01/13) x1.
  • Any news? Anyone get an offer?
  • Heard an offer was made this month
  • I had a campus interview for this job. The philosophy department was lovely. The Women's and Gender Studies faculty looked completely spaced out throughout the whole visit. I wish I had known then that they had an internal candidate. What a waste of my creative time! Shame on you, guys!

Wilfrid Laurier University (Women and Gender Studies, sexuality emphasis)[]

  • Deadline: March 21, 2011.
  • I heard they've already started contacting references (3/24).
  • Three days after the post closed?
  • If that's the case, one would usually be suspicious of an internal search. Either that or Laurier has an unusually studious SC. Can any of the references contacted verify this?
  • To the person who posted this on 3/24: what exactly did you hear? Sounds suspect to me too.
  • It is strange. But one of my references forwarded me the request, and a friend who also applied heard from one of her refs that they'd been contacted, too. Neither of us are internal candidates - perhaps they're asking for refs for everyone who applied? (In which case I wish they'd let us just send them by interfolio or whatever we're using.)
  • Even stranger, only one of my refs was contacted...
  • Thanks Wilrid Laurier for writing such a vague job posting. I just read their newsletter (March), which states that the job has a focus on MASCULINITIES, period. Would have been helpful to know this so as to tailor the application accordingly. Anyone heard anything?
    • seriously? ... agreed: why not put that in the call?
  • My referees were also contacted three days after the job closed, and I haven't heard anything since. And I'm not internal.
  • I wrote to check on the search process, and they said that I'm not shortlisted - which is not to say that they've contacted the lucky folks yet, but at least that they've rejected some of us!
  • i also wrote to check and was informed that I was not "shortlisted for the position" - they are planning to send out and e-mail "to all applicants next week letting them know the status. " 4/22
  • I can't believe they called this an "Assistant Professor of Sexuality Studies" so as to hire someone who does "Gender Studies" (masculinities)!! Mind-boggling.
  • As noted on 4/22, it seems they have sent the mass email to those who were not shortlisted. Like others here, I, too, suspect an internal candidate. My primary emphasis of work is in masculinities, I served as a gender and sexuality specialist for a decade, I have numerous publications, and my references are from Canadian and U.S. gender studies folks who are top in their field. But, as we all know, there are A LOT of wonderfully qualified people out there--with far too few positions available!
  • rejection email x 2 (4/25) and another (5/1)
  • Offer made and accepted and the person was not an internal candidate.

Yale University, LGBT Studies (Interdisciplinary; Pref. Soc. Sci. and/or Non-US Area)[]

  • Deadline: 10/01
  • https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/Yale/WGSS
  • Has anyone received confirmation for this one?
  • I've heard that they are looking for an anthropologist and that some people have already made the first cut. (10/27)- I can confirm that they want an anthropologist.
  • Hello; how do you know they want an anthropologist? I know they are searching for social scientist type who does queer works outside of the U.S. But how do you get such insider info?
  • I was invited to submit my full PhD thesis as well as any other relevant pulications on October 19, and was told to do so asap as the committee wanted to move forward quickly. (I am an anthropologist.) (10/30)
  • Ditto to the last point (I'm also an anthropologist), nothing back so far, 2 wks after submitting. (11/4)
  • Four candidates have been invited to campus visits throughout November. Apparently they are making a decision by the end of the year. (11/5)
  • Hey Yale, thanks for wasting our time. If you want an anthropologist, why don't you state that in your ad, so other humanities scholars and non-anthropologist social scientists can use our time for other applciation, or our next article? A: Actually, it's a political scientist.
  • Yale has made an offer.
  • Seems like the non-US part was also optional, then.
  • Yeah- who did they hire? Can anyone confirm?
  • There are plenty of political scientists who work on non-US.
  • Rejection email X 4 (1/20) - at least the rejection letter writers are learning to be more personable. And yes I found the letter to be the loveliest rejection yet.)
  • Still wondering who got the job. Guess their name will be on website this fall.
  • I went for a campus visit for this job and never heard back from them officially. Eventually I emailed someone personally for feedback and received a lovely note in reply. But no official rejection letter! Dang.
