Brigham Young University - Piano Faculty (Deadline: September 30, 2015)[]

  • Anyone know if this is a tenure-track position vs. Full-Time/Non-TT? Vitae post didn't specify.
    • It's a tenured/TT opening.
    • As I understand it, BYU doesn't have "tenure" exactly. The process and rank is similar, but if you are not in good standing with the Mormon church your position can be revoked. You don't have to be Mormon to work there, but "All faculty members are required to abide by the standards of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). Strong preference is given to members of the sponsoring church."
  • Responsibilities: 1) Coordinate all non-major piano study including class laboratory piano and applied piano (private instruction); 2) Coordinate piano proficiency exams for music majors; 3) Supervise and train all graduate and adjunct teachers; 4) Teach applied piano to music majors in both performance and non-performance programs (composition, music education, commercial music). Participate in jury examinations and pre-recital hearings; 5) Teach piano-related courses including piano literature, keyboard harmony skills, accompanying, etc., as assigned; 6) Participate in area-wide events and department, college, and university committees as assigned; 7) Pursue scholarly and creative endeavors, which may include solo and collaborative music performance, publications, arranging, lecture and guest teaching, and scholarly research.
  • Re-poted on December 11. So first search failed, I guess?
    • They have two professors retiring.
  • At this point, it's just being extended. It's a common thing to do if they feel that they didn't initially get the desired level of applicants (or if the person for whom this description was written wasn't interested...).
  • I honestly think that one of the biggest difficulties for Brigham Young is to find a Mormon pianist. Technically, yes, you "don't have to be" Mormon to work at BYU, but let's face it, how many people REALLY understand what the Mormon Church is about, if you're not from Utah?
    • 15 million Mormons now.  They don't all live in Utah...
    • Why don't they pick one of the Five Browns?

  • Did they not hire anyone this past summer?
  • They evidently did not. But does anyone know if they even brought any candidates to campus at all before their search was cancelled last summer?
  • Candidates were invited to campus but the search was disbanded... With the changes from lecturer to tenure track, who knows what went on. Very strange.
  • This position has had a fair amount of transmogrifications: it used to TT, and then that person left; then, it was an interim/visiting and the TT search failed and the interim person left; then, it became a lecturer position and that person left after a year or two; then they did a search this past summer and it failed; now it's come full-circle back to TT.  In other words, they're back to step one after nearly a decade of nonstop turnover.
  • Has anyone heard anything? Have they picked a list for phone interview/additional material request yet?
  • They've invited 3 candidates for campus visits
  • I received an email that they made a hire.
  • Anyone knows who the lucky person is?
  • Congratulations Ben Corbin! (UT Austin)

  • 3/12 interview scheduled.
  • Already?!! They have been advertising it for only 2 weeks!!! Isn't it against the rules for tenure-track position searches?!!
  • Is this an internal hire?.
  • In addition to all the usual documents--cover letter, CV, etc.-- you have to submit a "Faculty Application" which is designed to make you go bonkers......
  • Must be an internal hire then.
  • It could be, but did anyone else notice that this job was posted on Wiki a couple of weeks ago, and then somebody deleted it? Then somehow a few days later it got reposted. Then, it turned around and somebody said "interview scheduled." My first thought was exactly the same: "already?" Then I started wondering if there couldn't have been a possibility that somebody REALLY wants this job and wants to lesson his/her competition, so by posting "interview scheduled," it could potentially discourage other applicants from even applying if they haven't sent in their applications by this point. Just a thought. I could be skeptical, but I'm not a first-timer on the market, and experience tells me that people DO lie sometimes on Wiki, for one reason or another.
  • 3/15 for the record, the job was posted on the wiki on 3/2 and was deleted twice (both times for less than half an hour before someone reversed the deletion). After it happened the second time, I blocked the IP address for vandalism. The user who posted "Interview scheduled" above (on 3/12) was a different IP/user from the one who deleted it twice.
  • Have a feeling it will be an internal hire.
  • Have a feeling you don't know what you're talking about.

    • PLEASE, WE NEED A GREAT FACULTY!!!too bad that Nerikis are gone.
    • Not going to regret for a second that Nerikis are gone. They were both mediocre teachers and not very nice people either. Got hired only because Shigeo was Starker's accompanist. I heard Shigeo play couple of times: miserable. We need some good faculty who would care about their students. Unfortunately, there is nobody like that on the piano faculty now--it is pretty much disfunctional. I don't envy that poor person who will get the job--you will find yourself in a snake's pit!
    • Was this changed into a collaborative position?
    • The above comment is referring to this. It's a big change if that's the case. Also noteworthy that she doesn't begin until 2017.
    • Unrelated to this search, but RIP Edmund Battersby, who apparently died in his sleep on March 25.

Indiana University of Pennsylvania: Applied Piano (full-time, one year) (Deadline: 30 November 2015)[]

  • The Department of Music at Indiana University of Pennsylvania invites applications for a temporary, full-time faculty position in applied piano for the 2016-2017 academic year.
  • Teach and recruit undergraduate and graduate applied piano students, class piano, and other responsibilities according to the successful applicant’s areas of expertise and the needs of the department.
  • Master’s degree in Piano Performance required; DMA (or ABD) in Piano Performance preferred. Candidate must show evidence of successful college teaching as demonstrate a record of national and/or international performing experience.
  • Additional strengths in at least one of the following areas are desired: collaborative piano in classical and/or jazz styles, piano pedagogy, music theory, aural skills, or music appreciation.
  • Candidates must communicate effectively and perform well during the interview(s).
  • This is a posting for consideration by PASSHE faculty with rights under Article 29 of the Agreement between APSCUF and the PASSHE.
  • ONLY APPLICATIONS FROM PASSHE FACULTY THAT HAVE RECEIVED NOTICE OF RETRENCHMENT WILL BE CONSIDERED.
  • It always strikes me as odd when a temporary position includes recruitment duties.  "Please come to our great school!  By the time you get here, I will be gone!"
  • Sun Min Kim was hired recently there in Summer 2015 as a last-minute job fill. He's a wonderful pianist and will likely be strongly considered for the (more?) permanent position. It's strange however that it is not being advertised as a permament full-time or tenure track.. and this job has recently turned a few times.
    • Everyone is a wonderful pianist, it's a fairly tired cliche at this point...
    • There are a lot of wondeful pianists out there, but NOT everyone is.....
    • Sadly, it's ALL about connections.  You ain't got none...better learn how to make a killer cappucino.
    • Not completely true. My last two job offers came from places where I had zero connections (either personally, or via references). Connections can help; so does being qualified/experienced.
    • How nice for you, but I'm sure you can understand the frustration when a clearly more experienced, qualified and talented applicant is continually passed over for "someone they knew."
  • Further odd is the fact that the application materials are to be sent to the college president's office, not the music department or HR. Let's stay tuned for further developments. Is anyone out there even able to apply?
  • It appears that it's only open to faculty who got bumped from their jobs elsewhere in the Pennsylvania higher ed system.  That can't be too many pianists, eh?  Perhaps no pianists are qualified to apply at all, but various laws require the admin to advertise the job before they cancel the position.
  • The Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE, of which IUP is a part) is at the point where they're laying off tenured faculty and eliminating entire programs (such as MUSIC): click this and then click this.  Proooooooobably not a good idea to apply for this job.

  • FYI, the application process for this job requires you to answer some specific questions before you can apply, including (but not limited to) certifying that you don't drink alcohol (which is expressely forbidden in the faculty handbook).
  • FYI, in the past there was a policy stating that employees could only view movies at Christian theatres.  And no R rated films, inside or outside of the home. I don't know if this has been relaxed, but it was conveyed to me during a phone interview.
  • That being said, it sure is a good school academically, with decent reputation. In that sense, it would be a good job to have.
  • Jan.28: Completion of supplemental questions requested
  • Feb. 8: Phone interviews scheduled
  • Anyone heard anything about campus interview yet?
  • Campus interview scheduled
  • Who are the finalists? There is an internal, right?

  • Surprise, everyone! The current piano faculty's wife got the job. She already resigned from her current position at Claflin a few months ago before this position was even posted, so when I saw this position opening up, I had a feeling that it was going to be a fake search with the intention of hiring her in the end. And it happened! So many fake searches these days ....
  • Yes, but there are three things to consider:
    • Everyone saw this coming from a mile away.
    • You really, really, really don't want to live or work in Beaumont (there are more oil refineries than there are residents; the public schools are perpetually under investigation by the TEA; violent crime is sky-high, etc.). It is literally one of the most horrible places on earth to reside in.
    • For detailed information on piano searches, please refer to my blog post on this topic, as this will help eliminate any pretense or hurt feelings: http://academicjobs.wikia.com/wiki/User_blog:THE_CAR-X_MAN/All_piano_searches_are_fake_searches.
  • Not exactly a riveting argument, Car-X Man. I've been offered two positions this year, and I had connections at neither school to faculty, administration or students. Hard for me to figure out how either of those searches were fake.
    • Great job, Bowling Green! A stellar accomplishment.

Maintain local, regional, and national visibility as a piano performer, collaborator, and teacher. Work to recruit and retain students. Advise students, participate in scholarly professional activities, manage staff accompanists, and perform department, university and community service. The candidate should demonstrate the ability to teach in a secondary area at the collegiate level, such as piano pedagogy, music theory, musicology, or jazz. Demonstrated activity and success as a performer through local, regional, and national visibility as a piano performer, collaborator, and teacher.
  • Anyone have any info on how this is proceeding?
  • Has anyone been contacted?
    • Recieved an email 7/01 that I have met the 'minimum level of qualification' and that they have reviewed all the candidates.  Nothing else yet. x4
    • I love that wording:  "You have met the minimum qualifications..."
    • Doesn't that pretty much mean "everybody," though? I mean, everybody on the market is practically either an ABD or already has the DMA in hand. Yes, some people have more experience than others, but we are talking about "minimum qualifications" here ... That pretty much is a meaningless email if you ask me.
    • Yes, it's fairly meaningless.  What it means is that HR has done a first pass through all the applications and eliminated those with no appropriate degree or legal right to work in the US, and those with a record as a serial killer, etc.  The remaining applicants are thus minimally qualified in the sense that they are not yet disqualified.
    • Phone interview scheduled
    • On-campus interviews completed in February. Does anyone know if the search was successful?
    • Rejection email received, and I had an on-campus interview.
    • So sorry to hear that. You would think that search committees should be a bit more collegial with candidates who went on campus. After all, you've had some human interactions for a few hours together. This just goes to show that academic searches are mechanical and at the end of the day, institutions are only self-serving and have no true respects toward any candidate. Even for people who have gotten a job, frankly, they only "cherish" you as long as you are of use to them. Stay on the market at all times even when you have a job!
    • Rejection email as well, following an on-campus interview.  (In fact, I was only notified after following up with the committee months after the interview.)  Still haven't been reimbursed as promised for travel expenses, roughly three months later.
    • My guess is that they've been terribly disorganized. I never got the early "you have the mininum requirements" email, even though I meet all the requirements (and then some, of course :)) and have many years of teaching experience. I wish them well, but am glad they passed me now that I've read the comments here.

  • They have hired Matti Raekallio, previously on faculty at Juilliard. http://news.oberlin.edu/articles/renowned-pianist-matti-raekallio-join-oberlin-conservatory-faculty/
  • If this is my competition for each job I apply for, it may be difficult to land a position... (See Indiana for further examples...)
    • This is not your competition for most of the positions that are posted here. If a school like this advertises for a "senior-level artist-teacher," that refers to someone who is a late-career full professor or someone with an active concert profile (Raekallio is both). On the other hand, what does make it hard to get a "regular" piano job is the fact that 120+ people with mostly similar qualifications are all applying for the same entry/mid-level positions. Too many zombies, too few brains to munch on.
      • Please forgive my deadpan droll above...

  • Additional Information: This is a full-time, term appointed, tenure track position beginning August 2016. Visa sponsorship is available for this position.
  • Has anyone heard anything from them?
    • Trust me, you really don't want to work there.
    • May I ask why? (Is it an issue just with this particular SUNY branch or all SUNY institutions?)
    • Four piano teachers railroaded out in the span of five years
    • This information is inaccurate: for three years, there was a full-time faculty who moved on. Happens in all academic institutions.
      • HD, in and out in a year; JM, in and out in two years; TH, in and out in a year; DN, in and out in three years. Okay, so it's four people in seven years, but I've seen first-hand what they've done to their faculty. It's not a friendly place.
    • I'm afraid one-year replacements and tenure-track appointments are indiscriminately lumped together in the above description. Once again, the reason this site exists is largely because people either retire or move to other jobs.  There are institutions with a significantly larger turnover rate, yet they aren't necessarily labelled as "unfriendly".
    • Statements untrue;  all those people mentioned (except JM) took on full time adjunct positions.  They found tenure track positions later, and moved on.  I worked there, and it is wonderful place to work.
    • Phone Interviews completed
    • Anyone knows if campus interviews have been scheduled yet?

University of Cincinnati - College-Conservatory of Music - Assistant/Associate Professor of Piano  - 2 positions. (Deadline: 9/30/15)[]

  • See also here .
  • I have it on good authority that the searches will not fail this year.
    • We hope, but you never know!
    • Phone interview mid-October
    • Some of the Finalists were at CCM this week (11/2)
    • Who was in Finals?!?
    • I saw 3 of the Finalists in their recitals, but not sure who else was here - Ran Dank, Cathal Breslin, and Dror Biran
    • On the wikis of many other disciplines, individual names are rarely mentioned until an offer has been accepted. I believe the same practice should be followed here. Even positive comments about individuals are potentially damaging or uncomfortable for participants in a search.
    • Congratulations to Ran Dank and Dror Biran - https://ccmpr.wordpress.com/2015/11/25/ccm-welcomes-award-winning-pianists-dror-biran-and-ran-dank-to-keyboard-studies-faculty/
    • They are 2 great pianists, with great backgrounds.....but the article says Mr. Biran is already CCM adjunct faculty, and Mr. Dank is married to one of the current CCM piano faculty...
      • So what? Nepotism laws surely prevented Ms. Lee from being on the search committee, and maybe Mr. Brian quite simply played the best recital, gave the best interview, and taught the best master class. The contracts are signed, so let's troll the IU posting, okay?
      • No big surprises here, obviously all of the candidates being considered for a CCM position are at the top of their field. The 2 new hires are very successful pianists, AND the search committee thought they were a good fit for the school - its simple!
    • I saw all four candidates, and I would say the results are completely justified - Both were very strong.

  • Phone Interview: 1/19/2016
  • Campus Interviews scheduled.
  • 3/15 How did those interviews go? I was contacted by this school today to send in supporting materials.
  • They made an offer to at least one candidate. Not sure if all three finalists declined the offer or if only one or two were acceptable to them. But it looks like they are trying to go back to the original pool to reconsider some more candidates now. They are very nice. A decent school to work for if you don't mind its location.
  • I second that the school would be a great place to work. The faculty were wonderful and the interview process was the best I've had this year. The salary is not bad (a bit above average) and they have a good benefits package. The downsides are location and lack of available work for a spouse/partner if you're considering moving there with a family.
  • Thanks for those two perspectives-Campus interview (round two) scheduled for late April.
  • Did someone accept the offer the second time around?
  • At least once recent offer declined.

  • 3/15 They've been listening to my recordings lately.
  • Hmm... interesting... Did they tell you that?
  • Actually, it says in the job description that recordings should be submitted with the initial application. It's really interesting that they have let you know that they have been listening to your recordings without actually scheduling an interview with you..........
  • 3/15 (original poster): They have not informed me that they have listened to my recordings. It's called technology: I submit an individual YouTube playlist to every individual school I apply to, YouTube offers me analytics for individual videos and individual playlists, so I know when schools are viewing my videos (and how much time they spend). Someone asked if there has been any news, since deleted, so I just told them I knew they were at least going through recordings. For what it's worth: they've spent a lot more time listening than most schools.
  • There is an inside candidate--meaning they already know who they want.
  • Sometimes I wonder: what is the point of advertising a job at all if you already know who you want? It takes a lot of time and resources on the part of the School, and it wastes time and resources on the part of the applicants..
  • It's the law--they have to advertise. But, I completely agree that it would have been much easier for everybody if they didn't advertise at all. The system is corrupt.
  • Who cares about the University of Lethbridge anyway?! It is a crappy music school in an even crappier town. Just look who teaches there! It is in the middle of nowhere. I feel sorry for the poor music students who think they can get a job with a degree from the University of Lethbridge!! Good luck!
  • An "inside candidate" is just that - a CANDIDATE that they have known. That's all - it certainly COULD mean that they would hire him/her, but I've heard of many cases where the internal candidates didn't end up getting the job. It's pretty much 50-50 at the end of the day. If you're interested in the job, apply. Practially every job these days has some kind of an internal candidate. If you let that deter you, you will never get a job!
  • Ok. Let's say it's 50-50 percent chance that an "inside" candidate will get the job. That means that that one person ("inside" candidate) has a 50 percent chance of getting the job. That also means that all those other "outside" candidates altogether have 50 percent chance of getting the job. I would imagine for this kind of job there are at least a hundred candidates. Following your logic, each of those "outside" candidates will have a 0.5 percent chance of getting the job. While the "inside" candidate will have a 49.5 percent advantage. I guess it's  pretty clear who has a better chance of getting the job in that case. Not to mention, that by "inside" candidate I dont't mean just somebody they know but a candidate that the committee wants to hire before they even do the search. In most cases the "inside" candidate is already working at the school, and, unless he catastrophically screws up or is hated by all the faculty, he will get the job. There are plenty of people at the Unviersity of Lethbridge teaching piano right now. All of them are "pianists/teachers you have never heard of." I am not saying that any of them will end up getting the job, but they cannot let anybody who has even a slighlty higher profile than them to join the faculty.  You can apply for any jobs you want, but life is so much more than submitting countless job applications.

University of Memphis: Assistant Professor of Music - Piano (Deadline: 01 December 2015 / Open until filled)[]

  • The University of Memphis invites applications for the following nine-month, tenure track position in the Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music beginning August, 2016.
  • Duties may include applied piano instruction and chamber music coaching on the undergraduate and graduate levels; coordinating the collaborative piano program; teaching piano pedagogy and piano literature courses; collaborating with faculty and guest artists; active recruiting of students; and maintaining a performing career outside of the university. Service on Committees at the School of Music, College, and University levels, is expected, as well as other duties as required. Applicants with additional areas of expertise and interest are encouraged to apply.
  • Minimum Position Qualifications: Masters in piano performance is required; a doctorate and university teaching experience are desired. The successful candidate should be an outstanding performer in solo and collaborative repertoire with a national and/or international reputation, and the ability to recruit high-level students.
  • Applications may be submitted at http://workforum.memphis.edu. Additional items required at time of application include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, unofficial transcript, statement of teaching philosophy, a list of three (3) references with contact information (address, telephone number, and e-mail address), and a document listing online links to live video and audio performances in solo and collaborative repertoire, and links to videos of teaching if available.
  • Do not send additional or supplemental information at this time. Review of applications will begin December 1st, 2015, and may continue until a successful candidate is named.
  • Recent Summer 2015 hire with STRONG possibility to move into the permanent position - internal candidate alert! Eric Zuber...
  • We could have this conversation endlessly...Eric Zuber is an excellent and accomplished pianist who earned his position in a search last year. Maybe he'll have worked hard in his temporary position and already earned his rehire. Maybe he'll have angered everyone and already worked his way out of a job. There's no alert necessary, apply to this job if it's of interested to you; if not, don't.
    • Yes, he's an excellent and accomplished pianist, but....is he a WONDERFUL pianist?
  • Who knows? I heard Eric Zuber was a last minute temporary hire in the late Summer with no real 'search,' so doesn't mean he's an internal candidate, if he has only been there for a few months. Zuber's competition background looks great, but who knows about his teaching. He'll be applying for every available job if he's now in a temp position with no guarantees, and it all chance what works out first.
  • Nevertheless, I would say Zuber is a strong candidate.
  • Even if he is a strong candidate, there will be so many applicants for a position like this, so there will be a lot of competition. It's a piano teaching/chamber music job, maybe with Piano Ped or Piano Lit, and all in a big enough city that has everything. What's not to like?
  • It's no longer available, they must have closed it while reviewing
  • Request for further materials on 12/16  x4
  • Contacted references by phone this week 1/23
  • May I ask how you know that your references have been contacted? Not just for this job for generally, when a search committee contacts candidates' references, do they tell the candidates in advance? Or did you find out from your references that they were called? Thank you for considering sharing that information!
  • When my references were contacted, my references sent me an email to say that they were contacted, and gave me some info on what they were asked. No, the search committee didn't contact me before, I think that's probably normal.
  • On-campus interviews this week
  • Any news yet?
  • Congratulations to Dr. Artina McCain!

  • Anybody know if this is a real search? It closed so quickly. Internal?
  • A couple of things to think about here: 1/ If it had been earlier in the season and the job closed so quickly, it might have been a fake search. But being that it's already the summer, it might be justifiable and might not be fake after all. 2/ This is essentially, I believe, the job that the professor who is leaving for Georgia College left behind. He got the job at Georgia College MONTHS ago, so either he waited to resign in order to keep his benefits for longer, or the university is having financial difficulty filling the position and took a while for approval. The public university system in Wisconsin is known to be having financial cuts in the last few years, so perhaps when he resigned, they weren't even sure that they wouldn't lose the line. 3/ The financial difficulty might also explain why this position is actually an 80% position - meaning "less than full-time." Essentially, at 80%, you can't really have much of another job, yet they might or might not have to cover full benefits. So, is this really that great a job to get anyway? If you already live in Wisconsin, I'd say go for it. But to have to relocate to take a less-than-full-time position, I'm not sure.
  • I know for certain that by early spring they were not going to fill the position at all (presumably due to the U-W system's financial issues). Then things must have shifted such that they were able to get something, just not the same tenure line. It's quick because they want someone in place, but it is a legitimate search.
  • This is not an internal search. It is .80 staff (not full-time faculty) position, which is probably all the department was given this year to replace the professor that resigned for another job. And while that professor may have resigned months ago, administrators love to move at a glacial pace when approving anything.

Schools with Failed or Canceled Searches[]

Application and Interview Procedures[]

  • So, you have a doctoral degree in piano and are interested in teaching at a college or university?  Awesome!  Here is a short guide to applying for piano jobs:
  1. After reading the posting on CMS/HigherEd Jobs/The Chronicle, go to the school's music website.  Is there a Visiting Assistant Professor listed?  If so, this is possibly a pro forma search, whereupon you should skip directly to #11 on this list.  If you decide to try to unseat the internal or if it's a "clean" opening, proceed to #2.
  2. Prepare your CV, Cover Letter, Teaching Philosophy, and List of References.  Additionally, prepare a list of sample recordings in increments of 20-60 minutes, but do not submit this unless initially requested in the application procedures.  Your cover letter should address the following areas: your experience in higher education, a brief discussion of student success and recruitment, an overview of your professional performance/research profile, and why you are interested in this particular position.  If you've never had a job in higher education, outlay your recruitment strategy and play up other areas of your professional experience.  Finally, make sure to include the correct name and contact info of the school to which you're applying.  If you accidentally didn't swap out the information in your Cover Letter from another application and submitted your materials anyway, skip to #11.  If everything was correct in your materials (grammatically and otherwise), proceed to #3.
  3. Welcome to Purgatory!  Depending on the closing date and the number of applications, it's possible that you might not hear from the search committee anywhere from a few weeks to several months.  If the search committee contacts you, proceed to #4.  If not, skip to #11.
  4. Congratulations - you passed the paper round!  The search committee would like to hear samples of your performances!  Remember that list from #2?  Make sure that whatever you select is of high quality and has all the bases covered: a concerto, a few solos, and some collaborative/chamber playing.  Keep in mind that some search committee members might have strong prejudices about repertoire and could vote against you based solely on what you submitted rather than how you play it (it sucks, but it happens).  Thus, while your recordings should contain at least one non-standard selection, try to balance it with more canonic repertoire to assuage their fears that you have a personality. If the majority of the committee likes your playing, proceed to #5.  If not, skip to #11.
  5. Woot woot!  The search committee likes your playing enough to tolerate the sound of your voice!  Let's set up a phone interview!  Be prepared to verbalize your CV, teaching philosophy, recruitment strategy, and explain to the committee why, precisely, you want to teach in rural Montana.  The goal here is to see who can answer questions simply, directly, and with as little fluff as possible.  Don't quote Enlightenment philosophers; cite specific experiences and relate them to your strategy of building a piano program. The committee will typically ask if you have any questions for them, so have one or two. Proceed to #6.
  6. We're getting close to meeting people up close and personal!  Hooray!  Here's where it gets fun - the upper administration makes the final decision on which candidates to invite to campus, so even if you did everything correctly up until this point, it is quite possible that you won't be approved for a campus interview based on any number of insane factors ranging from where you went to school (some universities are against having too many people from one school on their faculty) to the fact that you only won the Bronze Medal, and not the Gold, in the Leeds Competition (bummer).  If you're approved for a campus interview, proceed to #7.  If not...well, you know where to go by now.
  7. YOU MADE IT TO CAMPUS!  This is truly an accomplishment these days - in a sea of overqualified candidates, making it to the finals of any job is a great sign of your career prospects.  At this point, there is one simple requirement to getting an offer: don't screw up.  Before we deal with what to deal with next, here's a sucker punch that most people don't expect: it's possible that the school will ask that you pay for your own travel expenses to the interview.  Unfortunately, many universities are limiting their travel budgets for searches and instead ask the candidate to purchase their own airfare with the promise of reimbursement (which may or may not happen - check the "Universities to Fear" page for the most up-to-date horror stories).  SOOOOOOO, after submitting your application, recordings, doing a phone interview, and paying anywhere from $500-$1000 of interview costs, it's time to get real.  When you finally get to show them your pearly whites in person, be prepared to do the following things:
    • Perform a recital of 20-45 minutes in length (some bigger schools might ask for an hour, although this is a relatively rare request).  If you're applying for jobs, you should have a program ready to go during the interview season of late January-mid April.  Ideally, play something that was not on your recording list to show the breadth of your repertoire.  Make sure that you do NOT go over the requested amount of time, as it is possible that someone might vote against you for not adhering to the interview guidelines.  Concerning programming, play what you play well and have played many times before - this is not a situation where you want to try out new repertoire for the first time unless you like living dangerously.  Some schools might also request that you play a collaborative selection with a member of their faculty.  Never played the Prokofiev Flute Sonata?  GET PRACTICING!
    • Teach a masterclass for 2-3 students.  Pick your battles carefully when working with a student.  If someone needs help with their technique, address that; if someone doesn't know the background of the piece, talk about the historical context and/or style and work it into your comments.  Show that you are capable of addressing a wide range of problems and that you only scream at people when necessary (i.e., most of the time).
    • Interview with the committee, the department chair/director, and the Dean.  With the committee, the questions will mostly deal with issues such as recruiting, working collegially with others ("Approximately how many lunches do you steal from the faculty fridge per week?"), and other nuts-and-bolts things.  With the upper administration, be prepared to discuss the more broad aspects of the position, such as community involvement, your multi-year plan, and your thoughts on the school's mission statement.  Some of these interviews might happen over meals, at which point you get to answer questions while everyone else enjoys a Grilled Chicken Southwestern Wrap.  If it takes place over dinner, try not to get TOO drunk, okay?
    • Teach a class in a related area, such as piano pedagogy, chamber music/accompanying, history, or theory (if the position includes such duties).  They might give you a topic in advance.  If not, prepare a scholarly handout (avoid Wingdings font) and make sure that you engage the class as much as you lecture.
    • Generally speaking, be positive, make eye contact, and give direct answers to their questions.  Assuming that there is no internal, the big thing everyone is trying to figure out with finalists is whether or not they can work with you on a day-to-day basis.  Again, check off as many boxes as you can: no memory lapses in the recital, no students crying in the master class, no dumb jokes with the Dean, and don't throw a drink in anyone's face during dinner unless they deserve it.
  8. You're done!  Congratulations on making it through this unbelievably degrading process! Go back to step #3, as it might be a few weeks before you hear any news.  If you get an offer, #9 is your next stop.  If not, keep going south.
  9. "I GOT THE JOB?!???!!?!?  HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?!?!?!"  Well, you must have done SOMETHING right, because you beat out a highly qualified pool of sometimes as many as 200 applicants.  High fives!  Your negotiating power on salary, tenure, and other matters will depend on several things: whether you already have a job, how much they liked you, and if they see you as a long-term prospect.  If this is your first job, you'll likely have to take what they offer unless you can provide a compelling reason why you deserve a $10K travel budget.  If you're coming from another job, some schools will match your time towards tenure or kick you to the back of the line and make you start over.  Ultimately, it all depends on the institution.  Consider this the final test in the process - how you negotiate gives an administrator an idea of your overall collegiality, and pushing too hard might make them rescind their offer and extend it to another candidate.  If you and the administration come to an agreement on salary and other aspects, congratulations!  You're done!  Now, sit back and chill for a few years until someone retires from Eastman, whereupon you may proceed directly to #1.  In the meantime, head to a hard-earned and much-deserved #11.
  10. "WHAT WENT WRONG?????????" If you didn't get the job and everything went well, who knows what happened.  It really could be anything - someone was mad that you didn't take the repeats in your Beethoven, the outfit you wore was scandalous, or the Dean was annoyed that you didn't have enough fundrasing experience.  If there was an internal candidate, at least you got to see how the process works and had a chance at running through everything for a clean search.  Making it to the finals of a job is no small feat, so chin up and get ready for the next one.  Also, #11 is your friend.
  11. Have some Chopin.
