Open Searches: Full-Time / Tenure-Track Positions in Physical Anthropology

Rollins College (FL) - Medical (and Biological) Anthropology - Deadline: 1 Oct. 2015

The Department of Anthropology at Rollins College has an opportunity for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Medical Anthropology position beginning in August 2016. We seek those whose area of research expertise is medical anthropology. Applicants with additional expertise in biological anthropology are welcome to apply. You must be committed to excellent undergraduate teaching, as well as to the liberal arts, and interested in maintaining an active program of research and publication.

The position requires teaching three courses per semester, and you must be able to teach courses on epidemiology, public health, and global health, among others. Applicants should also be willing to help build Rollins growing Global Health program.

We seek applicants who share our commitment to community engagement and who can integrate it into their teaching and scholarship and create field opportunities for students. While geographical area of specialization is open, applicants whose research interests are in Africa or Asia are especially encouraged to apply.

Applicants must have PhD in hand by June 1, 2016. Teaching experience is preferred.

San Diego State University (CA) - TT Asst. Professor - Biological Anthropology - Deadline: 15 Sept. 2015

The Department of Anthropology at San Diego State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Biological Anthropology, beginning Fall 2016.

Candidates should have teaching experience and an active research program in biocultural approaches to human biology. Potential areas of specialization include, but are not limited to: developmental origins of health and disease (DOHaD), life history and nutrition, the microbiome, human plasticity (developmental plasticity, neuroplasticity, epigenetics), human sexuality and reproduction, and human adaptability. We are particularly interested in individuals who conduct field-based, interdisciplinary research integrating biological data within an ecological and social context. The successful applicant will show a strong record of research, publication, and the potential to obtain external funding. Geographic area is open.

Candidates should be prepared to teach undergraduate and graduate courses as required by the department, develop courses within their own areas of specialization, and mentor M.A. students. Our department strongly encourages a four-field approach to anthropology and the engagement of undergraduate and graduate students in on-going research. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Anthropology at the time of appointment.

University of California, Santa Cruz (CA) - TT Assistant Professor, Biological/Physical Anthropology - Deadline: 15 Sept. 2015

The Department of Anthropology at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a tenure-track position in Biological/Physical Anthropology, at the assistant professor level beginning July 1, 2016. The department prefers scholars focusing on human ecology, whose work speaks to our interests in human diet, health, and disease in pre-historic, historic, and contemporary populations, as well as the longue durée of human migration and environmental change and adaptation. A researcher specializing in modern methodological and technological approaches to these questions e.g. with a research focus on bone stable isotopes, trace elements, proteomics or microbiome genomics would be a particularly good fit for our department and the UCSC research community. We especially want to encourage individuals to apply that are willing to contribute to the interdisciplinary dialog between the anthropological subfields and other disciplines found on campus.

Active research projects with the potential for involving graduate students would be crucial to this position. The successful candidate will contribute to our emerging biological anthropology subfield and must demonstrate a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and mentoring. The campus is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through their research, teaching and/or service.

Open Searches: Anatomy Positions

Assistant and Associate Professor in Gross Anatomy and Embryology, Touro University Nevada:  deadline: 31 August 2015

Touro University Nevada College of Osteopathic Medicine is seeking candidates for two full time faculty positions in Gross Anatomy and Embryology for its Department of Basic Sciences, one at the Assistant and one at the Associate Professor level. These positions are 12 month appointments with primary teaching responsibilities and opportunities to conduct original research/scholarly activities.

Broad Responsibilities: Successful candidates will be responsible for teaching gross anatomy/embryology in Touro University Nevada’s Osteopathic Medicine and Allied Health Programs (Occupational Therapy(OT), Physician Assistant (PA), Physical Therapy (PT), Master of Medical Health Sciences (MHS)) as required. Faculty members are encouraged to conduct original research/scholarly activities and pursue extramural funding in their areas of interest. All Department of Basic Sciences Faculty are expected to contribute to institutional service activities. Other duties will be assigned as necessary.

Specific Responsibilities: The major responsibilities of Anatomy and Embryology faculty, include the following: • Provide lectures and dissection based laboratories in gross anatomy for DO, PA and other Allied Health students • Provide lectures and laboratories in embryology for DO and Allied Health students • Oversee/perform prosections for courses in anatomy.

Minimum Requirements: • Candidates should have substantial teaching experience in cadaver based Gross Anatomy and Embryology courses. • US citizenship or permanent residency is required. • An advanced degree in health related sciences (M.D., Ph.D., D.O.) • Evidence of productivity in research or other scholarly activities

Preference will be given to candidates with: • Substantial teaching experience in anatomy and embryology • Experience in teaching osteopathic medical, allied health and graduate students • An exemplary record of research, extramural funding, and publication

Core Competencies: • Teaching gross anatomy at a medical school level with an emphasis on clinical correlations • Teaching embryology at a medical school level • Practical knowledge of teaching both dissection and prosection courses in anatomy • Teaching gross anatomy to allied health students (OT, PT)

Assistant/Associate Professor, Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine at New Mexico State University deadline: 1 October 2015

The Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine (BCOM) at New Mexico State University, one of the nation’s newest and most innovative medical schools, located in beautiful Las Cruces, New Mexico, invites applications for multiple full-time, 12-month faculty positions in the Pre-Clinical Science Departments. BCOM’s inaugural class will matriculate in August, 2016, and the College is seeking to identify and hire energetic, dedicated individuals with strong pedagogical versatility, a passion for teaching and mentoring in the indicated biomedical science disciplines, and a deep commitment to medical education. 

Available Positions: The Department of Anatomy & Cell Biology seeks to fill three (3) faculty positions in the Anatomical disciplines of Gross Anatomy, Neuroanatomy, Histology, and/or Embryology (2 positions with cross-over capability), and in Cell Biology (1 position). The Department of Biomedical Sciences seeks four (4) medical educators in the fields of Immunology (1 position), Biochemistry (1 position), and Pharmacology (2 positions). The Department of Physiology & Pathology seeks six (6) medical educators positions in the field of Physiology (3 positions) and Pathology (3 positions).

The College’s mission is to improve health education and healthcare in Southern New Mexico, and throughout the Southwestern US by increasing the number of physicians trained in this region. Teaching is the primary focus of our faculty. The College plans to implement a spiral, systems-based curriculum that will integrate disciplines, and will incorporate interactive methodologies and an androgogical teaching philosophy. The College will encourage student learning in a humanistic environment, and convey promote patient-centered, evidence-based medical care of the highest quality, in a manner consistent with these core values. 

Successful candidates will function as member of a collaborative teaching team to develop and deliver their instructional content within an integrated curriculum. Primary responsibilities will involve teaching medical students through the systems-based courses of the 1st and 2nd academic years, and will involve the development of collaboratively designed, and highly integrated curricular elements. Additional teaching responsibilities students may exist in the 3rd and 4th years of the curriculum, and will focus on the application of foundational scientific knowledge to clinical settings. Service to the College and the community will also be an essential function of the position, including committee membership, faculty development, student advising, interviewing prospective students, and community outreach. Additionally, evidence of scholarly activity with a record of publication and productivity, are preferred and valued credentials in prospective candidates.

Minimum Qualifications: • Terminal degree (PhD, DO, MD, or other) in the pre-clinical sciences. • Evidence of commitment to teaching foundational science in a medical school setting. • Evidence of, and the potential for growth in, teaching, scholarly activity and service. • Post-doctoral experience will strengthen the candidate’s application.

Preferred Qualifications: • Additional training or experience in educational theory and/or evaluation. • A substantial record of success as an educator with experience in teaching foundational concepts which are relevant to medical education. • Experience using innovative teaching methods which might include team-based learning, ‘flipped classroom’, problem-based learning, distance learning, interactive large group presentation, audience response systems, curriculum delivery systems (e.g. Blackboard), and proficiency in exam item writing (USMLE and/or COMLEX-style). • Experience with curricular and instructional design.

Specific Faculty Responsibilities: • Approximately 70% time and effort devoted to delivering instruction in first and second year medical student curriculum and to providing service (committee responsibilities, student mentoring, interviewing, etc.) to the institution. • Work collaboratively with other faculty members to develop the integrated and interdisciplinary medical curriculum (1st and 2nd year). • Supervise, advise, and mentor medical students through the curriculum. • Serve as student advisors and mentor • Approximately 30% time and effort devoted to scholarly activity:  Participate in institutional and departmental educational research activities including study design, data generation and analysis, manuscript preparation and submission.  Develop an independent program of scholarly endeavor (basic, translational, clinical, or educational research; educational materials/programs development, etc.).  Provide supervision and evaluation of medical students and their scholarly projects. • Develop and prepare teaching materials (presentations, lectures, exam items, etc.). • Serve on departmental and institutional committees and task forces. • Demonstrate professionalism as defined by the BCOM declaration of faculty professionalism and responsibility.

These full-time, 12-month positions have start dates ranging from January 1 to April 1, 2016. The positions are fully funded educational appointments reporting directly to the Chair of the respective Department administering the position. BCOM offers a competitive salary and benefits package, commensurate with appointed faculty rank, qualifications, and experience.
