Arizona State University (AZ) - Evolutionary Medicine - two positions, assistant or associate - Dec 1st

Arizona State University is making a major commitment to developing the field of Evolutionary Medicine. There are plans to recruit up to eight faculty members for the new interdisciplinary Center for Evolution & Medicine, headed by Dr. Randolph Nesse.

The Center and the School of Human Evolution and Social Change invite applications for up to two tenure-eligible faculty positions in a transformative research and teaching initiative that will establish evolutionary biology as a crucial basic science for medicine and public health. Appointment may be at the assistant or associate level. Rank and tenure status will be commensurate with experience. Research areas may include topical focus on the implications for health of one or more of the following: diet/metabolism, the developmental origins of human disease, behavior, reproduction/development, environmental exposures, life history, and ecological conditions in small scale societies. These topics can be in reference to current and past epidemics and/or diseases of modern environments.

Minimum qualifications include a M.D., Ph.D., or equivalent in anthropology, human/evolutionary biology, genetics, epidemiology, demography, or related field; demonstrated readiness to teach undergraduate social science and/or global health courses; and capacity to operate effectively in a collaborative, transdisciplinary research environment. For assistant rank candidates, we require evidence of potential for high levels of research productivity and impact, as well as for teaching excellence. For associate rank candidates, research of outstanding quality and international impact, success in obtaining external funding, and evidence of teaching excellence are required.

Desired qualifications for all candidates include experience mentoring and supporting students, and a strong record of field, laboratory, and/or model-based research.

The School of Human Evolution and Social Change, Arizona State University invites applications for Assistant Professor with an anticipated start date of August 2015. The School intends to hire up to two candidates as we continue to expand our world-class program in evolutionary social science. We seek applicants with exceptional scholarly potential in advancing understandings of the dynamic interactions between biology and culture responsible for human uniqueness. The California State University, Northridge Department of Anthropology seeks to hire a 3-field-trained (archaeology, biological, socio-cultural) anthropologist who studies the interface of culture and human biology in either modern or archaeological human populations. Specific areas of interest can include: some aspect of human biocultural evolution; biocultural adaptation to environmental or culture change; the causes and consequences of disease or physical violence in ancient or modern populations; past or contemporary patterns of health, nutrition, diet, and/or reproduction. Geographic area of research is open, but preference will be given to candidates who work in the Americas. The successful candidate will complement or enhance the existing strengths of the program, support the three-field emphases of our B.A. and M.A. programs, and be able to teach some or all of the following: Introduction to Archaeology and/or Physical Anthropology; Human Variation; Medical Anthropology; Applied Anthropology; Quantitative Methods; Archaeological and/or Biological Theory; Anthropological Methods; undergraduate and graduate seminars in Archaeology or Biological Anthropology; as well as develop new courses in their specific area of specialization.

Central Washington University (WA) - Biological Anthropologist - Nov. 1

Job Summary: The Department of Anthropology and Museum Studies, in the College of the Sciences at Central Washington University, invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track biological anthropologist at the assistant professor level. The successful candidate will have expertise in paleoanthropology and/or human osteology. The new faculty member will participate in an interdisciplinary Forensics Certificate program currently under development. College of New Jersey (NJ) - Biological Anthropology - review begins Oct. 1 - SKYPE INTERVIEWS SCHEDULED

The Sociology & Anthropology Department at the College of New Jersey (TCNJ) invites applications for a tenure-track appointment in biological anthropology at the Assistant Professor rank, to commence in Fall 2015. A Ph.D. is required by the time of appointment. We are seeking a teacher-scholar committed to undergraduate liberal arts education with an active research program in the health of modern humans. Any geographic focus is welcome. Successful candidates will be able to teach Introduction to Physical Anthropology and Human Evolution, and will develop courses related to health and human biology. We welcome a colleague whose research and teaching combines biological research and attention to human inequality. This hire will join a small but growing anthropology program that supports a rapidly expanding Public Health minor popular with pre-Med students. The hire will create courses in biological/physical anthropology that would complement our existing strengths in cultural anthropology, in preparation for launching a new anthropology major. I've heard they might be kind of unrealistic like some of the other Ivies. Being a private Ivy, I doubt they release transparent data on tenure rates. (x2)
For what it is worth I believe this is a replacement hire for a faculty member who was denied tenure
It also might be worth knowing that they have twice, in the last 4 years, hired associate professors (bioanth in 2010, archaeology in 2011) even though they explicitly advertised for positions at the assistant professor level.

9/10: Submitted by the 1st, then today got an email from Interfolio asking me to fill out a 'General Applicant Information' form which basically is a summary of cover letter info (name, date of degree, diss title, sig pub, areas of interest, names and institutions of references). Kind of tacky to make the candidates resummarize themselves in this way after submission of full apps...

Indiana University Bloomington (IN) - Assistant Professor in Biological Anthropology/Human Biology - Nov. 1 - REFERENCES CONTACTED

The Department of Anthropology at Indiana University Bloomington seeks to hire a biological anthropologist at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure track) to start August 2015 with PhD in hand. This hire will be shared with the undergraduate interdisciplinary Human Biology program, with teaching responsibilities split equally between the two units. We are particularly interested in a scholar with an active laboratory and/or field-based research program in human biology (broadly defined to include molecules to morphology to behavior, and from the past to the present) that is informed by evolutionary theory and that addresses questions of broad anthropological significance. The Department of Anthropology at University of Massachusetts seeks a Biological Anthropologist with a research focus in primatology, at the Assistant Professor level starting Fall 2015. The Wright State University Department of Sociology and Anthropology is accepting applications for an Instructor of Biological Anthropology to start August 2015 (with the likelihood of paid course-specific training to begin in July, 2015). The ideal candidate will be a biological anthropologist with demonstrated excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level. The successful candidate will teach an established and popular introductory biological anthropology course and several sections of weekly labs. Wright State follows a semester system and this position will include teaching 2 lecture sections and 9 lab sections per academic year. Some opportunities for summer teaching may also be available.

University of Calgary - Postdoctoral Scholar in Primatology - ASAP

We seek a Postdoctoral Scholar for a two-year position to begin in early 2015. The position is funded by the University of Calgary, the Department of Anthropology and Archaeology, and grant funds from the main supervisor, Dr. Linda Fedigan. The Department of Anthropology and Archaeology is the home of four full-time faculty primatologists and their research teams with long-term field projects in Belize, Costa Rica, Ghana and Madagascar. Our collaborative objective is to create synergies and new insights from comparative analyses of our datasets. To that end, we have developed an integrated database as part of the PACE project (Primates Adapting to Changing Environments). PACE currently includes long-term data on three primate species (with three more species datasets shortly to be integrated) and is comprised of behavioural, ecological, demographic, genetic, nutritional and spatial data. It is both an online database and a physical space with computers, software and data storage devices, including a collection of satellite imagery for our field sites. We seek a scholar with expertise in one or more of these areas: behavioural, social, spatial and/or reproductive ecology; life history and demography; primate (including human) adaptability in changing environments. The postdoctoral fellow should have a strong interest in collaborative research and cross-specific, comparative studies. They will be given access to the PACE database and encouraged to develop collaborative publications based on the PACE data (and their own data if available), to mentor graduate students and to organize workshops relevant to areas of overlapping interest areas.

The salary is $50,000CDN per year, plus funds to cover extended health care and some relocation/travel/conference expenses that will be detailed in the offer letter. There are no citizenship requirements but the applicant must hold a PhD or equivalent and be within five years of being awarded the PhD. They must also have a strong publication record, evidence of good analytical and quantitative skills, a history of grant/scholarship success and some experience with relational databases.

University of Missouri - Postdoctoral Scholar in Evolutionary Anthropology - ASAP

The Department of Anthropology at the University of Missouri invites applications for a postdoctoral fellow in scientific and/or evolutionary anthropology. A Running List of Schools Violating AAA Career Center Request

The AAA has requested that search committees refrain from asking for letters of recommendation until initial screening of applicants has been completed:

"Solicitation of letters of recommendation should occur only after an initial screening of candidates to minimize inconvenience to applicants and referees. Names of references may be requested, however."

Despite this (at least three year-old request), many institutions persist in requiring letters of recommendation as part of an initial application package. This places a burden on both the applicant and his/her reviewers and places undue stress on advisor/advisee relationships.
