  • I went to submit through the online system on Nov 3, but it was only after answering 9 (!) supplementary short answer questions, that the system prompted me to upload the following documents. There's no description of this requirement anywhere. Anyone else think this is strange? I feel blindsided.

  • Yep -- totally wasn't sure what to expect when it told me not to begin the supplemental questions without having my docs ready, and then the next page was a bazillion required docs. Plus, I found it odd that they didn't tell you beforehand that you had a 1200 character limit on your answers to the supplemental questions.

    • So I realize, reading this, that I never received an acknowledgement of application received (I applied on 9/12).     • The acknowledgement did not contain any detail. The rejection only stated that the committee had received "hundreds of very impressive applications." It seems like this is a rolling process, so this is one of those cases in which no news is actually no news. 
    • The acknowledgement I rec'd said something like "we have received your application, and will give it full consideration, etc." and I got it a day or two after submitting the application. The rejection email mentioned the "hundreds of impressive applications."

• Is it just me, or did they not specify what they want included in the application?

• It isn't just you. There are a number of drop-down options for uploading documents at the conclusion of the web-based application, but no indication of expectations for this particular position. Some are plainly irrelevant. Others, including  "Other," could go either way. I've written to the department chair. I'll post once I get a response.

• What does that mean?

• It has seemed cordial to me (got my PhD from Columbia about five years ago), and Barnard students take CU classes and vice versa.  Barnard Profs also regularly serve on CU dissertation committies.  That said, Barnard profs do not (to my knowledge) advise PhDs or graduate students, nor do they have voting privileges on Columbia hires and the like.  And there's perhaps a bit of resentment among some Barnard profs, though certainly not all -- Barnard is a sweet gig, liberal arts but connected to a major research university in NYC.
