In 2013 they hired Gough as a VAP and he just switched over to a TT line (2 years later). In 2014 they ran a search for a VAP--that was Wells and his also turned into a TT line last fall. This job is NOT an inside hire...it is a completely new line that the College of Social Sciences granted to the history department this spring. Their department is growing, their MA program is growing, and they need additional TT faculty who can fill these needs. Perhaps people on this wiki should stop making assumptions and simply contact the department directly with such inquiries? (Full disclosure: the above comment comes from outside of the department, but from someone who is in regular contact with the department faculty.)

• So, "none of the above--is true," yet you admit that, in the past two years, two VAPs have been moved to tenure-track jobs within the department, at least one of whom had to formally reapply. I'm sorry, but if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck...
• The initial question was in regard to the status of the job listing and to whether or not this was to be an "inside hire". I attempted, with my knowledge of the department, to dispel any incorrect assumptions that this position was listed for someone who is already on faculty at UNK. It is not an inside hire. This is a small school, and funding for new lines is not always consistent--especially for the humanities and social sciences. The growth of history majors and the History M.A. program called for new faculty positions, and yes--the demand for American history and American Western history is high.  Perhaps if you have specific questions about the integrity of the department, the job listing, salaries, corporate welfare and tax breaks, or Nebraska's "anti-government red state" status, you should call the department chair and he/she can answer them directly. Otherwise, I'm not exactly sure what you are asserting about this job posting. The original question asked about inside hires, which I addressed in my above posting. I hope that this helped answer any inquiries to the potential applicants who considered applying for the job.

• It has seemed cordial to me (got my PhD from Columbia about five years ago), and Barnard students take CU classes and vice versa.  Barnard Profs also regularly serve on CU dissertation committies.  That said, Barnard profs do not (to my knowledge) advise PhDs or graduate students, nor do they have voting privileges on Columbia hires and the like.  And there's perhaps a bit of resentment among some Barnard profs, though certainly not all -- Barnard is a sweet gig, liberal arts but connected to a major research university in NYC.

• Hired their inside candidate. The fix was in on this one, folks. 145 applicants and they hire their VAP? Not to say he isn't qualified, but there's no way it was a fair process. It makes you wonder about the criteria they use to evaluate applications.
  • Meh, I don't think you can get offended at an inside hire. (1) It's too common to get offended; (2) If they already have someone they like and think fits the department, what's wrong with that?; (3) Unless you're very familiar with the inside candidate's research, teaching, and service, you shouldn't assume the person didn't deserve it. (4) When the "secondary" market starts know that some of those will turn into tenure track positions. Maybe one day you'll be the the inside candidate.
  • Inside candidates always have an upper hand, and no one said that this one wasn't a good fit. So why go through the charade of a national search? It's a burden on applicants that's both an emotional and financial burden. (X2)

• Don't contact the chair. Yes, it sucks, but the chair (like all of us) is probably trying to keep too many balls in the air at one time and made an honest mistake. We would all probably want search committees to cut us some slack for boneheaded errors. Plus you would absolutely torpedo your candidacy, and while I guess we're in competition with one another, I wouldn't want to let you hang yourself over that.
