The position will be associated with the research group working on modern political and economic history at the Department of Historical Studies. In its research, the group is especially focusing on the political economy of natural resources in a global perspective. A key aim is to develop systematic historical knowledge about the role of natural resources in economic and societal development. The Department hosts several research projects on natural resources, and the Onsager Fellow will thus be a part of a research team of 12-14 historians.
During the tenure track period of 6-7 years, the successful applicant will receive professional guidance, training and advice by mentors appointed by the faculty to build a successful academic career. In addition, the candidate will have no teaching load for the first year of employment. The candidate will be subject to a mid-career assessment after 3 years, and a final tenure assessment after no more than 6 years. It is expected that the candidate will qualify for a full professorship at the end of the tenure-track period.
Academic staff without a formal pedagogical qualification in university-level teaching, and who are unable to document equivalent qualifications, are required to successfully complete a recognized course that provides a pedagogical qualification in university-level teaching within two years of taking up the appointment. The university offers such courses. Newly employed academic staff who are not already fluent in a Scandinavian language must obtain knowledge of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language at an equivalent standard to level three in the "Norwegian for Foreigners" courses provided by the Department of Language and Literature. This must be done within three years following the appointment. The University will make it possible for the successful candidate to attend such courses.

The area of temporal or geographic specialization is open; the department is particularly interested in scholars whose research can engage with other historical fields of social and cultural history represented in the department, including but not limited to the social and cultural histories of race, gender and sexuality, indigeneity, colonialism, empire, capitalism, and migration. The committee is particularly interested in an Assistant Professor who will complement and built upon the expertise of the current members of the chair, notably in Dutch and European architectural and urban history, while also participating in collective research activities.
The Assistant Professor will teach classes in the fundamental courses in the Bachelor programme (in Dutch or English) on the longterm development of architectural and urban form(Grondslagen/Foundations I, II, III) and give focused lectures on specialised topics (in English) in the Master and PhD programmes according to his/her individual research interests. He/she will also supervise Master and PhD students
Applicants must have a proven background in architectural and/or urban history and a PhD degree in an appropriate discipline. The candidate is expected to have some teaching experience and be committed to research excellence, as demonstrated by academic publications. He/she has a demonstrated ability to initiate and direct research projects and to obtain external funding. The candidate possesses good communication and people skills and is capable of teaching at the university level. In addition, the candidate is expected to have an international profile with an active international network of scientific contacts. Demonstrated ability in written and spoken English is required. Knowledge of Dutch is welcome but not required at the start of the position
