Central Washington University, Assistant Professor of Music History (Deadline: 15 October 2014)

  • The Department of Music at Central Washington University seeks an outstanding teacher of Music History for a tenure-track (assistant professor), nine- month faculty position.
  • The duties for this position include teaching music history classes for music majors at the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as related general education classes suited to CWU’s liberal arts mission. The ideal candidate is an individual who is an outstanding teacher, passionate about music history and literature at all academic levels, and enjoys working collaboratively in a department that values teaching excellence, student learning, scholarship, and service to the department, college, university, community, and profession. The teacher-scholar model is paramount at CWU; therefore, teaching, research/creative activity, and service is expected of all department faculty. We seek candidates with strong written and verbal communication skills and demonstrated potential to contribute effectively to the department, the university, the community, and the profession.
  • Required Qualifications:
  • PhD or related terminal degree with clear specialization in Music History or Historical Musicology. ABD will be considered; however, the terminal degree must be completed by September 16, 2015.

  • Names, addresses, telephone numbers, and email addresses of at least three references.
  • Additional materials and references may be requested, but please do not send materials until asked to do so.
  • Finalists will be required to submit official transcripts.
  • 10/14/14: This job asks for a URL for an uploaded teaching video--does anyone know of a video hosting service that can keep the videos more or less private, out of concern for copyrighted material and my students' privacy? It'd be great if I could also upload videos that are 30-45 mins for free.
    • Though I know others will take issue with this solution, Youtube does offer several privacy options when uploading videos. In the past, I have used the option of posting videos that are viewable to all, but are NOT searchable (so random webcrawlers won't happen upon your students' work). In other words, you can only watch them if someone sends you the full URL. I believe there are other options where viewers have to be approved by you. This is in no way an endorsement of Youtube's privacy policies (which I'm not an expert on), but it may be a quick and easy option - especially since the deadline is tomorrow!

  • FYI: This is likely an internal hire.
    • It couldn't really be more obvious.
    • I'd be careful assuming things from the outside. Sometimes someone appears to be the favored internal candidate and they don't get the gig. It happens all the time. It can't hurt to apply.
      • It happened the last time North Texas had a musicology search.
    • To say that "it happens all the time" is nice wishful thinking. Statistics from the last two years prove otherwise for this kind of searches: the internal candidate was hired every single time (in music history jobs, don't know about ethno).
  • I wish universities had a way to hire someone they want/already holds the position as a lecturer instead of having to stage a "search" to legitimize the appointment. It would save everybody who applies for these jobs precious time and energy.  x 2

Q: Does anybody know who is chairing the search committee?
Q: Sorry to seem silly, but is this position meant for someone whose primary field is "history" with interests in other sub-disciplines? Or would candidates whose primary field is not necessarily "history" but with intersecting skills be considered?
A1: My impression (just based on reading the description) is that they are using Music History and Historical Musicology interchangeably, rather than wanting someone who is primarily allied with a History, rather than a Music, department.
A2: It sounds to me that the question is not about "history" vs. "music history" but whether someone with, say, a degree in ethno would be considered if he/she has some interests in or experience with some historical topics. It sounds like they're looking for musicologists, but if you can make a case for yourself, well, why not? Might as well apply and let them decide, no?
+1. These are musicology positions. Look at who they are meant to replace. Look at who is on the faculty now. If you feel like you would be a nice complementary research fit (with broad-based humanistic inquiry as a central dimension of your work), and could lead musicology courses for undergraduate and graduate students, apply. If not, it's going to be more of a stretch, but if you can make the case, go for it.
  • 9/24/2014: Request for additional materials (writing sample, teaching statement) received (x6).
  • 10/13/2014: Invitation for campus interview.

  • The School of Music at the University of Washington is seeking a versatile, boundary-crossing scholar/musician with a broad specialization in American music for a full-time (100%, 9-month) tenure-track position, to begin in September 2015. Appointment will be made at the rank of Assistant Professor.
  • The individual selected will have the unique opportunity to play a critical role in developing and launching new degree programs in American Music Studies. Washington and Jefferson College: Assistant Professor of Music, non-tenure track (Deadline: 01 December 2014)

  • The Music Department of Washington and Jefferson College, a selective private liberal arts college in Washington, PA, seeks a music historian for a non-tenure track, renewable appointment. A related field in music business, music technology, or arts management is highly desirable. Keyboard skills are a strong asset. Outstanding teaching is a hallmark of the College and evidence of teaching ability is essential for consideration. W&J strongly encourages students to study abroad and also recruits students from around the world. As a result, the ability to work with an interesting and diverse student population is essential.
  • The department offers a B.A. in Music. In addition to providing music history courses for music majors and minors, the department supports the general education curriculum of the College through its classes and programming. This position will focus primarily on offering music history and literature courses in the Western canon. Additional teaching responsibilities may include developing new courses in the related field of study. Departmental and College service are expected. Research, publication, and other professional activities are strongly encouraged and supported.
  • Qualifications: Ph.D. or D.M.A. preferred, ABD considered. Teaching experience highly desirable.
  • Consideration of candidates will begin on 12/01/2014 and continue until the position is filled. Candidates are required to submit 1) a letter of application, 2) a short statement of their philosophy of teaching, 3) C.V., and 4) a list of three references. The letter of application should address the candidate's ability to contribute to the liberal arts mission of the College and ability to work effectively with a diverse student population. Applications should be sent to hr@washjeff.edu (Please type Assistant Professor Music in the subject line).
  • I have to protest. A "non-tenure track, renewable appointment" is not an Assistant Professorship. It's dishonest for W&J to say that it is.
    • Numerous (at least a few?) other institutions with NTT Assistant Professors, though, so not unheard of. (That is not to say that it's ideal in any way, though.)
    • Yes; there's no official standardization of these things, a school can call positions whatever they'd like. My institution (not W&J) extends "assistant professor" to include part-time non-renewable faculty, as long as they teach enough classes to receive benefits.

  • Wiki Running Slow?? Has anyone else noticed this year's Wiki causing serious lags in their web browser? Or is my computer just getting old? 10-18-14 - I've noticed this too. And the updates aren't loading at the top of the page, either. 10-22-14
