How many of the 200 applicants are serious contenders?
There were 200 applications for this position?! Why do you ask?

The email said there were 200 applicants. Are there that many medievalists on the market? If so, I want to know what people are doing right to get SCs to look at their material.

Wow! I think they're...working with strange statistics. There absolutely are not 200 medievalists out on the market this year - even those trying to move from positions they already hold. A couple of years ago, I got a solid statistic from a very good state school on the number of applications for a medieval position (no sub-specialty specified - just general medieval) - their total? 75. They might be doing multiple searches and tallying all the apps together.
The email said 200 applicants for their "tenure-track positions"--they were advertising in more than one field this year. I don't think that it meant 200 medievalists.
Yes; they're also seeking an Americanist.
Also, I believe they were looking for a VAP in American lit as well as TT candidate in Amer.

  • Greetings from the Americanist (20-21st c.) page. Any word yet? I ask because one candidate was contacted on 30 December, while others of us expected a later decision (one member of the committee was to be on holiday, etc.). Quite possibly there are two committees, though that was not my impression. Best wishes to you all, in and beyond this time of waiting.
