  • As a member of the search committee for this position, it has just come to our attention that our HR department here at TAMUCC sent a rather terse email to those not hired for this position very soon after the process moved from one stage to next stage. We are simply writing to apologize for the tone and timing of those auto-generated emails. We received many excellent applications and have tremendous respect for you all as colleagues within the profession. We had difficult decisions to make in determining the final candidate and the right fit for this position and the email that you received did not appropriately convey the respect that we have for you all. We wish you all the best in your job searches and hope that you accept our apologies for what we deem to be a rejection letter that is inconsistent with our appreciation for your application.

Please indicate in your cover letter if you will be presenting at the 2016 LSA Annual Meeting in Washington D.C.
    • LSA interview request (1/29)
      • LSA was Jan 7-10. How can they have an LSA interview on 1/29?
        • That's a very good question, particularly since their deadline wasn't until a week after LSA ended...
    • Skype Interview Request (2/10)
    • Campus Visit Invitation (2/19)

University of Toronto (Deadline: October 15, 2015)[]

  • Theoretical syntax, preferably with a secondary interest in fieldwork on an understudied language, corpora, or experimental work
  • Received rejection e-mail (Nov. 26th)
  • I have it on rather good authority that there is a preferred candidate for this search. (i.e. it is person X's job to lose) and for anyone tempted to censor or remove this: if I was a candidate for a search that was wholly or partially predetermined, I'd want to know
    • For the benefit of those perhaps directly involved, is it the general belief that X is someone already part of the department in a non-permanent capacity?
    • Unless op is on the search committee, I'm confident I have it on better authority that this search is not predetermined. The fact that the short list has four names, rather than UofT's usual three, suggests a real competition. I doubt the dean would allow an even partially predetermined search to have a four person shortlist. If history is any kind of blueprint for the future, go have a look at this page from 2012-2013. Someone made a similar suggestion of an inside candidate for the phonology position in this department and that person was not offered the position.
    • There are two internal candidates for this position, not one.

Yale University (Deadline: November 15, 2015)[]

  • Field: "area of specialization is open..., but we are particularly interested in candidates in phonetics/experimental phonology and semantics/pragmatics."
  • Department: Linguistics
  • Rank: Assistant or Associate Professor (not tenured)
  • URL: http://apply.interfolio.com/31809
  • NOTES:
  • Rejection via email (Dec. 11) (x5)
  • Skype + LSA interview request (Dec. 11)
  • Has anyone been contacted about a time for the LSA interview?
  • There's also a full professor job ad with the same disjunctive specialization. Does anyone know if these are two different jobs, or one opening at multiple possible levels?
  • Answer: This is Bob Frank, department chair in Linguistics at Yale.  These ads are for two different positions.  Note also that while the ad for the senior position is disjunctive between phonetics/experimental phonology and semantics/pragmatics, the junior ad explicitly welcomes applications from candiates in other areas of specialization.
  • Thank you, Bob. A question... If a candidate applies at the Associate (non-tenured) level, how long would the position last? Would it be a temporary position? Would the candidate be eligible to apply for tenure down the road?
  • A (from Bob again): this is most definitely NOT a temporary position, but rather a tenure track position, and we would certainly expect the candidate to come up for tenure. Yale has a tenure track system, though the tenure review takes place at a later point than at many other institutions. Specifically, tenure review usually takes place in the 8th year after initial appointment as Assistant Professor (there is an earlier promotion process to untenured Associate, which often takes place in the 5th year of the appointment, but can happen earlier).  For someone appointed directly as untenured Associate, there is a maximum (though most definitely not a minimum) of 7 years in that rank, which means that the promotion process would take place in the 6th year at the latest (modulo medical leaves and the like).
  • Rejection email received -- 12/11/2015
  • Notified I didn't make the short list for junior position -- 2/3/2016
  • Search concluded: an offer has been made and all candidates were notified. -- 4/29/2016
