• I may be wrong, but it seems like this school has had several "visitors" in a row. Are they just eliminating tenure-track hires in favor a series of visitors?
  • It's actually one of the really nice things about good liberal arts colleges like Wooster. When a faculty member goes on sabbatical, they generally hire a full-time replacement. Many other places either won't replace the person on sabbatical or will just hire a part-time adjunct. At Wooster and its peers, visiting professors are treated like real members of the department, and students also benefit from having someone who is around full-time and not running from one school to another. And to answer your question: I doubt that Wooster is eliminating tenure-track hires.
    • I have to agree. I am at a small, liberal arts school as a replacement, and I have been treated wonderfully, like any other member of the faculty cohort.

• I have no problem with this since I like to see dual PhD couples having a chance to be happy. In any case, Chicago already has Borges and doesn't need a second historian of Brazil. If every major US history department had two historians of Brazil, we would all be living in clover.
• I just hope that this creates an opportunity for someone at the soon to be former institution.
• Perhaps they need another historian working on Brazil, because the one they have published a book 20 years ago. If they hire another one, they can increase the average from 1 book in 20 years, to 1 book in 10 years !!!!
• Since the soon-to-be-former institution just hired a Latin Americanist a year ago, who knows if they'll get approval for another hire so soon? Regardless, this is something that everyone knows Chicago does, among its many other.... eccentricities. So I think the only surprise here was that it was so blatantly obvious. Though it's worth pointing out that the spouse being hired is a remarkably talented historian.
• Indeed, an excellent historian, and, seemingly, the star of the moment, since some assume the historian under discussion to be the #1 candidate for at least two other positions.
• I look forward to the unlikely day when I have to choose between Chicago, possibly Berkeley, and my own current excellent institution.
• I look forward to the day when there will be joint positions for the two or three existing so-called "stars" then they will be able to have 2 or 3 simultaneous positions, in Berkeley, Chicago, Harvard, and Princeton, in addition to a position for the partner, and guaranteed lifetime positions for their five children. The only problem here is that with so many moves, changes, house hunting, and blablabla, there is no time to do research and publish. But who cares, if folks can publish one book in their whole lives and be called "stars".
