Allegheny College (PA) - TT Open Rank - Global Health Studies[]

The interdisciplinary program in Global Health Studies at Allegheny College is accepting applications for a tenure-track position, rank open, beginning in August 2018. Candidates should have a PhD or terminal degree, a strong commitment to liberal arts education, and demonstrated experience in qualitative approaches to health. Preference will be given to candidates who use an interpretive or critical approach in their teaching and research. Global Health Studies at Allegheny College encompasses both domestic and international perspectives working from a range of disciplinary approaches that underscore the environmental and social determinants of health as well as the ethical and cultural dimensions of health and development. We support interdisciplinary and interdepartmental teaching and research, community-based research, and service learning.

Teaching responsibility is 5.5 – 6 course equivalencies per year, depending on Senior Project advising, and will include participation in the core Global Health Studies courses, college-wide seminars that emphasize writing and speaking, and upper-level courses in an area of specialty, such as health policy, public health education, health disparities, maternal and child health, health geography, and program planning/evaluation. Geographic area of specialization is open, but previous experience in international settings is particularly desirable. Candidate must demonstrate: (a) a commitment to undergraduate teaching; (b) an openness to involving students in research and programming, and (c) expertise in public health at the local and/or global scale. The successful candidate will provide evidence of excellence in undergraduate teaching, ongoing scholarship, and professional development. Excellent teaching and research facilities are available.

Barrett, The Honors College at Arizona State University is expanding its faculty and invites applications for a position in the core Honors faculty. Barrett faculty members are Honors Faculty Fellows designated as Lecturers, Senior Lecturers, and Principal Lecturers with competitive salaries and generous benefits. The main responsibility of Barrett faculty members rests on the teaching of a rigorous two-semester interdisciplinary seminar, The Human Event, in which students examine primary materials reflecting diverse intellectual traditions from earliest writings to the present. Special attention is given to critical thinking and argumentative writing skills. In addition, faculty teach upper-division seminars and mentor honors students through independent studies, individual conferences, theses, and other scholarly endeavors.

Barrett attracts many of the top students in the country and provides them with an enriched academic experience that challenges them and enables them to become better citizens of the world. Typical incoming students at Barrett are in the top five percent of their high school classes.

We seek to fill a full-time, multi-year faculty position whose primary responsibility will be to teach the first-year Human Event seminar. The position begins August 2018; the nine-month salary will be based on education and experience.

The Liberal Studies Department in the College of Education and Integrative Studies at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona) invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin Fall 2018. Candidates with specializations in the humanities, fine and performing arts or closely related degree fields are especially welcomed to apply.

The Position: Working with a multidisciplinary faculty, the successful candidate will teach Liberal Studies or interdisciplinary core courses, particularly integrated arts courses and a survey course in the humanities for our revised semester program beginning in fall 2018. The Liberal Studies major is the undergraduate major for elementary educators in California. Thus, candidates will provide an interdisciplinary education for undergraduate teacher candidates and General Studies students pursuing a liberal arts-based degree in disciplines related to their future educational paths or careers in fields such as law enforcement, social work, and health care. Candidates will provide Liberal Studies students with a strong foundation in the humanities and fine and performing arts knowledge, including current trends in creativity and innovation, taught through a student-centered and experiential pedagogy (e.g., service-learning). Instruction will focus on developing students’ proficiencies in critical thinking about and synthesis of humanities, arts, and social and natural sciences knowledge in order to understand age-old and emerging questions and issues relevant to our complex, global, informational society. The successful candidate will be expected to provide leadership in the department, and eventually, to fulfill university service commitments. The position requires teaching experience at the undergraduate level and evidence of professional and scholarly productivity commensurate with assistant professor status. Applicants whose work incorporates a global perspective, social responsibility and/or social justice, sustainability, wellness, technology and a commitment to diversity in higher education are particularly encouraged to apply.

Minimum Qualifications: An earned doctorate in a humanities discipline or a related interdisciplinary field focused on fine and performing arts, or a Masters of Fine Arts awarded from a regionally accredited university before the start of position in September 2018. Evidence of scholarly work (conference presentations, publications, grant development) and/or an active record of creative work (exhibitions, performances, professional design record, presentations). Proven ability for teaching integrative courses strong in critical thinking and academic writing, particularly in the humanities and the arts. University/College-level teaching experience. Experience teaching socially diverse students.

Preferred/Desired Qualifications: Demonstrated success in integrative teaching across the natural sciences, mathematics, humanities, and social sciences using student engagement techniques and interactive pedagogies. Scholarship or teaching experience in creativity and its connection to wellness or well being. Experience in mentoring and advising students to pursue professional work related to humanities and/or arts knowledge and fields. Demonstrated collegiality and collaboration within a department, cohort or professional organization. Experience collaborating with faculty in other departments, colleges, student groups, and/or community-based organizations to share disciplinary expertise. Demonstrated strong ability or desire to incorporate educational technology and open source tools and platforms into the teaching of digital humanities and the arts. Experience in mentoring undergraduate research projects and/or scholarship in humanities and/or the arts, preferably some related to students with disabilities. Experience advising and mentoring socially diverse students.

History: pre-Modern China; comparative, American, and European history; Literature: comparative, Asian, and American literature; Media and Arts: the scholarly study of art, art history, and visual studies, the creative practice of film, photography, multimedia, and digital arts, and the study of mass, new, and comparative media; Philosophy: philosophy of mind, logic, the history of philosophy, ethics and applied philosophy, and philosophy of science; Religious Studies: comparative religious studies, individual religious traditions, environmental thought, and leadership practice. DKU will launch an innovative, integrated and interdisciplinary liberal arts and sciences undergraduate program leading to both Duke and DKU degrees. Students interested in arts and humanities will be immersed in integrated core courses including the arts of interpretation in written texts, images and sounds, as well as a common set of university-wide courses on China, global challenges, and ethics. Areas of study in the arts and humanities include, but are not limited to, Global Cultural Studies, Media and Arts, China and US Studies, and Ethics and Leadership. George Mason University (VA) - TT Assistant Professor, Folklore and Public Humanities[]

The George Mason University Department of English invites applications for a nine-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Folklore and Public Humanities. The English department is home to two dynamic and growing graduate programs in folklore: an M.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies in Folklore and a graduate certificate in folklore. This will include development and implementation of strategies for the Academic Affairs program including the shaping and management of the Honors curriculum. The individual will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Academic Affairs program which includes supervision of five academic advisors and assist the Associate Dean in day to day supervision of up to twelve lecturers located in the Lewis Honors College. This position includes program and budget management.

The Humanities Program of Revelle College, University of California, San Diego seeks a Lecturer and Academic Coordinator. The Humanities Program is a core curriculum program, offering five interdisciplinary, chronologically arranged courses in the history of Western culture and ideas to all freshmen and sophomore students. The Program places a strong emphasis on the development of skills in formal, persuasive writing on serious topics and in the reading of challenging texts.

The core Humanities courses are on the following subjects: Ancient Israel and Ancient Greece; Rome, Early Christianity, and the Medieval World; Reformation and Renaissance; The Age of Reason and the Romantic Period; Modern Culture. Each course is centrally concerned with influential texts from formative traditions of Western culture.

As Lecturer, the person hired would teach three large-enrollment courses per year. As Academic Coordinator, he or she would serve as Assistant Director of the Program, working with the program's numerous faculty to maintain and develop curriculum, promote continuity, hire teaching assistants and supervise their work, and implement the curriculum of writing instruction that runs throughout the Program's courses.

This is an academic-year (9-month) appointment with eligibility of continued appointment per UC guidelines. The Academic Coordinator appointment is eligible for reappointment and merit every 2 years. The Lecturer component has the potential for appointment annually through the lecturer application process.

Hiring Salary Range: $50,244-$62,784 (salary commensurate with experience). *Teaching in the summer as additional compensation may be considered.

Required Qualifications:

A Ph.D. awarded for work in a humanistic field (typically in History, Philosophy, or Literature). Degree must be conferred by May 31, 2018

Program Description: The Humanities Program offers interdisciplinary courses in history, philosophy, and literature, with a focus on major aspects of the Western humanistic tradition. In these courses, students examine the development of a wide variety of ideas and forms of expression that exert a major influence on modern America. Through lectures and class discussions, and through the writing of essays, students learn to interpret literary, historical, and philosophical texts and to conduct independent critical assessment of documents and ideas.

The sequence of courses, Humanities 1 through 5, meets the humanities and writing requirement of Revelle College. Instruction in university-level writing is part of all five courses, but students in Humanities 1 and 2 (six units each) receive intensive writing instruction.

Duties and Responsibilities: Full-time assistant professors teach four (4) courses of the Augustine and Culture Seminar each semester. ACS is a mission-driven, two-semester interdisciplinary first-year seminar, required of all students. Each class is capped at sixteen students.

ACS centers on the close reading of primary texts from a wide range of traditions, time periods, and genres. ACS 1000 focuses on texts of antiquity and the Middle Ages, including Augustine’s Confessions. ACS 1001 continues the emphasis on self in the world through the lens of modernity, starting with Shakespeare and continuing to the present. The course gives attention to the Catholic Intellectual Tradition and its ongoing mission to defend the dignity of the human person, recognize the need for human solidarity, and serve the common good.

The students are expected to write a minimum of thirty pages a semester. Full-time assistant professors can expect to work with students on their argumentation and writing skills.

Full-time assistant professors will actively participate in the life of the Program, including teaching in themed Learning Communities and participating in ACSP’s faculty development program. Full-time assistant professors will have the opportunity to periodically teach courses outside of ACSP in their home discipline(s).

Minimum Qualifications: Candidates must have a Ph.D. in a Humanities discipline.

Preferred Qualifications: Successful candidates will have a record of excellence in teaching undergraduate students in the Humanities, and have an interest in teaching the thought and influence of Augustine and the Catholic Intellectual Tradition.

The Program in American Culture Studies (AMCS) at Washington University in St. Louis invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Digital Cultures, renewable annually for up to two years contingent upon satisfactory performance; expected start date is July 1, 2018.  AMCS is an endowed program in Arts & Sciences that fosters cross-disciplinary intellectual exchange and transformative scholarship at the intersections of the humanities and social sciences. It offers an undergraduate major, a Ph.D. certificate program, a Master's program, and a wide array of collaborative research and teaching activities, seeking to build community among students of American culture from many fields.

We are particularly interested in applicants, academics and/or practitioners, whose research, teaching, and practice (1) have a strong theoretical awareness, but at the same time deeply engage ethnographic, material, and/or historical particulars; (2) center on an historically-informed study of digital cultures, broadly defined, especially as they pertain to media as a site of cultural production; (3) engage the digital transformation of media and the public sphere, as it pertains to the history of political economy and power, and matters of identity, membership, and exclusion.  We prefer applicants who engage digital cultures as a subject of study, and not only as a research or presentation methodology.
