American Academy of Arts and Sciences (MA) - Visiting Scholars Program 2018-2019 Fellowship - Deadline: 27 Oct. 2017

The Academy’s Visiting Scholars Program provides residential fellowships to postdoctoral scholars in the humanities and social sciences. The fellowship program offers a collaborative work environment and the opportunity to interact with Academy members. It also creates a national network for these scholars, assisting them in their research and professional development.

Housed at the headquarters of the Academy in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Visiting Scholars participate in Academy-sponsored conferences, seminars, and informal gatherings while advancing their scholarly research. The program also provides Visiting Scholars with the opportunity to develop their professional skills through involvement in the programmatic work of the Academy. This could include pursuing research for a project committee, assisting in the preparation of an issue of Daedalus, helping to organize a conference or a symposium, or other comparable activities. The Academy provides office space and computer services as well as library privileges in cooperation with the Mahindra Humanities Center at Harvard University. The program also features a mentorship program that will pair each Visiting Scholar with an Academy Fellow who is an expert in a similar field of study.

The fellowship is a one-year post-doctoral fellowship with a mutual option to renew for a second year. To be eligible, candidates must have received the Ph.D. degree no more than four (4) years before the application deadline date, must have the degree in hand no later than August 1, 2018. Applicants may not hold a tenure-track teaching appointment nor have previously published a scholarly monograph. The annual stipend is $60,000, plus health insurance.

Nearly 60 academic institutions from across the country have become Affiliates of the American Academy, supporting the Visiting Scholars Program and participating in Academy studies on higher education.

American Philosophical Society Library (PA) - Postdoctoral Fellow in Bibliography - Deadline: 12 Nov. 2017

The American Philosophical Society Library invites applications for a two-year postdoctoral fellowship beginning as early as January 2018 to work on a special bibliography and biography project. As part of its 275th anniversary celebration, the APS Library is launching a major project to create a master bibliography and research tool for all publications of past APS Members. Under the guidance of the Curator of Printed Materials, the postdoctoral fellow will create a bibliography of all publications by the nearly 5,000 past and present elected members of the Society, with a particular focus on 18th-and 19th-century Members. As part of the bibliography research, the fellow will also write and/or update short biographies of past members for the Society’s online directory and Wikipedia articles as necessary. In addition to the bibliography, the fellow will survey APS holdings to identify gaps in the collections related to Member publications and help develop an acquisitions strategy for these items.

The ideal candidate will have expertise in book history, early American history, the history of science, and/or intellectual history. This position may be of particular interest to those who are interested in pursuing a career in special collections libraries. In addition, the successful candidate will be highly organized, have knowledge of print and electronic reference resources, and be comfortable working across a variety of disciplines and subjects. Applicants must have Ph.D. in hand by start date of fellowship.

Salary: $45,000 per year + benefits.

Brown University (RI) - Pembroke Center Postdoctoral Fellowships 2018-19 ("What Are Human Rights?") - Deadline: 7 Dec. 2017

In 2018-19, the Pembroke Center is awarding one-year residential postdoctoral research associate positions to scholars from any field whose research relates to the theme of "What Are Human Rights? Imperial Origins, Curatorial Practices and Non-Imperial Ground". Fellows are required to participate weekly in the Pembroke Seminar, teach one undergraduate course, and pursue individual research.

Candidates are selected on the basis of their scholarly potential and the relevance of their work to the research theme. Recipients must have a PhD and may not hold a tenured position. Fellowships are awarded to postdoctoral scholars who have received their degrees from institutions other than Brown within the last five (5) years. Brown University is an EEO/AA employer. The term of appointment is July 1, 2018-June 30, 2019. The stipend is $50,000 plus $1,500 for research expenses. Postdoctoral Research Associates are eligible to participate in the Brown University health and dental benefit plan.

Brown University (RI) - Political Theory Project - Postdoctoral Research Associate 2018-2020 - Deadline: 11 Nov. 2017

The Political Theory Project (PTP) at Brown University will be appointing up to two Postdoctoral Research Fellows. Post-doctorates must have received their PhD’s within the past three years. Salary is competitive.

Appointments are for two years. Postdoctoral fellows will pursue their own research, participate in PTP working groups, and teach one seminar course per year. In addition to a CV, three confidential letters of reference, and writing sample, applications should include a cover letter describing how their research fits within the mission of the PTP.

Brown University (RI) - Watson Institute Postdoctoral Fellow - Deadline: 20 Oct. 2017

The Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs at Brown University aspires to promote a just and peaceful world through research, teaching, and public engagement. Central to this mission is the Watson Postdoctoral Fellows Program, an effort to galvanize the careers of young social scientists conducting research related to the Institute’s three core thematic areas: development, governance, and security. Participants in this program will join an interdisciplinary community of scholars engaged in theoretically and substantively important research addressing the most pressing global issues of our time. Fellows receive two years of support, to be taken within a three-year period, with the expectation that they will pursue research and participate fully in the intellectual life of the Institute. Fellows will also teach one course per year in the Institute or in an affiliated Brown University social science department.

The fellowship competition is open to candidates from across the social sciences working in any area of the world on issues that can be understood in a comparative global context. Scholars of all nationalities who have received their PhDs within two years of the application deadline are eligible to apply. Individuals who are currently – or have previously been – postdoctoral fellows in other programs are not eligible to apply. As full members of the Watson Institute’s scholarly community, fellows are required to be in residence during the academic year. Fellows will receive an annual stipend of $55,000, plus a health-insurance subsidy. Additional funding of $3,000 may be made available for conference-related travel, research expenses, and research-related programming on campus. Candidates selected for the Postdoctoral Fellows program who have not completed their dissertations by July 1, 2018, will be paid a reduced salary until their dissertation is defended.

Chemical Heritage Foundation (PA) - Beckman Center for the History of Chemistry - Two-Year Postdoctoral Fellowship - Deadline: 18 Jan. 2017

The Beckman Center for the History of Chemistry at the Chemical Heritage Foundation (CHF), a library, museum, and scholarly institute in Philadelphia, PA, invites applications for new multi-year postdoctoral fellowships in the history of science, medicine, technology, and industry

ACHF is pleased to announce the launch of its new 80/20 postdoctoral fellowship program: these new fellowships reflect the Beckman Center’s commitment to providing career-launching fellowships and its support for the career diversity initiatives of the American Historical Association and affiliated societies. 80/20 fellowships will allow the Beckman Center’s postdocs to build skills that can enhance their opportunities outside the academy or their work within it. Fellows will spend one day a week working closely with a CHF staff member from the library, museum, publications team, Center for Applied History, outreach group, Oral History Program, archives, or digital library team on developing skills in one of two areas: collections and curation, or outreach and exhibitions. The other four days each week, postdoctoral fellows will have access to CHF’s considerable resources and ample time to develop and publish their own research. Applicants for postdoctoral fellowships must have their PhD in hand before the July prior to the start of the fellowship and must have earned that degree within the last five years. Postdoctoral fellowship stipends are $45,000, paid in monthly installments.

Collection Strengths: The research collections at CHF range chronologically from the fifteenth century to the present and include 6,000 rare books, significant archival holdings, thousands of images, and a large artifact and fine arts collection, supported by over 100,000 reference volumes and journals. Within the collections there are many areas of special strength, including: alchemy, mining & metallurgy, dyeing and bleaching, balneology, gunpowder and pyrotechnics, gas-lighting, books of secrets, inorganic and organic chemistry, biochemistry, food chemistry, and pharmaceuticals.

Columbia University (NY) - Center for Science and Society - Postdoctoral Positions - Presidential Scholars in Society and Neuroscience - Deadline: 27 Nov. 2017

The Center for Science and Society at Columbia University invites applications for a postdoctoral research scholar/scientist or associate research scholar/scientist position to begin July 1, 2018.

Columbia University is pleased to announce up to three interdisciplinary postdoctoral positions in the Presidential Scholars in Society and Neuroscience program for researchers who have earned the doctorate, or its equivalent, in (1) a humanities, arts, or social science discipline ― such as psychology, psychiatry, public health, law, history, economics, literature, political science, philosophy, anthropology, sociology, journalism, music and the arts ― and who have extensive acquaintance with, and critical understanding of, neuroscience research; OR (2) neuroscience or a related discipline in the natural sciences and who have extensive acquaintance with, and critical understanding of, another discipline in the arts, humanities, or social sciences. These Scholars will join an innovative program, Presidential Scholars in Society and Neuroscience, which includes up to nine postdoctoral positions and a large group of mentors and affiliated faculty from the arts, humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences.

Columbia University (NY) - Society of Fellows in the Humanities 2018-2019 Fellowship Competition - Deadline: 2 Oct. 2017

The Columbia Society of Fellows in the Humanities, with grants from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the William R. Kenan Trust, will appoint a number of postdoctoral fellows in the humanities for the academic year 2018-2019. Fellows newly appointed for 2018-2019 must have received the PhD between 1 January 2016 and 1 July 2018. The Fellowship Stipend for 2018-2019 is $63,000. Medical benefits are provided, and subsidized housing is available. There is a $7,000 research allowance per annum.

Fellows are appointed as Postdoctoral Research Scholars (Mellon Fellows) in the Society of Fellows in the Humanities and as Lecturers in appropriate departments at Columbia University (departments are listed in the "Application Materials (PDF)"). The one-year Fellowship renews automatically for a second and a third year. In the first year, Fellows teach one course per semester. At least one of these courses must be in the undergraduate ("Core") education program: Contemporary Civilization, Literature Humanities, Music Humanities, Art Humanities, Asian Civilizations, Asian Humanities, or Global Cultures.

The second course may be a departmental course, the design of which will be determined jointly by the Fellow and the Fellow’s academic department. In the second year, Fellows teach one course: either a Core course (if only one of the two first-year courses was in the Core) or a departmental course. This will leave one semester in the second year free of teaching responsibilities. In the third year, Fellows again teach one course, either a Core course or a departmental course (to be decided jointly by the Fellow and the Fellow’s department), leaving one semester again free of teaching responsibilities. Please note that all teaching--whether a Core class or a department one--is to be arranged by the Fellow through the Fellow’s home academic department. At least two of the three courses taught in the first two Fellowship years must be in the Core.

In addition to teaching and research, the duties of Fellows include planning a weekly Thursday Lecture Series, which is open for attendance to members of the University community, and participation in the intellectual life of the Society and of the department with which the Fellow is affiliated. The Society also cosponsors conferences and special events planned by Fellows around their special interests.

The Society for the Humanities at Cornell University seeks interdisciplinary research projects for residencies that reflect on the philosophical, aesthetic, political, legal, ecological, religious, and cultural understandings of authority.
From auctoritas to the author to authoritarianism, the question of authority – whether grounded in epistemological expertise, juridical power, rhetorical persuasiveness, creative innovation, divine decree, or political charisma – is inextricable from humanistic inquiry and critique. With authority, the power to decide, to authorize, to adjudicate, to rule, and to hold sway stands or falls – in science, law, art, oratory, religion, or politics. The Society invites scholarly projects that trace the consequences, crises, and possibilities of authority across historical periods, disciplinary boundaries, geographic territories, and social contexts.
At stake in authority is who or what authorizes and bestows power, prestige, and influence. On what basis does authority claim to rule? Knowledge? Law? Charisma? Popular will? The sovereign word? Tradition? Moreover, each expression of authority calls forth its contestation and opposition. At times authority is contested within the same discursive sphere (e.g. different scientific paradigms or hermeneutic interpretations at loggerheads); at times, however, the opposition is based on another source of authority: religious law vs. secular law; scientific knowledge vs. political will; economic concerns vs. ethical concerns. At such junctures, the question then arises: who or what power adjudicates the conflict between appeals to different authoritative instances?
The Society invites scholars to explore the ‘ends of authority,’ understood as its purposes, goals, and ideals as well as its limitations, aporias, and paradoxes. Applicants could investigate the rise of authoritarianism across different historical and political or religious contexts, exploring its conditions, its appeal, its critiques. One could research the crisis of scientific authority, in which expertise itself is called into question on grounds that are impervious to scientific argumentation. Considering the death of the author, one could question what signs, strokes, words, tics, and idiosyncrasies determine a text’s or artwork’s ‘author’; what authorizes an original from its copy or fake; or the degree to which the authority of a few authors still determines research fields today. In the age of a superabundance of information, what differentiates ‘real’ (authoritative) information from ‘fake news,’ and how one can be interchanged with the other as an ‘equal’ source of authority?
The Society for the Humanities welcomes applications from scholars and practitioners who are interested in investigating authority from the broadest variety of international and disciplinary perspectives.
Fellows should be working on topics related to the year’s theme. Their approach to the humanities should be broad enough to appeal to students and scholars in several humanistic disciplines. The Neukom Institute for Computational Science at Dartmouth College is pleased to announce the Neukom Postdoctoral Fellows competition for positions starting September 1, 2018.

Neukom Fellows are interdisciplinary positions for recent Ph.D.s, DMAs, or MFAs whose research interests or practice cuts across traditional disciplinary boundaries, and has some computational component, whether it be a framing concept for intellectual exploration or an explicit part of the work that is pursued. The successful candidate should have a history of collaborative work across disciplines, but still show evidence of independence and initiative. The Fellowships are two- to three-year appointments, with the third year extension considered upon request after a review early in the second year. Neukom Fellows will be mentored by faculty in two departments at Dartmouth College, take up residence in one department, and will teach one seminar course each year on a subject of their interest. Folger Shakespeare LIbrary (DC) - Before ‘Farm to Table’: Early Modern Foodways and Cultures Fellowships - Deadline: 31 March 2018

The Folger Shakespeare Library seeks to hire three post-doctoral fellows for a multi-year collaborative and cross-disciplinary research project entitled “Before ‘Farm to Table’: Early Modern Foodways and Cultures.” This is the inaugural project in the Folger Shakespeare Library’s Mellon Initiative in Collaborative Research. It is headquartered in the Folger Institute, whose mission is to foster vital research questions, gather knowledge communities, and stimulate collections-based research. The Folger Shakespeare Library is home to the world’s largest Shakespeare collection and supports research on all aspects of British, European, and Atlantic world literary, cultural, political, religious, theatrical, and social history from the fifteenth through the eighteenth centuries. “Before ‘Farm to Table’: Early Modern Foodways and Cultures” will investigate the pervasiveness of food in everyday life as a window into early modern culture, addressing such issues as labor, freedom and enslavement, practical knowledge, ethics, and imagination. These perspectives from a pre-industrial world will shed light on critical post-industrial dilemmas and aspirations. The three post-doctoral fellows will work closely with the project’s co-directors and will be responsible for defining and pursuing research agendas, helping to select short-term fellows and other project associates, and creating scholarly and public programs as well as print and online products. We aim to assemble an interdisciplinary team of post-docs with a diversity of cognate interests and approaches, who will engage in independent and collaborative research, writing, and experimentation. Digital Research Fellow (one fellowship available): The Digital Research Fellow will be tasked with developing, building, and trialing a structure for accessing and researching texts, images, and metadata relating to the major themes of the project, with an emphasis on the Folger’s unique collection of food-related manuscripts. Working closely with co-directors and Folger stakeholders, the post-doc will help establish and implement editorial and mark-up conventions for creating a searchable corpus of food-related texts and images. The corpus will provide quantitative and qualitative data for the team’s innovative explorations of a wide range of issues in food pathways and cultures of the period through a variety of techniques, including data mining, data visualization, mapping, network analysis, and text analysis.

Demonstrated knowledge and experience with technologies and standards used in digital humanities scholarship such as TEI markup, data visualization, text and network analysis, and common scripting languages, is required. Relevant experience in developing and leading digital humanities research projects is preferred. Applicants should be able to read and transcribe English secretary hand at an advanced level and mark up texts according to TEI: P5 guidelines. Harvard University (MA) - Center for the Environment - Environmental Fellows Program - Deadline: 17 Jan. 2018

The Harvard University Center for the Environment created the Environmental Fellows program to enable recent doctorate recipients to use and expand Harvard's extraordinary resources to tackle complex environmental problems. The Environmental Fellows will work for two years with Harvard faculty members in any school or department while also strengthening connections across the University's academic disciplines.

The Award: The fellowship includes a salary of $66,000 per year, employee health insurance eligibility, up to $2,500 reimbursement for relocation expenses, and a $2,500 annual allowance for travel and other professional expenses.

The Harvard University Center for the Environment expects to award approximately six fellowships for the 2018 cohort. The Center will organize a co-curricular program to ensure that the fellows get to know each other and each other's work. All fellows will attend biweekly dinners with their colleagues, faculty members, and guests.

Program Requirements: Candidates for 2018 Environmental Fellowships should have received their terminal degree between May 2014 and August 2018. The Charles Warren Center, Harvard’s research center for North American history announces the fifth year of its Global American Studies postdoctoral fellowship. We seek scholars with research interests in Global American Studies: the history of the United States in the world, and the world in the United States. The Mahindra Humanities Center invites applications for one-year postdoctoral fellowships in connection with the Center’s Andrew W. Mellon Foundation seminar on the topic of migration and the humanities.

Migration plays as critical a role in the moral imagination of the humanities as it does in shaping the activist vision of humanitarianism and human rights. Too often, the humanities are summoned merely as witnesses to the spectacle of the significant currents and crises of contemporary life. Literature and the arts are viewed as iconic presences whose primary aesthetic and moral values lie in their illustrative powers of empathy and evocation. Yet the intellectual formation of the humanities—their very conception of the nature of meaning, knowledge, and morals—is deeply resonant with the displacement of values and the revision of norms that shape the transitional and translational narratives of migrant lives.

Built around pedagogies of representation and interpretation—textual, visual, digital, political, ethical, ecological, etc.—the humanities engage with the history of shifting relations between cultural expression, historical transition, and political transformation. The ethics of citizenship in our time are defined as much by migration and resettlement as by indigenous belonging, as much by global governance as by national sovereignty. And the humanities play a central role in defining the terms and the territories of cultural citizenship as it creates innovative institutions and identities in the making of a civil society.

The migration “crisis” makes it imperative for humanists to reflect on the foundational concepts and values of our disciplines in addressing the representation of others as they are recognized in the norms of cultural citizenship. The issues the seminar will explore include: the ethics of hospitality; modes of cosmopolitanism; negotiation of cultural “differences” under duress; the role played by interpretation and cultural translation in enhancing processes of social integration.

We welcome applications from scholars in all fields whose work innovatively engages with migration and the humanities. For 2018-19 we are particularly interested in proposals that engage with migration, cultural memory, and the archive:

How do we understand the relationship between cultural memory as personal or collective narrative and the institutional demands of the legal discourse of memory used as a protocol of evidence that establishes the migrant’s claim to refuge, asylum and/or citizenship? What is the relationship between the affective aspects of migrant memory, such as fear, anxiety, humiliation, trauma, hope, and wish fulfillment, and the truth conditions encoded in jurisprudence and political rationality?

What are the narrative forms and discursive modes that constitute archives of migration, both contemporary an historical? What are the technologies and politics of these representations? How do archives of migrations function as purveyors of information, systems of classification, conduits of dissemination that create new public knowledge?

Terms and Conditions: In addition to pursuing their own research projects, fellows will be core participants in the bi-weekly seminar meetings. Other participants will include faculty and graduate students from Harvard and other universities in the region, and occasional visiting speakers.

Fellows will be joined at the Center by postdoctoral fellows from Germany, who will be coming as part of a collaboration between the Mahindra Humanities Center and the Volkswagen Foundation. Fellows are expected to be in residence at Harvard for the term of the fellowship.

Candidates are nominated for Junior Fellowships, generally by those under whom they have studied. Applications are not accepted from the candidates themselves. A letter of nomination should include an assessment of the candidate's work and promise, i.e. a full letter of recommendation, and also provide complete contact information for the candidate, including current residential address and email address, and the names, mailing addresses, and email addresses of three additional people who agree to write letters of recommendation by the date requested when they are contacted by the Society. Men and women interested in any field of study are eligible for these fellowships. Nominees should be of the highest calibre of intellectual achievement, i.e. comparable to the most successful candidates for junior faculty positions at leading universities.

Thanks to the generous support of the Mellon Foundation, MIT's School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences awards two fellowships each year to promising young scholars working at the intersection of humanities disciplines, or between the humanities and other disciplines. This Fellowship is especially intended for scholars who work in more than one specialty within the humanities, or bridging from the humanities with other disciplines. Terms of Appointment: The School of Humanities, Arts, and, Social Sciences has four departments participating in this search: Comparative Media Studies/Writing, Literature, Global Studies and Languages, Music and Theater Arts. The department also hosts several other research projects which examine different aspects of the international political economy of natural resources. The postdoc will thus be a part of a research team of 12-14 historians.
The project “Political Regulation of Natural Resources 1870-2010, Global Experiences” examines how countries and international bodies have regulated natural resources. The project investigates policy aims and policy achievements as well as capture and distribution of resource rents.
The postdoc will contribute towards the main project by analyzing the development of resource regulation in a country / countries outside Scandinavia.

The Princeton Society of Fellows, an interdisciplinary group of scholars in the humanities, social sciences, and selected natural sciences, invites applications for the 2018-2021 Fellowship competition.

Four three-year Postdoctoral Fellowships will be awarded this year. The stipend for each of the three years of the fellowship will be approximately $86,600. In the fall semester of the second and third years, the Fellow will offer an interdisciplinary undergraduate course in Humanistic Studies. This course might take a more intensive look at materials from “Approaches to Western Culture,” or offer an interdisciplinary approach to the Fellow's own area of humanities expertise. The Fellow will be called upon to lead or contribute to occasional activities designed to build a sense of community among undergraduates in the Humanistic Studies Program—the Program offers local and international field trips, an undergraduate society, workshops and other opportunities.

Rice University (TX) - 2018-19 Rice Seminar ("Wastes: Histories and Futures") Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellows - Deadline: 1 Dec. 2017

The Rice Seminars are designed to promote humanistic research, broadly understood. They bring together a select group of Rice faculty members, visiting scholars, and Rice graduate students to study a common theme from several disciplinary perspectives. Funding is also available to bring in outside speakers to present public talks, provide feedback, meet with the seminar participants, participate in a year-end conference, and otherwise engage with seminar participants and the broader Rice community. The most visible goal of the seminars is a scholarly publication to which all participants will contribute. Equally important but less visible is the creation of international and interdisciplinary scholarly communities that will outlive the seminars themselves. The Center for East Asian Studies at Stanford University is pleased to offer a postdoctoral fellowship in Chinese Studies for the 2018-19 academic year. This award is open to scholars in the humanities and social sciences studying any historical period. The fellowship will begin September 1, 2018 and end August 31, 2019, with a 12-month stipend of approximately $60,000. The Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship is a unique opportunity for the best recent PhD recipients in the humanities to develop as scholars and teachers. The Department of Theology and Religion seeks to appoint a Post-doctoral Research Fellow to work on the ERC-funded project ‘Creating an Alternative umma: Clerical Authority and Religio-political Mobilisationin Transnational Shii Islam (ALTERUMMA)’ project, led by Professor Oliver Scharbrodt. This interdisciplinary project investigates the transformation of Shii Islam in the Middle East and Europe since the 1950s. The research fellow will investigate the role of senior clerical figures in Iran in the lead-up to the Islamic Revolution in 1979.
The research fellow will have PhD on a topic related to thematic remit of the post (modern Iranian history, clerical authority in Shia Islam, intellectual history of modern Iran or similar) and fluency in Persian High level analytical capability, as well as a demonstrated ability to work independently to the very highest levels of research excellence.
The Department of Theology and Religion has an outstanding international reputation in the study of all types of religion in the contemporary world, including inter-cultural theology, textual studies, pentecostal and charismatic studies, inter-religious relations, Islamic studies and Quaker studies. The University of California President’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Program was established in 1984 to encourage outstanding women and minority Ph.D. recipients to pursue academic careers at the University of California. The current program offers postdoctoral research fellowships, professional development and faculty mentoring to outstanding scholars in all fields whose research, teaching, and service will contribute to diversity and equal opportunity at UC.

Contributions to diversity and equal opportunity: The contributions to diversity may include public service towards increasing equitable access in fields where women and minorities are under-represented. The S.V. Ciriacy-Wantrup Postdoctoral Fellowships in Natural Resource Economics and Political Economy will be awarded for the 2018-19 academic year to support advanced research at the University of California, Berkeley.

For the purposes of this fellowship, natural resources are defined broadly to include environmental resources. The fellowship encourages, but is not limited to, policy-oriented research. Applications are open to scholars from any social science discipline and related professional fields such as law and planning, who will make significant contributions to research on natural resource economics broadly defined. Preference will be given to proposals whose orientation is broadly institutional and/or historical, and which are conceptually and theoretically innovative. University of Cambridge (UK) - Centre for Research in Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities - Research Associate 'Genius before Romanticism' - Deadline: 20 Oct. 2017

CRASSH is seeking to appoint a postdoctoral Research Associate to join the ERC-funded project, Genius before Romanticism: Ingenuity in Early Modern Art and Science (based at CRASSH), led by Dr Alexander Marr (History of Art, Cambridge). This five-year project (2014-2019) examines notions of unique talent, heightened imagination and extraordinary creativity in art and science by exploring the language, theories, practices and products of ingenium (ingenuity) ca. 1450-ca. 1750. Research in years 1-3 addressed the 'Language of Ingenuity', 'Conceptualizing Ingenuity' and 'Ingenuity in the Making'. The project is now in year 4, which is focused on 'Ingenious Images': the visual culture of ingenuity, from the iconography of ingenium to the wit of optical games.
Duties and Requirements of the Role: The successful applicant will hold a good first degree and a PhD in a relevant field of research, which must have been awarded by the start of the post. Research experience with early modern texts and/or archives and/or visual and material culture is required; familiarity with current digital humanities research and technology is desirable; experience in researching, sourcing and managing digital images in a scholarly context is also highly desirable. Fluency in English and excellent reading proficiency in at least two modern languages relevant to the project's research (German, Dutch, Italian, French and Spanish) are required and reading proficiency in Latin is highly desirable. Applicants should also provide evidence of their ability to organise and participate in collaborative research initiatives and to present research findings to a scholarly audience. The successful applicant is expected to conduct the majority of their research in Cambridge, but must be willing to travel to European and US libraries and archives where relevant to the project's research/dissemination of research results.

The post holder will conduct research as part of the Wellcome Trust-funded project ‘Body, Self and Family: Women’s Psychological, Emotional and Bodily Health in Britain, c. 1960-1990’. This major interdisciplinary project explores women’s experiences at different stages of the life cycle, emphasising the interplay of body, mind and emotion, how women negotiated different sources of expertise and authority, and how new reproductive and contraceptive technologies affected experiences of ‘embodied time’. The post holder will lead a strand of the project on different modes of public communication about women’s health and illness in Britain in the period c.1960-1990. S/he will consult printed sources, including mass-market magazines for adult women, activist publications, lifestyle magazines and newspaper columns, and will undertake archival research on the papers of female journalists. This major project will transform historical understandings of women’s experiences of health, reproduction, and medical technologies, and will generate new approaches to researching female subjectivity and bodily experience.
Qualifications and Skills Required: The successful applicant must have a PhD in History, Sociology, Journalism or a related discipline; a track record of scholarly publications; and experience in researching historical or contemporary experiences of health and illness or gender. Ideally s/he will also have experience of working as part of a research team; a track record of public engagement activities; and experience of event organisation.

The central aim of the project is to investigate the institutional and structural underpinnings of social and gender inequalities in the English past. The post involves joint research and publication on land records and family papers (correspondence, diaries, wills, accounts, maps/surveys, enclosure records and estate papers); early-modern printed political and religious pamphlets; court, finance and litigation records. Additionally, the post will involve management of the existing website and Twitter account and mentoring doctoral students in the research cluster. The successful candidate will join an existing and vibrant team of academic, early-career and postgraduate researchers working in the Gender, Place and Memory 1400-1900 interdisciplinary Research Cluster at the University of Hull. The successful candidate will have completed a PhD in a cognate area of research, to include social and economic history, cultural history, historical geography, early-modern political thought and/or literature. It is desirebale that candidates will have experience working on early-modern English archival and/or printed texts.

The Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities, supported by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, seeks to hire two Post-Doctoral Fellows for two-year appointments commencing Fall 2018. Environmental Humanities pulls the energy of several discipline-centric humanistic and related movements – environmental philosophy, environmental history, ecocriticism, cultural geography, anthropology, and others – into one common conversation about the relationship between humans and non-human nature, past and present. Intensely interdisciplinary and methodologically diverse, practitioners of the environmental humanities are united by their desire to understand the human place in nature, as well as to examine critically the way people make meaning of it.

The IPRH–Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellows in Environmental Humanities will spend their two-year terms in residence at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and will participate in all activities of the Mellon Environmental Humanities research group, as led by the IPRH–Mellon Faculty Fellow in Environmental Humanities, Professor Robert Morrissey. The Fellows will pursue an individual research project in an area of the environmental humanities; participate in a seminar and programs focused on the methods and challenges of interdisciplinary work in the environmental humanities; work together on a collaborative, public-facing project in the field; and work with the research group to develop the outline for an Environmental Humanities curriculum. Each fellow will be required to teach one of the courses developed in the second year of the fellowship term.

This search for Mellon Fellows is open to scholars in all humanities disciplines, including the humanities-inflected social sciences, whose research and teaching interests lie in the area of Environmental Humanities. Special consideration will be given to scholars whose scholarship explores themes of climate or climate change, indigenous studies, place and space, resilience, or technology.

Eligibility: Applicants should have received their Ph.D. in a humanities discipline between January 1, 2015 and no later than July 31, 2018. Only untenured scholars who have not held the title of “assistant professor” are eligible (visiting, non-tenure-line assistant professors are eligible); lecturers with indefinite appointments that renew (rather than terminate after a fixed term) are ineligible. PhDs are the only terminal degree accepted. Please note that these are external fellowships; current full- and part-time faculty members at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign,as well as scholars who received their doctorates from the Urbana campus, are not eligible for these awards. Scholars who cannot legitimately anticipate the conferral of their degrees by July 31, 2018, should not apply.

Terms: The appointment will begin on August 16, 2018, and the successful applicants must be on the Illinois campus by that date for employment processing and orientation. The Post-Doctoral Fellows will be required to live within 20 miles of Champaign-Urbana during the academic years of the appointment.

The fellowship carries a $56,650 annual stipend, a $5,000 research account, a modest moving allowance, and a comprehensive benefits package. University of Michigan (MI) - Emerging Democracies Postdoctoral Fellowship - Deadline: 15 Jan. 2018

The Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies (WCED) at the University of Michigan invites postdoctoral scholars to apply for the Emerging Democracies Postdoctoral Fellowship. The two-year fellowship supports research on the broad historical, political, economic, and societal conditions under which democracies emerge and autocracies endure.

Up to three awards are available in 2018-2020. Emerging Democracies Postdoctoral Fellows are expected to focus on their own research, participate in WCED workshops and events, and present one public lecture during their fellowship year, while in residence at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

The Michigan Society of Fellows, under the auspices of the Rackham Graduate School, was established in 1970 with endowment grants from the Ford Foundation and the Horace H. and Mary Rackham Funds. Each year the Society selects outstanding applicants for appointment to three-year fellowships in the social, physical, and life sciences, and in the professional schools. Nuffield College and the Department of Politics and International Relations, University of Oxford intend to appoint jointly, with effect from 1 September 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter, two Postdoctoral Prize Research Fellows (PPRFs) in Politics, broadly construed to include political science, comparative politics and political economy, political theory, international relations, and political history.

The key responsibilities of the Research Fellows are to engage in advanced study and independent scholarly research in politics broadly construed (as above); to disseminate research findings through publication and participation in conferences and workshops; to take part in the intellectual life of the College and the Department by organising workshops, seminars or conferences; and to undertake teaching of 48 stint units per year (the equivalent to teaching an eight-week 2-hour seminar series per year), and to assist in examining for the Department.

To be eligible, candidates should hold a bachelors and/or masters degree in a relevant field and should by 1 September 2018 have completed, or be close to completing, a doctorate. Candidates must be within three years of the award of their doctorate at the time of application. Preference will be given to candidates who have not previously held a research fellowship similar to that advertised for more than one year at the time of taking up the fellowship. Allowances will be made for career breaks (for example, family-related leave) and candidates are asked to provide relevant information. Prospective candidates should also have experience of carrying out independent research and a track record of excellent quality papers appropriate for and commensurate with their career level. In 2018–2019, the Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies at the University of Pennsylvania devotes its fellowship to the study of Jews in modern Islamic contexts.
The fellowship will support scholarship on Jewish life, culture and thought as these have developed in modern times across North Africa, the Levant, the Arabian Peninsula, and Central and South Asia. We will question the meaning of modernity beyond the more familiar European, American, and Israeli contexts and welcome research projects that address topics from the sixteenth century and later.
The goals for the year are to bridge linguistic, geographic, social, and methodological boundaries, to connect the study of the intellectual with the study of the everyday, and to encourage attention to new sources and approaches. We seek applications from a range of disciplinary orientations: history, textual study, anthropology, art history, media studies, and other fields that expand or redefine the parameters of the topic.
Eligible projects may focus on the complex relationships between Jews and their Muslims neighbors, or with members of various other non-Muslim or minority communities in the Islamic world. Also relevant is research that explores Jews’ participation in various forms of local, regional, national, colonial, and imperial forms of governance in modern North Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia, as well as projects focused on gender relations, economic behavior, cultural expression, religious life and scholarship as these developed across diverse Islamic contexts.

University of Pennsylvania (PA) - Price Lab for Digital Humanities - Postdoctoral Fellowship in Digital Humanities - Deadline: 30 Oct. 2017

The Price Lab invites applications for the 2018–2019 Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship in Digital Humanities. Awards are available to untenured scholars in the humanities whose PhD must have been received between December 2009 and December 2017. The DH Fellow is required to spend the ten-month academic year (August 2018 – May 2019) in residence at Penn. Fellows are not expected to be in residence during the summer. Fellows have the option to renew the fellowship for a second year if they wish to stay but are not required to do so.

This fellowship is designed to provide an early career scholar with time and support for research, so teaching and other responsibilities are light. Fellows will teach one class during each year of the fellowship, topic and syllabus to be determined in consultation with the Lab’s directors and the Undergraduate Chair of the relevant department. In addition, fellows will lend their advice and expertise on projects that fall into their areas of interest, and will provide assistance at occasional Price Lab workshops and bootcamps.

Through a generous bequest of Robert M. Kingdon, the Institute for Research in the Humanities at the University of Wisconsin-Madison offers two Robert M. Kingdon Fellowships to be awarded to scholars from outside the UW-Madison working on the historical, literary, artistic, and/or philosophical studies of Christian and/or Jewish religious traditions and their role in society. Projects may focus on any period from antiquity to the present, on any part of the world, and in any field(s) in the humanities; can range widely or focus on a particular issue; and can explore various forms of Jewish and/or Christian traditions; the interaction of one or both of these religious traditions with other religious traditions; and/or the relationship of one or both of these religious traditions to other aspects of society such as power, politics, culture, experience, creativity, nationality, cosmopolitanism, gender, and sexuality. Projects that incorporate consideration of religion's interaction with society are especially welcome.

Fellows must be in residence throughout the academic year (except for short research trips, lectures, conferences, etc.) and may extend their residency through the following summer on a non-stipendary basis. The University of Wisconsin-Madison Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship Program invites recent PhDs to apply for its three two-year postdoctoral fellowships in the humanities and humanistic social sciences.

The theme for 2018-2020 applications is “Truth, Fact, and Ways of Knowing.” We seek applications from scholars whose research addresses conceptions of truth (or lie), fact (or fiction) as well as questions of epistemology, representation, and evidence. Scholars may take up these themes directly as the topic of their research in fields that could include philosophy, literature, the arts, cultural studies, politics, or media studies, among others, or through methodological approaches that reflect novel ways of thinking about evidence, proof and argument. We also are interested in scholars who are concerned with the ways in which truth is manipulated, whether by groups, individuals, or discourses. Projects may focus on any area of the world, including cross-regional analyses, at any historical or prehistorical moment.

Valparaiso University (IN) - Residential Postdoctoral Fellowship, Humanities and the Arts (Lilly Fellows) - Deadline: 10 Jan. 2018

We offer up to three two-year residential postdoctoral teaching fellowships in all areas of the Humanities and the Arts for 2018-2020 for scholars seriously considering academic careers in church‑related institutions. Washington University in St. Louis announces the eighteenth year of Modeling Interdisciplinary Inquiry, a postdoctoral fellowship program endowed by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, designed to encourage interdisciplinary scholarship and teaching across the humanities and social sciences. We invite applications from recent PhDs, DPhils, or D.F.A.s (in hand by June 30, 2018, and, no earlier than June 30, 2013) for a position as Fellow. In September 2018, the newly selected Fellows will join the University’s ongoing interdisciplinary programs and seminars. The Fellows will receive a two-year appointment with a nine-month academic year salary beginning at $54,150 per year. Postdoctoral Fellows pursue their own continuing research in association with a senior faculty mentor at WU. During the two years of their tenure, they will teach three undergraduate courses and collaborate in leading an interdisciplinary seminar on theory and methods for advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students in the humanities and interpretive social sciences.

Scholars who have received their Ph.D. degree after June 2014 in any field of inquiry in the humanities or humanistic social sciences - broadly conceived - are invited to apply for a postdoctoral fellowship, made possible through a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to Wesleyan University. (Candidates do not need to have their PhD in hand at the time of application, but will need to have it by June, 2018). The purpose of this Fellowship is to provide scholars who have recently completed their Ph.D.'s with free time to further their own work in a cross-disciplinary setting, and to associate them with a distinguished faculty.

A Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow will be appointed to the Wesleyan University Center for the Humanities for the whole academic years, 2018-2019 and 2019-2020, and will be awarded a stipend of $55,000. He or she will teach a one-semester undergraduate course; participate in the collegial life of the Center for the Humanities, which sponsors conferences, lectures, and colloquia; and give one public lecture. Williams College (MA) - Postdoctoral Fellow in Maritime History - Deadline: 1 Nov. 2017

The Williams-Mystic Maritime Studies Program in Mystic, Connecticut invites applications for a postdoctoral fellow to teach maritime history, supervise independent student research, and participate in 2-3 multi-day field seminars (an offshore sailing cruise and field seminars to the Pacific and Gulf of Mexico coasts) in each of two semesters per year. We are seeking a teacher-scholar with collaborative and interdisciplinary interests to begin July 2018. This is two-year Williams College faculty appointment.

Williams-Mystic (mystic.williams.edu) is a selective off-campus program of Williams College located at Mystic Seaport, with approx. 20 students each semester from many different colleges.

Woolf Institute, Cambridge (UK:Eng) - Research Fellow (‘Music, Memory and Encounters between Jewish and Muslim Neighbours’) - Deadline: 14 Aug. 2017

Founded in 1998, the Woolf Institute's mission is to further understanding between Jews, Christians, and Muslims in order to serve the greater public good. The Institute wishes to appoint a Research Fellow in a forthcoming project concerned with the musical heritage of Jewish and Muslim communities from Syria and Iraq.
We are looking for a scholar with good knowledge and experience in interdisciplinary research which combines ethnomusicology with assorted branches of Jewish and Islamic Studies and Middle Eastern and cultural studies, based on primary sources in Hebrew and Arabic and extensive field work. The research for the project will involve aspects of language and poetry; history, culture and politics; religious writings, prayers and practices; and secular religious and scriptural music; with a strong focus on past and present Jewish-Muslim relations. Thorough expertise of Arabic music, in particular, the Egyptian, Iraqi, Syrian and Lebanese repertoires, will be required, as well as language skills in Arabic and Hebrew. The candidate needs to have acquaintance with Middle Eastern Jewish, Muslim and Christian communities living across and outside the Middle East, in particular in Israel, the UK and the USA. Experience in fieldwork will be essential.
The Research Fellow will work with the Director of Research and other Woolf Institute staff on the project. The person should also feel comfortable working within a fast-paced work environment, in an Institute with a strong academic focus, and as part of a small staff. Finally, the successful candidate will need to be able to commute easily to the Cambridge area.
