I'm guessing it's the same for others who were not contacted?
  • This happened on my account, too. I wrote to the chair and he wrote it was an error. They contacted candidates by email.

Rejection post-MLA:

Campus visit: Scheduled (01/15)

Offer made:

NOTES & QUERIES:

  • Not sure what's going on with this French search. The Dept. recently filled their German position. A word from the wise: this department is a mess. Proceed with caution. They are not sure what they want, why they want it, or what the future looks like. The person in either of these two positions (French or German) will essentially wear mutiple hats, and will be charged with bringing the program back to life. If you do not like a ton of administrative work, in addition to a heavy/ish teaching load, looks elsewhere.

Coastal Carolina University (SC) - TT Asst. Professor of French[]

  • Any news here? Did they schedule interviews or do they have an insider?

College of Idaho (ID) - TT Assistant Professor of French - CAMPUS VISIT STAGE[]

Deadline: Review of applications will begin on November 1, 2015. Send cover letter and CV to: HR@collegeofidaho.edu

Request for more materials: materials requested (11/11) + 1

Rejection: 12/17

Preliminary interview (please specify: Skype, MLA, phone): Skype interview scheduled (11/18) + 1

Rejection post-Skype:

Campus visit: scheduled by phone (12/16)

Offer made: The initial 3 finalists for this position either declined the job offer or withdrew from the search. A fourth candidate was contacted on 3/11.

Invitation to campus visit: 3/11 (also withdrew) + 1 (3/15)

  • Why have so many candidates withdrawn from this search?
  • I think the majority of candidates who have withdrawn from this search have done so because they have gotten job offers elsewhere.
  • I was one of the finalists who withdrew from the search and it was not due to an offer elsewhere.
  • Did you withdraw because of the low pay? Or because it's in the middle of nowhere?  Or both?   Or neither?  Just curious why people are not interested in this job.
  • Although I would have had to have taken a pay cut to accept this position, salary was not my prime reason for withdrawing from the search. Nor was location (though one would probably wish to live in Boise). Though circumstantial, my prime reason was an overall lack of experience amongst members of the department. I would have been the most junior member of the department, but I would have brought in more experience than the rest of my colleagues combined. I thus would have found it difficult to find the departmental support necessary to move forward. (+1)
  • I withdrew because I got an offer from elsewhere, but was on the fence about whether I would take the job had this other job not come through. My reservations were primarily about my own inexperience in the face of having to start a program, not having other colleagues in my discipline, and the difficulty of uprooting my partner to live there.

NOTES & QUERIES:

  • The job has been reposted 4/29.
  • [But now they have posted for a visiting position. It appears that they had a failed search.]

College of Mount Saint Vincent (NY) - TT Assistant Professor of French - OFFER ACCEPTED[]

Request for more materials:

Rejection:

Preliminary interview (please specify: Skype, MLA, phone): phone interview 1/4. I just received an invitation for a skype interview??? 3/31

  • Maybe this happens when they have rolling deadlines?
  • Maybe their original candidates didn't work out?

Rejection post-MLA:

Campus visit: scheduled for feb.

Offer made:

NOTES & QUERIES:

  • any campus interview yet?
  • - Not on my side but I am not hopeful: they don't sponsor visas for international candidates.
  • They will hire someone less qualified. I already have a TT offer, but these kinds of comments make me sick. They should hire the BEST... for God's sake.
  • To the previous poster: what makes you sick? Did it ever occur to you that the BEST applicant might not be an "international" candidate? Just because one is Italian does not make him or her a great opera singer. And just because I'm from Spain does not imply that I'm a great Spanish professor. Well, you get the picture. So...wish these candidates the best and get off your high horse. And NEVER assume that a "non-International" candidate is not the best candidate. Careful...

  • I think they had to reopen the whole search (it says "open for applications") in order for selected candidates to add their confidential letters through Interfolio. My delivery turned to "incomplete" on the 23rd, but I did not get an email either.
  • Thanks for the responses. I wrote the department chair to ask for clarification; I'll update when he gets back to me.

Rejection post-MLA:

Campus visit:

Offer made:

NOTES & QUERIES:

  • the job site is rather strange, no possibility to review your application at the end when you've entered everything, so I hope my documents came through. The resume portion of the site apparently "harvests" information from your CV. The acknowledgment email stated not to expect a reponse if not selected. Also, the ad was posted on the MLA Job info list on December 24, but the site says applications were due before November 30. We shall see! (I submitted 1/11/16)
  • I applied to this one in December. Went back to the HR site on Feb. 10 and the job isn't posted anymore...
  • Several of us received an e-mail stating that this position has now been filled. Did anyone get an interview? Skype? On-campus? Anything? This one seemed a bit weird from the get-go. Inside job? Pre-selected candidate? Thoughts? And see the timeline(s) above; not very professional on their part.

  • Nothing?
  • No news on my side (4/5)
  • cancelled
  • What do they mean by "This position will be opened at a later time after further evaluation. When it is reopened, it will be at a 1.0 FTE." Is this a prospective lecturer position?
  • The search is cancelled. Either funding did not come through, or perhaps they did not find any candidates appealing. You know the drill. This is just their way of indicating that the job will be re-posted at a later date. No promises, no guarantees. 1.0=full-time employment, not likely a lecturer position.

  • Do you think they've gotten their shortlist?
  • They said they were planning to contact candidates within a week after the MLA, so maybe they have but no one is posting ? I don't know though.
  • So this has changed to "Campus" stage but no one has mentioned a visit? Is there any news here?
  • Email saying search was suspended March 4th (+1)
  • Could someone post the email stating that the search was suspended? Thanks.

Should the position be advertised again in the future, I encourage you to consider applying. We enjoyed speaking with you in the screening interview and would gladly have you as a candidate in a future iteration of the search. Again, please accept the search committee's appreciation of your interest."

Anyone know why the search was suspended?

  • I was a Finalist for this position. From what I can glean, after conducting three on campus visits, the search committee decided to offer the position to nobody.

  • did you have a skype interview?
  • no interview :(

Preliminary interview: Skype, October 13

Rejection post-Skype:November 19

Rejection post-MLA:

Campus visit:

Offer made:

NOTES & QUERIES:

  • Inside candidate? The current VAP at Wesleyan has quite an impressive CV. *sigh*
  • You never know. He might be applying for other jobs too.
  • Def inside candidate. The current VAP's profile fits the job description exactly!
  • Yes.
  • Definitely. His research interests were removed from the site, but the job description was written for him. (Early Modern French and European Literature, Thought, and Culture; Performance and Theater Studies in a Transhistorical Perspective; Queer and Gender Studies; Visual Studies; Critical Theory; Mobility Studies and Cross-Cultural Interactions)
  • Deadline just pushed back to december 2nd? That's weird, especially with an inside candidate.
  • It would be irresponsible not to speculate!
  • So here are some speculations - offered as such, without a shred of evidence: an administrator politely asked that this search conform to norms in the field in terms of dealines and interviewing schedule; a candidate who was particularly desired indicated a preference for other positions; or the applications received were too weak to provide two plausible candidates for on-campus interviews.  Of course, there is a better-than-even cahnce that none of these are correct, but the re-posting does seem to imply an unexpected contretemps.  I would further speculate that for those who have applied, but have not heard back, your race has been run; but for those who were waiting on the sidelines, now would be the moment to throw your hat in the ring.
  • Will there be another round of Skype interviews?
  • I think this is a fake search. Look how active Wesleyan is compared to all the other top universities/liberal arts colleges listed here. The other places are waiting, and rightly so, until term is over, when professors will have more time to consider applications. Wesleyan's activity is odd. And they do likely have an inside candidate. Who will likely apply to the post at Amherst (because who wouldn't). It's possible W has pushed back their deadline because they have to wait and see if their internal is going to leave them for pastures new...
  • They won't know if their internal candidate (or anyone else) will take another offer until other schools start making offers around Feb./March. No department in their right mind would delay an entire search waiting for their preferred candidate to get other offers. If anything, departments who know they may be competing with other schools for top TT candidates (internal or otherwise) are going to do everything in their power to make the offer first. The whole early deadlines, early interviews plan may well have been intended to make an offer long before Amherst to make sure they get who they want. One of the ideas behind having interviews at MLA and announcing jobs all at once on the print MLA list back in the day was to regulate the hiring season to stop schools from sniping candidates by holding their searches so much earlier than everyone else that their top candidate would be left with no choice but to take their offer. Now with the prevalence of Skype interviews and ways to advertise jobs early, some places are going back to this strategy. What probably happened here is that between the early deadline, the relatively narrow field description and rumors of a strong internal candidate, they just didn't get enough applications the first time around to please HR and/or enough strong ones that match the description to produce a slate of viable, hireable back-up candidates to invite to campus.
  • Has anyone heard what's happened with this search?

Word on the Street[]

  • Missouri Western State University - phone interviews scheduled (3/3)
  • Why Saint Mary's College of Maryland is not listed here? I know they have a VP with an exact matching profile, is it a fake search? It looks like it!!!!
  • Now listed above, under Full-Time / TT positions. [12/11]
  • For Armstrong U, did they schedule the interviews via skype or it is just a clarification and if so how do you know? Also, the U of MA Amherst, did they sent e-mails requesting letters to candidates or to recommenders? Thank you.
  • Answer re Armstrong: They telephoned to set up a Skype interview the first full week of December.

Email from careers services saying they started reviewing application and are requesting letters. Link takes to the application form where you click "send" to the references previously entered during application process.

  • I haven't heard from any institution I applied to (French and Arabic), and the vaste majority states that the application review will start on November 2nd, does it takes that long? I remember in my first year in the job market, I got my first response from Saint Olaf late October, was it an exception, or should I lose hope at this point (this is my third year in the job market and I am really worried :()
  • Depending on when you started applying, it may be a bit early.
  • 20 jobs on the MLA JIL? Just 20??!??!???
  • It's still early, too early for despair!
  • They will post more jobs in the months November - January, but it still looks grimm. Come on, French departments, you can do better!
  • Is it just me, or are there not that many job postings this year? Is it still early?
  • With all due respect to the previous poster, I do not believe it is paranoia afflicting job hunters. I have gone through interviews for "fake searches" only to be rejected and exhausted after the process and to discover that the department had, indeed, hired the inside candidate. In fact, this has happened every time I've been invited to a campus interview for a job with an inside candidate. So I think rather than labeling people as "paranoid" we should try to support each other and call a spade a spade.  Perhaps they are not "fake" searches but rather searches with an indiscriminately low probability for success. +3
  • I am sorry you had such a bad experience. I want to have more faith in academia since I am about to spend the rest of my life working in it.  There are fake searches, but they are not the vast majority, and my point was more than it is a waste of time to try to figure out if the inside candidate is a favorite or not (even is (s)he is, maybe (s)he will get a better offer elsewhere). And just like the article posted above (vitae) says, there might be another candidate from another campus who is a favorite as well, which would be hard to know. Therefore pretty much any job you will apply for might be one with a "low probability of success" like you said. You talk about supporting each other, well, that inside candidate is also on the job market so if they have already proven their worth, then good for them for getting the job (One of my friends was, and truly she is an awesome teacher and scholar, but for the record it was strongly is its favor from the start but never a 100% sure thing. She still had to work hard for the interview and the campus visit). I think the article from vitea makes some good points at the end as well, taking these are practice for example. I undertand how frustrating it can be if you have been through that multiple times though. For those of us back on the job market, we all had to deal with frustration and disappointment. Good luck to everyone new :)
  • Not many jobs. It also seems that only a few of the schools will go to the MLA -lots of Skype Interviews this year...
  • Dear French and Francophone friends, I hope that those of you who were in Paris yesterday are ok  It's a sad day for everyone, much gloomier than the day we find out that we didn't get the job we wanted.
  • University of ST Mary's College of Maryland: I know it is not listed in here, but any news at all. I am just curious if it is a fake search as they have a VP who's profil fits the exact description?
  • Now listed above, under Full-Time / TT Positions [12/11]
  • Does anyone else find it rude that once initial interviews take place (Skype, phone, etc.), and once follow-up interviews are then scheduled (campus visits, MLA), many search committees choose to NOT reach out to all (other) candidates interviewed to [at least] say "thank you for your time." Yes, we are all busy. But taking days and days, and then weeks and weeks, to (perhaps never) follow back up, is just poor manners. Be professional. Be polite. Be considerate. Finding out that you were not chosen for 'round 2' via the wiki is TACKY. +100 !
  • Hey, I'm still waiting to be rejected from a job to which I applied two years ago, for which I had an MLA interview, and where I knew the chair of the committee. Yay for manners in the humanities!
  • Hey I'm still waiting to be rejected from a job to which I applied 5 years ago, for which I had an on-campus visit!
  • It is not always about being rude. I was once on a search committee where we did Skype and on campus interviews, and then our on campus candidates turned us down, so we had to go back and do more Skype interviews. If we had told everyone else, either after the Skype or on campus interviews, that they were out of the running, we would have had no one else to interview. I agree that they should let you know eventually, though!
  • I'm as anxious for updates as anyone else, but can we reduce the frequency of the "Anyone? Bueller?" variety? They don't provide new information and when I see that the wiki's been updated that's what I assume I'll see.

  • Has anyone else tried the application for Truman State University?  It didn't work for me in either Firefox or Google Chrome (on January 22).  Anyone know anything about this?
  • Safari worked for me.
  • Thanks everyone for letting us know about the interviews and campus visits... It definitely helps to know when we shouldn't keep waiting any email or phone call.
  • Has anyone heard anything about Dickinson College's search for a TT generalist?  I saw the posting on Inside Higher Ed, and on Dickinson's HR page but it seems like they kept it quiet.  Any news or ideas what's going on with it?
  • Does anyone have any information on the searches at Winthrop University and the University of Tampa?
  • I haven't heard anything from Tampa (April 2).
  • My friend had an interview with Winthrop about two weeks ago. I think they're now at the campus visit stage. Good luck!

Has anyone heard from College of William & Mary (VAP)?

  • offer accepted, secondhand

  • Fill in the blank: This year is __even crazier__ compared to last year/previous years.
