Campus Visits Scheduled[]

General Q: Do departments ever invite one person at a time -- as in, contact one candidate, do a visit, then after that contact another candidate? Or if one person has an interview but I don't should I assume it's a no-go for me? A: Generally, 3 candidates are invited for the campus interview. Anything is possible, however, particularly at a time when everyone is seeking to save money. It also (not infrequently) may happen that a finalist receives and accepts an offer and pulls out of a campus visit, necessitating a return to the applicant pool. And, if all 3 campus visits do not yield a hire, deans sometimes will authorize a 4th visit before declaring a "failed" search and having to start all over again the following year. Considering the economic climate, schools might prefer to extend a search this year rather than spending even more money by starting anew next year. Finally, not everyone seems to be sharing with or consulting the Wiki. The information is piecemeal here at best and just because one person has reported a campus interview doesn't mean that other candidates weren't invited. In short, until the final rejection notice is received the position is "in play," but do bear in mind that the above scenarios are more the exception than the rule.

I applied almost immediately after the listing was posted and have yet to receive any acknowledgment of receipt. A: Acknowledgement was by e-mail. If I remember correctly, you had to not only send your materials by mail, but also e-mail your cv and letter directly - maybe there was some confusion there?  Q: That's the part that is worrying me -- that they may not have received the recommendation letters that were sent by mail. Since I sent the cv and cover letter to SILC-French@asu.edu, I would assume (or hope) that they've received them. Was the acknowledgment email for all of your material (both mailed letters and emailed cv and cover letter) or just a response to the emailed cv/cover letter? Thanks for the prompt and helpful reply! A: Double-checked the e-mail. It just states that the application is complete, and no materials are missing. From your question it wasn't clear whether you also mailed your own materials (other than the letters of recommendation, one had to send a hard copy of the cv, cover letter, as well as a statement of teaching and research, if I'm not mistaken. ). A: I investigated this place and decided not to waste my time. There is a former faculty of the fr. dpt. who has a blog just about how bad this place is. Granted, this guy (forgot his name) seems pretty crazy, but he gives pretty concrete evidence as to the lack of excellence at this place.

Ok, found at http://litterature.mcgill.ca/documents/poste2009.pdf: given the lack of advertisement, the specificity of the features sought, and the postdocs that fit the search criteria, is it fair to assume this is an inside hire?]
A: It was posted on a French website as well; my guess is they're looking for native speakers of French and/or Canadian citizens.
A: Canadians will always get priority for Canadian jobs and to work in Montreal (even at an Anglo university) you either have to be a native speaker or so unbelievably proficient that it would take them more than 30 minutes to figure out you aren't.  They also tend to want scholars who will publish in French so that takes out most American-trained people who aren't native speakers.  For what it's worth, they also have a postdoc open and they tend to be less exacting about who they hire for those.

I heard that these positions might not be available since the current VAPs have priority. All will depend on whether they get jobs. The above from 2/4 says review to begin "shortly" - perhaps they're waiting the outcome of the job searches for the VAPs so as not to invest unnecessary time?

Q: Any news?

A: No news. I was interviewed on-campus in January for the Spanish position, but I didn't hear from them ever since. Does anybody have any data on the French/Beur Search? Did they extend an offer? If we aren't hearing from them in either postion, they are probably waiting for budget approval.

NB this is a job in the UK, so 'Lecturer' means what 'Assistant Professor' or 'Associate Professor' (more likely in this case) means in the US. The post-holder will be a full member of the University's teaching and research staff, but in this case only temporary (until 31 July 2012). 'Lecturer' jobs in the UK can of course be either permanent or temporary, just like {Assistant | Associate} Professor jobs in the US!
Job-talks were announced in the week beginning 14-Jun-10. A friend on the Chester faculty (in a different Department whose staff were invited to the talks) tells me this and, as I haven't heard from Chester either way as of 23-Jun-10, I gather that means I've been rejected.
12-Jul-10: spoke to HR, confirmed I'd been rejected because (among other reasons) my background 'only partially fulfilled the French Studies requirement'. My PhD is in French Linguistics, so they must have wanted a literary person, I suppose!
They apparently had 96 applicants for this post and shortlisted 5.

Q.
