• Do they really want a full-size writing sample (I mean, mailing them a whole dissertation or book manuscript? That's a lot of postage!)
  • That's what they asked for, so that's what I did. It really wasn't that expensive.
  • Postage costs for me from the West Coast (priority mail) were $17.  High enough to be annoying, but not in any way a deterrent to actually applying.
  • Copying costs were higher for me than mailing costs, but again, not high enough to be a deterrent.

  • In response to the question above: it is hard to say.  I served on a search committee two years ago, and in order to determine how close several ABD candidates were to finishing, we asked for whatever chapters had been completed up to that point. Other candidates were not requested to submit more materials until after their conference interview.

• • You never know--it doesn't always work that way (trust me)
  • Yes, people need to seriously stop going to departmental webpages, seeing a visitor and automatically assuming that that person is going to get the job. Other possibilites: the department hates the visitor, the visitor hates the department, the administration hates the visitor, the visitor has a partner at another institution, the visitor is quitting academia, the visitor isn't even applying for the job, the visitor needs to be with family elsewhere, etc etc. Or, one final possibility: the visitor has worked their butts off and deserves to compete for the job. Good for them. -- Thanks for this comment. I couldn't agree more. If you believe the visitor will get the job, don't apply. Better chances for the rest of us.
  • There does seem to be a trend where departments "suck the life" out of their term-faculty. It creates a situtation where a VAP might abhore making their situtation permanent. The "success" of becoming permanent faculty is a negative if the teaching load remains high and now you have service,research and a tenure clock ticking. That said, I would be very surprised if that's the situation at Bryn Mawr.

  • Not much news: received a letter dated 30 Nov indicating that review of applications is under way and enc. equal opps card. (7 Dec) x1 (They had already sent me this info via email in early Nov) I did this over email in November, too, and got the card in the mail yesterday. I actually laughed when I saw it was not the expected rejection letter. What on earth are they doing all this time? I actually had a connection to Bryn Mawr years ago, so my first thought when I saw the card in the mail was that they were sending me a rejection letter for the job in the same envelope with a request for money.

  • From general experience I've seen interview requests go out as late as 12/15 - 12/20. But it's getting to the point where it's not unreasonable to call up the department and ask for a timeline.

  • I don't know about teaching load, but there is no reason to believe that this is not a legitimate search. Schools often do full searches when they have already have a VAP. Sometimes it's because they want to hire that VAP in a credible way and sometimes it's because they think they can do better than the VAP they've got. Sometimes they change their minds in the middle of the search. There's no way any of us can know. Either way, it's a pretty unpleasant experience for the poor VAP, but that's academic life.

  • It is not a conspiracy theory to note that there is an existing VAP who fits the job posting. It is merely acknowledging information that may be pertinent to the search. I am sorry that you are depressed by this. Indeed, there is much to be depressed about regarding the job market.
  • It certainly implies a conspiracy. I don't know the guy from a bar of soap, but he has a book, he's done lots of teaching, and he has a classic academic bio photo, so he's probably as good a chance as anyone at getting the job. If he does get it, there is nothing to suggest that it's a fait accompli. As far as I can tell the only "pertinent information" (i.e. information that is useful to potential applicatants) that can be gleaned from the existence of a VAP is that they need someone to teach British history. And we know that anyway, because they posted a job ad. I personally don't find the job market depressing anymore. I've come to terms with it. • Nine-month tenure-track position as assistant professor in Russian/Eastern European History beginning August 2013.
• The successful candidate will be expected to teach survey courses in Western and/or World History, as well as specialized undergraduate and graduate courses. Applicants should demonstrate potential for successful teaching, research, and publication. A Ph.D. is expected by time of appointment.

  • Just out of curiosity, are any of the applicants who received interviews East Europeanists, or are they all Russianists?  As an East Europeanist, I am beginning to get a bit jaded when I see jobs listed as Russia/Eastern Europe or Central/Eastern Europe; they almost always seem to go to the Russianists or Central European (aka German) historians.

Agh! Why do we have this eyestrain inducing, unreadable blue against light gray color scheme on this page?

• Not seeing the colour scheme you describe. The background I'm seeing is definitely white. I would suggest possibly trying another web browser to use the site (as it will appear slightly different in different browsers) Una74 (talk) 14:29, November 12, 2012 (UTC)
