Boston College (MA) - Race, Religion, and the African Diaspora (Open Rank - 2 Positions)

Boston College’s African and African Diaspora Studies Program (AADS) invites applications for two open-rank, open field core faculty positions in race, religion, and the African Diaspora, to begin in August 2017. There will be two jointly appointed positions, one in the Department of Theology and the other in another cooperating department. In theology, we are seeking a scholar with competency in systematic/constructive theology, ethics, comparative theology, liberation theology, feminist theology, or black theology. For the second position, we are seeking a scholar in fields such as religion, religious studies, African diaspora studies, history, art history, sociology, anthropology, political science, comparative literature, ethnic studies, and women’s and gender studies who specializes in the religious experiences of African-descended people. We envision successful candidates teaching classes such as Introduction to African and African Diaspora Religions; Religion in Africa; Varieties of Black Religious Experience; Race, Religion, and Social Justice; and Introduction to Black Theology. The AADS Program has six core faculty members and twelve affiliate faculty members working in English, History, Communication, Sociology, Theology, Romance Languages and Literatures, and Philosophy. In 2016–2017, we will also be searching for another core faculty member who specializes in African American Literature and Culture to be jointly appointed with the English Department.

Successful candidates will have an active research and publication profile, a record demonstrating excellence in teaching, and PhD or the equivalent in a relevant field by August 2017. The Department of Religion at Boston University invites applications for a tenured Associate Professor or Professor to begin July 1, 2017, pending budgetary approval. We seek a senior scholar of religions of the African diaspora (including North American, Caribbean, black church studies, urban and new religious movements, conjure and popular religion) able to teach courses at the introductory and advanced/graduate levels that contribute to an academic religious studies curriculum. Brown University (RI) - TT Asst. Professor - Africana Studies

The Department of Africana Studies at Brown University invites applications for a junior scholar in a tenure-track position specializing Sub-Saharan Africa. The successful candidate should have expertise in twentieth century political, social, and cultural studies of Sub-Saharan Africa with a regional rather than a specific country focus. Candidates must have their Ph.D. or equivalent in hand by the start date of 1 July 2017.

This position carries the possibility of an additional appointment as a Brown University Andrew W. Mellon Gateway Fellow, which would support a 2-year postdoctoral fellowship prior the tenure-track assistant professor appointment. The goal of Brown's Andrew W. Mellon Gateway Fellowship is to support the early career development of scholars from historically underrepresented groups as well as those with a demonstrated commitment to eradicating racial disparities in higher education.

Bucknell University invites applications for a full-time, open rank, tenure-track faculty position in Africana Studies beginning fall semester of the 2017-18 academic year. Bucknell University seeks to hire a dynamic educator who is committed to teaching and creative practice that integrates Africana (African, African-American, and/or African diasporic) studies with performance studies. Our chief concern is not with a specific arts disciplinary specialization, but rather with attracting an artist-teacher-scholar with an Africana Studies orientation, who is eager to work with students and faculty in creative, collaborative, interdisciplinary, imaginative, and original ways. Expertise of the successful candidate includes but is not exclusive to one or more of the following areas: theater, dance, museum studies, creative writing, cultural studies, music, ethnomusicology, multi-media performance, performance art, performance pedagogy, community-based performance, digital storytelling, performance for social change, and/or mediated communication in art, film, and transmedia.

California State University East Bay (CA) - TT Assistant Professor of Ethnic Studies (African American Studies)

DUTIES OF THE POSITION:The Department of Ethnic Studies is seeking an African Americanist with a focus in Black feminism/womanism and environmental justice/sustainability (broadly defined). The successful candidate will teach coursework within the area of African American Studies with an emphasis on African American feminism/womanism, community engagement, and environmental issues in African American communities. The successful candidate will also teach other coursework as assigned within the Department of Ethnic Studies. The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate with other hires in the Department of History and the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences within the 2017 new hire cohort theme of STEM/STEAM and Community Based Research/Collaboration towards producing and implementing educational models that promote student learning in an integrative approach to community engagement and environmental justice and sustainability. In addition to teaching, all faculty are expected to sustain a record of scholarly work, advise majors, assist the department with administrative and/or committee work, and assume campus-wide committee responsibilities. DATE OF APPOINTMENT: Fall Quarter, 2017

QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must have an earned doctorate (Ph.D. or equivalent) in Ethnic Studies, or a related field, at time of appointment. ABD candidates will be considered but must have the required earned doctorate at the time of appointment. Specialization in African American Studies required. Research in feminist theory, Black feminism/womanism, and environmental justice within an African American context as demonstrated by a record of scholarly achievement is required. The Department is also seeking a candidate who has interest and/or experience working with cross-campus initiatives to increase African-American student retention and graduation rates; candidates presenting evidence to this end are preferred. Experience with online coursework preferred. Additional expertise and training in one or more of the following areas is preferred: environmental racism; environmental justice movements; African American feminist/womanist environmental activism; food justice movements; African-American GLBTQ environmental activism; environmental equity; and community engagement. Carleton College (MN) - TT Asst. Professor - Africana / African American Studies

Carleton College invites applications for a tenure-track position in Africana Studies with a major emphasis on current African American issues, beginning September 1, 2017. We plan to hire at the assistant professor level; in extraordinary circumstances we would consider an advanced rank applicant.

This position will be at least 60% in the African and African American Studies Program, and up to 40% in a collaborating disciplinary department. College of Wooster (OH) - TT Asst. Professor - Africana Studies

The Department of Africana Studies at The College of Wooster seeks to fill a full-time tenure-track position, beginning in fall 2017 at the assistant professor level. We are looking for someone with broad interdisciplinary Africana Studies training in either the Humanities or Social Sciences in Diasporic, preferably Caribbean or Black Latin American Studies. The successful candidate must demonstrate a command of Afrocentric/African-centered theoretical and methodological perspectives and approaches, an ability to teach Africana introductory as well as upper-level courses, and be able to supervise independent research projects as part of The College’s Independent Study requirement. We prefer candidates who will have completed the Ph.D. in the discipline of Africana Studies by the time of appointment, who have had previous college/university teaching experience, and a record of research and publications in the field. Seizing this pivotal moment in Georgetown’s history, the Department of African American Studies invites applications for at least four open-rank positions. This first set of hires inaugurates a multi-year hiring initiative and is an integral part of Georgetown University’s plan to expand African American Studies, and establish a Research Center for Racial Justice. We seek scholars who have an ambitious research agenda, a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching, and an earnest desire to help build the newly formed department and participate in other university service. Currently, our strengths lie in African American studies and its intersections with literary studies, sociology, history, and performance studies. Building upon these fields, we seek cross-disciplinary, multi-disciplinary, and trans-disciplinary scholarship that strengthens African American Studies’ capacity in psychology, visual studies, philosophy, government, economics, women’s and gender studies, and law and criminology.

Ithaca College - (NY) - TT Asst Professor- African Diaspora Studies

Ithaca College’s Center for the Study of Culture Race and Ethnicity (CSCRE) invites applications for a tenure eligible Assistant Professor position in African Diaspora Studies.

We are seeking an interdisciplinary scholar who specializes in African Diaspora Studies, Ethnic Studies, Black Studies and/or Gender and Sexuality Studies whose work addresses racial injustice and equity as related to the African Diaspora. The area of specialization is open, however, we are particularly interested in candidates whose scholarship and course offerings engage queer perspectives, gender and/or sexuality using intersectional methodologies. Candidates must be pursuing or have completed a PhD in African Diaspora Studies, Ethnic Studies, American Studies, Black Studies, Gender and Sexuality Studies, or closely related field. Advanced ABDs are encouraged to apply, but preference will be given to candidates who will have completed their Ph.D. by the time of appointment (August 2017). The Department of African American Studies at Loyola Marymount University invites applications for two separate tenure-track positions to begin August 15, 2017, with the possibility of hiring one candidate at the rank of associate professor, and the other at the rank of assistant professor.

For the first position, applicants must have a Ph.D. in the social sciences or in an appropriate interdisciplinary field such as African American Studies with a specialization in the social sciences, including but not limited to Sociology and Anthropology.

Temple University (PA) - TT Asst. Professor - Africology and African American Studies

The Department of Africology and African American Studies seeks to hire a tenure track faculty member at the rank of Assistant Professor. The successful candidate will hold a doctoral degree in African American Studies, or a related liberal arts or social science discipline. We will consider all areas of specialization, but have a particular interest in the African diaspora. Studies of the African diaspora may include interests in language, politics, history, race relations, education, cultural traditions, and Pan Africanism. We are particularly open to someone who could teach and research in the areas of the political and social dimensions of the African practices of independence, self-determination, and freedom, especially in the Americas, e.g., Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Jamaica, Haiti, Cuba, Surinam, Guyana, Panama, Bahamas, and other nations. The ideal candidate should be fluent in English and at least one other language from the region (Portuguese, Spanish, French, Haitian Krèyol, etc). The applicant should be knowledgeable of important African ideas on these themes and have the ability to teach effectively. Courses will include mainly undergraduate classes, although some graduate teaching may be possible. Applicants must have excellent teaching evaluations. The standard teaching load is two courses per semester. The candidate must have an active research agenda consistent with working in a highly competitive department.

The Department of Women’s and Gender Studies at the University of Oregon is seeking a scholar with teaching and research interests in Black feminist theory and feminist theories of race, particularly as race intersects with sexualities and gender. The Department is especially interested in scholars whose work engages feminist thought broadly defined, with emphasis on critical race studies; queer of color critique; transnational feminisms; colonial, decolonial, and postcolonial thought; or other relevant bodies of theory. The Department is also interested in candidates with experience working with African American students and African-American communities. We are open to a variety of disciplinary, interdisciplinary, and methodological approaches. We are particularly interested in applicants trained in feminist, women’s, and gender studies and African American Studies, although we welcome applications from those trained in other fields in the humanities and social sciences that complement existing strengths among the Department’s tenure and tenure stream faculty. The Department of Chicana/o Studies at Loyola Marymount University invites applications for two separate tenure-track positions to begin August 15, 2017, with the possibility of hiring one candidate at the rank of associate professor, and the other at the rank of assistant professor.

University of Colorado Boulder (CO) - TT Asst. Professor of Ethnic Studies - Social Justice and Carcerality Studies

The Department of Ethnic Studies at the University of Colorado Boulder invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in social justice and carcerality studies (an interdisciplinary field that examines confinement in settings such as prisons, reservations, and plantations; the social and cultural conditions leading to criminalization and imprisonment; and bodily coercion in border policing and human trafficking) to begin in Fall 2017. We are particularly interested in applications from scholars focusing on borderlands and Latinx or Chican@ populations, however, the area of specialization for this position is open. In line with building our newly established Ph.D. program in Comparative Ethnic Studies, we welcome comparative, interdisciplinary, and intersectional approaches and innovative theoretical perspectives. The Department of Ethnic Studies is particularly interested in candidates with areas of specialization that complement the Department's existing strengths, and who have the potential to increase the profile of the program as well as the Department's ties with other departments, centers, and organizations on and off campus (e.g. the Latin American Studies Center, The Bueno Center, the Boulder County Latino History Project, Colorado Latino Forum, Café Cultura, the Aquetza youth leadership institute, Padres y Jovenes Unidos, among others ). We will be especially interested in candidates who can build the research profiles and curricular offerings in comparative Latinx studies and US/México borderland studies of the Department. Bucknell University (PA) - Postdoctoral Fellow in Africana Studies

The Postdoctoral Fellow will report to and will work closely with the chair of the Africana Studies program and the Director of the Griot Institute for Africana Studies.

Bucknell Africana Studies Postdoctoral Fellowships support the development of recently-graduated scholars working in the arts, humanities, social sciences, cultural studies and/or post-colonial studies who are committed to the liberal arts and aspire to be distinguished teacher/scholars. We are particularly interested in recent graduates from sectors of the population historically underrepresented in U.S. colleges and universities.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in a field that contributes to African, Caribbean, Afro-Latino/a, and/or African-American studies, received no earlier than May 2012 and no later than August 15, 2017. Postdoctoral Fellows teach two courses per year in fields related to their research, advise and mentor undergraduate students, formally present their research in faculty fora once each semester of the fellowship, and work five hours a week on administrative and programming opportunities related to Africana Studies.

The Postdoctoral Fellowship is for two academic years. Fellows are required to be in residence each semester. The Postdoctoral Fellowship award for 2017-19 includes an annual salary of $50,000, employee benefits, a research/travel fund of $3,000, and housing.
