Brooklyn College, CUNY (NY) - TT Assistant Professor - Caribbean Studies

The Department of Africana Studies at Brooklyn College the City University of New York invites candidates to apply for a tenure track Assistant Professor - Caribbean Studies Social Scientist beginning in the Fall of 2015. Applicants should specialize in contemporary Caribbean politics or societies, Caribbean migration to the United States, and Caribbean communities in the United States.

The candidate may teach courses in our department that are cross-listed with the Political Science Department, courses that are part of the degree requirements for the Caribbean Studies Program, and at least one course in the College's general education curriculum. In addition the candidate may participate in the emerging Urban Studies program.

The Africana Studies Department treats Africa and its diaspora in the United States, the Caribbean, and Latin America with equal depth. Our focus on the Caribbean reflects our commitment to the borough and its high percentage of migrants from the English, Spanish, and French Caribbean. The majority of the College's students of African descent are from the Caribbean.

Brown University (RI) - TT Asst. Professor, Africana Studies

The Department of Africana Studies at Brown University invites applications for a tenure track position as an Assistant Professor in Africana Studies in any discipline. The Ethnic and Women’s Studies Department in the College of Education and Integrative Studies (CEIS) at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona) invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin Fall 2015. We seek a candidate with expertise in African American Studies. Preferences will be given to candidates with specializations, but not restricted, in the following areas: diaspora, critical prison studies, research methodologies, critical race theories, comparative social movements, cultural productions and/or performance, labor, education, digital and social media, queer/LGBT, gender, immigration, and multiracial/hybrid identities. The candidates will be expected to teach courses in their field of specializations, as well as additional EWS courses. In addition, the candidates should have the ability to teach comparative courses, integrate multiple disciplinary cultural and global perspectives, and incorporate educational technology in their teaching and professional activities. Candidates should also be committed to working with the campus cultural and gender centers and with diverse urban student populations.

The Position: The faculty members will teach undergraduate classes in the Ethnic and Women’s Studies Department. California State University, East Bay (CA) - TT Assistant or Associate Professor, African-American Studies

The Department of Ethnic Studies seeks a candidate who will teach coursework within the area of African American studies with an emphasis on African American social justice. The successful candidate will also teach other coursework as assigned within the Department of Ethnic Studies. The successful candidate will be required to collaborate with other hires within the 2015 new hire cohort theme of Teaching Sustainability in Diversity towards producing and implementing educational models that promote student learning in an integrative approach to social justice and sustainability. Successful candidate will be required to work with cross-campus initiatives to increase African-American student retention and graduation rates. In addition to teaching and research, all faculty have advising responsibilities, assist the department with administrative and/or committee work, and are expected to assume campus-wide committee responsibilities. QUALIFICATIONS: Earned PhD in Ethnic Studies or an allied field/discipline with specialization in African American Studies at time of appointment is required. Research in social justice within in an African American context as demonstrated by a record of scholarly achievement is required. Additional expertise and training in one or more of the following areas is preferred: sustainability/environmental racism, women of color feminism/womanism; civil rights movements; prison abolition movements; African-American GLBTQ activism; transnational organizing; structural inequality in education; and /or restorative justice. Additionally, candidates must have a demonstrated ability to teach effectively; experience working with a diverse student population, including first generation college students and students whose first language is not English. Experience with online coursework preferred. Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. or ABD in Africana/Black Studies, African Studies, Religious Studies or related field. Candidates must be qualified to teach general education and upper division courses on precolonial African communities, cultures, religion, and philosophy. 

Preferred Qualifications: Record of excellent teaching and publication with a focus on precolonial Africa is desirable at the time of application. Strong preference will be given to candidates who have a demonstrated understanding of and commitment to Pan-African Studies. Preferred applicants will possess the ability to present precolonial African history, culture and religion in a manner that is accessible and applicable to a general student population as well as those with a particular interest in the field. Research in indigenous African religions, precolonial gender roles and familial/societal structures, and traditional cultural practices are all desirable sub-fields. Pan-African Studies is most interested in hiring a candidate whose teaching and scholarship resonate and connect with the wider community.

City College of New York, CUNY (NY) - TT Assistant or Associate Professor - Black Studies - Cinema

The Black Studies Program and the Department of Media and Communication Arts invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor or tenured Associate Professor with research and teaching interests in Third World Cinema, with a specialization in African and African Diaspora cinemas, and secondary interests in film production, digital media, or digital humanities. The program in African and African American Studies at Dartmouth College seeks to hire a social scientist working in the field of Contemporary Race and Ethnicity Studies, at the senior level. We have particular interest in someone whose scholarship concerns South America or Africa, but we are open to work on other regions in the African Diaspora. Specific disciplines of interest to us include anthropology, economics, geography, legal studies, political science, psychology, or public policy. In the fall of 2015, AAAS will launch a new foreign study program to Ghana, adding to our existing strengths in transnational and interdisciplinary studies. Mississippi State University (MS) - TT Asst. Professor, African American Studies and Sociology

African American Studies and the Department of Sociology at Mississippi State University seeks applicants for a tenure-track assistant professor position to begin in the Fall Semester of 2015. University of Michigan (MI) - American Culture and Residential College - Digital Studies and Social Justice (T-T Assistant Professor)

DIGITAL STUDIES. The University of Michigan’s Department of American Culture and the Residential College seek qualified applicants for a jointly-appointed tenure-track assistant professor in the area of Digital Studies and Social Justice. We seek candidates whose work explores how the everyday practices of digital cultures reflect, reproduce, or create inequalities, whether of class, race, gender, sexuality, ethnic identity, or ability. Assistant Professor in African American Studies at Temple University

The successful candidate will hold a doctoral degree in African American Studies, or a related social science or liberal discipline, and will have teaching experience in the field consistent with the position in African American self-determination organizations and movements, preferably dealing with Afrocentric education. The applicant should be willing to teach exclusively in African American Studies. The preferred areas of specialization are contemporary movements for social justice and educational approaches to the mental liberation of African people.

The applicant should be conversant with Afrocentric theories of knowledge, the current debates surrounding cultural criticism, and African diaspora studies within the context of Pan African education. The teaching load is 4/4. Although this is largely a teaching position the applicant should demonstrate an interest in creating a research agenda consistent with working in a highly competitive department.
