Augustana College (IL) - TT Assistant Professor-Environmental Studies (Social Sciences or Humanities) - Deadline: September 10, 2018

The Environmental Studies Program at Augustana College invites applications for a full-time (10-month) Tenure-track Assistant Professor beginning in the 2019-2020 academic year. Augustana College is a selective liberal arts college of 2,500 students, most of whom live on a wooded 115-acre campus. Rock Island, Illinois is one of the Illinois-Iowa Quad Cities along the Mississippi River, a diverse metropolitan area with 400,000 residents approximately three hours west of Chicago.

The candidate will play a critical role in teaching courses in the Environmental Studies curriculum, a rapidly growing interdisciplinary program with approximately 100 majors. Teaching responsibilities could include an introductory course on the social dimensions of sustainability, climate change, sustainable energy, upper level courses in their areas of expertise, and contribute to the capstone interdisciplinary sequence by guiding the stakeholder process. The signature sustainability pedagogy of the core curriculum combines team-based and project/problem-based learning. Faculty will be expected to contribute to Upper Mississippi Center for Sustainable Communities (UMC) Sustainable Working Landscapes Initiative (SWLI; matches city identified sustainability problems with courses to create real-world learning experiences for students) or other community-based sustainability projects through their teaching. We encourage applicants to address their experience and/or passion for teaching courses using these pedagogies in their letter of application.

Service as an academic advisor to Environmental Studies majors will begin in the second year of employment. The teaching and supervisory load for this position will total 24 credit hours (courses are typically 4 cr. hrs.). In addition to traditional sabbatical leaves available after earning tenure, a one-semester leave to pursue a scholarly agenda is typically available during the third year of pre-tenure employment.

Preference will be given to interdisciplinary candidates and those with areas of specialization in the social sciences or humanities (see below) emphasizing the human dimensions of environmental problems. We encourage applications from those with interdisciplinary backgrounds in both the natural sciences and social sciences/humanities; however, applicants should explicitly demonstrate in their letter of application and teaching and scholarship statements their expertise in the human dimensions of sustainability problems.

Required Qualifications

• Earned Ph.D. (ABD considered) in a

sustainability-related field including anthropology, geography, sociology, psychology, environmental or social justice, history, women and gender studies, political economy, political ecology, environmental policy and governance, sustainable development, religion (i.e., eco-theology, creation spirituality, environmental ethics), or a closely related field emphasizing the human dimensions of social-ecological systems.

• Demonstrated experience or willingness to teach

project or problem-based courses.

• Demonstrated passion for teaching, integrating,

and mentoring undergraduate students in their research. Preferred Qualifications

• Experience of being the instructor of record for

undergraduate level courses; demonstrating a connection to environmental studies a plus.

• Demonstrated expertise and experience in one or

more of the following areas: ethnographic methods, conducting participatory (action-oriented) research, working in the decision-making processes, participating in sustainability policy or politics and engaging diverse communities in research and problem-solving.

• Demonstrated interdisciplinary expertise and

experience in one or more of the following areas: qualitative methods, root causal analysis, social network analysis, participatory decision-making, institutional analysis, stakeholder engagement, adaptive governance and management, risk analysis, or back-casting and envisioning methods. Lafayette College (PA) - TT Assistant Professor - Environmental Humanities - Deadline: Oct. 1, 2018

The Lafayette College Environmental Science and Studies Programs invite applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in Environmental Humanities beginning in the Fall Semester, 2019. Exceptionally well-qualified applicants at the associate or full professor rank may also be considered.

We are seeking an enthusiastic individual who will contribute to the degree programs in Environmental Science and Studies. The candidate should be capable of teaching an introductory course in the interdisciplinary Environmental Studies major, an intermediate level course in Environmental Literature, intermediate and advanced courses in his or her area of expertise, and the environmental capstone course. Candidates with demonstrated expertise in Environmental Justice from an environmental humanities perspective are especially desirable. Backgrounds in Environmental Literature, Science and Technology Studies, or Religious Studies, for example, are of particular interest. Academic responsibilities include teaching 4 courses the first year, and then 5 courses per year thereafter, and participating in events and programming related to the Programs in Environmental Studies and Sciences. In all cases, the successful candidate will have training in Environmental Humanities, a promising scholarly record, and interest in and/or experience working in collaborative interdisciplinary settings.

New York University (NY) - TT Asst. Professor - Environmental Studies (2 Positions) - Deadline: 15 Oct. 2018

The Department of Environmental Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Science at New York University invites applications for two tenure-track positions (at the rank of Assistant Professor). The appointments will begin September 1, 2019, pending administrative and budgetary approval. The successful applicant will be an interdisciplinary scholar with a strong record of research and publishing who is ready to contribute to the education of undergraduates majoring in Environmental Studies and to at least one of two new graduate programs being launched by the department (Environmental Systems Studies and Animal Studies). We are particularly interested in candidates specializing in global environmental governance or urban ecology. We welcome candidates from a broad range of social science, physical science, and policy backgrounds (e.g., environmental studies, earth science, urban studies, ecology, political science, sociology, economics, public policy, geography).

Qualifications: Candidates should possess a Ph.D. by August 31, 2019, have a research program that demonstrates the potential to be a leader in the field of Environmental Studies, and have proven the ability to be an excellent teacher. Northern Arizona University (AZ) - TT Assistant Professor - Geography, Planning, and Recreation #603822 - Deadline: Sept. 15, 2018

Northern Arizona University’s Department of Geography, Planning and Recreation invites applications for an Assistant Professor with expertise and a research agenda that employs geographic information science to illuminate the connections between community design and/or recreation and human health. This is a research focused, tenure eligible position with opportunity for advancement, beginning in August 2019.  

Primary responsibilities are to teach and conduct research on geographic and community factors, especially those related to recreation or leisure activities that affect human health and well-being, including disparities related to economic and social inequalities. The position would be research focused and would support the Interdisciplinary Health PhD program in the College of Social and Behavioral Science. We seek a scholar who employs digital geographies to understand and advance community and public health and well-being. The position would have teaching commitments in both the Parks and Recreation Management (PRM) and Geographic Science and Community Planning (GSP) programs.

• A PhD by the position start date with at least one academic degree in geography, recreation, or closely related fields

The Environmental Studies Program at the University of California, Santa Barbara invites applications for an Assistant Professor, tenure track position in the area of Agriculture, Food and the Environment. This position has an anticipated start date of July 1, 2019. We are particularly interested in individuals whose research integrates bio-physical and socio-cultural aspects of agriculture operating at local to international scales. Applicants should have strong interdisciplinary training that has prepared them to explore challenges related to sustainability of agroecosystems, and food security and justice in the face of climate change and social disruption. Ideally, the candidate's teaching portfolio will have the potential to engage with local food producers and other stakeholders.

The School for Environment and Sustainability (SEAS) at the University of Michigan (UM) seeks applicants for a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Water Policy, Politics and Planning. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in environmental policy or planning, political science, public policy, water resource management, or a closely related discipline, or a J.D. in environmental law with a demonstrated record of scholarly research.

The focus of the proposed position is on water policy and collective decision-making processes that enable sustainable resource management. Preference will be given to candidates that understand water systems and policy interventions worldwide but have a particular depth in North American policy, institutions and politics. Candidates should be knowledgeable about political behavior and dynamics; emphasis could focus on federal, regional, state, local or collaborative decision making and governance.

We seek to hire an individual with interdisciplinary background in environmental studies who can complement our program’s current strengths in natural and social sciences. Areas of study are open but we are particularly interested in candidates from the environmental humanities. We anticipate that a candidate will have a disciplinary strength, but likewise that her/his scholarship will be interdisciplinary. In addition to courses in her/his area of expertise, the new hire will be expected to teach Introduction to Environmental Studies, a 200-level course in Environmental Humanities, and contribute to the co-taught capstone research course in the major/minor curriculum. Boston University (MA) - Post-doctoral position: Quantitative Empirical Research in Private Land Conservation - Deadline: Aug. 1, 2018

The Department of Earth & Environment at the University of Boston is looking for a highly motivated researcher with strong quantitative skills and an interest in developing novel, original analyses to understand and inform private land conservation in the United States.

The position offers the opportunity to work with a novel, integrated database that allows empirical analyses of private land conservation at unprecedented detail and scale. PLACES (the Private Land Conservation Evidence System) integrates information on property boundaries, tax assessor data, sales, protected lands, conservation investments, land cover change, as well as geophysical and demographic data for a majority of U.S. counties. It is developed at Boston University and designed to reduce researcher effort to acquire and collate such data.

The ideal applicant will have (a) own, original research ideas that are competitive for grant funding and will benefit from the use of large-scale parcel data in the U.S., as well as (b) the analytical capacity to implement those ideas using state-of-the-art quantitative methods. Opportunities exist to become involved with ongoing research efforts, including on 1) the impacts of protection on conservation outcomes, 2) the prediction of protection costs at the parcel level and 3) the analysis of site preferences of conservation organizations.

Required Qualifications:

• PhD in conservation biology, environmental science, economics, computer science, statistics, or a related field with a strong quantitative focus.
• Strong quantitative skillset in at least one of the following: causal inference, operations research, spatial statistics, or machine learning, with evidence of successful application.
• Strong interest in understanding / supporting private land conservation in the United States.

Desirable Qualifications:

• Skillset in more than one of the areas listed above
• Familiarity with key theoretical frameworks in economics / quantitative social science
• Prior experience in working in Python and deploying scripts on Linux servers

• Princeton University is pleased to announce the call for applications to the Fung Global Fellows Program at the Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies (PIIRS). Each year the program selects six scholars from around the world to be in residence at Princeton for an academic year and to engage in research and discussion around a common theme. Candidates will be considered in three categories: (1) Four of the fellowships will be awarded to early-career scholars employed in the equivalent of tenure-track positions who are expected to return to their position. (2) One fellowship is set aside for a postdoctoral research associate who at the time of application does not have a tenure-track faculty appointment. (3) In addition, one fellowship will be awarded to a senior scholar. All candidates must be based outside the United States.
• During the academic year 2019-20, the Fung Global Fellows Program theme will be “Thinking Globally.” How people have thought about the planet has informed the institutions, norms, and policies that have pulled it together and torn it apart. For centuries, ideas of free trade, human rights or global governance have framed cooperation and competition, order and disorder. Such ideas have also spawned border-crossing movements, from campaigns to end slavery to commitments to reduce carbon emissions. In turn, global thinking and action have often reinforced commitments to national ideas and efforts to curb global exchange. The goal of this research theme is to explore how ideas framed the understanding of interests and the making of institutions that have yielded commonness and conflict across and within borders. We also want to understand how these ideas and practices came into being through scientific networks, foundations, and think tanks. The Program will also examine rival world ideas that have challenged prevailing orthodoxies. Nowadays, with cooperative norms under challenge, global institutions under stress, and a century of guiding ideas about global convergence in doubt, we want to take a broad look at where these ideas came from, their effects, and the prospects for intellectual renewal or rethinking. The goal of the 2019-20 Fung Global Fellows cohort will be to explore the ways people learned to rely on or to reject strangers far away, as well as to imagine how global relationships came to be and could be different. We welcome applicants from all disciplinary and inter-disciplinary fields from the sciences to the humanities whose work addresses this set of themes in any historical period or world region.
• All candidates must reside outside the United States. To be eligible, postdoctoral applicants must have completed all requirements for their Ph.D. before August 1, 2019 but cannot have received their degrees more than three years prior to the start of the appointment on September 1, 2019. Early-career fellows must have received their Ph.D. or equivalent no earlier than September 1, 2009. Senior scholars, who have received their doctorates before 2009, must have faculty appointments and a record of scholarly accomplishment in the designated theme of the program. Fellowships will be awarded on the strength of a candidate’s proposed research project, the relationship of the project to the program theme, the candidate’s scholarly record, and the ability to contribute to the intellectual life of the program.

Hamilton College (NY) - Visiting Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies - Deadline November 15, 2018

The Environmental Studies Program at Hamilton College invites applications for a two-year visiting position with the possibility of reappointment at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor in the area of environmental justice, beginning July 1, 2019. Areas of expertise could include (but are not limited to): global environmental politics, political ecology, environmental political theory, environmental governance, environmental social movements, sustainable development, participatory action research, environmental health and/or sustainability science. Preference will be given to candidates with interdisciplinary training in the environmental social sciences emphasizing the human dimensions of environmental problems. The candidate will play a critical role in teaching courses in the Environmental Studies Program, and will be expected to teach a course on environmental justice, a course that includes experiential learning, as well as other courses in their area of expertise, and to contribute to advising students in our Senior Program. Candidates with strong research and teaching interests in the intersection of environmental issues and social, political, and economic justice are therefore especially encouraged to apply.  The normal teaching load for this position is five courses per year.
