The Department of Anthropology & Sociology at Albion College invites applications for a tenure-track position Assistant Professor beginning August 2018. We seek to hire a broadly trained medical or biocultural anthropologist who can create dynamic courses with a multifaceted approach. Promise of excellence in undergraduate teaching is essential, and an active scholarly agenda is expected. We especially encourage applications from teacher-scholars whose work focuses on issues relevant to marginalized communities and who are committed to creating an inclusive learning community.

The teaching load is three classes per semester. Applicants are expected to teach a four-field introductory course, a course on anthropological theory or methods, upper-level courses in their research area (for example, but not limited to, medical anthropology, forensic anthropology, anthropology of food and nutrition, environmental health, science and technology studies), and a course that extends the regional specialization of our department beyond North America, Western Europe, South Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa. Applicants have the opportunity to teach courses that fulfill general education requirements in gender, ethnicity, and/or global studies, or contribute to one or more interdisciplinary undergraduate programs. Other teaching opportunities include First-Year and Honors seminars.

Allegheny College (PA) - TT Open Rank - Global Health Studies - Deadline: review begins Nov. 1, 2017 - CAMPUS VISIT STAGE

The interdisciplinary program in Global Health Studies at Allegheny College is accepting applications for a tenure-track position, rank open, beginning in August 2018. Candidates should have a PhD or terminal degree, a strong commitment to liberal arts education, and demonstrated experience in qualitative approaches to health. Preference will be given to candidates who use an interpretive or critical approach in their teaching and research. Global Health Studies at Allegheny College encompasses both domestic and international perspectives working from a range of disciplinary approaches that underscore the environmental and social determinants of health as well as the ethical and cultural dimensions of health and development. We support interdisciplinary and interdepartmental teaching and research, community-based research, and service learning.

Teaching responsibility is 5.5 – 6 course equivalencies per year, depending on Senior Project advising, and will include participation in the core Global Health Studies courses, college-wide seminars that emphasize writing and speaking, and upper-level courses in an area of specialty, such as health policy, public health education, health disparities, maternal and child health, health geography, and program planning/evaluation. Geographic area of specialization is open, but previous experience in international settings is particularly desirable. Candidate must demonstrate: (a) a commitment to undergraduate teaching; (b) an openness to involving students in research and programming, and (c) expertise in public health at the local and/or global scale. The successful candidate will provide evidence of excellence in undergraduate teaching, ongoing scholarship, and professional development. Excellent teaching and research facilities are available.

The Department of Anthropology in the College of Arts and Sciences at American University invites applications for one full-time, tenure-line Professor position that will begin on September 1, 2018. We are seeking a linguistic and/or sociocultural anthropologist who focuses on development, climate change and environment, and/or food security/sovereignty. Applicants should have a PhD or an anticipated PhD completion by August 2018 in Anthropology. Candidates should apply for either Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Full Professor rank. Depending on qualifications, the appointee to this position may be recommended for tenure at the time of hiring.

We welcome applications from candidates who are committed to public engagement, the use of substantive social theory, and the application of rigorous qualitative and/or quantitative research methods in their research and scholarship. The successful candidate’s research will focus broadly on processes of development, climate and environmental change, and/or food security, sustainability, and sovereignty among communities and other social groups. The School of Human Evolution and Social Change at Arizona State University invites applications for an assistant professor to join our world-leading program in evolutionary social science. Arizona State University (AZ) - Assistant Research Professor, Curator of Collections  - Deadline: 16 March 2018

The School of Human Evolution and Social Change (SHESC) at Arizona State University (https://shesc.asu.edu/) invites applications for a position as Curator of Collections (at the academic rank of Assistant Research Professor).  We seek applicants with applied experience and theoretical knowledge of current collections-management approaches, museum experience, as well as experience teaching courses in museum studies or other relevant anthropological/archaeological topics. Anticipated start date is June 1, 2018.  This appointment will be renewable on an annual basis and will not be eligible for tenure consideration.  

As curator for SHESC’s anthropology collections (https://shesc.asu.edu/research/collections), the successful candidate works with archaeological, bioarchaeological, and ethnographic materials located at the Alameda Repository and other ASU facilities. The position manages the curation and use of collections in exhibits and other educational and outreach programs for the School and cooperates with various centers within the School, such as the Center for Archaeology and Society, the Center for Bioarchaeological Research, the Center for Global Health, and the Teotihuacan Research Facility. These duties involve applying contemporary collections practices for large and diverse collections, consultation on interdisciplinary research projects involving collections, advancing the School’s engagement with the local community, teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses, and supervising staff.

The SHESC anthropology collections preserve materials in accordance with applicable governmental policies and procedures, and current professional standards of curation, data collection, management, and access. • Ph.D. in Anthropology, Archaeology, Museum Studies, or a related field by time of appointment.
• Previous experience in managing museum or institutional collections, using collections practices informed by contemporary approaches to collections management.

• Experience as a director of collections  or collections curator, including administration and grant leadership, within an academic, cultural resource management, museum, or institutional collections-management setting.
• Demonstrated experience in coordinating with multiple stakeholders on diverse projects and tasks, with knowledge of planning, budgeting, and implementation of projects.
• Experience with NAGPRA and consultative research.

Brown University’s Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs and the Department of Anthropology jointly invite applications for a tenured, senior position (associate or full professor) in the sociocultural anthropology of the Middle East. This position will fill the currently vacant Roberts Family Chair. We are looking for a scholar whose work addresses on one or more of the Watson Institute’s focal areas: security (including such topics as studies of violence, war, policing, militarization and military policy, and borders), development (including such issues as inequality, gender, humanitarianism, and the ethical dimensions of intervention), and governance (including, for example, ethnographic study of states, transnational governance, civil society, policy, social movements, NGOs, and human rights). Of particular interest are applicants whose work is public or policy-facing, and matches the mission of the Watson Institute “to promote a just and peaceful world through research, teaching, and public engagement.” We seek a theoretically innovative scholar with demonstrated success conducting ethnographically grounded research and an exciting trajectory of future scholarship. The Department of Anthropology at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs seeks candidates for a full-time tenure-track appointment in cultural anthropology, to begin in Fall 2018. We are a four-field undergraduate program dedicated to providing robust research and service opportunities for our students and to valuing interdisciplinary approaches to research, teaching, and service.

We seek a dynamic teacher with the versatility to cover the required history and theory course in anthropology, a field-based methods course in cultural and/or applied anthropology, and upper-division electives in cultural anthropology related to the candidate's areas of interest and specialization. Teaching load is 5 courses per year, with one course offload during the first year of teaching.

The University of New Mexico, Department of Family and Community Medicine is seeking an innovative researcher to join an established, productive and growing department research group.  The successful candidate will both lead and be a part of research that addresses the priorities of the Department, the School of Medicine, the Health Sciences Center, the state of New Mexico and federal research agendas.  These priorities include research addressing the needs of New Mexico’s culturally diverse population, with emphasis on its medically underserved communities. The primary research for the department is in the area of health disparities.

A number of opportunities for independent and collaborative research are in place in the Department of Family and Community Medicine and within the Health Science Center with leadership by departmental faculty.  These include a nationally recognized, productive practice-based research network (PBRN), Research Involving Outpatient Settings Network (RIOS Net), an NIH Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA), the Office for Community Health (OCH), a Center for Native American Health and a new College of Population Health that offers a Masters of Public Health program.  Active departmental maternal and child health and sports medicine fellowships provide additional opportunities for clinical research.  The Health Sciences Center also includes an NCI-funded cancer research and treatment center, an NCI-SEER registry and an advanced neuro-imaging center (MIND institute).  The department has an international reputation for expertise in community-based participatory research (CBPR) and for its work with Native American and Hispanic/Latino communities.  There are opportunities for collaboration with the NM Department of Health, the U.S. Public Health Service/Indian Health Service, local units of government and tribes and tribally-sanctioned organizations.

The successful applicant will be expected to show evidence of training and/or experience in clinical and community research with evidence of research productivity. Priority will be given to scholars with demonstrated community-engaged and patient-engaged research experience and expertise in using engagement practices. The position will combine education and research responsibilities. Effort of time allocated toward each responsibility is negotiable, with the majority of time being devoted to research. The applicant will work closely with the Family Medicine residency program to lead and facilitate required scholarly activity.

This position will be embedded in the work of the OCH and will serve the mission of the Department as well as that of the OCH. The OCH was established in 2007 as an overarching unit at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center to bring together multiple community-engaged initiatives as well as to strengthen community partnerships around the state to improve the health of New Mexicans with an emphasis on social determinants of health. The Department of Anthropology at the University of Oregon seeks a tenure-track assistant professor of biocultural anthropology to begin on September 16, 2018. We are interested in candidates with research at the intersection of biological and cultural anthropology, trained broadly in human biology and the social sciences, and offering a global perspective. We seek applicants with a biocultural focus on issues of human health and well-being, such as through the study of the impact of gender and racial inequities, the developmental origins of disease, or risk and resilience in contexts of poverty and social marginalization. An important dimension of this position is its contribution to the emerging interdisciplinary, campus-level initiative on gender-based violence.

Butler University (IN) - Lecturer in Medical Anthropology - Deadline: 26 Feb. 2018

Butler University invites applications for a full-time instructor in medical anthropology that will also contribute substantially to the university’s core curriculum. The position is non-tenure track with an initial two-year contract beginning August 2018, and with the possibility of continuing appointment.

Candidates should demonstrate excellence in teaching, and a strong commitment to undergraduate education. The Department of Anthropology at Cornell University invites applications for a three-year research/teaching post-doctoral position in visual anthropology and ethnographic filmmaking at the rank of Post Doctoral Associate. We seek a colleague, first, who brings ethnographic insights as well as visual and anthropological theory to bear on contemporary media landscapes, and second, who is actively involved in media production. We anticipate hiring a scholar who will teach students the practice of ethnographic filmmaking while reflecting on how filmmaking leverages important insights into the ways media are deployed in the contemporary world. We anticipate filling the position with a scholar ready to work collaboratively across departments to enhance teaching and research on media, ethnographic film production, and the socio-cultural dimensions of media production and consumption. The position will require teaching two courses per year at undergraduate and graduate levels contingent on the department’s broader curricular needs. Cornell University (NY) - Sanford H. Taylor Postdoctoral Fellowship Program - Deadline: 2 Feb. 2018

The Departments of Anthropology and Science and Technology Studies at Cornell University invite applications for the Sanford H. Taylor Postdoctoral Fellowship Program. We seek a scholar whose research and publications engage empirically, analytically, and theoretically with the intertwining of environment and health. We anticipate selecting a scholar whose work touches on themes of broad interest such as social justice, sustainability, resilience, and risk, including reflections upon the conceptual apparatus of environmental health itself. The geographic focus of research is open. Taylor Fellows are appointed for 2 years and are expected to teach 3 courses during that time. University of Tennessee (TN) - Post Doctoral Research Associate - Cultural Evolution - Deadline: 15 Oct. 2017

The Department of Anthropology at the University of Tennessee (UT) seeks to appoint a two-year postdoctoral researcher in computational social science to start by 1 August 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter. The research project will apply culture evolutionary modeling to analyze existing databases of human behavior, past and present, in order to robustly examine how cultural evolution in the 21st century digital West differs from that of past centuries, millennia and/or traditional societies.

The appointment is a rare opportunity for an early career researcher to join an ambitious research network that is focused on real-world applications of the research to business and non-profit sectors. Although based at UT, the postdoctoral scholar will be invited to collaborate with researchers at Texas A&M University–San Antonio, with all travel expenses covered through that institution, as well as with researchers at the Socionomics Institute near Atlanta, an innovative consulting group with a commercial interest in cultural change and market activity and that has hosted the international “Social Mood” conference every April since 2011.

The ideal candidate will have a developing publication record in areas of computational social science, which may overlap with areas of anthropology, cultural evolution, sociology, social-network analysis, and complexity theory. The successful candidate will have demonstrated expertise in a social science as well as skills in programming, familiarity with large databases and social datasets, and quantitative statistical analysis. Desirable abilities could include knowledge of Bayesian statistics, parametric inference, stochastic processes, and/or phylogenetic analysis.
