FACULTY POSITION IN CONDUCTING
The Wesleyan University Music Department seeks an outstanding orchestra conductor to lead the Wesleyan University Orchestra, teach conducting, and offer additional courses. A commitment to education is essential and an interest in community outreach will be highly valued. Additional fields of expertise such as contemporary music, historical performance practice, or any of the world’s musics are welcome. This is a full-time position beginning July 1, 2013.
TERMS of APPOINTMENT: the University Conductor will hold the additional title of Adjunct Instructor, or Adjunct Assistant Professor of Music, depending on qualifications. “Adjunct” Wesleyan faculty hold four-year renewable appointments with the possibility of promotion.
SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
QUALIFICATIONS: Relevant doctoral or masters level degree or equivalent experience.
DUTIES: Two courses per year conducting the orchestra, one course in conducting for students, and two additional courses in the department. The precise nature of these additional courses is open, but the department is especially interested in contributions to the music theory curriculum (including orchestration) or the choral program.
INSTITUTION: The Music Department’s courses range from introduction to music through graduate seminars, in a program that offers a strong undergraduate music major, an MA in music, and a PhD in ethnomusicology, all with a long-standing interest in performance and cultural studies. Particular areas of strength include: experimental and digital, American, African, East Asian, Southeast Asian, South Asian, and European musics.
