Composer and Director of Instrumental Music. The Music Department at Occidental College invites applications for a regular tenure-track assistant professorship in Composition and Instrumental Music starting in fall of 2015. Candidates are expected to have completed a D.M.A. or Ph.D. degree by August of 2015. The College is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through their teaching, performance, and service. We seek candidates who demonstrate a strong commitment to liberal arts education and a commitment to the pedagogy and practice of varied instrumental repertoires. This would include the art music (including jazz) of national and international composers. The new appointee will be expected to teach five courses in a year, which would include courses in composition, instrumental conducting, and instrumental literature, as well as other courses in the appointee’s area of expertise. In addition, this faculty member would oversee the instrumental program and take primary responsibility for some ensemble direction. Candidates must demonstrate commitment to and excellence in undergraduate teaching as well as significant professional achievement in composition and practical experience as an instrumental conductor. Candidates with professional conducting and/or chamber music experience and a demonstrated willingness to engage scholarship from other subfields of music inquiry are particularly encouraged to apply.

Applicants should submit the following:

~a letter of interest that demonstrates a commitment to excellence in musical practice and pedagogy in a liberal arts environment; the letter should include performance and composition experience, areas of teaching interest, and a statement of teaching philosophy, including how the candidate will support and enhance the College’s goal of building a strong educational environment in classrooms that have an ethnically, socio-economically, and culturally diverse student body.

~a curriculum vitae

~audio or video samples of professional work

~evaluations of undergraduate teaching or other evidence of teaching effectiveness

~three confidential letters of recommendation, to be sent directly by the recommender or a dossier service

All of these materials, as well as any application-related questions, should be sent to the Music Search Committee at musicsearch@oxy.edu. All written materials should be attached as PDF files.

All materials are due by November 10, 2014. Occidental College is an equal opportunity employer. Women and minorities are strongly encouraged to apply. The mission of the College reads as follows:
