The Music Department at Occidental College invites applications for a regular tenure-track assistant professorship in Composition and Instrumental Music starting in fall of 2015. Candidates are expected to have completed a D.M.A. or Ph.D. degree by August of 2015. The College is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through their teaching, performance, and service. We seek candidates who demonstrate a strong commitment to liberal arts education and a commitment to the pedagogy and practice of varied instrumental repertoires. This would include the art music (including jazz) of national and international composers. The new appointee will be expected to teach five courses in a year, which would include courses in composition, instrumental conducting, and instrumental literature, as well as other courses in the appointee’s area of expertise. In addition, this faculty member would oversee the instrumental program and take primary responsibility for some ensemble direction. Candidates must demonstrate commitment to and excellence in undergraduate teaching as well as significant professional achievement in composition and practical experience as an instrumental conductor. Candidates with professional conducting and/or chamber music experience and a demonstrated willingness to engage scholarship from other subfields of music inquiry are particularly encouraged to apply.
Applicants should submit the following:
