NOTES AND QUERIES:

I wonder if people who do not check the wiki have been contacted for MLA interviews. It's already 2/10.

  • Given that MLA is actually still a month away, and given that schools at the level of Yale are usually the last to make interview / material requests, it's not all that surprising that no one has reported anything. Back when MLA was right after Christmas, I had a friend who was asked for an interview by Princeton on Dec. 24. There's still loads of time. [10 Dec.]
  • Thank you for letting us all know. I know that somewhere deep inside my heart there is a tiny flame of hope, and you have just allowed it to burn a little longer...
  • Last year, they contacted people for interviews for a very similar position on 12/17.
  • This may sound very naïve... HOW would one be contacted? Email? Phone?
  • Used to be almost always by phone, but more recently, first contact via email seems common. Basically, if you are lucky enough to be contacted, it will be either by email or phone:)
  • Thanks!
  • Last year, RFAM was made in November via email from search com chair, and MLA interview request was by phone from dept. admin. asst.
  • Thanks! So far no notices of RsFAM -- but again: maybe those who have been contacted are not reading the Wiki.

--They decided to contact people that do non-European Languages and Lteratures.

  • Because job descriptions are basically something you write to waste everybody's time?!? <--this is a weird thing to say, as it implies that the non-European L&L could not have been the most qualified. Minding one's manners should not go out the window because this is anonymous and you're frustrated. (12/17) Well, that is an impressively paranoid reading of a legitimate comment.
  • The position description was hugely broad ("broad-ranging comparatists who work in more than one literary tradition, in any genre"), and they named only "welcome" (not even "desired") subfields. This was the most open call imaginable, and the department has every right to choose which welcome subfield to emphasize over others, based either on the quality of the applications for that subfield or on a change in their perception of departmental needs in that area between the deadline and the call for interviews.
  • ---I would greatly appreciate it if one of the many people who have the rejection could respond to my query for the email address it was sent from. Many thanks.
  • To simply solicit a clarification: what did the committee exactly decide to do? To contact the group of people who were explicitly "welcomed" by the third part of their subfield specifications? Or NOT to contact them?
  • -- Does that mean that they have already scheduled interviews?
  • - Does anyone have confirmation that they have already scheduled interviews.
  • Email rejection received (12/17)

[moving here from above]:

  • I have posted this query several times and am a bit baffled that no one will respond. Apologies for posting again but I urgently need to clarify my travel plans. Unlike others here, I have received no communication from Yale. Could someone who has received the rejection email please indicate the address it was from, so I can get in touch with the department? I have absolutely no idea whom to contact. I willl  move this down to Notes/queries as soon as someone responds. Thanks."
  • As a previous post pointed out, interviews for this position last year were offered over the phone. My gut says that if you haven't received a call... And I wouldn't hang your travel plans on whether you didn't yet get a rejection or haven't yet heard anything but rather on whether you did get a specific interview request. All that said, the rejection emails were sent from Mary Jane Stevens: maryjane.stevens@yale.edu Hope that helps.
