Arizona State University, Barrett Honors College  - Lecturer (Renewable) 

The Barrett Honors College of Arizona State University is expanding its faculty and invites applications for a position in the core Honors faculty. The faculty members of Barrett are non-tenure track Lecturers, Senior Lecturers, and Principal Lecturers; most are on three-year renewable and rolling appointments. The main teaching responsibility rests on a two-semester interdisciplinary seminar course, The Human Event, in which students examine important ideas from earliest writings to the present. Special attention is given to critical thinking and argumentative writing skills. In addition, faculty members teach upper-division seminars, and mentor honors students throughout their four years in independent studies, individual conferences, theses, and other forms of scholarly achievement.

Barrett attracts many of the top students in the country and provides them with an enriched academic experience that challenges them and enables them to become better citizens. The typical Barrett freshman is in the top five percent of his or her high school class, has SAT scores of 1320 or above, and has a high school grade-point average of 3.81.

We seek to fill a full-time, multi-year faculty position whose primary responsibility will be to teach the first-year Human Event seminar. Successful applicants will demonstrate experience in and openness to teaching primary sources through multiple theoretical/disciplinary/methodological approaches, across different cultures and historical eras. The position begins August 2014; the nine-month salary will be based on education and experience.

The Department of English, Comparative Literature, and Linguistics invites applications for an Assistant Professor in Literature and the Environment. Scholars with comparative, transnational, or transhistorical approaches are especially encouraged to apply. Secondary specialization should include one of the following: Critical Race Studies, Queer Theory and/or Sexuality Studies, Global Anglophone Literatures, New Media Studies, or Digital Humanities.

Teaching assignments include courses at upper-division and MA levels, survey courses, general education, composition, and others depending on the candidate's interests and departmental needs. Faculty teach three or four courses each semester. Reduction in teaching load is provided for the first two years, and re-assigned time is available for research, course development, and administration.

Qualifications

· Ph.D. in English or Comparative Literature is required by August 2014, with training and experience in Environmental Studies/Ecocriticism/Green Cultural Studies. ABD's will be considered, but must show evidence of degree completion prior to appointment.

· Evidence of successful teaching.

· Familiarity with recognized best practices in teaching and an interest in using and developing innovative instructional technologies.

We seek to appoint a scholar in the field of Enlightenment and 18th century Studies, whose PhD might be in Comparative Literature, Philosophy, or Music, among other fields. The successful candidate will approach the period comparatively, and move among languages and fields--for instance, the literary and philosophical traditions of the long 18th century; literature and music; aesthetics; political theory; cosmopolitanism; the colonial spaces of the Enlightenment; modernity and materialist thought. We have a special interest in candidates with demonstrated strength in philosophy and literary theory.

The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in interdisciplinary teaching and in advising individualized undergraduate and graduate research programs. To be successful, a candidate will be able to design and teach imaginative and innovative courses in the field within broad, cross-cultural and historically comparative contexts for undergraduates and masters students, as well as teach advanced graduate seminars and work with PhD students in Comparative Literature.

This joint position will be 50% in the Gallatin School, and 50% in the Department of Comparative Literature, Faculty of Arts and Sciences at NYU, and the tenure home of the candidate will be in the Gallatin School.

Qualifications: Ph.D in hand by time of appointment; demonstrated excellence in teaching at the university level; a strong record of research and writing.

Ohio Wesleyan University - TT Assistant Professor of Comparative Modern Mediterranean Literatures and Cultures - MLA INTERVIEWS SCHEDULED

The Department of Humanities-Classics at Ohio Wesleyan University seeks a specialist for a new tenure-track position in Comparative Modern Mediterranean Literatures and Cultures, with emphasis on the Eastern Mediterranean. The successful candidate should be able to work in at least two languages, one of which should be Arabic or Farsi. Other languages that would be considered are Modern Hebrew and Turkish, with a secondary proficiency in one of the relevant Western European languages, such as Italian, Spanish, French, or Modern Greek. We seek applicants whose work focuses on the Mediterranean as a place of cultural and literary interchange. The Humanities major/minor is a comparative literature major/minor therefore the successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate lecture courses and small advanced seminars in his or her field, as well as broader comparative literature courses such as "Myth, Legend, and Folklore" or "Love and Sexuality in Literature," and a sophomore seminar on comparative literature theory or translation. The Department of Cultural Studies and Comparative Literature, College of Liberal Arts, invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position beginning fall semester 2014 (08/25/2014). As a theoretically-oriented, comparatist, interdisciplinary department whose research and teaching span word/image/sound, we seek scholars with specific training in, and who work across, two or more of these three areas.

Ideal candidates will be scholars in Film and Media Studies who are forging innovative and productive connections with other disciplines. In addition to courses in her or his area of expertise, the successful candidate will be expected to teach core undergraduate and graduate courses in the theory, history, and analysis of the moving image. Knowledge of the intellectual and disciplinary genealogies of Comparative Literature is highly desirable. Fluency, near fluency, or high proficiency in one or more modern languages other than English is required.

Appointment will be 100%-time over the nine-month academic year (late-August to late-May). Appointment will be at the rank of tenure-track assistant professor, consistent with collegiate and University policy.

Required qualifications: Ph.D. in Film and Media Studies, Comparative Literature, Cultural Studies, or other appropriate fields. Demonstrable ability to teach core undergraduate and graduate courses in the theory, history, and analysis of the moving image. • Given that MLA is actually still a month away, and given that schools at the level of Yale are usually the last to make interview / material requests, it's not all that surprising that no one has reported anything. The Comparative Literature Department at New York University announces an opening for the position of Assistant Professor/Faculty Fellow commencing September 1, 2014. This is a full-time, non tenure-track one-year appointment, pending administrative and budgetary approval. Ph.D. must be in hand by September 1, 2014, and may not have been received before September 1, 2009. We are seeking an outstanding scholar whose research focuses on the early modern period. We are particularly interested in candidates with a specialization in the field of political philosophy, who also have a strong grounding in literature. Responsibilities include teaching three courses a year and advising students. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to publication and excellence in teaching.

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Simon Fraser University Surrey invites applications for an eight-month Limited Term appointment in the World Literature Program beginning September 1, 2014.

Simon Fraser University has three closely connected campuses in the metropolitan region of Vancouver. The campuses – in Burnaby, Vancouver, and Surrey – have a diverse, multicultural student body. The World Literature Program, faculty, and students are located at the SFU Surrey campus. The World Literature Program is comparative with a focus on intercultural exchange.

The appointment will be made at the rank of Lecturer. The successful applicant will be required to teach three courses in the Fall 2014 semester and three in the Spring 2015.

Applicants must be proficient in at least one language other than English, and must be qualified to teach literature from a comparative or interdisciplinary perspective. Candidates with expertise in two literary traditions, at least one of which is non-European, will have an advantage. Courses to be taught would include an introduction to World Literature, modernism from a World Literature perspective and cross-cultural regional literatures.

Applicants should submit a detailed letter of application that addresses teaching philosophy and experience.
