Description of Duties and Tasks

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Instructs students in the English discipline. Provides learning activities that stimulate student involvement and encourage critical thinking.
  • Demonstrates creativity and innovation in the field,and service in the profession and/or the community.
  • Plans and organizes lesson plans, research and reference materials, syllabi, and other learning aids.
  • Maintains office hours to assist students.
  • Serves on college-wide and departmental committees.
  • Participates in graduation, general assembly, and other official College functions.
  • Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Department Chair, Dean, and/or Executive Vice President.

General Duties: Cecil College, the fastest growing community college in Maryland, seeks qualified applicants to fill a full-time Assistant Professor of English beginning January 2015. Thirty (30) credits per year, teaching primarily Freshman Composition with other duties, committee responsibilities, and meetings as assigned. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting classes in accordance with Cecil College-approved syllabi and the stipulations of the department. This full-time, 10-month, renewable position begins January 2015.

Requirements: Applicants must have a graduate degree in English, Composition and Rhetoric, or a related field, as well as experience using e-technology and web-based course management systems. Applicants who also have experience teaching World Literature or training in teaching ESL are especially encouraged to apply. The College seeks a generalist with a strong record of teaching Freshman Composition and a commitment to working in a two-year, open admissions institution that emphasizes collegiality and collaboration. Massasoit Community College (MA) - Full-Time Faculty, English (Jan. 2015)

Description of Duties: Candidate will teach fifteen hours of English course offerings between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on any of the College's campuses. The candidate must be capable of teaching a variety of courses in English Department specializing in composition. Candidate must be comfortable with the use of technology and its classroom applications. The successful candidate will also have experience working in cross-curricular initiatives and joint assessment. Important aspects of the full-time faculty position are student advising through the Banner System, meeting with advisees as contractually mandated, and assisting with the registration process. The candidate will serve on a minimum of one all-College committee, attend departmental, divisional, and all-College meetings, and participate in professional activities as outlined in the MCCC agreement.


Minimum Qualifications: Minimum of a Master's degree in English or related field is required; degree in composition or rhetoric preferred. Doctorate preferred. The department is seeking a candidate with strong academic preparation for the teaching of composition courses. Candidate must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and show active engagement in the classroom, departmental initiatives, collaboration and college life. Candidate must have three years full or part-time teaching experience, preferably in a Community College setting and must have knowledge of the mission and goals of the College. Experience with cross-disciplinary reading/writing initiatives and departmental assessment a plus. Candidate should be able to demonstrate strategies for teaching students with diverse learning styles, diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, and different levels of preparation and ability. Candidate must have familiarity with the use of technology in the classroom and preferably have experience in course management systems (Canvas or similar system). Candidate must demonstrate commitment to his/her professional field and to departmental initiatives and campus wide committees.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: Primarily responsible for teaching fifteen (15) credit hours per semester of college level and/or Developmental English. Maintain a minimum of fifteen (15) equated office hours per week. Responsible for program development, curriculum development, advising/mentoring students and participating in student retention and transfer activities. Serve on Humanities Division and College-wide committees. Participate in Campus faculty development opportunities. Perform other duties as assigned by the Division Dean. Regular attendance is an essential function of this position. This is a nine (9) month, tenure-track position. Summer teaching may be available. The hours may vary and include evening assignments.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s Degree in English or a Master’s Degree with eighteen (18) graduate hours in English (preferably in rhetoric and composition) and two (2) years recent experience teaching college level English. Flexible delivery methods to accommodate individual learning styles. Proficiency with computers and MS Office (Word and Outlook). Excellent oral/written communication, interpersonal and organizational skills. Light lifting up to 10 lbs and light carrying up to 10 lbs. Ability to reach above shoulder. Periods of time spent sitting, standing, walking, kneeling, bending and stooping.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Doctorate Degree with thirty (30) graduate hours in English. Recent experience teaching English courses at a community college. Experience with D2L. Interest in and knowledge of distance learning and delivery of online courses.

SALARY: $39, 525 - $45, 625 (09 month)
