    • Rec'vd request for voluntary EOE form 12/12 x2 <-- Me too, but I'm a bit confused. If phone interviews were scheduled back in November, why are we receiving these self-identification forms now? Mine came with a note saying they'd successfully received my application documents, so  I didn't get the vibe that it was a "you've been rejected but for internal purposes we'd like to identify our applicants" request. Thoughts?
    • I also got a request for an EOE form 12/12. However, the first round of phone interviews definitely happened 11/25 & 11/26. My impression is that this is just two separate sides of their process that are not working at the same pace.

  • Tenure track position as an Assistant Professor of Communication with an expertise in Video Production and Digital Media, starting Fall 2015
  • Link to Ad: [62]
  • Deadline: Review of applications will begin December 5, 2014, and will continue until the position is filled.
  • List Updates Here:
    • Phone interviews conducted week of January 12th but the professor who currently has the job is on the hiring committee! Unethical and also very biased in his questioning--he also didn't know some of what he was talking about, and this college really needs to hire someone who knows what they're doing. Interview was a bad experience.
    • The previous comment apparently was written by someone who failed to make the cut for in-person interviews. The professor who currently holds the position is retiring and is on the committee because he has knowledge of broadcasting and the technical aspects of it that no one else on this campus possesses. That expertise is required to help the committee choose the right candidate. It's unusual, yes, but hardly unethical. BTW, the professor who is retiring is a member of the Nebraska Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame so we're sure he knows what he's talking about.
    • Based on my experience with this college I also have to wonder about having the current faculty member that holds the position on the search committee. It limits the freedom of the person being considered for the position. Just reviewing the college's current program shows a number of flaws and problems with what the current faculty member has done, so if that is pointed out with the current faculty member sitting on the committee then obviously he is not going to encourage the committee to hire that person. The fact that the current faculty member is in the Hall of Fame only says that he's old and not that he's current in the profession. This college really needs a completely different perspective to come in to help this program and  should be embarrassed that the current faculty member is on the committee because it biases the process and does not encourage open responses from those being considered.
    • Previous comment: "...only says that he's old and not that he's current in the profession." So, being old = being not current. Ageism is more unethical by far.

  • Two things about this job: 1.  This is a continuation of a visiting search from last year which ended in a hire. During initial interviews the committee mentioned that the visiting person would be "an automatic finalist" for the tenure track search this year. 2. Both in the phone interview last year and in an email from search committee chair this year the department indicated that they wanted someone past ABD stage. To be exact, the message asked for "people who are already out in the field, at least as post-doctoral adjuncts, and preferably with more experience." (01/08/15).
  • Request for phone interview (01/16/15)
  • Wow! That is a highly efficient search committee: requests for phone interviews 11 days after the review of apps began.
  • At least this search committee is kind of enough to tell applicants ahead of time that they are just going to hire the VAP. Most search committees just continue with the charade and just hire the VAP anyway. Here they are giving ample warning to potential applicants not to waste their time applying because the decision has already been made.
    • Is that official now?  Did they hire the VAP?
    • Anytime there is a VAP or a spouse (i.e. spousal hire) involved as a candidate, the search is basically a gimmick.

  • List Updates Here:
    • Anyone know if this job is tenure-track?  The ad is ambiguous, but it is an Assistant Professor position.
      •  Siena Heights University does a contract system. The first three years you work there as assistant professor you are an at "will employee" with a yearly contract. After the first three years you go to a long term contract. They call it "super tenure," but it is not the same. They also are not unionized.
      • Their communications program is in the humanities division, and until three years ago they never had anyone in the college of arts and sciences teaching with a Ph.D. in communications. So, whoever works at the university needs to be prepared to work with a lot of faculty and administrators who are still struggling to understand the discipline.
    • Also don't know if the ad says this but the communications department is in charge of the students organization (http://www.shuspectra.com). So, a new hire might end up also advising an online newspaper/magazine.
    • Received email requesting responses to supplementary questions (12/19). x2
    • Called today to determine status of search. I was placed on hold while the admin assistant consulted with a member of the search committee, and after several minutes was told, "you're not a good fit here. You'll have to try again somewhere else." I was also told that they have held a few campus interviews. (3/4)

  • Can anyone provide more details--Anyone receive rejection? Were there no preliminary interviews? Just straight to campus visits? (11/21)
  • It doesn't seem like any rejection emails were sent. This was a very odd call however. Extremely general call for three positions over two years but they didn't advertise in any of the typical places and then went straigh to campus interviews. Seems a bit unconventional--intrigued by the possibility that they had multiple internal hires? Not sure. Have heard nothing on my end as an applicant. (11/29)

  • List Updates Here:
    • Writing sample and references requested 2/6 x2
    • recieved email politely stating application wouldn't be taken further, mentioned 200 applications 2/6 x4
      • Well the email was polite, but as with all rejection letters disingenuous. You can't narrow 200 applications in one week while fully vetting those applications. And at the same time requesting writing samples and references from a small pool. What kind of criteria are they using to narrow? This rejection was downright offensive.
        • Yes, you can.  In fact, most committees do.  There are always a few stand-out applications, and it's more readily apparent than you think which applicants don't quite fit the job description.
  • Also posted at Film Studies 2014-2015
  • Very pleasant rejection email stated "nearly 200 applications" applied and committee has "identified a list of candidates whom we will be reviewing further." I would assume that means phone interviews.

  • Does anyone know if this is an internal hire considering the window for applying is less than 2 weeks?
  • I am wondering the same. It may not be an internal hire but they could have another candidate in mind for the position. Either way, such a short application window suggests they are just going through the motions and that it might not be worth wasting the time to apply.
  • The app materials are also overly specific and directive, very tough to make a decent application that meets all these requirements in the time they have allowed.
  • Not an internal hire or other candidate in mind conspiracy theorists. Btw, the ad was submitted to hr quite some time ago, it takes a while to get through the red tape.
  • ^ Sorry you're having a bad day (based on the part of the comment you deleted). Good to know we were wrong. We're not conspiring. For us it's personal. It's a sellers' market, there's a lot of uncertainty, and it's an isolating experience being on the market. Exchanges like this help allay some of the anxiety and make the best use of our limited time and energy. Best!
  • Any news, y'all? (I know it's early yet, but a job I applied to last week, which had an incredible number of applicants, has already narrowed it down to their finalists. The turn-around was amazing!)

  • Received email rejection indicating that position was filled (02/17/15)

  • From chair "After considering the applicant pool and the Department’s needs, the Department of Communication decided to close the Social Influence faculty search process after hiring one position." [posted 1/10] (x2)
  • There's a reason why most schools do not annouce the hire in a rejection letter, because it appears as if you're rubbing the face of the rejected in their failure to get the job. U of K managed to do that all while sending the rejection letter as a spammy looking Word attachment. Beyond my jealousy of the guy who got the job, I feel a little bad that U of K published his name this way. This was just bad all the way around.
  • ^^^I could not disagree more strongly. I thought it was nice to see a personalized letter sent in a timely manner. When managing a search with over 150 applicants incorrect information can get out or information can be posted (12/31!) before applicants have been notified. The email/letter did not have to indicate the second search was closed, but it did so. Well done UK! (x 3)
  • ^^^ Do you work for UK directly or just their PR firm? Cause they, and now you, failed spectacularly. What's personalized about "Unfortunately, we’re not going to be able to offer you a position". Applicants are supposed to be thankful they were told the second search was closed? Congrats, not only don't you get this job, but it's the only one we offered. "Here kid, enjoy your crap sandwich minus the lettuce and onion." And how do you know there were 150 applicants? Certainly wasn't in the letter.

    • Automated reference request email (10/27). I'm assuming everyone got this, yes?
    • I also received such a request about a week after applying, but had hoped it indicated they were doing some sort of early vetting. Guess not?
    • They won't do early vetting -- Amherst has a strict rule about not looking at the applications until the due date.  Sorry!  :)
    • Since Amherst has a booth at the NCA job fair, does that mean you don't have to apply to get an interview? Can you just stop by and talk to them at the job fair and receive similar consideration as those who send in an application packet? (I'm not being sassy, I just thought it was odd that they will be at the job fair.)
    • The booth that was to be Amherst's was empty at the NCA job fair.
  • Any updates on this?

  • They requested NCA interviews with short-listed candidates (11/19)
  • Any update?
  • For the 3rd year in a row, Wheaton has put the same call out, and not selected any candidates for on campus interviews. Apparently, none of their finalists the past 3 years have been exactly the "right fit." The search will resume in Fall 2015. (12/23)
  • With all do respect, this is a miserable place to work irrespective of salary. The values projected by Wheaton College are full of bigotry and hate towards others. I know many people who are very qualified who will not apply to Wheaton College because they represent exclusion and intolerance. They have no tolerance for opposing views. The faculty live in perpetual fear of othes ratting on them if they mention they are, God forbid, pro-choice or pro gay marriage or that evolution exists. The faith document they make you sign is criminal for an academic to sign. Just imagine for a moment as to how miserable this place must be if they cannot find a single qualified person to work at a liberal arts college in a suburb of Chicago in an oversaturated job market.
  • you mean "pro-choice" right?
  • Sorry, yeah, pro-choice. Honestly, if you watch the news in this country (USA), you would think that abortion is illegal.
