Communication and Media Studies

Welcome to 2010-2011!

  • DO NOT ERASE CONVERSATIONS!!!! If you don't want to read something or it doesn't apply to you, skip it. Conversations in this site are not to be censored!!!
  • We're going to go with alpabetical listings this year. (As voted on last year.) There is a template at the bottom of this page to help us out.
  • A request: Could posters please use more specific time phrasing as "the week of March 14" or "January" instead of "this week" or "last month"? This way, the information can stay informative.
  • Note that some job listings (especially on NCA's site) may expire after a certain number of days; this does NOT necessarily mean the job was canceled or filled. Be sure to save all listings you're interested in!
  • Here's last year's wiki.

  • I thought the same thing! (because of the short turn around AND because this is the exact same call from last year yet I had heard ASU eventually hired someone, though wasn't sure if that person was tenure-track).
  • had a conversation with an ASU faculty at NCA that seemed to suggest this job was not limited to an internal hire.

--Any news on this position? Anyone hear anything about interviews or updates on the search?

  • I applied for this position and have heard nothing. What was the outcome for this position? (1/6)
  • My understanding of ASU's process is that it's highly bureaucratized and takes forever. No news is likely just that. (1/10)
  • Received e-mail from Search Chair indicating search was still viable, but could not continue until budgetary approval was secured sometime in March (waiting on state legislature). (1/25)
  • I applied for this position and received an email 2/3 saying that the search had been cancelled by the Provost for budgetary reasons but that they hope to conduct a similar search next year.

Rejection via email stating anyone not invited for an interview at MLA should get the message that they're not still being considered. Seemed rather rude. Glad I won't be working for them! (1/30)

  • Yes. They have invited people in for interviews. In fact, I think they just finished interviewing last week.
  • I just received confirmation and EEO documents via e-mail today (3/26), a full month later than the report above.

Any updates on this position? (4/11)

Does anyone know if this job has been put on hold, and can anyone verify that people were actually called in for this (not the performance and cultural studies) position? (4/21)

Yes. As stated above, they invited people in for interviews in March for the rhetoric position, as well as for the performance and cultural studies position. I do not know if an offer has been made, if the search is ongoing, or if the position has been put on hold. But, they did interviews. (4/22)

Christopher Newport University (VA) 'POSITION 2'Edit

Link: &job=7072177 http://www.jobtarget.com/c/job.cfm?site_id=560&job=7072177 (NCA)

Deadline: Sept. 30, 2010

Rank: TT (Assistant/Associate Professor)

Area: Intercultural/Co-Cultural communication

Notes: Teaching responsibilities may include courses in Public Speaking, Gender, Interpersonal Communication, Intercultural Communication, Social Movements, Nonverbal Communication, Communication Theory, and Communicating Identity.

  • Not to mention the fact that grads of CNU or comparable institutions would not qualify to work at CNU!
  • Excellent point!!
  • (11-2-2010): A highly ranked degree might factor into employment consideration, but take a look at the faculty profile page: http://www.cnu.edu/communications/profiles/index.asp. Not exactly a collection of Ivy leaguers or top notch talent, at least judging by the same standards being imposed for hiring new faculty. I've also known people who have interviewed for CNU, one was even hired, and the school will take, at least in terms of the quality of applicants made available, whatever they can get. The article might be disturbing to some, but it's basically a marketing strategy to make CNU seem more important, prestigious, etc., than it actually is.
  • (12-20-2010) On this thread, I guess I can be glad to report that, despite some fancy degrees, I have not heard anything. The elite factor, thankfully, cannot be a standalone determinant.
  • Phone interviews scheduled for final week of October.
  • A colleague of mine had a phone interview with them last Friday.
  • Any updates here? It seems like they ended phone interviews a few weeks ago.
  • They are doing campus interviews this week; 3 candidates (Date: Dec. 1)
  • (1-03-11) A colleague of mine from Penn State was offered a tenure-track position here in New Media Studies which I guess is different from this job call? I'm not 100% sure because I didn't see the New Media position listed in this Wiki. Anyway, she had nothing but great things to say about the faculty there and her visit, despite the school's elitist policy on hiring...I guess you can't really blame the Comm Studies Dept. for something decided by the Admin.
  • ANY UPDATES ON THIS POSITION - THIS POSTING IS FOR THE INTERCULTURAL POSITION, NOT THE NEW MEDIA POSITION WHICH HAS ALREADY BEEN FILLED ???
  • They canceled the search - anyone know why ???

Colgate University Postdoctoral Fellowship in Public Address and RhetoricEdit

Link: https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/689

The Department of Writing & Rhetoric at Colgate University invites applications for an Andrew W. Mellon Post-doctoral Fellowship in Public Address and a related field in Rhetoric, to begin Fall, 2011. We seek a colleague with teaching experience who has completed a PhD in Rhetoric or Communication Studies by the time of the appointment but no earlier than 2007, and who does not currently hold a tenure stream position. We are especially interested in candidates who plan a career in undergraduate teaching and research, and whose scholarly program is focused on public address with the goal of combining practical pedagogies with rhetorical theory and criticism. This is a one-year fellowship; the Fellow's time will be divided between teaching three courses in public speaking/public address and conducting a personal research program in his or her scholarly specialization. The Fellow will be invited to contribute fully to the life of the department. Compensation for 2011-12 is $42,000 plus benefits. Financial support for research and travel will be available, and mentoring will be offered by a senior member of the department.

Applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a statement of teaching philosophy, a statement of research objectives, and three confidential letters of recommendation at https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/689. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. Questions about the position should be directed to the chair of the search committee, Kermit E. Campbell (kcampbell@colgate.edu). Colgate University is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer; women and minorities are especially encouraged to apply. Developing and sustaining a diverse faculty, staff, and student body further the university's educational mission.

Georgetown UniversityEdit

(Who deleted this?)

Link: http://cct.georgetown.edu/119918.html

Deadline: 1 November, 2010

Rank: TT Assistant Professor

Area: Communication, Culture & Technology Program, several positions

The Communication, Culture & Technology (CCT) M.A. program at Georgetown University focuses on the relationship between new computational technologies of communication and areas such as science, scholarship, culture, government, media, business, journalism, and the arts.

Position 1 Cultural History

  • NOTES

Position 2 Language, Technology and Politics

  • NOTES
  • Deadline was extended to 12/21/
  • Phone interviews in Feb.
  • Search complete with no hire. (4/6)
  • Two candidates had PhDs from GTown, supervisor of both was non-voting member of search committee
  • One of the two already has a job
  • The other of those was already VAP there - I got a phone interview from non-voting member of search committee and was asked if I would teach the courses she (existing VAP) teaches - super-weird phone interview
  • VAP did not get position - sounds like there are some seriously nasty politics going on there
  • Third candidate specialises in voting behaviours, not anything to do with language or technology

Position 3 Technology Studies

  • NOTES

Position 4 Technology Studies, practice

  • NOTES
  • Last year the search went really quickly and it's been almost a month since the applications were due. Anyone hear?
  • I am also eagerly anticipating news about this search, as Georgetown is my top choice school. Does anyone have any news yet?
  • It's a lot of people's top choice school! I heard they might have an inside candidate for at least a couple of these jobs. I think that 4 searches are going to take a long time to coordinate.
  • Candidates have been contacted for phoners for at least one of these searches.
  • Which position was the phone interview for? (x2)
  • there were phone interviews for the Cultural History position in mid-December.
  • Technology Studies Position: If you look at CCT's event calendar for January, you will see three separate events listed at the end of the month under the heading "CCT Job Talks: Technology Studies." A description of each talk is included. These listings demonstrate that three finalists have been selected (as named on the calendar) and that CCT is in the final phase of completing this seach. I could find no indication about the Language, Technology and Politics position (deadline was Dec. 21) on CCT's site, though. (This comment submitted on Tues. Jan. 18, 2011).
  • Cultural History Position: Phone interviewed for this position in late Dec. and was told that the committee was meeting in mid-January to extend invitations for February campus visits. Haven't heard a peep since though. Has anyone else? -- I also had a phone interview in Dec. and haven't heard anything since. 1/26: One talk has been scheduled at least and now appears on the Georgetown calendar. Not sure if the others just haven't been scheduled yet but have been contacted, or are still pending contact. My guess is that if there's no word by the end of this week, count yourself out.
  • Looks like there are only 3 positions now. Website says: This semester CCT is searching for three faculty positions and finalists are being invited to campus to give talks and meet students, faculty and administrators.
  • General comment: Isn't it odd for them to list the names on their site? At least one of those candidates already has another job. COMMENT: Good point. The candidate for cultural history whose name is posted definitely has a job. Given that person's record, my guess is that the person is up for tenure, so searching that year is pretty commonplace. Still, not risk free.
  • Addition: It seems that two of the three candidates have tenure-track jobs already. COMMENT: Welll, it seems clear that there was an inside candidate, and also that they were looking for an advanced assistant. It seems the candidates (besides the insiders) are all in their tenure year.
  • It seems that several of these jobs has a potential inside candidate if you look at the website. I guess that's how Georgetown functions....
  • Linguistics position is a failed search. They received over 100 apps, but the email said that they possibly didn't write the ad to get the pool they wanted. I'm not sure what that means. COMMENT: It's a fudge, because it looks like someone was trying to shoe-in their protege and inside candidate; looks like the committee didn't buy it. See above.
  • Four candidates have been on campus for the linguistics position. Two have Ph.Ds in Linguistics from G'town (the school has a strong Linguistics program). One of the two is already a VAP at CCT and in the Linguistics Department. So they may still fill the position, although it may have helped if they had been more precise in the advertisement.
  • Was anybody hired at all in any of these positions? NO.
  • A friend of a friend turned down the Cultural History job.
  • The Cultural History search failed as well. It's unnerving to think that a department had four failed searches!
  • They may still be able to fill the Cultural History position. There is a VAP at CCT with a Ph.D. in Cultural Hiatory from GU who was among the finalists. They may offer the position to him. Also he has either published a book or has one in the works and is tenurable. GU generally does not like to hire its own Ph.D.s to avoid inbreeding but under the circumstances they may give him the TT position.
  • The VAP mentioned in the above bullet is not scheduled to each a course in Fall 2011. It could mean ether that he was not offered the TT position and left G'town or that he taking leave to finish wrting his book.

Hillsdale College (MI)Edit

Link: CRTNET post

Deadline: 5 Jan. 2011

Rank: Assistant Professor in Speech (two-year visiting, but can be converted to TT)

Area: Rhetoric and Public Address (will teach course in Western tradition of rhetoric, and maybe fundamentals of public comm, org and business comm, interpersonal comm, and logic)

Notes: 3/3 teaching load

  • Has anyone read their mission statement that the call asks you to respond to in your cover letter? It seems really militant about enforcing a particular way of thinking, and I'm not convinced they offer an environment where one could feel safe about exercising their academic freedom if they disagree with the mission statement's peculiar spin on understanding diversity and social relations. Some key text:
    • "The College values the merit of each unique individual, rather than succumbing to the dehumanizing, discriminatory trend of so called "social justice" and "multicultural diversity," which judges individuals not as individuals, but as member of a group and which pits one group against other competing groups in divisive power struggles."
    • I chose not to apply because of this. I felt the same way about the mission statement; it seemed to conflict with my values intractably. Seems like a good job for someone who holds these politics.
    • I had a similar response to this portion of the mission statement. My initial sense was that this phrasing might have come from a feeling of being embattled as a conservative institution rather than an active opposition to diversity (it's worth looking in to the history of the institution on this point). Also, I consulted a somewhat recent alumnus of the school, who indicated that the school was not actively opposed to diversity in practice but actually had a relatively varied group of students. Even so, it seems like applicants for this position should be comfortable operating in a conservative environment.
  • Any news on this job?
  • Still nada? It seems like somebody would know something by now, am I wrong?

  • Nothing here ... (1/1/11).
  • Four campus visits scheduled for the Spring (1/1/11)
  • Failed search.
  • rejection letter states they will reopen the search in the fall. Anybody know details about what went down? Should I reapply in the fall if I'm still looking?
  • I heard second- or third-hand that an offer was made and declined, and they decided not to go further on the candidate list. I suggest reapplying; rumor is that they didn't get the final candidate pool they really wanted.

Deadline: 6 Dec. 2010

Rank: TT Assistant or Associate Prof in Dept of Comm Studies

Area: Intercultural and Global Communication

Notes:

  • A person in this department told me that there is an extreme level of conflict between faculty members here. Just something to be prepared for. - I guess this comment is informative, but I also want to mention that many departments have conflict/drama among faculty. So, be prepared for that anywhere.- True, of course all departments have conflict/drama. The conflict in this dept is supposed to be extreme, though, and that's helpful to know if anyone interviews with them.
  • I have also heard this from a person who wasin this dept until recently. This person specifically said "I know all departments have their probems, but I have never seen anything like this before" and went into some detail that was pretty outrageous. I do agree that this is good information to have, for anyone who is interviewing with them.
  • On campus interviews scheduled for January -- Have interview invitations been extended to specific people yet? - Yes
  • early March: Heard offer was extended. Does anyone know if it has been accepted?
  • not accepted.

Deadline: will begin reviewing December 5, 2010

Rank: TT Assistant Professor

Area: Rhetorical Studies

Notes: This is a very fast turn around, and apparently they will start reviewing on a Sunday?

  • Agreed, this seems a bit odd. They do have several lecturers and visitors in the department so it may be an internal hire. On the other hand, they are only requesting a small number of materials (letter, CV, recommendations), so it may be a bit more feasible to get it done in a timely manner.
  • I wouldn't worry about an internal hire, it's my impression they were actively recruiting at NCA. I suspect they are hoping to move ahead early in the spring semester, and maybe worried about competing with other R1 rhetoric positions for the best candidates.
  • received letter acknowledging application 12-15, dated 12-6. Letter states committee will read evidence of teaching effectiveness, did I miss the mention of this before? Agreed - totally odd. I just checked my records and there was no mention of this in the ad
  • This is not an internal hire. There are no visiting assistants or lecturers in the department at the moment. Not sure where that rumor comes from. Few materials requested to allow for quick turn around. Three campus interviews scheduled.
  • The above reads like it's a member of the search committee. If top candidates have already been chosen, should I bother to mail more materials? Yes, you should. Like all job searches, more invites are possible (e.g., if the first three prospectives accept positions elsewhere).
  • any news on this one?
  • offer was made; Anybody know who got this job? They granted interviews very quickly, so I'm curious who the front-runners were.
  • I heard through the grapevine the person took another job and the search failed. (I have no insight into Purdue's speecific search, but I am fully aware of a number of qualified rhetoricians on the market. It is therefore shocking to me (and very sad for our qualified colleagues) that a rhetoric search would fail these days) (x3!)
  • It's of no surprise to me, though. Rhetoricians had only 5 days to gather materials! I chose not to apply just because of the short deadline. I can't help but to read it as an inside hire or recruit; even if it is not so, 5 day deadline screams "we don't respect job candidates' time." No thanks. I don't apply for short deadline calls.
  • I don't know anything about this department in particular, but I just wanted to point out that searches do sometimes fail for reasons that have nothing to do with the quality of applicants or the search committee (ie, budget shortfalls, administrative changes at the university wide level, etc.).

University of California, San DiegoEdit

Link: http://communication.ucsd.edu/jobs.html

Area: Digital/Networked Media and/or Race, Ethnicity and Communication

Deadline: 15 November 2010

Rank: TT Assistant Professor

Notes:

  • received request for reference letters 11/12 (X8). Was told that they have made a long/short list, like position below. Anyone know how many are on it?
  • Has anyone who has applied specifically to "position 1" received requests for additional publications and/or notification of the search being narrowed to a short/short list?
  • Requested additional publications, said I was on the short/short list 11/22.
  • Received rejection letter in the mail (12/7) (x8)
  • Also, I had emailed the chair Chandra Mukerjee -- it's ONE position that they are filling in either one of the areas. Poorly written description. (Well, pardon a non-academic moment, but that just sucks.) That's really lame and confusing. To me, it sounds like departmental/school politics-like they had to write the position two ways to satisfy various' individuals particular desires and demands.
  • received request for reference letters (11/12) (X5)
  • anyone have a sense of how long their semi-short list is (i.e. those who've been contacted for reference letters)?
  • The e-mail literally said "long/short list of applicants." I'm not quite sure what that even means.
  • In reference to the long/short list question above...I received the same email from the search committee chair and did a bit of searching around--seems a long/short list can be anywhere from 10 to 20 candidates.
  • Is there anyone who was contacted for an interview etc., not for reference letters?
  • I believe that positions 1 & 2 are the same -- there's one position with two possible ways that it will be filled. (The ad doesn't say that there are two positions.)
  • Ah, I hadn't considered that the advertisement was for only one position. One could certainly read it both ways. The only reason I am inclined to think there may be two positions is because the two fields are so dramatically different: the former specifies digital media with preference for Asian American studies scholars; the latter is more open-ended. After all, it seems like overkill to call for an Asian American digital media scholar on the one hand and then call for an open-ended race scholar when the former could address the latter.
  • Received request for additional publications from department chair (11/22) (X3). Do you happen to know if this request indicates a second level of long/short list, or is it unrelated? Were phone interviews mentioned in the request email? Yes, request was accompanied by notice of short/short list. Interviews not mentioned in request.
  • Did those of you notified of the short/short list apply to position one, position two, or both/either? I was notified of short list and only applied for position two. I only applied for consideration for the second position (if, in fact, it is a second position).
  • I applied for both, was on the long/short list, and received a rejection letter today (12/4)
  • There is only ONE position available!!! They are looking for someone for digital/networked media and/or race/ethnicity. (12/8) I wonder how much politics was involved in the writing and posting of these job ads. Why did they have to list two positions, and write the calls in a way that made it ambiguous as to whether there were one or two jobs??? Would have been simple enough to collapse 'the two postings into one description.
  • I interview in UC-San diego a few yrs back--Communication. Felt very badly treated--they did not even have a place/space for the candidate to wait in, between meetings etc...Nor did they take candidate to visit Dean. Faculty were unfriendly and uppity ....Don't know about other departments but from what I have heard, UC-Sd is not very collegial
  • I also interviewed there a few years ago and had the opposite experience. It's a long interview process, 1-on-1 interviews with individual faculty instead of group interviews, which makes for a long couple of days. Most of the faculty I met with were friendly, they all come from different disciplines so I'm sure there are internal factions. Grad students were intense, clearly play a role in dept business. I left the visit exhausted but also feeling like they'd read my work and had much to say about it. I also met with some faculty from other depts, got the feeling it was a very interdisciplinary place.
  • Any updates about campus visits? (12/12) Scheduling for late January and early February.
  • For the person who posted the above update about scheduling (or anyone who knows), have phone interviews already been conducted? No phone interviews to my knowledge. I believe they skipped them and just created a campus visit short list.
  • Alright, one more question for the person above with the insider knowledge (thanks, by the way): Any knowledge of whether or not the finalists have been contacted? Just asking because I was on the short-short list of folks asked to submit publications, yet I haven't received word one way or the other since then.
  • Campus visit candidates contacted (12/21)
  • One of the final candidates caught professors passing notes and giggling during his job talk.
  • one of my colleageus is interviewing either this week or next (1-5-2011)
  • Offer extended or accepted yet? (4/9/11)

  • Request for writing sample: 12/1

Rank: TT Assistant Professor

Area: Communication and/or Policy: Water Sustainability and Water-Related Issues

Notes: Search is being conducted jointly by 3 units within the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences: Communication Studies, Political Science, and Journalism & Mass Communication. Any faculty member hired will be appointed in one or more of these units, and must have a PhD by time of appointment.

  • - random comment: does anyone else think that this call is strange? Of course water-related issues are important environmental concerns, but I'm surprised that this is already an "area of research." Seems as if there will be few candidates who fit this call.
    • Position was created through a specific state grant to add a faculty member to the university who researches water issues. This was in response to the severe flooding that hit the area a few years ago.
    • Also, as an Iowa grad, I think it's a creative way for the university to actually secure faculty lines (which is difficult at the UI these days) by combining searches that draw upon the strengths in different departments and the needs of a state whose economy is largely agricultural. These are three historically strong departments, too. So, from a UI perspective, it's not that strange.

Deadline: 24 September 2010

Rank: Open Rank

Area: 3 areas: media effects; political communication, another area of specialization

Notes:

Questions:

Q: Anyone know anything about this search since it started a while back now?

A: 6 candidates brought in for campus job talks.

Q: Anyone know what area? - 3 are being brought for Political Communication, 3 for Media Effects.

Q: So are they not bringing anyone in for another area of specialization? My guess is that an "outstanding" candidate in "another area of specialization" would be considered, but the program is looking for candidates mostly in these specific areas...?

A: I think they are mostly looking for candidates in the 2 specific areas.

  • Has an offer been made to any of the 6 candidates brought in for campus job talks?
  • It's my understanding that job talks are going through December, probably till mid-month.
  • They are looking for already established senior faculty. They are only bringing in big names in the field, looking to hire at full professor level.
  • Heard that an offer has gone out to a candidate in the Pol. Comm. area (he is not at the senior/full prof. level though).
  • Got rejection letter dated Jan 14 (x2)
  • Heard several offers were made for the media effects position from a reliable source.

    • I have no clue about "internal" candidates, but at least a few people who've been out of grad school for a while, with top-tier pubs and years of experience have applied.
  • Received a rejection letter the week of March 7.

  • And they are??

I don't have my rejection letter in front of me, but it said something to the effect that they have a short list and I'm not on it, so it looks like they are planning to hire someone if they haven't already.

Notes:

  • heard rumor looking for a candidate of color.
  • are they only looking for candidates of color? can they do this? (12/5) - yes, they can legally do it if it is explicitly stated in the job call and/or the hire is part of an official recruitment effort of minority faculty, etc.
  • I think if they were ONLY looking for candidates of color they would have said so (see UMN job/postdoc, for instance).
  • The school is looking for someone to contribute to a narrow area (Digital Rhetoric), so it's unlikely that they can seek only a "candidate of color."
  • perhaps a candidate of color who also specializes in digital rhetoric will have an advantage over others?
  • probably. It seems like most job calls have something about especially encouraging members of underrepresented groups to apply. My feeling on this is that improving faculty diversity is desirable everywhere.

Link: CRTNET posting 26 October, archived: ttp://lists.psu.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind1010&L=CRTNET&T=0&F=&S=&P=35836

Deadline: 19 November 2010

Rank: TT Assistant Professor

Area: Rhetoric, Media, and Public Culture (engaged in rhetorical tradition but specialize in media and modes of civic performance, or visual media and public spectatorship, or reception and re-appropriation, etc.)

Notes:

  • I know an assistant prof at another university, and whom already has a book published, has been asked to apply. Just thought I'd mention that for those of us who are ABD.
  • FYI (11/12): An ad for what seems to be this same job was posted in the MLA Job Info. List with a different deadline: "The search committee will start reviewing files by November 30, but will continue reviewing files until the position is filled."
  • Cross-posted at Rhetoric/Composition 2011
  • Any updates?
  • on campus interviews have started (22jan)
  • Offers made to two candidates- TWO offers? Are you sure you're not confusing one of these offers with the other open position at Northwestern? Or, do you mean that two offers went out b/c one was declined. If there were really two offers, then this program must really be growing!
  • Yes, two offers to rhetoric candidates.
  • Just got the rejection email. The candidates who got the job have amazing accomplishments: The Department of Communication Studies at Northwestern University has completed its
search for an appointment in Rhetoric, Media, and Public Culture. We are very
pleased to announce that Jasmine Cobb and C. Riley Snorton have each accepted a
    position in the department.

  • As an NU alum, I am impressed with the accomplishments of these hires, and I have no doubt that they will be successful in their fields--too bad their fields are not rhetoric. I can say, too, as someone who will be chairing rhetoric search committees in the next few years, I will no longer consider NU PhDs.
  • (I second the poster above in praise but also concern. There seems to be a growing trend where "rhetoric" programs are not hiring "rhetoric"-trained faculty. While interdisciplinarity is a good thing, I find this disconcerting for the rhetorical tradition, which might be falling to the wayside...)
  • As a current NU faculty member, I am stunned by the apparent ignorance and complete lack of professionalism demonstrated by the self-identified "NU alum." You have stained the reputation of Northwestern. In the future, please either identify yourself by name or stop identifying yourself as a Northwestern alum. Should you or anyone else wish to have an open, candid, and serious discussion about the Northwestern program, the training of graduate students, and the challenges and prospects for rhetoric in the 21st century, I would be happy to participate in any appropriate forum. Robert Hariman
  • I am an NU alum as well, and I think it is highly inappropriate to accuse people of "staining" the department's reputation. Hiring patterns for the last ten years, the assault on the debate program, and other things are the stain. It's surely not unreasonable for alums who are not listened to by the Dean of the school and who may face reprisals by the still-powerful folk who are there to post anonymously. Get over it, Bob.
  • I think the point is that it is highly inappropriate to "no longer consider NU PhDs," as if that follows as a kind of principled--or even logical--position. None of the above interpretations of the NU program add up to a justification for that kind of statement; it's merely an anonymous reprisal.
  • I agree with the above poster. I am not associated with Northwestern, but it appears that the dissatisfaction over the choices the SC made is unwarranted. Furthermore, it bothers me that the dissatisfaction stems from the fact that the new faculty's work is considered as not rhetoric. Queer and African American studies are part of rhetorical studies. To suggest otherwise, well, you do stain the reputation of not just NU but also the field of rhetoric. And finally, these folks do come out of Communication programs. I would have hoped an NU alum would have known/noticed these things. I think you all should get over the fact that these people are more qualified than you are. I have been a job candidate for the past two years, and I applied to this position. And I can swallow my own pride and extend a warm congrats to Cobb and Snorton. Welcome to the field that celebrates white and straight studies!
  • Hello, it's the NU alum again. Upon reflection, I think that Hariman is right that my first post was unprofessional. Although I explicitly praised the accomplishments of Cobb and Snorton, by expressing my concerns about disciplinary hiring practices in the context of the announcement of their appointments, I implicitly disparaged their capabilities. To Professors Cobb and Snorton: I apologize. Let me say clearly and without qualification that your credentials are very impressive. I hope you have outstanding careers in the field of communication. (I want to be clear, too, that I deeply regret any consternation that may have been caused by my reference to future searches. I completely and fully retract that claim.)
  • FYI: A productive conversation discerning the field of rhetoric (which is underpinning many of the posts here) is going on at The Blogora: http://rsa.cwrl.utexas.edu/node/4994
  • I haven't returned to this wiki for some time, in part because I was following the discussion at the Blogora. I think the comments above all speak for themselves, but I do want to say two things: first, I haven't a clue what "the assault on the debate program" at NU could mean, especially after our recent investments in the program, hiring of Dan Fitzmier as the director, and winning the national title this year. Second, and most important, to the colleague to whom I first responded: apology accepted, and thank you for responding so thoughtfully to my admittedly heated remarks. --Robert Hariman

Notes:

They are doing very informal interviews (I think with everyone that applied) at NCA. I was contacted for one on 11.5

I'm somewhat baffled by how they're conducting the search. I got the perception from meeting with them at the job fair that they want a very particular type of candidate and that it should have been obvious from my CV that I didn't fit that "type." Why bother screening applicants who clearly aren't a good fit?

Any news since NCA? (12/13)

Rank: Tenured Full Professor/Head of Department of Communication Arts & Sciences

  • Conducting on-campus interviews

Pepperdine University 'POSITION 1'Edit

Link: Pepperdine HR website- http://seaver.pepperdine.edu/about/employment/faculty.htm#communication

Deadline: 1 November 2010

Rank: TT Assistant Prof

Area: Interpersonal, Organizational, Intercultural

  • Notes: The job announcement states that "The successful candidate will have a commitment to excellent teaching at the undergraduate level, a proven research track record, and will be actively involved in a Christian faith community." Question: Is it legal to require someone to be an active Christian to be a "successful candidate" for a job?
  • Yes, if it's a private university, then religious requirements of faculty are legal. I was told by a senior faculty member that, if I was unclear about what this meant, to e-mail search chairs asking them to explain further what "actively involved" entailed. For some Christian schools you have to sign a faith pledge of sorts, while for others you don't, etc.
  • I've heard that this means that you have to sign an agreement that you will instill Christian beliefs about the origin of humanity - i.e. evolution.
  • Do you mean creationism? How, exactly, would one teach creationism in a comm job?
  • If your understanding of Christianity is limited to creationism you're probably not right for this job.
  • My personal understanding of Christianity is by no means limited to creationism. I was simply looking for clarification of a statement made by above poster: '"I've heard that this means that you have to sign an agreement that you will instill Christian beliefs about the origin of humanity - i.e. evolution." This sentence makes no sense to me; I was wondering if they meant to say creationism instead of evolution.
  • It is not uncommon for a pledge signature. Many state schools require a pledge to uphold the state's constitution. It doesn't mean much. If you aren't right for the job, they will find reasons other than your signature on an oath.
  • This position specifically asks for "A statement indicating how the candidate will support the Christian mission of the University (http://seaver.pepperdine.edu/about/mission/)" (which is why I'm personally not applying).
  • Has anyone heard anything? (11/30)
  • Conducting phone interviews during 2nd and 3rd week of December. Already had mine. (12/17)
  • Received letter stating position has been filled (3/1)

Portland State UniversityEdit

Link: Chronicle of Higher Ed http://chronicle.com/jobs/0000647006-01

Deadline: 15 October 2010

Rank: 2 TT Assistant Professors

Areas: health, media, culture/intercultural/international, political

Notes:

  • Had 400 applications. Doing phone interviews to narrow down short-list.
  • Did the above poster get such an interview?
  • A colleague received a phone call 10/24 (Sunday, seriously?) evening. I guess PSU is trying to be as proactive as possible, which is a good thing. Always better to be informed than not!
  • They narrowed the 400 aps down to about 20. They already did first round phone interviews last week.
  • This position requires the job recipient to position themselves to secure external funding. Actual acquisition is probably not required for tenure, but a solid application probably is.
    • That is not true, and I am thinking you are the one who erased the discussion. I know someone who got an offer in this department that required external funding to gain tenure. I am sure a solid application is necessary, but so is external funding. DON'T ERASE CONVERSATIONS AGAIN.
  • Please note that the person who wrote the above bullet point curiously erased two comments and edited at least two others which criticized the outside funding requirement. And the lame dig about a "solid application" was really not necessary. As this was very obviously the work of a PSU SC member, I'm now counting my blessings not to have been on its short list. Unbelievable.
    • I agree. It is unbelievable. If you don't want to read things, don't read them. This wiki site is not for people to police and erase. These are important issues to talk about.
    • I also agree with people protesting the erasure of comments. Search committees obviously have a lot of power during this difficult job market - making snarky comments about "solid applications" is not very gracious. The person who erased criticisms about requiring applicants to commit to securing external funding is not willing to accept the fact that applicants have the right to make note of (and critique) the hoops applicants are made to jump through to get a job.
  • Received rejection mass email 11/23. (x7)
  • Has anyone been invited for on-campus interviews?
    • Not sure. I did not apply for the job, but someone I know who did said the rejection letter was along the lines of "you were not selected as a finalist." (x3)
    • yes I know someone who was invited for oncampus interviews. they pay something like $40K, I think I'm okay with the mass rejection email I got.
    • according to a reliable source, on-campus visits have been scheduled for both positions, and are currently taking place (12/5)
  • Position has been filled (1/28)
  • For those interested, the department's Facebook page lists finalists for the positions (2/15)

The University of Delaware Edit

Link: H-Net https://www.h-net.org/jobs/job_display.php?id=41595

Deadline: 1 February 2011 (start date 1 Sept. 2011)

Rank: Open, multiple tenure-track positions to be part of new Center for Political Communication

Area: Political Communication (in election campaigns, public policy, political and entertainment news media, civic engagement, social movements, the politics, media, technology and culture within global and historical contexts, etc.)

Notes: How many positions are they filling? Anyone know? I've heard one senior tenured position and one junior faculty

The ad makes it sounds like a whole herd -- or whatever a collective noun for political communication scholars might be (a noise? a shout? a paradigm?)

Got a correspondence for the job and that the process is going to take a really long time so if you get other job offers or career opportunities take them. They anticipate bringing candidates to campus in March. 2/4

I got this too -- was pleasantly surprised they would get in touch, wish more places were this professional. I also thought it intereting that they felt March interviews were not moving quickly, if you look through this list it would suggest that is pretty speedy as deadline was 1 Feb (posted 2/5)

Rumor from another board (political science) is that the search may not get completed. Anyone have any news on this one? (3/27)

No news but don't find the evidence on the other board (Political Science Job Rumors) particularly convincing. Thought their schedule of deadline of 1 Feb then interviews in March was a bit ambitious for open rank/open subfield search. Last year applied to a job that deadlined in December and got on-campus interview in March so if they didn't start reviewing until the beginning of February I don't think it odd it would take at least 8 weeks to finalise a short list.

Any news on this? (April 2011) Yeah, come on reject us already!

Just got an email saying they have "completed the search and will not be moving forward with the consideration of other candidates." Assume this means they hired someone(s). x 2 31 May 2011 time to move this puppy to completed searches ...

University of Georgia Edit

Area: Political rhetoric with inquiry in at least one of the following- public address, rhetorical and political theory, rhetorics of race, and/or social movements

Notes: will teach in area of expertise as well as large undergraduate lecture on public address and/or course on rhetoric and society.

  • This job appears to be the same that was announced last year; anyone know what happened with the previous search? See UGA entry on Comm Media job wiki from last year: http://academicjobs.wikia.com/wiki/Communication_and_Media_Studies_2009-2010
  • The individual offered the job declined. All applicants from last year were given an option to passively renew their application via email correspondence if they wanted to be considered again.
  • Anyone get one of these on-campus invites? http://www.uga.edu/spc/events.html
  • Good link, but are you sure this is accurate? If the deadline was 10/8, that's quite a quick turnaround to do all phone interviews and such by 10/19. ----I'm not sure about UGA's process, but in my experience on the job market last year, several R-1 universities did not do phone/NCA interviews and instead went straight to on-campus invites. I wonder if this is the case because qualifications for an R-1 position are generally a lot more narrow, such as the need for the candidate to have top pubs and a research specialty. Personally, coming from an R-1 myself I haven't heard of this. We always do NCA or phone interviews, and the other R-1 that I know is already doing on-campus interviews in the next few weeks did a round of phone interviews too. But, alas, the proof is in the pudding. Congrats to those interviewing at UGA, and best of luck as the process moves forward!
  • I heard from someone at UGA that the above link is not updated because campus invites have NOT been extended (10/21/10).
  • Also wanted to note from my experience (both hiring and being interviewed) that places don't always do phone interviews/conference interviews -- a lot of places go straight to on campus interviews but I would agree that it would be really unlikely that anything would happen in 11 days in a job search in academia -- would that it did so we could all get on with our lives.
  • unconfirmed rumor that invitations were extended for campus visits in early December (11/8). Anybody willing to confirm this?
  • Yes, three candidates have been invited for on-campus interviews in early Dec.
  • One of my friends was there recently for an interview, and they told this person that he/she was one of the first to interview...
  • So did an offer go out at the end of the fall semester after on-campus interviews were done????? (1/10/11) I'm a grad student in this dept, and we have heard no word, which leads me to assume whatever's happening is still in process.
  • an offer has been extended. And accepted
  • I heard that the offer was accepted, too (1/31)
  • So who took the position? Why are people not saying names this year? I heard it's a Maryland grad who has been out for a few years.
  • Yes, it was accepted by Belinda Stillion Southard. News note about Stillion Southard hire on UGA website: http://comm.uga.edu/2011/01/dr-belinda-stillion-southard

Position 2: Assistant Professor in AdvertisingEdit

Link: Chronicle of Higher Ed

  • I had a phone interview with the search chair (Oct 26) (x2)
  • Anyone received a campus visit yet?
  • they are conducting on-campus job talks this week (11/22)
  • does anyone know how many candidates they are bringing in?
  • A colleague received a campus interview, said 4 candidates were invited
  • I heard that an offer has been extended; can anyone confirm this? (12/18)
  • Offer was accepted

Position 3: Lecturer in RhetoricEdit

  • (un)related to TT job- does anyone have info about the lecturer job opening(s) in speech communication at UGA? I heard about them but must've missed the posting.
  • link to 2 open lecturer positions at UGA in 1) interpersonal/health communication, and 2) rhetoric: http://comm.uga.edu/2010/11/job-search-lecturer-in-interpersonal--health-communication-and-lecturer-in-rhetoric/
    • Requesting letters of recommendation (2/2) (x2)
    • An offer has been extended and accepted for the Lecturer in Rhetoric position. Did you or someone you know accept, or is this just based on an email from the search committee. I received an email saying that finalists had to get their recommendations submitted by the middle of the month.
    • Not reading into anything here. Someone I know received a rhetoric lecturer position at UGA.
    • Are you sure you're not thinking of the tenure track position at UGA? There is a tenure track position and a lecturer position, they are different.
    • Maybe there are two rhetoric lecturer openings, but I second the person above who says there is a rhetorician who got offered and accepted to be a lecturer there.
  • Unsure about the information above, but I was invited for a phone interview 3/2. No candidates will be brought to campus and the committee hopes to make a decision in about two weeks.
  • Offer extended and accepted: March 28, 2011.

  • It is for a second position. (12/18)
  • Search chair says that anyone who submitted an application for the first position will also be considered for the second position. (12/18)
  • Any updates? (2/3)
  • I believe an offer was extended for the first positions (2/6)
  • Can anyone confirm this rumor? (2-16)
  • Any word on the second position? (3-2)
  • An offer (at least for one of the positions) was extanded in early March
  • Received rejection later stating both positions had been filled. (4-11) X2

  • Any news here??
  • Is this search even still going on? I received a rejection email stating they've made a hire (3/30).

  • Meet and Greets did take place at NCA. (11/22)

  • Phone interviews (for those who were NOT at NCA) are currently being finished up; search committee will then compile a short list of candidates to invite to campus (12/7)

POSITION 1: Political CommunicationEdit

Link: http://communication.missouri.edu/position_announcement.htm

Deadline: October 1, 2010

Rank: Assistant Professor

Area: Political Communication (open to specialization)

Notes:

  • I applied for this job but haven't heard much; anyone got any news? I hear they're doing phone interviews (10/28). Anyone else know the status?
  • On campus interviews are scheduled, currently underway (11/6).
  • I have it on strong authority this position has been offered and accepted (11/29)
  • Rejection letter emailed 12/2 (x2). A candidate has indeed accepted. Does anyone know who it is?
  • I do know, but I'm not comfortable disclosing until the contract has been signed (its not me--12/3).
  • I didn't get the job but have since taken one elsewhere; I heard that it went to someone from Kansas. Anyone care to confirm? (2/15).
  • Yes, it went to someone from Kansas: Benjamin Warner.

POSITION 2: Interpersonal CommunicationEdit

Link: http://communication.missouri.edu/position_announcement.htm

Deadline: October 1, 2010

Area: Interpersonal Communication

University of Nevada, Las VegasEdit

Link: Sent via CRTNET(September 17th)

Deadline: Review began on October 18th

Rank: Visiting Assistant Professor (2011-2012)

Area: Rhetorical Studies

Notes: Budgetary approval for the position is pending. 4/4 load.

No update on this position? It's been awhile (Nov. 12)

  • They acknowledged reciept of my application, but I haven't heard anything either. I wonder if they're still waiting on budgetary approval.
  • Received call to schedule phone interview Nov. 9. (x1). Interviews will be conducted week of Thanksgiving (post-NCA). Was told by Chair that only phone interviews would be conducted and no campus visits will be made due to budgetary constraints and one-year term.
  • Spoke with chair. The position is one year only with no chance of renewal--it is a fill in for a prof taking a year off. They have funding for the position for the one year only.
  • 12/11: Offer extended and declined. -- why did you decline the offer? (12/29)
  • Mostly because of personal factors unrelated to the position (the offer was competitive). They were really fantastic throughout the entire process and the position promises to be productive and interesting. Just not a fit for me at this point.
  • Is UNLV looking for another candidate now, or is the search failed?
  • I heard (gossip, though) that another person was offered this position and accepted it.

  • I believe the original poster meant NM state, as the section for NM state indicates that NCA interviews were conducted.
  • Perhaps informal meetings were conducted at NCA? Will the first poster care to elaborate? (12/4)
  • For a fact, informal meetings were not conducted at NCA. (12/15)
  • The search committee has picked the three finalists and they will be setting up interviews soon. (12-15)
  • On campus interviews with 3 people have been scheduled (12-29).
  • Received e-mail indicating search was successful (2-8).

Notes:

  • Contacted for additional materials (11/2)
  • Q: Are they looking for scholars using social scientific or critical approaches? Interpersonal/Organizational in the context of Gender sounds paradoxical to me.
  • this is a more critical, rhetorical, critical/cultural department, but they may want ss.
  • Is there any word on this one?
  • they are doing campus interviews, one of them was yesterday (January 21)
  • I cannot confirm this, but I recall hearing from a faculty member at another university that his/her colleague accepted this job. So, I think this search is closed because it went to an assistant professor from somewhere else (March 5).

Notes:

  • phone interview end of September (x2). said they'd be scheduling campus interviews for mid-Oct and hoped to complete search by end of October. Received rejection letter by mail mid-November (x3). They're also sending rejection letters to those who've done phone interviews. (x2)
  • Position has been filled.
  • Anyone have info on this hire -- i.e. did it go to an English or communications Phd, a current assistant prof or an ABD, etc.?

University of OklahomaEdit

Position 1: CommunicationEdit

Link (NCA)

Deadline: 15 December 2010

Rank: TT Assistant Professor

Area: Open, but encourage organizational communication focus

Notes:

  • At NCA, Dr. Kramer said he would begin the first round of reviews on December 1.
  • A colleague has a phone interview this week. (12/7).
  • It seems a bit odd to have phone interviews scheduled before the deadline has even passed. Any insights?
  • The job was posted over 3 months ago. Any serious applicants would already have materials in already. And the phone interviews are just to narrow down the list. Quality applications received may still receive phone interview.
  • Or, "serious" applicants would also have other deadlines, and may have believed that deadlines are deadlines. I wonder if the University's EEOC office knows that "serious applicants" somehow "knew" to disregard the deadline.
  • From the comment above it doesn't look like the deadline was disregarded. Plus, a "serious" candidate wouldn't wait until the last minute to send in materials.
  • There are all sorts of good reasons why a "serious" candidate might wait to the last minute: scheduling a defense, waiting on acceptance of a conference paper, waiting to submit or receive publication information on an article, etc.--all of which fairly seriously affect the strength of a candidate's application. If a SC posts a deadline, it should be adhered to. If they have no intention of doing so, don't put a deadline and instead denote that the search is immediate and ongoing (as many are). Moreover, a deadline implies that this is set so that members of the SC can form their own schedules and go through a process together on deciding on candidates. SC's which do not adhere to a deadline may not be following proper protocols, including the input of the full committee. We could therefore just as easily say that committees which don't adhere to deadlines are not "serious." (x3!)
  • A friend of mine has an on campus interview scheduled for January.
  • Do people not realize that search committees start looking at files before the deadlines especially when there are lots of candidates? (x1!)
  • I think people do realize this, and this it's perfectly appropriate for SC's to go through applications as they receive them in order to sort them into piles and make a shortlist. But contacting people on that shortlist before the deadline seems to me to be highly unfair to the other candidates if there's a posted deadline. (x2! And, unfortunately, this seems to be happening more often... see comments about one of the Wisconson-Madison jobs this year)
  • Oftentimes it's perfectly acceptable for committees to review applications and contact candidates before a deadline. They just can't extend an offer before the deadline. So the lesson, for better or worse, is to get your materials in as quickly as possible. (x2!!)
  • Offer was made and accepted.
  • Received a rejection email, acknowledging that an offer was accepted (2/14)
