Appalachian State University (NC) - TT Asst. Professor, Biblical Studies

The Department of Philosophy and Religion at Appalachian State University invites applications for a tenure track, nine-month, faculty position within the Religious Studies program at the level of Assistant Professor, beginning July 1, 2015. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in religious studies with a focus on Biblical Studies sufficient to teach upper division courses in hand by the date of appointment. Applicants must have a strong background in method and theory that complements existing strengths in the department, and the ideal candidate will have a record of published scholarship and evidence of teaching excellence.

The teaching load is 3 courses per semester for faculty with an active research agenda. Teaching responsibilities may include introductory courses to NT, OT, and World Religions, as well as upper level courses in Biblical Studies and Method and Theory. Faculty members are expected to maintain an active program of scholarship as well as participate in service activities.

Appalachian State University is a member institution of the sixteen-campus University of North Carolina. Located in Boone, North Carolina, the university has approximately 18,000 students, primarily in bachelors and masters programs in both liberal arts and applied fields. Boston College (MA) - School of Theology and Ministry - Open-Rank Tenure-Track Position in New Testament

The Ecclesiastical Faculty of the Boston College School of Theology and Ministry seeks applications for a full-time, open-rank, tenure-track position in New Testament with appointment to begin in August of 2015. Candidates should be prepared to teach courses appropriate for the Master of Divinity, as well as offerings for other theology and ministry students at the master’s and doctoral levels concerning most or all of the following topics: Synoptic Gospels, Acts of the Apostles, John’s Gospel and Johannine literature, the writings of Paul and the later Pauline writings, the Book of Revelation, and Christian Apocryphal Literature.

Candidates must be committed to core Catholic teachings and approach their teaching and research in an interdisciplinary way, with sensitivity to pastoral needs and cultural diversity. Applicants should be able to demonstrate strong teaching and research ability, including the ability to contribute to the formation of Jesuits and other candidates approved for ordination studies, and of women and men for lay ecclesial ministries and for service rooted in faith. Brown University (RI) - TT Asst. Professor, Early Christianity / New Testament

The Department of Religious Studies at Brown University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the assistant professor level with a specialization in early Christianity/New Testament to begin July 1, 2015.

QUALIFICATIONS: This successful candidate will able to support graduate training in New Testament; have expertise in early Jewish history and texts; be familiar with theory and methods of religious studies; and contribute broadly to our undergraduate curriculum. This position is integral to the department's "Religions in the Ancient Mediterranean" graduate track and programming. Preference will be given to candidates who have successfully defended their dissertaion by the time of application.

Church Divinity School of the Pacific/Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary - Old Testament

This Old Testament faculty position, housed at the Church Divinity School of the Pacific and shared by Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary, will address the evolving curricular needs of both schools while having primary administrative and advising responsibilities at the Church Divinity School of the Pacific. The successful candidate will teach foundational and elective courses at both the M.Div. and Ph.D. levels in the ecumenical and interreligious Graduate Theological Union, and enable students to draw from the wisdom of their particular traditions and articulate the distinctiveness of those traditions.

We seek a scholar in early career who bridges the line between the academy and the church, and an engaging, dynamic teacher who can draw students into the task of relating biblical texts to Christian life and ministry in the world. We seek candidates who employ hermeneutical methodologies that draw out the relation of sacred texts to living questions found in contemporary contexts, such as postcolonial, feminist, and secular post-Enlightenment understandings.

Candidates should have the capacity to teach Hebrew, including in online modalities. They should possess an integrated understanding of different aspects of theological education and be willing and able to work with colleagues in all aspects of graduate professional theological education and to engage in continuing education in an ecumenical setting. Candidates should also be eager to engage with the pastoral and formational processes of candidates preparing for ministry, ordained and lay.

This is a ranked position at the assistant or associate level for an initial appointment of three years, starting July 1, 2015, with potential tenure-track following the initial appointment. CDSP and PLTS welcome candidates with an earned PhD at time of employment.

Durham University (UK) - Senior Lecturer in OT/Hebrew Bible

The Department of Theology and Religion at Durham University has a long-standing tradition of outstanding research and is widely recognized as one of the leading departments in its field. In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise it was ranked first in the UK, while its teaching quality is shown in its consistently obtaining exceptionally high rankings in both National Student Surveys and independent league tables. Its strengths range across Biblical Studies (Old Testament / Hebrew Bible, New Testament, ancient Judaism, and Biblical languages), Christian theology (Greek and Latin patristics, the history and theology of late antiquity and the early middle ages, the Reformation, doctrinal and philosophical theology, and theological ethics), and the study of religion (the anthropology, sociology and psychology of religion). Eastern University (PA) - Professor, Biblical Studies (New Testament)

Eastern University, a university of the liberal arts and sciences located in St. Davids, Pennsylvania, invites applications for a full-time, open-rank position in Biblical Studies (New Testament) in the Department of Christian Studies, College of Arts and Sciences, beginning August 2015.   

The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. (ABD considered) in New Testament. Assistant Professor - Open Discipline Search. The roots of Ecumenical Theological Seminary go back to 1957 with the founding of the Institute for the Advancement of Pastoral Studies, the first center for continuing education for clergy in the United States. Position Description: Reporting to the Chair of Literature and Philosophy, the Assistant Professor of Religious Studies will teach three courses per semester (with the occasional possibility of additional reassigned time for research), including courses in Biblical studies as well as general courses that introduce students to theory and methods in the study of religion. Greensboro College (NC) - Assistant Professor of Biblical Studies

Greensboro College, Greensboro, North Carolina, announces a tenure-track position in Biblical Studies at the Assistant Professor level starting August 2015 in the Department of Religion and Philosophy. We seek a biblical scholar with the capacity to teach introductory and upper-level courses in both Old and New Testament. • the college has had very serious financial problems in the past and has even had accreditation issues because of them (if you have any questions about the veracity of posters here, try googling things yourself!).  the previous holder of this position was essentially pushed out, despite doing an inordinate amount of service, being very popular with students, and publishing more than enough to be tenured.  not the most stable place.  apply, but be aware, and ask good questions if you get to the campus stage.  (and don't censor people (i am NOT the first commenter, and i will not be applying for this position) who try to add context.  listen to all who share insight, but keep your own counsel.)

Grove City College (PA) - Biblical and Religious Studies

Grove City College is accepting applications for a regular, full time faculty position in the Department of Biblical and Religious Studies, beginning in the fall of 2015. Successful candidates must possess a Ph.D. in a relevant area, with seminary training desired. Scholars in the field of Old Testament studies are particularly welcomed to apply. However, strong candidates in either Systematic Theology or Theological Ethics will also be considered.

But several recent hires in Oxford have been on the more junior end, and all 'University Lecturers' (to use the erstwhile internal Oxford lingo) are on this scale.
• The previous comments are not strictly untrue. But have a look at the job description. (1) They expect research & publications, graduate as well as undergraduate teaching experience, some other competencies (grants, syllabus development), etc. Also (2) title and the salary are relatively 'open' but if memory serves junior Oxford grades like postdoctoral fellows, departmental lecturers, miscellaneous college teaching posts etc. are paid quite a bit less (as are junior appointments at other UK universities). As a result, these high-spec Oxbridge jobs envisage, and usually attract, a 'post-postdoctoral' or early mid-career crowd. So while of course a very junior applicant could in principle bewitch a committee and carry the day (as one did recently in OT there), the competition normally involves a highly international field of applicants with a monograph or two and a previous job under their belt. Salary: this relates to rank and responsibility and has nothing to do with the cost of living. True, only the independently wealthy or fiscally suicidal now live in places like North Oxford, where family-sized houses run to either seven figures or eight. But it's my impression that recent hires (both junior and senior!) either downsize on space and expectations or live in the (gorgeous) countryside and commute.

This is an exciting opportunity for a scholar to join the Faculty and undertake teaching on the Religion, Theology and the Bible (RTB) degree course. You will have a research specialisation in Biblical/Religious studies and will become a member of the department aligned to your specific discipline. You will also be a member of the Sheffield Institute for Interdisciplinary Biblical Studies (SIIBS). Research interests in the New Testament and Biblical Greek especially Historical Jesus/Gospels are sought, however we also encourage applications from candidates with research interests in historical, textual and/or literary aspects of religion, as well as in the philosophy of religion. You will be expected to contribute strongly to teaching and research and will also undertake management and administrative duties.

• I have been following the Biblical Studies job market for about a decade.  This is the worst year I have ever seen in Hebrew Bible.  Unfortunately, it is hard to imagine how more than a handful of the people getting their Ph.D.'s in HB now or in subsequent years will ever find full-time positions.  Programs are going to have to stop admiitting people.  It's just not ethical.

• Just out of curiosity: why would you have followed the market for a decade? And would you care to give a thumbnail sketch of any trends you've noticed during this period?

• Yup.  Too bad I didn't know this seven years ago, when it could have made a difference in my life.
• Not ethical? Nobody promised us a job on the other end, and nobody coerced us into the program. Does it absolutely suck to be unemployed/unemployable right after graduating from a top tier school? Yes, but it's our own fault and not a matter of any schools ethics. If we are victims, we are our own victims. 
• I'd say the ethicality of these graduate programs depends on how accurate a picture they give to prospective/newly admitted students.  To admit students and conveniently fail to mention that only 20% of recent graduates have found permanent/tenure-track positions could be considered a sin of omission.  One could also say that programs ought to admit fewer students to help thin out the market, but from what I can tell most of the top tiers don't admit more than 2-4 students in a given area each year.
