This page is for Art History searches taking place during 2008-2009, for jobs with start dates in fall 2009. See also the pages for last year and next year.

There is room for discussion on the talk page.
To the person who keeps deleting useful information from this page -- HELLO? Is that really the kind of person you want to be? Go ahead and move irrelevant material to the talk page, but silently deleting useful comments with no explanation is the mark of the kind of twisted, parasitic soul that we all hope grad school doesn't make us into. Let's hope it's not too late for you, and try some self-examination to see if this really makes you feel good about yourself and the kind of person you are.
The Wiki Bandit is back again. 4/23 What does Wiki Bandit mean?????
- Could those people who are lucky enough to be accepting new jobs please NOT erase all the previous information when the job is accepted? Next year, when people are freaking out about why a search is taking so long, it would be very helpful to review the glacial speed at which many searches are conducted as well as information learned during this year's searches.
PLEASE be considerate and DO NOT post info here about a first choice candidate rejecting an offer. Anyone who makes it to the campus interview stage, frankly even to CAA interviews, is talented and qualified. Many people who will end up with the jobs listed here may not have been the first choice of search committees. But it's not helpful for them to know that and it kind of undermines the whole search process. Please don't spoil the joy and relief of a candidate who gets a job offer by revealing here that they were not the school's first choice. They may figure that out on their own but this is NOT the place to publicize that information.
- Please do NOT erase information even when the job is filled. It is a useful record of timetables and such.

Any idea about how the process works? Do we all find out mid-April? (3/21) In previous years those rejected have been notified via mail mid-April. Not sure about those accepted (because I have YET to get one of those letters. Perhaps third time is a charm?)
I am a Pre-Doc fellow from 2007-08; got an acceptance via email by April 1. Good luck!

Interview for pre-doc scheduled (1/21). Any news post-interview? Should hear this week (week of 2/9). Acceptance via phone yesterday (2/9). Notice of alternate status received via e-mail (2/13). Rejection letter by email. (2/13)

Columbia University Mellon Postdoctoral Teaching Fellowship[]
- Application Deadline: 2 February 2009
CAA interview/s scheduled: 2/20
E-mail confirmation that application received and that they have "begun the review process" (2/25) x3 (hmm odd to send out when they're interviewing at CAA) FWIW, last year they did not interview at CAA. Applicants received invitations to on-campus interviews, which I believe took place in late March.
E-mail confirmation of application received + note that they were missing one reference letter, so request to have it re-sent (2/26) x2
- On-campus visit scheduled: 3/17 [Is this for real? Sorry for being a bit jaded after the claim of CAA interviews last month! Anyone else hear anything? Thanks.] 3/19 Original campus-visit poster here. It does appear to be for real - or else I'm out airfare to NYC! The interviews are, remarkably, only 30 minutes long with 15 minutes for HR stuff. Maybe I should have said "on-campus interview"? Anyway, I have no idea what that CAA bit is about up there. Hope this helps.
- Yes, that does help. Thank you and good luck!
- Thanks! I'd be curious if anyone else knows more about this process, i.e., how many they interview, how they select, etc.
- last year they interviewed three i believe, in early april, for only one position. how they select, god knows!
- does somebody know something about the other open position at Columbia, the Director of MA studies in Critical and Curatorial Studies? Why is it not on this list?
- re: non tenure Columbia Director MA Program, interviews set up in early April (to accommodate the Columbia Renaissance search). Anyone know how many candidates, pretty please? There are three candidates, interviews start this coming week (4/5)
- yes, first interview and talk will be on the 7th of april, and the last on april 16th.
- 4/15: Any post-doc post-interview news? 4/15 (later): None here. I'm still not over the fact that the visit was so short! 4/15 none here, either, but I can only imagine that this is because they have made offers to other people. Still, you'd think that they would send a rejection letter in a more timely way.
- 4/22: Any post-doc post-interview news, yet? 4/25: Nope, nothing. 4/28 I was sadly not among the chosen, but I do know that at least one candidate has been contacted and given a contract.
- 4/23: Any word on Columbia Director MA Program? Was the last interview really last week? Why oh why are these two searches running so late?
- 5/3: non tenure Columbia MA Director position offered to and accepted by outgoing Columbia Post-doc.
- 5/5: Kaira Cabañas, Craig Peariso, or other?

- Offer Accepted By: Pauline Ota
- I interviewed at CAA and they claimed they would be doing campus interviews the week of March 9. Since that's next week, I would say that those of us who don't hear anything by end of day tomorrow (3/6), can perhaps think we didn't make it to the campus interview. I really liked these people and felt my interview went well, so did two others who interviewed there. Perhaps they're just kind and engaged people. With any luck, with so many available positions, schools wont all invite the same 3 candidates for campus interviews. Good luck to all as we wait for news.
Same here. Heard nothing from them (3/6). They were really nice people -- but that's all.
Yet, perhaps their decisions and setting up interviews is taking longer than they anticipated . . . wouldn't be the first time a search didn't run like clockwork. Still hoping for some good news.
Thanks for the information. I did not hear from them either (3/7). I dont think their decisions on setting up interviews takes longer. I went to their department webpage and saw that they already put three interview events on their academic calendars......
Thanks for spotting the info on their calendar. Oh well. At least it's good to know to cross this one off my list.
The offer is accepted, does any one know what got it? thanks.
Northwestern University, East Asian Art[]
- Application Deadline: 1 December 2008
(Canceled now because of successful senior Near Eastern hire? Anyone know?) No. Ancient Near Eastern hire resulted in the appointment of Professor Ann Gunter. A completely separate line/position. See http://www.wcas.northwestern.edu/arthistory/faculty/gunter.htm Just FYI, Sarah Teasley in Japanese Art appears to now be at Royal College of Art and not Northwestern (per her CAA presentation). This might suggest they are looking for a Japan-oriented person, just speculation. Anyone with local info?
your are probably right, I am in Chinese art and received the rejected letter (3/1).
- For what it's worth, Sarah Teasley is definitely now on staff at the RCA (in their design program).

Anyone interview with these folks? Care to share your impressions or any info on when they're planning campus interviews?
CAA interview seemed to go well, interviewers shared info about dept, said campus interviews would be in March. Did anyone else who interviewed at CAA receive a followup yet (good or bad)?
just received rejection letter. (3/14) x2
anyone know if they hired anyone for the fall?
looks like this went to Ingrid Furniss (formerly in TT position at Univ of TX, Arlington; PhD from Princeton in 2005), she is listed as teaching the Asian art courses on registrar's website
Ohio State University, Asian Art[]

Those of you who got interviews with U. Utah, may I ask what your areas are- modern or contemporary Asia. I hear that is what they are looking for. Good luck!
I interviewed with them at CAA, most of the conversation was about research approaches. Clearly the ability to teach mod/cont Asian art would be a plus, but they seem to be interviewing people across a wide range of research foci (pre-modern as well as more mod/cont). Both interviewers falrly new to the dept so this decision might take a while as other faculty chime in with their thoughts in post-CAA meetings.
Heard they made offer to candidate who did not accept. They have listed same position for 2010-11.
Could we please know what period the person who declined was working in? Was it contemporary or pre-modern?
Case Western Reserve University, Asian Art[]
- Application Deadline: 15 January 2009
- Phone Interviews Scheduled n/a
- CAA Interview Scheduled: 1/30 (via email)
- Campus Visit Scheduled: 3/6 (via email)
- Offer Made: yes
- Offer Accepted By: Noelle Giuffrida
those who got interviewed, could you share some insights? positive or negative about the interviewers?
Great interview, nice people, all fairly senior members of the dept. Again, this job is drawing not only recent PhDs but those already ensconced in good TT jobs looking to move to Case Western. The CMA collection is the obvious draw for most of us. Pre-modern emphasis including the ablity to teach China, Japan, Korea, India seems important here. Ability to produce a book for tenure is also of paramount importance as at all research schools. Decisions on campus interview invites might be going out this week (ending 3/6) since they are off on Spring break next week. Fingers crossed for everyone, good luck.
CMA won't open until 2012, any expectation in working with curators at the Museum?
is anyone getting the campus interview? if don't mind sharing. (see above)
Three candidates were scheduled to campus interviews--1st week and 3rd week of April. All the candidates are very junior, recently graduated.
Campus Interviews for this actually began the 3rd week of MARCH, just to clarify.

How was your interview experience with the A.H. dep't at JCU? I thought the guys were friendly, but Linda was a bit distant and uninterested.
I thought this opening is for African or Pre-Columbia? They advertised for "traditional art of Asia, Sub-saharan Africa, or Ancient Americas"
Course load is 3/3, with 2 courses per semester teaching survey of world art. Survey of Western art, I think.
Has anyone heard anything from these guys after CAA?
Not me. Will they do campus interviews?
report that job was accepted by Sherin Lee Hwang, specialist in modern Chinese painting (this is not correct)
Just a question: what is meant by "traditional art of Asia"? I thought that perhaps it meant "classical" art, as in the Sherman Lee survey. Weird and stodgy, but never mind. However, now that I learn they've hired somebody doing modern Chinese painting I'm completely confused. What the hell were they looking for--and did they find it? Or did they, rather, change their minds along the way?
Who is Sherin Lee Hwang? I can tell you for certain that she did not get the job.
This seems to be true. A professor by the name of Liu is listed as instructor for the general art history and asian art surveys for the Fall semester.
seems like this went to Bo Liu (PhD, Univ of Michigan)

looks like this went to recent Penn PhD in Himalayan art (listed as teaching Arts of India in Fall 2009) - Reply: I wouldn't make this assumption based on a single course in the book.

anyone interview for this?
I am a S. Asian specialist and I interviewed with them at CAA. The 2 interviewers were nice enough, but very aloof and even a bit cocky- even commented on how many outstanding applications they'd received. Thanks! Also mentioned that it would be quite a while before candidates would hear from them, and that the position hinged upon funds. They want to fill a Western a.h. visiting position first.

- did this position survive the cuts? is anyone interviewed by this school? it is not a good place to work. They search this position every two years in past 7-8 years, and this is the first time that they made it as 2 year position. Just imagine that they hired someone who only stayed there for 2 years, whether by choice or not.
- NOTE: This is a new position, in fact.

- CAA Interview Scheduled: Emailed for CAA interview on 1/30
- Campus Visit Scheduled: Any news here? I haven't heard anything (3/17). I interviewed at CAA and have heard nothing, if that makes you feel better! (3/19).
- Offer Made: I heard that they made an offer to someone. Surprised that the finalists didn't mark their progress on this site./ Once at the campus interview stage the site probably isn't as useful to those still in the running! Congrats to whoever received an offer! (3/28) I suppose that's true, but the rest of us would welcome any news. Do unto others, after all. Yes, congratulations are in order.(3/29) I have to say it is strange that all communication with candidates (those who interviewed) halted abruptly after CAA. They were very communicative up to that point. (3/31) Is anyone else thinking there might have been an inside candidate? (4/1) I admit to being blindsided in the interview. The focus of the position, as described to me in the interview, was MUCH more narrow than the original posting led me to believe. Also, at no point did they ask me about teaching. That surprised me. (4/2) I agree with the last post - much more narrow than I thought too. (4/2) Thanks. It makes me feel better to know I was not the only one to feel this way. (4/3) Did anyone here interview with Wheaton? I thought there might have been an inside candidate there. Posted a question about it under the Wheaton entry. I wouldn't be able to tell if there was an inside candidate for Middlebury. Although the narrowness of the position's focus could be explained that way. (4/3)
Received a nice letter of rejection today (I interviewed at CAA). I will be curious to see who was hired. (4/16)

Is this a usual practice? (3/18) Millersville is part of the unionized state system in Pennsylvania. All faculty salaries are charted out by steps in the state employee contract which is publicly available. (3/23) Makes sense. Thanks. (4/2) - Offer Accepted: 4/16

I have heard nothing since the email of 2/3 mentioned above (4/5). I thought I was the only one who was getting impatient with this one. It seems odd that there hasn't been movement on this. (4/8) I just checked Ramapo's online job listings, and they're still posting this position. But I can't imagine why we haven't heard anything? (4/9) Rejection email received 4/21/09.

Is this search still going ahead or canceled due to the financial crisis? Rumors are flying. - I received an acknowledgment letter dated 1/9/09 saying that the search committee is reviewing applications and will be in touch by February 9th at the latest - I'm not sure if only UMass-Amherst has a hiring freeze or if it's the entire UMass system (1/27) The search is still on because they are scheduling interviews.

Any idea what the situation is for those applicants not attending CAA? That is, anyone not attending CAA receive an interview invite? I interviewed for this job last year at CAA when it was posted as an adjunct only. I asked at the time if the job could be upgraded to tenure track. They said yes. They have since hired an adjunct before listing it this year as a tenure track position. To anyone applying please be advised that you may be up against an inside track candidate who's already worked there this year as an adjunct.
Anyone would tell you that being an adjunct is much more of a disadvantage than an advantage when the position is "upgraded" to a tenure-track position!!
Feb 3rd - Fair warning, though a risk worth taking! FWIW, I interviewed for the temp position last year, too, and found the folks at App State congenial and professional.
True they appear so. It is just that their administration is terrible. Feb 10-They are searching for a Chair this year again? Anybody knows about this?
2/17 : Don't know about their admin/chair situation, but I am wondering about the search. What's that "Jan. 16 (phone)" about? I didn't interview with them until February. Anybody hear anything new?
4/15: Any word on this, other finalists? I assume this ship has sailed, but I wouldn't be surprised by an administrative hold-up, either.

Word is that XXXXX accepted the position, but I cannot solidly confirm this. -- That's odd, I heard it went to XXXXX!? But I also cannot solidly confirm. (3/14) Neither rumor is accurate. (3/15) Do you know who got it? XXXXX was not even among the three who came to campus. (3/18) Who were the three campus visits? The search is ongoing and calls for discretion, out of fairness to the finalists. (5/4) An adjunct will teach Roman art in the fall (5/14) Is this the Gallatin School job? That one has been settled (offered-accepted), but I'm not sure if this post is about something else.

People, don't believe everything you read here. I don't know who it is who claims to know "the god's honest truth," but they are wrong. (Fine. Back it up with information. Can you? Has anyone been offered a position? Until otherwise proven, it looks at least two of these were fake searches. And by the way, thank you to whomever shared their experience on their campus visit.)
The details of an ongoing search are obviously confidential, but I can assure you that whoever posted the purported experience did not have a campus visit.
Departments don't do searches for fun. Perhaps budget cuts and the financial situation dramatically changed the nature of the searches that were already in progress?
Offer made and accepted.

Uh... why did someone erase news that someone had a CAA interview? Is the Wiki Bandit at it again this year? Does the wiki bandit look like the Hamburgler? Because that is how I am picturing him/her. Rejection letter received 3/18--yes, and I thought it was a very nice letter. I haven't received it -- did it say that an offer had been made?

Rejection e-mail upon query. A pool of candidates has been selected -- you lucky ones should be hearing from them soon. (3/12; not soon enough! SC told me that she would be calling references this week, so maybe she is still doing that for the selected pool (3/13); decided to get rid of that weird scroll box, and still no word.... (3/18) Me, either. Either their timeline is slowing down or none of the five of us get to write a mash note to the Dominicans, and that's statistically unlikely. (3-18) I had been told that updates would be given in mid-March or slightly thereafter. (3/21) I am not one of them, but finalists have begun to be contacted. (3/22) How did you get this info? (3/23:) I was asked to write a statement, due ten days ago. I have not heard any updates since. Has anyone else? (3/23) No, but my understanding was that the president and maybe another person would review them. Good luck. (3/23) Thank you. You too! I will be sure to update here if I hear anything, and hope others continue to do the same.

I see that English and History both scheduled campus interviews about two weeks ago. Sounds like they have a final list of candidates already. But did any art historians get a campus interview yet? (1/31)
Heard that at least one Art Historian was brought for campus visit.
Does this information come from a reliable source?
I didn't post the info about the campus visit, but I heard that there was no art historian brought to campus. I'm not sure which source is more reliable.
An art historian was definitely brought to campus.
Any news on this? Just curious... (2 Eighteenth-century scholars and one Italian Baroque specialist--has anyone heard WHO was chosen?)
According to the History wiki, rumor has it that the job went to an advanced asst. art historian.
Accepted by Alexander Marr, currently at University of St Andrews
UC San Diego: Early Modern Art Historian (1600-1900)[]
Does the ad for a 1-year position mean this search is officially over? (1/27/09) No. The UCSD job web site lists two separate searches - the temporary one is actually part of a search for a pool of lecturers in a variety of fields. The TT job is still listed, as well. (1/27) hmm, has anyone heard anything? Not a peep - I wish these folks (not just UC San Diego, but all the rest) would get on the ball and schedule CAA interviews - I am waiting to buy my plane ticket until I know I will actually have someone to talk to in LA! (2/13)
- e-mail message from administrator indicating review is still underway, and a short list will be compliled in a week or so. (2/18) Q: Did you ask them about the state of the search or did they send out this email? Thanks. A: I wrote them requesting an update - it was not a BCC e-mail.
So it has been about three weeks since the positing about the email. Any news since? Zippo (3/7) Nothing here either. (3/9)
I checked the website. They are already conducting on-campus interviews. Drat!

(1/28: Anyone heard anything at all, either decisions or if it is canceled etc.?) I haven't heard anything about this search either--positive or negative. We are one week away from CAA, so perhaps it has been cancelled? <In the past U of C has appeared to conduct simultaneous searches in multiple fields but filled only one line. The Latin American search is further along; perhaps this and the Med. search are being kept in reserve in case no one 'suitable' is found?> Well, at least it makes any rejection more palatable knowing that it wasn't a legitimate search to begin with.

Got kind rejection letters (yes, two of them for one application). Can't complain, even if the letters were generic, they were very kindly worded (me too, finally; I wonder if they ever filled any of the three open lines or all 'failed' as that silly phrase goes?) Yep, nice kindly worded letter--the same one they used the year before. I mean, why bother writing a new letter to the thousands of rejects applying for a job that included about half the world in its description?

- Fundamentally polite, though faintly brusque and vaguely dismissive rejection letter received February the second - I guess they told all of us who were rejected that the "committee was impressed with our credentials" (2/2) This is normal, no? Should they tell us all that we are terrible candidates? (2/2) - Ha! I do appreciate the letter, though - it's so much better to hear something rather than the empty silence from all the other schools I applied to (2/3) Ummm...isn't a rejection inherently dismissive?
- Received an identical rejection letter a month after the first one. I get it. You really, really don't want me! - I know! I just got another rejection letter today in the mail; They are really rubbing salt in the wound (3/9) I was once rejected FOUR times for the same job; one of the letters asked me "to join them in congratulating their new hire." Um, yeah.

- Has anyone heard anything about this job? Just curious. /// No decision until 3/16 - at the very earliest. Likely a week or 2 later.
- Any word from anyone out there about this one? // No, not a word. It seems that they must have made an offer to someone at this point.... Rejection letter received 4/20 - they are "unable to pursue my candidacy" and they "hope for a rebound in the job market soon." I don't know if this means they've lost the tenure-track line or what. // No word either way yet, as of 4/21, so I assume my letter's in the mail, too. ; // Yes, it was! 4/23 // Tenure-track line wasn't lost, the position was filled, I'm not sure why they worded the letters that way.
I just took it to mean they hoped that we'd all have better luck next year...and that they market rebounds so there might actually be jobs for us all then.

- Application Deadline: Jan. 5th--anyone heard anything from them? I suddenly got their affirmative action questionnaire 3/23, the first sign of life from them, which is odd seeing how it looks like they've scheduled a campus visit for someone else already. And... no sooner did that questionnaire get sent off than the rejection letter came. I have to say, this is the only rejection I've ever gotten that pronounced "you would not be well suited to the particular needs of the Department." Um, so all right, I'm not their favorite candidate, but this makes it sound like I should have known better than to apply in the first place. Did they say this to everyone who shows signs of being serious about their research as well as their teaching? (4/1) They said it to everyone--or all but 3 anyway--the "they" being their administrative temp. Seriously. Yep--and I'll bet I wasn't the only one who got all the letters of rec back from the temp. Does this dept realize how unprofessional and strange it is to have a temp sign and mail hiring-related materials without oversight? A faculty member or permanent staff should be looking over and signing the letters.

- Anthony Grudin and Pepper Stetler? http://www.uvm.edu/artsandsciences/forfaculty/new_faculty/
- Grudin hired after search "failed." Stetler has already moved on.
