DUTIES OF THE POSITION: Teaching responsibilities will include the core lower-division courses in anthropology with additional coursework as assigned. Successful candidate will also assume significant responsibility and a leadership role in the C. E. Smith Museum of Anthropology. Please note that teaching assignments at California State University, East Bay include courses at the Hayward, Concord and Online campuses. In addition to teaching, all faculty have advising responsibilities, assist the department with administrative and/or committee work, and are expected to assume campus-wide committee responsibilities.

RANK AND SALARY: Assistant Professor. Salary is dependent upon educational preparation and experience.  Subject to budgetary authorization.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Candidates are required to have an earned doctorate at time of the effective date of the appointment. Demonstrated record of research and scholarly activity in archaeology of the Americas and archaeological field methods with additional areas of prehistoric ecological resource management/food production required. Experience in the use of information technology and innovative media in public dissemination is required. Training in research methods and experience teaching archaeology field and lab-based courses, including direct teaching of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is preferred. Connections in cultural resource management in applied archaeology, and digital collections management, including knowledge of spatial data (DGPS and total station) acquisition and management, and data architecture/management is preferred. Candidates should demonstrate experience in teaching, mentoring, research, or community service that has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and excellence. George Mason University (VA) - Oct. 15

The George Mason University, Department of Sociology and Anthropology invites applications for a Tenure-Track Archaeology position at the Assistant Professor-level, beginning academic year 2015-2016.

Qualifications: The program seeks to recruit a junior-level archaeologist with interests in the cultural, social and environmental dimensions of the human past; and who balances field research, technical and methodological expertise, and culturally and theoretically significant inquiry. The expectation is that the successful candidate will have evidence of an ongoing field program and funded research, a strong record of research, publication, and teaching excellence. Candidates should be able to offer introductory as well as advanced courses to undergraduate and graduate students in small and large-sized classes, and to teach archaeological methods and theory. The geographic region and specialization are open and should complement existing program strengths. Applicants must have Ph.D. in-hand at time of submission of their application.

Responsibilities: Candidates will have the opportunity to teach in the graduate program. The teaching load for this position is 2:2. The successful candidate will contribute to building the archaeology and physical anthropology offerings at the undergraduate and graduate levels; and foster collaborations with other George Mason University departments and colleges, especially in units that share common interests in the study of the human past. The Mason Anthropology Program offers a B.A. and M.A. degree in Anthropology. It includes courses in all four fields of anthropology with opportunities to collaborate across subdisciplines.

• Does anyone have information regarding the search GM conducted back in 2011-2012? This sounds like a nice job at a cool place.
• The previous search was for a historical archaeologist (African Diaspora?) but it was apparently cancelled/closed and judging from their current faculty list, no-one was hired. Fairfax is a nice city, btw, but the only bummer is that it is very expensive to live there and the traffic is pretty bad (not Boston levels, but still bad). Ordinary run of the mill houses can be half a million bucks or more easily nowadays in the greater Northern Va area. I doubt that an ordinary faculty salary can cope with that well. Of course, given this market, it will slow no-one down from applying (nor should it!) but just an FYI...and like I said, you'd probably like living there anyways.

Northern Illinois University (IL) - Environmental Archaeology - Dec. 1

Northern Illinois University Department of Anthropology anticipates hiring a tenure-track Assistant Professor with expertise in environmental archaeology starting August, 2015. Candidates in all areas of environmental archaeology are encouraged to apply. However, special consideration will be given to those candidates with a regional focus either in Southeast Asia or Latin America.

Candidates will have the opportunity to work with the Institute for the Study of the Environment, Sustainability and Energy and Environmental Studies program. The candidate is expected to be engaged in active field work, to maintain a strong externally funded research program, and to supervise undergraduate and graduate student research in the field. Research interests that complement existing department strengths are particularly welcome. The successful candidate will be responsible for supervising graduate students, and teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses including introductory courses in archaeology, as well as upper level courses in their area of expertise. Teaching responsibilities normally include four courses per academic year. The Anthropology Department is a four field department, with an MA graduate degree program.

The successful candidate must complete the requirements for a PhD in archaeology by August, 2015.

Ohio University (OH) - Archaeobotany of North America - Aug. 31

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Ohio University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Anthropology in the area of Archaeobotany of North America, with specialization in the areas of food, domestication, indigenous societies, and diet in the Ohio region. The successful candidate will teach upper-division courses focusing on archaeobotany, ethnobotany, prehistoric human diet, origins of food production, archaeological and archaeobotanical laboratory methods, and prehistoric human landscape modification. Possible courses include Origins of Food Production; Archaeology of Food; Food, History and Culture; Land Use and Food Production; American Indian Subsistence; and/or Food in the Ancient World; among others. The successful candidate will also teach regular sections of an introductory course in the Anthropology program, and will carry primary responsibility for running the Field School in Ohio Archaeology in the summer. Anthropology faculty teach two courses per semester.

San Diego State University (CA) - Human-Environmental Dynamics - Oct. 15

The Department of Anthropology at San Diego State University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the level of assistant professor in the archaeology of human-environmental dynamics beginning in Fall 2015. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Anthropology or related field, a proven record of excellent publication, potential for securing external research funding, and expertise in environmental archaeology. Specialty interests may include GIS, paleoethnobotany, archaeometry, geoarchaeology, zooarchaeology, or other skills that complement existing departmental strengths. Regional focus is open. Excellent teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels is necessary, including general anthropology courses as well as upper division courses in areas of expertise. Stanford University (CA) - Assistant Professor, Archaeology - Nov. 3

The Department of Anthropology at Stanford University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty appointment in archaeology. The appointment will be made at the Assistant Professor rank. The successful applicant must hold a PhD in archaeology. While the area is open, we expect that the successful candidate would add to the geographical scope and to the methodological and laboratory breadth of the archaeology program. The Anthropology Department has a unique interdisciplinary focus that emphasizes theoretically informed analyses of social and cultural processes and quantitative research. Therefore, a program of fieldwork, as well as broad theoretical and substantive interests, are essential for this position.

University of British Columbia (CAN) - Assistant Professor in the Art and Archaeology of the Roman World - October 8

The Department of Classical, Near Eastern and Religious Studies at the University of British Columbia invites applications for a tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the Art and Archaeology of the Roman World to commence July 1, 2015. The successful candidate will join a flourishing interdisciplinary department with a longstanding graduate program in Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology, with strengths in cross-cultural approaches. S/he will be competent to teach both undergraduate and graduate courses in Roman archaeology and Roman visual culture. Beyond the ability to teach the range of Roman material culture, the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the teaching of other courses in classical archaeology, Roman history, and/or ancient languages.

An active archaeological project that can provide field-work opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students will be considered an asset. The successful candidate must hold a PhD in Roman Archaeology (or expect to have successfully defended prior to July 1, 2015) and must have demonstrated accomplishments in scholarship along with enthusiasm for teaching in a department with the unique combination of fields present in CNERS. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active program of research, graduate and undergraduate teaching, and to participate fully in graduate supervision, departmental service, events, and initiatives. University of Chicago (IL) - Anatolian Archaeology - Sept. 15

Assistant Professor of Anatolian Archaeology at the Oriental Institute and the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations of the University of Chicago.

We are looking for a candidate who can strengthen or complement the Saxo Institutes present archaeological profile chronologically and/or methodologically within the following fields:

Neolithicum and the Bronze Age in Northern Europe

Archaeological excavation, survey and landscape investigation

Applied IT in archaeology

Applicants must be prepared to teach the general archaeological subjects within the BA-programme with special focus on prehistoric archaeology, including the period courses with emphasis on Denmark and Northern Europe.

Further emphasis will be placed on the applicants documented experience with cultural heritage management in Denmark pursuant to the Danish Museum Act, and with archaeological field work, including the application of digital measurement and documentation methods.

The successful applicant is expected to take part in all the various activities within the department and the institute. Furthermore, he or she must be prepared to engage in inter-disciplinary and inter-institutional cooperation.

A tenure-track assistant professorship is a six-year, fixed-term academic position involving research and teaching. The person appointed to the post will be obliged to complete a course in university teaching designed especially for assistant professors, and is expected to be able to take part in all the activities of the Department, including examinations and administration. Approximately six months before the end of the six-year period as assistant professor, a committee set up by the Dean will assess if the assistant professor can be considered for promotion to a tenured position as associate professor.

University of Tulsa (OK) - Prehistoric Archaeologist - Oct. 1

The University of Tulsa’s Department of Anthropology invites applications for a tenure-track position in archaeology at the rank of assistant professor to begin August 2015.  We seek to hire a prehistoric archaeologist who complements the department’s focus on the interplay between the environment, culture, and human biological evolution, past and present.  Regional focus is open. We are particularly interested in the following analytical specialties:  lithics, paleo-ethnobotany, and geoarchaeology. However, other specialties will be considered. Applicants who pursue multidisciplinary, data-intensive research with both applied and theoretical dimensions are of particular interest. Candidates should have completed the Ph.D. at the time of application, have an active field or lab-based research program, and have an excellent teaching record.  Applicants with evidence of obtaining external funding and a strong publication record and who can articulate how they involve undergraduates in their research will have an advantage. The University of Tulsa is a selective private school with an emphasis on small class size and strong research and scholarship.  The Department of Anthropology offers BA, MA, and Ph.D. degrees.
