Opportunity: Kent State University seeks to fill a full-time tenured faculty position in Arabic Translation Studies at the rank of professor, to begin August 2015. The successful candidate will develop and support translation degree programs at the Masters and Doctoral levels within the internationally recognized translation program (Institute for Applied Linguistics, http://appling.kent.edu) affiliated with the department of Modern and Classical Language Studies. Command of English and Arabic is required, and proficiency in any other language is desirable. An established record of research in Arabic translation studies is essential. Experience teaching Arabic translation in North America is required; experience in teaching research and writing at the graduate level is highly desirable. The successful candidate will have an international reputation, as well as a successful track record in the development of undergraduate and graduate Arabic translation programs and curricula. The successful candidate will be expected to teach graduate courses in translation studies, such as graduate research and writing in translation studies; Arabic scientific, technical, and medical translation; Arabic commercial, legal and diplomatic translation; and translation into Arabic. The successful candidate will also be expected to maintain an active research program including the mentoring of Masters and Doctoral students.

Carnegie Mellon University (PA) - Tenure Track Position in Second Language Acquisition and Technology-Enhanced Learning

The Department of Modern Languages invites applications for an open-rank position beginning in August 2016. Of particular interest are senior level candidates whose research focuses on technology-enhanced learning, with experience in one or more of the following areas: learning sciences, digital humanities, language assessment, language policy and planning. Successful candidates must have an earned Ph.D., strong evidence of research productivity, excellence in teaching, and evidence of securing extramural funding. They should have strong administrative abilities to coordinate and advance the development of the Department’s technology-enhanced, hybrid, online learning programs and the desire to collaborate in an interdisciplinary environment with colleagues working in the areas of language acquisition, learning sciences, and global studies. Also required is interest in teaching courses both in the graduate programs in SLA and in one of the language and cultural studies areas of the Department.

Candidates should have advanced level proficiency and ability to teach upper division as well as lower division courses in one or more of the following language areas: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian, Spanish, with preference for expertise in French. Columbia University (NY) - TT Assistant Professor, Modern Arabic Literature

The Department of Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African Studies at Columbia University seeks to fill a position in Modern Arabic Literature at the rank of assistant professor. The successful candidate will have broad intellectual interests, a commitment to both undergraduate and graduate education, and a willingness to contribute to new departmental initiatives. Harvard University (MA) - Assistant Professor in Classical Arabic Language and Literature

We seek to appoint an assistant professor in Classical Arabic Language and Literature. The appointment is expected to begin on or after July 1, 2016. Candidates are encouraged to apply by September 15, 2015. The appointee will teach and advise at the undergraduate and graduate levels. This is a tenure track position.

Doctorate or equivalent terminal degree in classical Arabic studies or related discipline, required by the time the appointment begins; mastery of classical Arabic required. The successful candidate will have research expertise in some particular aspect or aspects of classical Arabic language and literature in any period before 1500. The appointee will have a mastery of classical Arabic grammar, an ability to teach classical Arabic belles-lettres (including poetry), and an intimate knowledge of broader historical and cultural contexts. Ability to teach modern Arabic literature, although not required, is desirable. It is expected that the successful candidate will participate actively in both the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations and another appropriate program or department (e.g. Medieval Studies, Comparative Literature, History, Study of Religion, or Linguistics).

New York University Abu Dhabi (UAE) - Research Fellowships in the Humanities

The NYUAD Institute has embarked on a multi-year research fellowship program in the Humanities. This program aims to help create an energetic, multi-faceted research environment for the Humanities at NYUAD's campus. To this end, NYUAD is annually inviting applications from distinguished senior scholars as well as from promising junior scholars for residential fellowships at NYUAD’s Institute. Fellows are contributing to NYUAD's intellectual community through research and research-related activities, including sharing their work-in-progress with NYUAD faculty and students and participating in scholarly networks engaged in ongoing research centered at the NYUAD Institute.

While open to scholars working in all areas of the Humanities, the program aims in particular to build a center of outstanding research capacity in areas of the Humanities that are relevant for the study of the Arabic world, its rich intellectual, religious, and scientific history, its cultural and artistic heritage as expressed in traditional and new media, and its interaction with other cultures in the past and present. Scholars of Arabic culture and history will find it enriching to work alongside fellows who conduct research in related and adjacent fields. Scholarship furthered by this program is closely connected to the research profile of NYUAD's faculty in the Arts & Humanities; its Liberal Arts curriculum, with concentrations on History, Literature, Philosophy, the Arab Crossroads program, and Museum Studies; related departments and research centers at NYU New York; and NYUAD's outreach program in the UAE.

Awards & Facilities

The Institute hosts up to two senior fellows and up to four junior fellows.

For the period of their fellowships, scholars are offered work/office space at the Institute, full use of NYUAD's library facilities (which are substantial, closely connected as they are to NYU's Main Library in New York), administrative support, housing at NYUAD's campus on Saadiyat Island, a fellowship stipend commensurate with experience, a personal research allowance, support for travel to and from Abu Dhabi. Fellowship recipients are responsible for conforming to tax requirements of their home countries.

Candidate Qualifications

Eligible candidates for the senior fellowships have an outstanding scholarly accomplishment, including an internationally recognized publication record. Mid-career scholars with strong publication records and exceptional scholarly promise may be considered in this category. Eligible candidates for the junior fellowships, which are intended especially for young scholars who wish to turn their doctoral dissertations into book manuscripts publishable with major academic presses, have received their Ph.D. within the previous five years and have a strong record of scholarly accomplishment.

All research fellowships will be offered to scholars who demonstrate interest in playing an active role in the intellectual community of NYUAD, in particular by exchanging ideas with other Institute fellows and with NYU faculty and students. The fellowships are open to scholars of all backgrounds and nationalities.

Duke University (NC) - Arabic Language Lecturer

The Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at Duke University invites applications for a full-time position as an Arabic language lecturer, beginning Fall 2016. The initial contract for the position is three years and renewable every five years based on a demonstration of quality and rigor of teaching, curricular innovation, professional development and service to the field. The successful candidate will join the growing Arabic program at Duke. The primary responsibilities consist of teaching and developing intermediate and advanced courses, creating teaching materials, designing assessment tools, and organizing and participating in extra-curricular activities related to service learning and refugee issues. The teaching load is maximum 5 courses per year or 12 contact hours per week, and the starting salary is negotiable based on experience and qualifications. Candidates should have an M.A. or higher degree in Arabic language and literature, applied linguistics, or a related field, and must have fluency in both Arabic and English. Experience in teaching Arabic at the university level in North America is required, and the demonstrated ability to develop and implement service learning and outreach programs is preferred. Knowledge and experience with study abroad programs and instructional technologies, and desire to further pedagogical/professional development are desirable.
