The University of Michigan - Arabic Language/Academic Flagship Director (Tenure-Track Position)

University of Michigan, the Department of Near Eastern Studies, is seeking to fill a position in Arabic studies at the rank of tenure-track Assistant or tenured Associate Professor beginning September 2013. This is a university-year (nine-month) appointment. Candidates must have a PhD, and those whose scholarship and teaching focus on one or more of the areas of Arabic language, literature, sociolinguistics, and culture, are particularly encouraged to apply. Princeton University - Associate/Full Professor of Classical Arabic Literature

Position Summary: Princeton University's Near Eastern Studies Department invites applications for a tenured position (associate or full professorship) in Classical Arabic Literature. Research expertise may be in any period of Arabic literature before 1800, and may focus on any region where there was significant production of creative literature in poetry or prose. The successful candidate will, however, be expected to introduce undergraduates to the classics of Arabic literature of the late pre-Islamic and early Islamic centuries in translation, and to provide training for graduates reading texts of this period in the original Arabic. The Department has some preference for an appointee who can also teach in a distinct but related field, as for example medieval Persian literature or modern Arabic literature.

Dartmouth College - Asst. Professor, Arabic Language and Lit.

The Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Languages and Literatures invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor rank in Arabic Language, Literature, and Culture. Appointment will become effective July 1, 2013, with teaching duties beginning in September 2013. Applicants for this position must have native or near native proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic and English as well as a Ph.D. in hand by the time of appointment. The teaching load is four courses per year, to be taught over three of the four quarters.

The field of specialization is open and we welcome applications from a range of disciplines related to Arabic studies. Candidates must be able to teach Arabic language at all levels and Arabic literature and culture courses in English, as well as to contribute to the development of the Arabic program at Dartmouth. The appointee will also be expected to direct Dartmouths Arabic Foreign Study Program, currently in Tangier, for one quarter every two or three years.

Assistant Professor of French & Arabic: Loyola University Maryland is currently accepting applications for a tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor of French & Arabic. This full-time entry-level position will provide tenure-track coverage in the area of Francophone North African literatures. University of Washington, Seattle - Islamic Studies & Classical Arabic

Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilization at the University of Washington, Seattle, WA, invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track appointment in Islamic Studies at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin in September 2013.

The School of Modern Languages is seeking to appoint to a fixed term 5 Year Lectureship in Arabic from 1 January 2013, or as soon as possible thereafter. University of Nebraska-Lincoln - Arabic Language (Professor of Practice)

Position Description. Foreign Language Lecturers report to the Department Chair. The position of
Lecturer requires teaching and service responsibilities as well as a Master’s degree; scholarly activities
are welcomed but not required, although Lecturers are expected to remain current with the pedagogical
innovations in their field. Lecturers will normally teach twelve credit hours per semester and hold regular
office hours; and they will participate actively in departmental, college, and university service.
Attendance at departmental, sectional, and course-related meetings is mandatory. Collegiality is essential.
The position is a 9-month, non-tenure-track appointment, and the salary is competitive and commensurate
with qualifications and experience.

Required Qualifications:

• Earned master’s in Arabic or closely related field by August 1, 2013
• Native or near-native proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic, in one dialect, and in English
• A minimum of four months residence immersed in an Arabic-speaking environment outside the USA
• Six semesters of at least part-time experience teaching one or more sections of Arabic at the college
level in a US institution
• Willingness to work collegially in a multi-language department
• Authorization to work permanently in the United States

Preferred Qualifications:

• Native or near-native proficiency in a language other than Arabic or English and a willingness to
teach introductory courses in that language

University of Florida - Arabic Language (Lecturer)

University of Florida, the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, invitesapplicants for a full-time lecturer position in Arabic Language, to begin January 2013. Teaching load will be determined by departmental needs, but is expected to be three courses per semester. Applicants should have native or near-native fluency in Standard Arabic, an Arabic dialect, and English, and instructional training and experience in teaching Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced language courses. Minimum requirement is an M.A. Specialization in Arabic Studies (Literature or Linguistics) or a related field is preferred. Salary is competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience and includes a full benefits package.

University of Notre Dame - Arabic Language (Lecturer)

The Program in Arabic Language and Culture in the Department of Classics at Notre Dame invites applications for a full-time lecturer in Arabic language to begin August 2013. The position has a one-year renewable contract. Successful applicants will have at least an M.A. in linguistics, literature, Middle Eastern Studies, or relevant field, as well as preparation in communicative language pedagogy. Successful applicants will also have native or near native fluency in Modern Standard Arabic, at least one dialect, and English, and some experience teaching Arabic at beginning and intermediate levels.

UC Davis: MIDDLE EAST/SOUTH ASIA STUDIES STUDENT AFFAIRS OFFICER

Job Summary:

Under direction of the ME/SA Faculty Program Director and Associate Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, provide academic advising and related support services for Middle East/South Asia Studies (under the Social Sciences Red Cluster administration) and the Division of Student Affairs.
Responsible for development, planning, implementing and managing major programs, initiatives and support services. Serve as a senior staff member in overseeing advising, retention and outreach activities. Maintain information about a wide variety of campus and community resources to assist students in the areas of retention, leadership development and professional development.
Participate on departmental and campus-wide committees as requested. Collaborate with campus leaders and functions with a high degree of autonomy. Develop and manage budgetary projections for departmental and campus wide programs. Hire, train and supervise peer advisers.

Minimum Qualifications:

-Knowledge and experience applying counseling and guidance techniques to provide academic advising and related services to undergraduate students at the University/College level including knowledge of State and Federal laws concerning confidentiality of student records.
-Knowledge of academic and administrative organizational structure within a complex higher education university or college structure including related programs, and general curricular elements and structures (e.g., courses, unit prerequisites, majors and minors). Knowledge and skills to examine and assess college transcripts and compute grade point averages and grade point balances.
-Knowledge of multi-cultural dynamics within a University setting, and the academic environment and pressures encountered by students at a major research university, and of the personal and social problems commonly encountered by college students of all backgrounds.
-Analytical, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills to analyze situations, initiate solutions and develop guidelines with coordinating groups and programs, and involving students and student interactions.
-Interpersonal and communication skills to effectively interact with students, parents, faculty, administrators, alumni and community groups.
-Writing, editing and proofreading skills to compose correspondence and prepare clear and concise summaries.
-Organizational and presentation skills to provide direction in program planning and implementation; and to make presentations in group and public forums.
-Computer skills using a personal PC for word processing, spreadsheets, data processing, and presentation activities.

Preferred Qualifications:

-Experience developing, organizing and implementing educational programs, workshops or seminars to enhance student development and retention within the Middle Eastern, South Asian, Arab, and Muslim student community.

-B.A. degree in Middle East/South Asia Studies, Higher Education Administration, Counseling and Guidance or related fields.

-Experience working with Middle Eastern, South Asian, Arab, and Muslim students, parents, alumni, community groups, and organizations.
