Allegheny College - Assistant Professor of Arabic

Allegheny College seeks applications for a tenure-track position in Arabic at the assistant professor level to begin August 2013. American University of Beirut - 2 Jobs - Modern Literature, Islam Thought Literary Dimensions

The Department of Arabic and Near Eastern Languages at the American University of Beirut seeks applicants in the fields of Modern Arabic Literature and Literary Theory (with special emphasis on prose genres), and Classical Islamic thought in its literary dimensions to begin September 1, 2013.

For the position in Modern Arabic Literature and Literary Theory, applicants should be well versed in both Arab and Western classical heritages, including Western literary theory.

For the position in Classical Islamic thought in its literary dimensions, candidates should be able to design and teach advanced courses in one or more the following areas: Islamic theology and its Greco-Arabic background, Qur’anic and Sufi studies, as well as more basic courses in other fields of classical Islamic thought such as heresiography and classical literary theory.

The language of instruction in this department (and only in this department) is Modern Standard Arabic, but mastery of English is an essential requirement. A reading knowledge of French and/or German is highly desirable. Applicants must be able to teach, in Arabic, service courses in Arabic grammar and modern Arabic thought to native speakers of Arabic. Solid knowledge of the Arabic language and heritage and training in modern Western methodologies are essential.

Applicants must have a PhD upon appointment. Rank will normally be at the Assistant Professor level; usual contracts are initially for four years. The department offers BA and MA degrees, and a PhD in Arabic Language and Literature. The Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Languages and Literatures invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor rank in Arabic Language, Literature, and Culture. The UM Arabic Program offers an innovative and intensive language and culture curriculum in a semi-immersion environment in which classroom instruction is supplemented by events, clubs, speakers, language partnering, and education abroad. The Assistant Program Director will be working in close collaboration with the Program Director, Associate Director, Specialist in Student Affairs, and Coordinator as well as all faculty to ensure the smooth management of the program and uphold its rigorous standards. Job Summary:

Under direction of the ME/SA Faculty Program Director and Associate Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, provide academic advising and related support services for Middle East/South Asia Studies (under the Social Sciences Red Cluster administration) and the Division of Student Affairs.
Responsible for development, planning, implementing and managing major programs, initiatives and support services. Serve as a senior staff member in overseeing advising, retention and outreach activities. Maintain information about a wide variety of campus and community resources to assist students in the areas of retention, leadership development and professional development.
Participate on departmental and campus-wide committees as requested. Collaborate with campus leaders and functions with a high degree of autonomy. Develop and manage budgetary projections for departmental and campus wide programs. Hire, train and supervise peer advisers.

Minimum Qualifications:
