  • Archaeologists are eligible to apply for this job even though the ad does not explicitly state that they are eligible. When cluster hires are made at NC State, successful applicants are typically housed in the most appropriate department (in this case it would be history or anthropology, most likely). There are several other jobs advertised for this cluster in art and design, computer science, and engineering -- but the history position is the one most appropriate for archaeologists.

University of Arkansas, Fayetteville (AR) - TT Assistant Professor in Anthropology - Archaeology - Deadline: Nov. 29, 2015 - CAMPUS INTERVIEW STAGE[]

The Department of Anthropology at the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville solicits applications for a full-time, tenure-track assistant professor of archaeology to begin August 2016.  The teaching load will be competitive, but the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to growing our introductory service course.  Supervision of graduate students in the Department of Anthropology’s MA and PhD programs is expected, as well as interdisciplinary teaching and research with allied units including the Center for Advanced Spatial Technologies (CAST), the Department of Geosciences, and the PhD program in Environmental Dynamics (ENDY).

The successful candidate is expected to have a demonstrated background in research and teaching, and to have been awarded a Ph.D. in Anthropology by the time of appointment.  We are particularly interested in candidates with research interests and expertise in spatial analysis of settlement systems; ground, air, or space-based remote sensing; 3D modeling and visualization; or archaeological GIS.  Geographic specialization is open.

Additional materials may be requested at a later date.

  • For full consideration, applications should be received prior to November 30, 2015.
  • "The teaching load will be competitive" -- what does that mean?
  • I think R1 - as in a 2:2. More research emphasis than teaching.
  • Most of the Bio Anth and Archaeo faculty do a 2:1, as long as they have a decent research program.  If not, they might end up with a 2:2, but 2:1 is pretty much the norm in the Dept these days.
  • Letters of recommendation requested (12/21) (X2)
  • Also had letters requested but only just found out. Were applicants notified directly or just the referees?
  • Initially found out from one of my references, but got a reminder email today as one of them hadn't yet submitted anything.
  • The advertisement has been reposted due to a clerical error (it is open to PHDs in Anthropology, Archaeology, and related archaeological fields). This is the only change made, and the new closing date is January 1. All applicants that have already submitted are still under consideration so no followup is necessary.  New applicants will be considered following the same criteria as before with the addition of PhD in these related disciplines.
  • Skype interviews for 10 of the 121 applicants.
  • On campus interivews scheduled.
  • Any word on this?
  • Campus interviews completed.

  • (10/23)  References Contacted
  • Any word on this job? seems to have gone cold, has been over a month and no action...?
  • I'd suspect that it's a timing thing. References contacted toward end of October and given a couple weeks to send their stuff. Once everything arrives, T-Day holiday. Then you have to imagine you have the end of the semester rush and then another holiday. I'd suspect the committee has had little time to meet and deliberate on the next step.
  • Invited for campus interview
  • Good luck! 6 years of trying with pubs, grants, etc., and now I'm officially out of the game. Movin' on to greener pastures. If only 40 year old me could go back to 23 year old me and have a reality check. Good luck to the candidates.
  • Pretty sure this should be moved to offer made and accepted, from what I've heard

Applicants are sought who will contribute to our undergraduate and graduate programs. The graduate MA program includes tracks in archaeology, cultural anthropology, and museum and heritage studies (which includes material, visual and expressive culture) . In particular we seek candidates with experience using technology to engage communities; for example, through digital curation/repatriation, real-time archaeology, and open source mapping. Course load is five courses per year taught over three academic quarters. PhD must be in hand at the time of application.

  • Candidates must complete an on-line application at https://dujobs.silkroad.com. This will include a letter of interest, curriculum vita, a teaching statement detailing teaching philosophy and brief description of courses they are prepared to teach, a research statement, and a list of five references.
    • Wow. Sounds excessive for a first round, no? Why not just CVs, letters, and a list of three refs for stage 1. Then they can cut based on CVs and then intro letters. Then they can request refs. Then from the folks that pass that, they can ask for a more specific teaching statement, sample syllabai, etc.
  • Deadline: not stated as of 07/24/15.
  • On their website it states "Candidates should apply by the end of October to be considered for an interview at the AAA meeting in Denver. Full consideration will be given to anyone who applies until the position is filled."
  • STATUS UPDATE: Job will not be posted on University of Denver Website, https://dujobs.silkroad.com, until 7/31/2015.
  • Also posted at Cultural Anthropology 2015-2016
  • Anyone know how you're supposed to apply for this one? All the job postings have vanished... did the position get scrapped? It isn't located online anywhere that I can find, and it was removed from AAA's career center.
  • It's still on the UDenvery silkroad job database. Search for "anthropology" and it will pop us. I believe you pay for a AAA posting, which has an expiration date.
  • cc
  • What's "cc" supposed to mean?
  • Interviews at AAA scheduled
  • STATUS UPDATE: The job is no longer fully listed through the DU website, perhaps it is cancelled.
  • (A very nice) rejection email stating that four finalists were invited for on-campus interviews (01/28)

We seek someone who can contribute to our focus on human adaptation, ecology and evolution. Regional and methodological focus is open (excluding the Southwestern United States). The successful candidate is expected to have an externally-funded and active research agenda leading to publication in leading peer-reviewed journals and student research opportunities, and to be committed to excellence in teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels.

Applications must be submitted online through the University of Missouri website http://hrs.missouri.edu/find-a-job/academic/index.php.

  • Screening will begin November 15th and continue until a suitable candidate is hired.
  • that is a steep demand for application materials!! I guess this is the new normal?
  • Seems for some. I mind this less (as we all likely have prepared a research statement and evidence of teaching) than when they require LOR up front (and therefore having my committee slog through another round of recs without even knowing if you are in the Top 15 or One of 100). Some much paper, though, especially as the First Round gets just a couple minutes apiece. Why waste additional time, when we all coupld be using our extra energy publishing?
  • agreed on the steep demand for materials up front...I guess they think their new NAS hire makes their department extra special...I would not waste any time applying unless you are really strong on the neo-Darwinian paradigm.
  • Horrible online application system!
  • This is looking like a rougher and rougher department and university to join. Given some of the controversial faculty with old and recent issues and the strikes and various protests happening now, does anyone have experience here?

Nothing on this yet?

  • Request for letters of recommendation on December 4th (x3)
  • Was this request sent to the applicant or directly to the references?
  • To the applicant
  • Request email noted that there were over 100 applicants for the job.
  • Any further news on this?

Other than letters or reference request in December, has anyone heard anything further?? (01/27)

  • I heard from someone who got one that campus interviews were already scheduled.
  • Word is that this search was cancelled due to budget cuts. Anyone else hear this?

Position 2: Post-doc in Program Assessment, FPAN Headquarters (Pensacola) (Deadline - 2/15/16)

FPAN’s stated goal is to stem the deterioration of the state’s buried past. Toward this end, FPAN staff develop and deliver a variety of programs intended to engage and educate audiences about Florida’s archaeological past in the belief that an informed populace will make preservation-minded decisions about the protection and study of archaeological resources. But are our programs having the desired effect? We expect the incumbent in this position to 1) analyze FPAN’s existing education, outreach, and engagement programs to identify appropriate assessment methods, 2) conduct a study of program effectiveness, and 3) evaluate audiences reached (or not reached) to identify socio-cultural, economic, and regional underserved groups. The long-term goal is to create strategies to gather data that can be used to develop, change, or even phase out programs to better meet FPAN’s goal of archaeological resource preservation in Florida.

Position 3: Post-doc in Heritage Tourism, FPAN Headquarters (Pensacola) (Deadline - 2/15/16)

The 25 counties of FPAN’s Northwest and North Central Regions contain some museums and heritage tourism attractions, but huge gaps exist in the programs offered to engage and educate citizens and visitors. The attractions in place possess a range of resources in terms of heritage, funding, and interpretive expertise, and enjoy little cooperation in order to leverage visitation. We expect the incumbent in this position to 1) inventory and analyze the existing heritage tourism infrastructure and gauge its current economic impact, and 2) develop a strategic plan for assessing interpretive approaches and for creating and/or enhancing heritage tourism attractions. The long-term goal is to improve Northwest and North Central Florida’s heritage tourism infrastructure to better deliver a cultural heritage preservation message while promoting economic development through heritage tourism.

  • Received a request for an interview at the AAAs (9 November)
  • Didn't apply, but sad to see programs are still doing AAA interviews. You know, because flights to national conferences are free for the unemployed.
  • CSUSB phone/skype interviews will be scheduled soon for candidates unable to attend AAA
  • This is ridiculous. How can you have prelim interviews but a review date listed as Dec 1. This sounds like a problematic position.....
  • A lot of places are doing this now. It is an opportunity to have a face to face and really get a better understanding of the people you may be working with. I prefer it over talking on the phone. I am not a fit for this, so not applying, but I know the person perviously in this position was incredibly successful, and the department faculty are great.
  • Request for Skype Interview (12/4)
  • I'm confused.  Are the Skype interviews a "substitute" for AAA interviews, or a necessary step regardless of whether someone had a AAA interview?
  • The skype interview is a substitute for the AAA interviews. One or the other. Not both.
  • Anyone know if Skype Interview requests are still going out? It seems they were going out sporadically, rather than all at once.
  • -Request for campus interview (1/23)

Completion of Ph.D. is expected prior to or shortly after the date of hire. We seek an archaeologist of the Americas (excluding the Northeast), broadly trained in anthropology, with an excellent teaching record, an active research agenda, and a strong commitment to including students in archaeological fieldwork. The ideal candidate would possess research and teaching interests that address one or more key global issues surrounding indigenous archaeology, such as: antiquities trafficking, repatriation of cultural patrimony, international law and world heritage protection, collaborative archaeology, tourism, or construction of memory.

In addition, the successful candidate will teach Introduction to Archaeology, upper-level electives in the candidate’s areas of specialization, contribute to the capstone seminar in Anthropology, and will also be expected to participate in all-university programs, including the Liberal Arts Core Curriculum (http://www.colgate.edu/academics/core-curriculum).

All applications should include: a cover letter specifying the applicant's interest in the position and how that interest intersects with the applicant's teaching and research experiences, a C.V., one article-length writing sample, and three letters of recommendation (ideally, at least one letter will address the candidate’s teaching qualifications). Sample syllabi and other evidence of strong teaching experience are welcome. Colgate strives to be a community supportive of diverse perspectives and identities. Candidates should describe in their cover letter their approach to teaching and/or scholarship in a diverse and inclusive educational environment. Colgate University is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer; women and candidates from historically underrepresented groups are especially encouraged to apply. Kenyon College (OH) - TT Asst. Professor (Archaeologist) - Deadline: 1 Nov. 2015 - POSITION FILLED[]

Kenyon College, a highly selective, nationally ranked liberal arts college in central Ohio, invites applications for a tenure-track position in Anthropology at the level of Assistant Professor, beginning fall semester 2016. Completion of Ph.D. is expected prior to or shortly after the date of hire. We seek an archaeologist specializing in Latin America, broadly trained in anthropology, with an excellent teaching record, an active research agenda, and a strong commitment to including students in ongoing research. A strong willingness to work collaboratively with colleagues in International Studies, Latino/a Studies, History, and Modern Languages and Literatures is also preferred. Theoretical specialties should complement existing strengths within the Anthropology department.

To apply, candidates should visit the online application site found at https://employment.kenyon.edu. Responsibilities include teaching a 3/2 course load over two semesters. The successful candidate will teach at least one section of Introduction to Archaeology each year, upper-level courses in Archaeology, and classes dealing with the modern cultures and histories associated with Latin America. In addition, the successful candidate will contribute to the senior exercise in Anthropology and will be expected to engage with the College's liberal arts curriculum and with colleagues and students in interdisciplinary programs.

  • Review of applications will begin November 1, 2015, and continue until the position is filled.
  • Surprise! They want the teaching philosophy as a separate document, not integrated into the cover letter, as their description implies.
  • Why the deletion of the query about a potential inside candidate? Are we pretending such things don't happen? Or that it's inappropriate to want information about the possibility? Edited to add: It wasn't my query, but its removal puzzles me.
  • I didn't delete it, but I can't figure out how to undo its deletion. But, in reading it, it basically said "Looks like there's an inside candidate. Any knowledge?" Pretty general. That said, I think it is a negative comment. It doesn't do anything than open the door for anxiety-fueled venting. What purpose does it really serve, other than giving folks some kind of emotional crutch for a possible eventual rejection? There are probably so many jobs with inside candidates or particular targets. But non-inside folks always have a chance. That said, it is interesting to learn about these kinds of politics.
  • I also didn't delete it, and I don't fit the criteria for this position (and am, thus, not applying), but I saw the notes above in recent edits and wanted to contribute to this conversation: I've commented in previous years when I thought or knew of an inside candidate. Yes, there could always be an inside candidate and yes, saying that there is - or may be - may increase anxiety. But 1) I would certainly prefer to know if someone else knows or suspects that and 2) I would still apply if that were the case but would be more careful about time spent trying to land a specific job (including agreeing to long and stressful campus interviews if I suspect I'm not actually in the running for the position).
  • Agreed. I think it's valuable information and I don't see any harm in sharing what we know. The job search is awful. For everyone. Inside candidates and outside one.  I certainly lean towards having more information rather than less. That said, I have exactly no information about this particular search.
  • I guess I agree that it is good to know, but I definitely disagree that that kind of info really is productive. If you feel you are qualified, invest. If you get a campus interview but don't go because you suspect that there's an inside candidate that is not a good idea at all. In fact, I'd really, really, really try to talk you out of it if I knew you. If there is an inside candidate, there is nothing you can do about it other than try your hardest. Plus, I've seen inside candidates not get jobs. I admit I like knowing that kind of stuff. I like gossip. But it doesn't do anything.I don't think it really increases anxiety as much as it offers a pre-fashioned way to buffer one against rejection. Plus, it distracts from focusing on what you need to do to get a job: focus on yourself not on possible fears and anxieties surrounding some mysterious other person; there are already enough of them
  • In the case of this particular job, I'd say it's productive to know if a search has a predetermined outcome (as some do... though certainly not all jobs with "inside candidates"). That information is pertinent for many people -- and is not "gossip" -- because this institution is requesting letters up front. Three letters is a significant amount of lost human capital if a search isn't a bona fide one and I don't take requesting these letters lightly. If a position is already presumed to be going to a particular person, that would help me decide whether to bother my letter writers or not.
  • I don't take information about inside candidates as disincentive to apply. Just as useful context when writing my cover letter. Sometimes knowing about the inside candidate can tell you a lot about what they're looking for, and the inside doesn't always get the job.
  • I have to say I disagree and I agree with this exchange. I'll explain both sides of this. On the one hand, of course it's gossip. And as gossip it has that negativeness that the academic job hunt has. And negative energy is poison, especially with this. Not trying to fully apply for a job because of early letters of rec and a possible inside candidate is foolish. It's a pain in the butt, and schools requesting letters so early should be publicly shamed. But assuming that means there is an inside candidate is not necessarily the case. It could be, but who knows. Even if it is, not trying is a bad idea. Here's another reason why, inside candidates often do not get the job. I'm a case in point. I am in my second tenure track position (I come here to just read about the job market and what folks are saying, but I am not on the market now [maybe if a job comes up that does make sense for me, I'll pursue it, but that is unlikely]). Nevertheless, both jobs I received, there was an inside candidate. Both. I had no idea when I applied or when I interviewed, and I am glad for that. It would have been extra stress and may have had contributed to a self-defeating attitude. But there was an inside candidate for both jobs. For one, there was a visiting professor and for the other there was a former post-doc. I don't know how I got the jobs, but I like to think it is because I did a good job at the interview and the job talk. But who knows? Maybe the inside people were so confident that they needlessly shot themselves in the feet? Maybe the inside candidates were not everyone's inside candidate and politics led to me getting hired? Maybe it was luck? Maybe I am still not the person either university really wanted/wants and I should go somewhere else or do something esle? Either way, both times there were inside candidates. Both times knowledge of that did not help me and could have hurt me. Both times I got the job. Ok. That's my take on why I think its gossip, negative, and unhelpful. Now, here's my other take. This, unlike the other side, is based less on experience, but sort of now that I've seen what can happen in academic departments. Having an inside candidate is shitty. It's crappy. It should be viewed as unethical. There is no way, absolutely no way, none whatsoever, that any inside candidate is beyond compare in job qualifications. Not in this job "market." There are people with big grants, many articles, awards, books, tons of teaching experience, etc., looking for jobs. There is no way that any inside candidate can be guaranteed to be the best. Just no way. So, if a department has a committment to an inside candidate before a search, it tells you a lot about the department. That it's political. That it's whatever. It also can tell you what you might expect if you get an interview or, like me, the actual job. Things might be turbulent or rocky or not every faculty member welcoming. I don't know. But it is gossip. It is negative. But it can be useful information. But it should absolutely in no way prevent you from applying for the job and trying to get the job.
  • Is anybody else having problems with the online recommendation system at Kenyon? My references aren't getting the automated email with the link to upload. If anybody has a solution, please advise. (x3)
  • I am also having trouble with their online system.
  • I'm having an idential problem with James Madison, posting here hoping one solution works for both.
  • I think that the request for letters from your recommeders will not be sent until you upload all of your application materials and hit the submit button. This is likely also the issue for the James Madison system.
  • Thanks for the response, though I had already submitted my materials and the e-mails still never came through. Hearing back from the department about this, they asked me to have my writers send their letters to the depatment admin. staff and they will upload to the system.
  • Request for AAA interview (11/12)
  • Any news on campus interviews? (12/11)
  • They just finished up Skype interviews this week, so it might be a while before they schedule campus interviews.
  • Any news in the new year? Has anyone been invited to campus? (19 Jan.)
  • Campus interview request (1/22)
  • Rejection email 4/4 that the position has been filled (4/27)

The department is looking for scholars with exceptional records in teaching and research in anthropological archaeology, specializing in landscape and environmental archaeology, archaeobotany, and/or geoarchaeology. Regional and chronological expertise is open, but applicants specializing in the Old World are preferred. All candidates are expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses. • Closing Date: All posts close at 11:59 PM Eastern Standard Time on the date listed: 11-16-2015.
  • Anyone know what the story is here? This appears to be exactly the same search as last year --- the one that got over 400 applicants, took forever, and was accepted by someone at the end of March. Did the funding fall through?
  • I wonder if there is already a candidate in mind since they went through the same search last year.
  • They made offers to two candidates last year, but both turned them down and stayed at their home institutions
  • This is not true at all. I am not sure if they made two offers or not. But they definitely made one offer, and the individual most definitely accepted. The individual was on a post-doc, and negotiated a start at the end of the post-doc. This job does indeed sound similar to last year's, but with one key exception: "applicants specializing in the Old World are preferred." The candidate who accepted the job last year was a New World archaeologist.
  • You are right... I stand corrected. It only appears to be the same search. As you suggest, last year's was geographically open while this one is Old World preferred. And I am very glad to learn that we received a false report (though not so glad to be reminded just how reliable wiki information really is). It does help to restore just a little faith in the process.
  • There were two possible hire spots. Offers were in fact made to three individuals for the hire: the one candidate accepted, the two others stayed at their home institutions.
  • Has someone else noticed that the link to the application is not working in the NYU website?
  • Last year they asked for reference letters from the beginning, not this year?
  • Apparently not this time. They probably ask for letters once they got a pool of short-listed candidates.
  • Request for letters of recommendation in e-mail to applicant (12/13) (x2)
  • Short list contacted (1/13)
  • Rejection email received (14/3) (x1)
  • Heard this was offered and accepted

  • This is an interesting search. Two archaeologists are retiring. They started as Mayanists, and continue to be Mayanists, but also started working in Ohio since they were the only archaeologists there and could do field schools. They just hired an archaeobotanist who works in the same area. I wonder if they are trying to eliminate the Meso-aspect and build up the N. American, or if they hire last year already moved on to another program. ANy info?
  • Any news on this one? Some other jobs with similar deadlines are already down to shortlists...
  • On campus interview already conducted.
  • Selection expected by now. No news.
  • Rejection letter 12/1/2015 (x2)
  • At least it was a very nice real paper rejection letter sent in a timely manner.

Pennsylvania State University (PA) - Professor of Archaeology (Tenure Track, Open Rank) - Deadline: 15 Oct. 2015 - OFFER ACCEPTED[]

The Department of Anthropology (http://www.anthro.psu.edu) at The Pennsylvania State University invites applications for a tenure track position in archaeology starting in August 2016. Rank is open.

We seek an outstanding archaeologist whose interests and skills are consistent with the Anthropology Department`s integrative, scientific, and quantitative approach to research, and its long tradition of sociopolitical, population, ecological, and evolutionary research. Candidates’ areas of interest might include (but are not limited to): the development of sociopolitical complexity, food production, economic interaction, population structure and change, anthropogenic environments, and complex adaptive systems. Candidates must be engaged in active field and laboratory research that complements existing strengths in our program.

Methodological expertise is open. The successful candidate must demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, an ability to obtain external funding, and a strong publication record.

We encourage collaborative research projects within the department and affiliation, when possible, with a diverse array of inter-disciplinary life-science, environmental, and population-related research centers and programs on campus (e.g., Population Research Institute http://www.pop.psu.edu, Penn State Institutes of Energy and the Environment http://www.psiee.psu.edu; Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences http://www.huck.psu.edu/content/research, and Human Dimensions of Natural Resources and the Environment http://agsci.psu.edu/hdnre.

  • Review of applications will begin October 15, 2015, and will continue until the position is filled. Direct questions regarding this faculty position to Dr. Kenneth Hirth (kgh2@psu.edu). Applications should include: 1) a curriculum vitae with educational background, employment history, and list of publications; 2) a statement concerning research and teaching interests; and 3) the names, addresses, and emails of at least three references. Apply online at https://psu.jobs/job/59464
  • Has anyone applied to Penn State yet? The lack of a 'submit' button on the online service is disconcerting - or am I missing it?
  • I started my application, but didn't finish it and received an email acknowledging my application but noting the absence of some documents. So I think as long as things are saved on the website, they are "submitted"
  • Yes, I started the application and immediately got a confirmation email. Once I had submitted all the documents, I got an email from the search committee chair (~24 hours later) confirming that my application had been received. (10/14)
  • It's not clear from the ad, but the cover letter can contain your teaching/research statements, a separate statement is not needed.
  • Any news from those who applied for this position? Does anybody know how many applications they received?
  • Any news on this? (11/5)
  • Pretty sure it went to a long list around the end of October...
  • Does this mean that thay have already contacted a number of candidates?
  • I know someone who was contacted early for add'l info, but his impression was there will probably be others followed up with later. Whatever that means, but temporary consolation?
  • Well, I have no idea how long this kind of process can take. I guess it all depends on the number of applications they receive. Is there a moment when hopes are lost?
  • For this same search last year additional materials were requested about a month out from the application deadline, if that helps.
  • Does anyboby have been contacted? Complete silence from the institution and the online recruiting system tells that the job status is active.
  • Rejection email 12/4 - they culled out anyone that was not a PhD by 10/15/15
  • Well apparently also people who had a Ph.D. since 2008 as in my case. I have received nothing, but as we know.. no news bad news!
  • Same here. I haven't received any word, either good or bad.
  • The online status of the application is open and active.. but I guess this is just a formality until they fill the position
  • Ditto - haven't heard anything.
  • Four candidates have been invited for interviews in January. 240 applicants in total.
  • Original post above, read: "Four candidates have been invited for interviews in January. The remaining 236 applicants can continue searching."
  • Reversed an edit that removed the snootiness from a Penn State IP address (the comment directly above this). If that's the tone at Penn State regarding this search, let everyone see their true colors.
  • Agreed. That attitude does not does not bode well for the department culture.
  • That is the most disgusting, DISGUSTING thing I've seen in a long time. Whoever wrote that should be outed and shamed if a faculty member. I am going to find out if it is. Some wiki users are dumb, dumb, dumb.
  • Yeah, not cool.
  • Nice rejection email stating over 220 applicants (2/10) x3
  • I would assume that this means it has been offered and accepted
  • Second-hand info: This has been offered and accepted.

  • Review of applications will begin December 1.
  • Sorry. The post needed some cleaning since whoever posted it just pasted it in the Rollins post. If someone can make this editable (and fix the SDSU post too), it would be appreciated... ---> Done [10/14]
  • Also posted at Physical Anthropology 2015-2016
  • Does anyone have an understanding of whether they mean Old World Prehistory in the narrow sense (i.e. Paleolithic) or the broader more literal sense?
  • I expect that it refers to Palaeolithic and perhaps also Neolithic. Anything later generally isn't considered "prehistory" in the Old World because there is writing.
  • If anyone on the search committee is reading this: thank you for the simplest, most straight-forward electronic application I have encountered. Clean, easy: a model.
  • Anyone get word on this yet?
  • Nope
  • They are accepting applications until Jan 15, so I wouldn't expect much action before that date.
  • Huh. That's new. When did that change?
  • The Interfolio page says review of applications begins Dec. 1, but it is open until Jan. 15
  • Letters of recommendation requested (1/20)
  • Request for Skype interview (2/11)
  • Campus interviews being scheduled
  • Offer made and accepted

San Diego State University (CA) - TT Asst. Professor - Human-Environmental Dynamics Arch. - Deadline: 21 Sept. 2015 - OFFER ACCEPTED[]

The Department of Anthropology at San Diego State University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the level of assistant professor in the archaeology of human-environmental dynamics beginning in Fall 2016. The successful candidate will join and contribute to the interdisciplinary Area of Excellence Center for Climate and Sustainability Studies.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in anthropology or related field, a proven record of excellent publication, and potential for securing external funding. Specialty interests may include GIS, paleoethnobotany, archaeometry, geoarchaeology, or other skills that complement existing departmental strengths and articulate with issues of climate change. Regional focus is open. Excellent teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels is necessary, including general anthropology courses as well as specialized upper division courses. Ability to teach quantitative data analysis is desirable.

  • What happened to this job last year? If anybody connected to the search reads this wiki, please read this: DO NOT SEND OUT REQUESTS FOR LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION SO FREAKING EARLY! This was not done due to some crappy automated system like a lot of jobs; the search committee requested them (or requested that applicants request them). It seemed really symptomatic of a problematic search, and I was not surprised it was cancelled. But, whatever, it really wastes the time of everyone.
  • I was interviewed not long after letter requests went out. Campus visits occurred, offers were made. Search was cancelled for the next year.
  • So why was the search cancelled?
  • The search was cancelled because the person they offered the job accepted another offer somewhere else.
  • They didn't ask everyone for letters, just the people they were genuinely interested in. (I was asked for letters, but didn't get an interview.) It seemed like a perfectly normal search to me, but maybe I missed something. It just didn't work out with any of the four candidates they interviewed, and the search committee wasn't very happy about it, either.
  • My apologies. I totally got this one confused with another job where the search was cancelled. But, on another note, was this the case where the candidates did not accept the job? That seems to have happened a lot last year for many jobs either because the candidate took another job or, what seems more likely, people had jobs and stayed put after the offer was made. That must be very frustrating for those in need of jobs, when nobody gets hired at all since the candidate wasn't attracted from the job she/he already has. I believe the NYU job didn't hire some people last year due to this, and the U of A job was a complete debacle: U of A. SW job. And they hired nobody since all the candidates turned them down. U of A. SW job. That is some surreal crazy sh%t. U of A couldn't hire a SW person. Crazy, crazy, crazy. That place must be problematic, but maybe SW archaeology is in decline. At least NYU is hiring again. I think another job search was cancelled last year since the retiring person changed his mind. Nice. Anyway, the market doesn't look too good this year. Hell, even the wiki doesn't seem that active. But, it's still August, I suppose. Maybe things will improve. I plan on getting 5 campus interviews and 7 job offers this year, but I won't accept anything that does not come with an endowed chair and full tenure, and a ferrari (and I don't even have a driver's license).
  • (10/5) Has anyone else logged into Interfolio lately?  The dossier now posts as "incomplete." They added two additional categories since I submitted on 9/4, including "Research Statement" and "Three Letters of Recommendation."  I have received no message, and have no reason to believe this is a personalized request for additional materials.  Any thoughts?
  • I see the same thing on my Interfolio account. However, it says submitted so hopefully it's fine (X3, 10/5).
  • Just an observation, but if they're pulling this nonsense again and requesting letters so early in the process (my interfolio has the same as above) I'm just going to let this one go past. Not going to put my references through doing that again when it's clear they're just asking for this from *all* applicants.
  • A friend received an e-mail from Interfolio requesting letters of recommendation and a research statement. I'm guessing (note that this is only a guess - I have no insider insights into this search) that everyone who applied for this job, regardless of whether they are now being considered further, will now see the option to upload these materials in their Interfolio account and that their application is "incomplete", even if the search committee only wants materials from people who received e-mails to that effect.
  • Rejection email received 10/6 x 4
  • This rejection was sent very quickly!! Makes me think that this was a "search" in name only... No real data to back it up, but wonder if they already had someone in mind from last year's search?
  • Whether they did or not, kudos to them for telling people so quickly!
  • Any news on this position? Have campus interviews been scheduled? Thank you in advance for any info you can provide.
  • Campus interviews are in process. [posted 11/11]
  • Any word on this job? I was not on the short list, but I'm just interested considering what happened last year
  • Offer made & accepted in mid/late December, I think.

  • Review of applications will begin November 16, 2015, and will continue until the position is filled.
  • I realize that this is a wiki, which means that there is little if any central oversight, but someone made a big mistake with this job posting. Note, above the title states that the "Deadline" is November 16. The job ad states that review of applications will begin on November 16, which means that the deadline was, effectively, November 15. I am not sure if this error has hurt anyone's chances for this job--I am not applying, so no stakes in this conversation besides a "heads up."
  • Okay, now that I posted that, I noted that the deadline langauge for many of these job ads is a bit strange. Many of them state in the job ad title that the deadline is on a specific date, but then the ad states that the department will begin to review applications on that date. Why not just post the date for the application review? I know for certain that some search committees start the application review on the date listed, so if they list that they will review applications on November 16, for example, it means that the applications should be submitted beforehand, by November 15... right? In these cases, shouldn't the wiki list the day before as the deadline and not the day that the review will begin?
  • I've been on the market for several years and only this year did I notice this sort of language as well. As a result, I've started trying to submit at least a day before the deadline. But I wonder how many deadlines I've actually "missed" previously.
  • I realized my application was a day late for this reason too, unfortunately. Thanks to whoever recently updated the wiki to Nov 15, but alas, it was long after I had copied the information into my personal files.
  • E-mail confirmation of materials received and review underway (11/16)
  • Inside source told me: There are about 100 applications. Applications received on 11/16 are under consideration. Skype interviews will be held in early December.
  • Any news on Skype interviews? (12/4)
  • Letters of recommendation and skype interview requested (12/4)
  • Skype interviews underway. Seems like a very collegial department with broad interests. Good luck everyone!
  • Has anyone heard anything since skype interviews in December?? (01/27)
  • Campus interviews are happening from late January - February.
  • Any news? (3/3)
  • Offer made. Negotiations underway (3/4)
  • Offer has been accepted.

University of Leicester (UK) - Permanent Lecturer in Archaeology (equiv. to tenure track assistant prof in the US) - Deadline: 11 Aug. 2015 - OFFER ACCEPTED[]

http://www.jobs.ac.uk/job/ATW981/lecturer-in-archaeology/

In this position you will undertake teaching, research and administrative duties in Archaeology in line with the School's learning and teaching, and research strategies.

The position will require you to undertake undergraduate and postgraduate teaching (campus-based and distance-learning) in Archaeology in the School of Archaeology & Ancient History and contribute towards research and administration as detailed below. You will be required to take up the post on 1 October 2015 or as soon as possible thereafter.

This post will develop the School’s strong track record in more recent periods of archaeology. Specialisms of particular interest are heritage and historical archaeology (in a broad sense). Period/area specialisms within these fields could include Mesoamerica, Western Asia and archaeologies of the Islamic world, although others which complement existing staff interests and activities will be considered. Additional desirable skills include standing buildings (including digital methodologies in this area), fieldwork and other practical archaeological skills or some relevant aspect of environmental archaeology or archaeological science.

  • The closing date for this post is midnight on 11 August 2015.
  • Any news on this position?
  • I know several people in the department; those sources are unanimous in telling me that it's taking longer than normal (by UK standards) to finalise a shortlist as they were advertising for several positions simultaneously, including several fixed-term positions alongside this permanent one. They now have to shortlist for all of them. In addition, they've only just appointed a brand-new Acting Head of School.  So logistical and bureaucratic issues have led to a delay.
  • I know that the lectureship in ancient history has been filled. So I guess this lectureship also by now (11 Sept)?
  • As of today (14 Sept) it has not been filled to the best of my knowledge.
  • Does this mean that the shortlisting process is still ongoing?
  • To the best of my knowledge (16 Sept), yes - though this could change imminently.  British hiring processes differ from many North American processes.  They typically go straight to the final campus presentation & interview stage without any intermediate stage of Skype interviews or similar.  So they're trying to whittle this down to the final 5 or so candidates, but have had very strong interest in the position, and are also simultaneously hiring for fixed-term teaching fellowships.  The scale of the task has led to a delay.
  • This is a sort of some good news. I know people who applied for the job and they had lost hopes!
  • Campus interviews scheduled to take place the 24th of September for the five shortlisted candidates.
  • Given that most readers of this wiki are North Americans, it's also perhaps worth adding quickly that all of the shortlisted candidates are currently based at UK institutions.
  • Rejection received (following campus interview) - best of luck to whoever was successful, both department and other candidates were very friendly.
  • Paradoxically, given the advert phrasing, they hired a prehistorian and specialist in the pre-Columbian Caribbean; this was the only candidate whose research wasn't focused on the archaeology of a historical period (in a broad sense).

  • The priority deadline for application materials is December 15, 2015. This position will remain open until filled.
  • With this kind of listing, I wonder if you have a case of a very-well integrated department or a very fractured one that is bound to be contentious? Any knowledge of the place?
  • They were pushing for 2 positions and only got authorization for one. This was originally going to be an anthro position but the archaeologists were able to open it up for us as well.
  • Just saw that this is listed as one of the best places to live in the country....
  • Depends. Do you enjoy four or five months of snow without any mountains for skiing?
  • Depends. Are there good pubs?
  • Yes! The Twin Cities have an abundance of good (and diverse) food and drinking holes, cultural events, etc.
  • Anyone know if a bioarchaeologist would fit the position, or if they really want either cultural or archaeo?
  • Any news? Hoping to try one of those pubs.
  • Nothing yet. Probably too early given the Dec. 15 deadline and the holiday period.
  • Anyone heard anything on this one?
  • Request for additional materials (rec letters, syllabi, teaching statement, articles) (1/22) (X4)
  • Care to share what your subfields are? Curious to know if they went with archy or cultural - or something else...
  • I received the request and I'm arch, but also something else...
  • Also received request and am an archaeologist, no mysterious and intriguing "something else" :)
  • I'm also an archaeologist but I am currently doing ethnographic research and have taught Cultural Anthro so pitched myself as doing both
  • Any rumblings on this? (2/25)
  • Got email late last week that said one of my referees had not submitted the letter. So, they were still compiling info by last Friday (2/26)
  • Contacted to be on short list (3/4) (x2)
  • Whatever happened to this job? Never got shortlisted but also never got a reject
  • OFFER MADE AND ACCEPTED (4/29)

Preference will be given to candidates with methodological expertise (e.g., bioarchaeology, zooarchaeology, lithic analysis, etc.) that complements existing faculty specialties. Candidates with research experience in North America (excluding Mexico) are especially encouraged to apply, but all applications will be considered from candidates whose geographic focus complements, rather than duplicates, current faculty regional interests. • The position is open until filled, however the review of applications will begin on November 2, 2015.
  • "Excluding Mexico"? That seems rather arbitrary. Why would a Mayanist who studies in Guatemala or Belize be more welcome than one who works a few kilometers away in Mexico? They have an Andeanist but nobody else working in Latin America. How about "No left-handed people need apply"?
  • I would imagine that it's because undergrads can't participate in excavations in Mexico? Or when they talk about North America, they don't mean to include C. America and thus aren't looking for a Mayanist per se.
  • Mexico is part of North America (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexico) so I took the exclusion to mean they will give preference to scholars who study the prehistory of the US or Canada. The exclusion is a technicality.
  • I don't believe undergraduates can participate fully in Guatemala, either. North America can be interpreted to mean everything north of Panama, but I imagine they mean the cultures that would fall under a "North American Prehistory" course. Indeed, good luck to the applicants.
  • Heard they started doing Skype interviews. Anyone else got any info? [posted 11/20]
  • Haven't heard anything. 11/21
  • Can anyone verify that this has reached the Skype interview stage? (11/24)
  • Yes, they conducted Skype interviews the week of Nov. 16th [posted 11/24] x2
  • Campus interviews in progress [week of 12/14]
  • 12/23 got rejection email saying they had selected the Best Fit candidate (x2)

Washington University in St. Louis (MO) - TT Asst. Professor - Anthropological Archaeologist, Americas (excl. Maya) - Deadline: 23 Oct. 2015 - OFFER ACCEPTED[]

We seek an anthropological archaeologist working in any part of the Americas except the Maya region to teach undergraduate and graduate courses, to advise students, to conduct research, to perform other scholarly activities including publishing in scholarly journals, and to participate in departmental governance and university service. Ph.D. in Anthropology or Archaeology is required. Candidates must have demonstrated excellence in original theoretical and methodological research that complements the existing strengths of the department. Active fieldwork or lab research is required. The candidate is expected to work with graduate students in developing research projects and must have a demonstrable commitment to innovative undergraduate and graduate instruction, ideally including experience teaching introduction to archaeology.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in hand by time of appointment. • Priority will be given to applications received on or before Friday, October 23, 2015, but the search will continue until the position is filled.
  • "(excl. Maya)" ha ha ha. Funny how an entire generation of professors have zero intention of retiring.
  • We all know that after the recession, a ton of end-of-career professors hung on for a few extra years to rebuild their retirement savings, and we continue to wait for these positions (if they are replaced at all). In this case, however, Mayanists are not excluded because of the retirement schedule of current faculty. It is more complicated. This is a great department. Good luck to all applicants. Mayanists may find succor in the relatively high number of Latin American positions available this year.
  • New email for applications (last name changed).: All materials should be sent as MSWord files or PDFs via e-mail with “Archaeology Search” in the subject line to: Lauren Horton <lahorton@wustl.edu>.

  • Oh, horrible, oh, horrible, most horrible! If thou hast nature in thee, bear it not. Let not the royal bed of Denmark be a couch for luxury and damnèd incest. But howsoever thou pursuest this act, taint not thy mind, nor let thy soul contrive against thy mother aught. Leave her to heaven and to those thorns that in her bosom lodge to prick and sting her. Fare thee well at once. The glowworm shows the matin to be near, and 'gins to pale his uneffectual fire. Adieu, adieu, adieu. Remember me. (x3)
  • Position filled (3/3)

DISCUSSION, RUMORS, SPECULATION[]

REALIZE THAT A LOT OF DISHEARTENED PEOPLE STOP REFERRING TO THIS PAGE ONCE IT IS CLEAR THAT THINGS AREN'T MOVING FORWARD. BUT THERE ARE TOO MANY POSTS above IN NEED OF CLOSURE. EVEN IF PEOPLE ONLY HAVE THIRD-PARTY INFO ON THE STATUS OF MANY OF THESE, PLEASE UPDATE US.

Hope things thicken out. Looking pretty grim this year, like two years ago.

  • Speaking of two years ago, the Vitae Job Tracker website has posted the results of the 2013-2014 job season. Only 102 jobs in all of Anthropology that year. http://jobtracker.chroniclevitae.com/disciplines/anthropology/
  • That website missed a great number of the archaeology candidates who got jobs that cycle -- I wouldn't count on it as accurate in the slightest. Hopefully that gives you at least a tiny bit more hope...

Special Request: Help with job market research[]

This article highlights some interesting trends in the music theory job market, and it’s only possible because of the way academic musicians use this wiki (see also CreativeWriting_2016): when they accept a job offer, they post their name, where and when they earned their PhD, and what job they’re moving from. I’d like to do something similar for anthropology, but it depends on you. If you’d like to help us understand who gets which jobs and how quickly, please consider posting your name and info when you accept an offer. Thanks! DanielG_AAA (talk) 17:47, March 21, 2016 (UTC)

A Running List of Schools Requesting Reference Letters Upfront (Contrary to AAA Career Center Request)[]

The AAA has requested that search committees refrain from asking for letters of recommendation until initial screening of applicants has been completed:

"Solicitation of letters of recommendation should occur only after an initial screening of candidates to minimize inconvenience to applicants and referees. Names of references may be requested, however."

http://www.aaanet.org/profdev/index.cfm

Despite this (at least four year-old request), many institutions persist in requiring letters of recommendation as part of an initial application package.  This places a burden on both the applicant and his/her reviewers and places undue stress on advisor/advisee relationships.  Please list here the names of schools/job posts asking for up-front letters of recommendation so that we may alert the AAA to violations of their request:

  • Cal State San Marcos
  • Colgate
  • Colorado College
  • James Madison University
  • Kenyon College
  • University of Central Arkansas
  • University of Montreal

Possible "quick-reference" spreadsheet addition to this Wiki?[]

Could someone with the necessary skills to successfully manipulate complex Wiki entries please create a quick reference spreadsheet for all jobs on this wiki--perhaps appearing just below and similar in format to the "Current Users" section? And perhaps with these simple column headers?

INSTITUTION     JOB_TITLE    DEADLINE     PREFERRED_FOCI     STATUS   (and any other headings deemed appropriate...)

This would be a much more convenient way for everyone to quickly check in on employment opportunities (and presumably more useful than stats on current users of the wiki)...would happily do it myself but I have no idea how to make it work...

  • Thanks for this suggestion. In my long experience with this wiki as an admin, I can say this kind of jobs table has been tried on various pages over the years, but it has proven difficult for users to edit and maintain. Fields that manage to set this up usually abandon it. A table to keep track of Users (like above) is easier to keep up, but when the full season is in swing and lots of jobs and updates are coming in, a table that involves more complex code and editing skills tends to fall apart, generate lots of complaints and waste a lot of time. If somebody can come along with a fabulous hack to make tables work better on this wiki, great; I have yet to see it happen and it's beyond my skill set .... In the meantime, the best way to follow updates to this page (new positions added, interview info. etc.) is by subscribing to the RSS feed for this page: http://academicjobs.wikia.com/wiki/Archaeology_Jobs_2015-2016?feed=rss&action=history A rudimentary RSS reader is embedded at the top of the page; more sophisticated RSS readers are recommended here: http://www.slant.co/topics/446/~what-are-the-best-news-readers - Hope this helps! --Una74 (talk) 17:15, July 26, 2015 (UTC)
